Since then she’s become a Future Professional Educator and an Advance Skills Educator with the company. “I love color and feel so incredibly blessed that I’ve found a career that resonates with me,” says Jessica, who is a member of Cosmetologists Chicago. Being open to change is key for this gifted colorist, who is convinced that if you close yourself off you stop growing and your art dies. Grateful for the mentors in her life, Jessica believes that becoming an educator herself is a way to pay it forward. “The meaning of life is to fnd your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away,” she says, paraphrasing Pablo Picasso. alan randalld ➻ { ALOXXI} was a fresh Aveda Institute grad when he landed a job as a stylist at The Salon in Ames, Iowa, and began working for a tool company. Three years later he started using Aloxxi products, and his hair artistry truly kicked in. So much so, in fact, that for the past two years, Alan has been creating stunning looks with the Aloxxi team at hair shows across the United States. Perhaps when you’ve spent your life sporting a thick crop of russethued hair, you understand how hair color turns heads. We can’t wait to see what his future holds. ➻ renee valerie wilson l{ TIGI } was nominated by TIGI’s Richy Kandasamy. U.S. Technical Creative Director at TIGI, so we knew she had to have some serious hair color chops. Based in New York City, Renee is a TIGI Talent Colour Educator, which means she travels all over the country doing shows and platform work for the company. Since starting her career in Sydney, Australia, Renee has had her work published in magazines like Oyster, Culture and Hairdresser’s Journal. Now she can add Te Colorist to her résumé. ➻ sara embry l { AVEDA} is fortunate enough to work at Jackson Ruiz Salon in Austin, Texas, where her boss is none other than NAHA winner and Aveda Global Artistic Director, Hair Styling, Allen Ruiz. While working at the salon, Sara was a member of the winning NAHA team of 2011, and has worked onstage at Aveda’s Tuff Love Miami and Aveda Congress 2013. “Creating art with hair color is my passion,” she says. “I love helping people feel confdent and beautiful with fresh new color.” ➻ alessandra marie minardi, h { WELLA PROFESSIONALS, BETH MINARDI SIGNATURE SHADES AND REDKEN} has a pedigree most colorists would kill for—her Aunt Beth is none other than legendary colorist Beth Minardi. “Growing up, we always talked about fashion, art, books and hair color,” says Allesandra, who is also inspired by her father, Salvatore Minardi, who owns an eponymous salon in Madison, New Jersey, where she works. “He taught me to stay humble because hair color is always evolving.” Her passion for hair color may come naturally, but Alessandra understands that there is always something else to learn. “I am intrigued by color formulations and new methods of application,” she says. “When I color, I don’t go against the hair, I go with it. I let it speak to me.” Sounds like she’s onto something. ciara ciprianos { KERATIN COMPLEX} ➻ is lucky enough to be Deb Gavin’s amy niles, l ➻ { WELLA PROFESSIONALS, KERATIN COMPLEX} OF BER TS MEM TOLOGIS E O COSMCHICAG knew she’d be a colorist at Mario Tricoci in Chicago before she ever started beauty school. “Painting and artistry is something that’s been in my family for generations,” says Amy, who believes that education is the key to success. To that end, she now educates future colorists at Mario Tricoci in a weekly class setting and has been certified to educate for Wella Professionals and Keratin Complex. ➻ k{ protégé at Fresh Hair Studio in Southampton, Pennsylvania. “She taught me some of my toughest lessons and has helped me work toward my greatest successes,” she says. Gavin’s best advice? “Once you touch it, you own it,” says Ciara, who plans to combine her college degree and the knowledge she’s gained working behind the chair to elevate the experience of hair color nationwide. } vanessa orozco ARTEASECOLORS has assisted Gerd Hoher, president of Arteasecolors, on a number of occasions, and his faith in her has not been misplaced. “I’ve learned more than I could have imagined from Gerd,” says Vanessa, who works at Hidden Hairpin in San Pedro, California. The payoff for being a colorist? “To see how even a small change can make your clients so happy,” she says. madison loren d ➻{ WELLA PROFESSIONALS} was nominated by Ginger Boyle, who knows a thing or two about fnding and developing raw talent. “I hire handfuls, and Madison was a handful at frst,” says Boyle, who hired Madison right out of Paul Mitchell The School. “She’s defnitely been a challenge, but she’s a natural, who has an exciting career ahead of her.” Case in point: Recently Lisa ShriverBrooks, who owns DIVA Studio in Las Vegas, visited Planet Salon and couldn’t take her eyes off Madison. Says Boyle, “She has a lot of ability.” 38 The Colorist | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014 | thecoloristmag.com PAULELL H MITC CHOOL S THE GRAD ➻ molly tremente k ➻ jessica lewis, ; { MATRIX } is the owner of Symmetry Hair Designs in Belleview, Florida, and names Matrix Artistic Director Chrystofer Benson as one of her mentors. “His color is like nothing you’ve ever seen before,” she says. As an educator she loves watching her students experience “aha” moments. “We have the greatest career in the world,” says Jessica, who was inspired by something she read by motivational speaker Michael Cole. “He said that nothing affects a human being’s mental health more than their selfimage, and nothing affects a human being’s self-image more than their hair.” I think we can all agree with that. scwind ➻ rhiannon { OYA} came to Blaze d Salon in Coralville, Iowa, straight out of beauty school. Right away, her unrelenting work ethic opened doors for her, and she began attending workshops with industry greats like Geno Stampora and Candy Shaw Codner. Having attained master status, Rhiannon has raised the bar for all who work for her, providing the support they need to achieve their own goals. Tree days a week she conducts training sessions in cut and color, spending afternoons and weekends doing what she loves best: working behind the chair at the salon where she follows her passion for hair color. { GOLDWELL} is a colorist at Plush Hair Studio in Glenville, New York, where she is a Goldwell Color Specialist and Ambassador. “I love the artistic freedom during the coloring process that allows you to customize formulas and application techniques to your canvas,” she says. “The possibilities are endless.” Molly has been lucky enough to work with Goldwell’s John Simpson, Rebecca Hiele, Nick Pagano and Dimitrios Tsioumas. “They’ve been such an inspiration to me,” she says. ➻ amber skrzypek k { KEUNE HAIRCOSMETICS} is a National Studio Artist for Keune Haircosmetics, having joined the company as one of their regional artists in 2007. In 2012 she became part of Keune’s National Color Team and began traveling the country teaching color at distributor events and The Keune Experience and The Keune Evolution. Then in 2013 she traveled to company headquarters in the Netherlands, where she was named a Keune International 2-Star Educator. Remember her name. You’ll be hearing it a lot from now on. becka bradshaw j ➻ { REDKEN} is a colorist at Shear Art Salon South in Tampa, Florida, where she enjoys mixing the old or unusual with the new and modern. Recently she assisted Geneva Cowen, Sam Villa’s Artistic Director, at a photo shoot. “As both a colorist and a designer, I have come to realize how every piece has to be fnely tuned to ft a bigger concept,” she says. “Training your eye to see what the camera sees is invaluable.” ➻ elle duerr l { MATRIX} works at Archer Salon in San Francisco, California, where her title is Chemistry Director. “I am a true, tothe-core Logics pure tone colorist,” says Elle, who feels she’s working in light reflection rather than color. A Matrix CRAFT Certified Color Master, she has learned a lot from Matrix artists like Dan Csicsai and Chrystofer Benson, who have had a huge influence on the way she works. 40 The Colorist | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014 | thecoloristmag.com mary sutcliffe l ➻ { BROCATO HAIR COLOR, FRAMESI AND PRAVANA} is grateful to be working for industry legend Sam Brocato at his namesake salon in New York City, where she received a People’s Choice Award. As an apprentice at the former Oscar Bond Salon in Manhattan, Mary apprenticed with head colorist Wendy Bond. “She had this deep understanding of color and a power to teach it in a way that blew my mind,” she says. joey hooten l { AVEDA} works at Van Michael Salon in Atlanta, ➻ Georgia. Let’s just say it doesn’t get much better than that. “Like fashion, trends in hair color are constantly being reinvented, and that keeps me inspired and excited for what’s next,” says Joey, who was on the winning team for this year’s NAHA Salon Team of the Year and credits Natalie Gurley at Van Michael Salon with helping her fnd inspiration in less obvious places. ➻ trixie dickinson k { CHROMASTICS HAIR COLOR} is the Vice President of Education at Moxie Hair Salon in Minneapolis, where owner Stephen Adams hired her specifcally to educate other hairdressers. As an up-and-coming educator with Chromastics Hair Color, she has had the privilege of working with color guru Tom Dispenza, and was named a Chromastics Rising Star at the company’s Shades of Excellence event in Orlando, Florida, this year. shawnee ➻ heltsley j { FAROUK SYSTEMS} works at Te Mixing Bowl in Charleston, South Carolina. Hair color, she says, is one of the first ways we physically describe ourselves. “It’s part of our identity.” Quick to identify the legendary Farouk Shami as a mentor— “He’s a brilliant man who has been very inspiring to me,” she says—Shawnee was asked recently to join the Creative Artist Team for Farouk Systems. “Now I have a whole other world to explore and conquer.” falkowski d ➻{franklin AVEDA} is a talented hair colorist at Gary Manuel Studios in Seattle, Washington. “Color in general has always fascinated me,” says Franklin, who won an Editorial Choice Award in 2012 when he competed in a photo shoot competition at the salon. His mentor? Aveda Global Master Ana Karsis. “She has been very inspiring to me, not just for her amazing attitude but for her take-a-risk attitude that has helped me so much in my career,” he says. Her go-to hair color gurus are Redken’s Kris Sorbie and Tracey Cunningham, who have taught her to set lofty goals for herself. Right now she’s spreading the word about a book she wrote for beauty school grads called A Cosmo’s Guide to the Industry. You go, girl. alyssa shatek g { OYA} ➻ works her hair color magic at Blaze Color Salon in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “Nothing excites me more than when I can make a woman feel beautiful or even sexy. The transformative power of hair color continues to amaze me,” says Alyssa, who cites Belinda Gambuzza as a role model. “She makes even the most complicated techniques look simple.” ➻marleny macedo h { ALOXXI} discovered her passion for hair color while still in beauty school. A colorist at Fringe Salon in Houston, Marleny enjoys being part of the Aloxxi team because of the education they offer. “It’s fun, and I’m constantly learning something new.” rosa cisneroz➻ ngauamo l { REDKEN} is a Redken Certifed Hair Colorist and co-owner of Hair Illusions Salon in Tracy, California. The frst person to teach her about hair color was her mother, Cynthia Cisneroz. “Without having her as a mentor and a parent, there is no way I would be where I am today,” Rosa says. So what drives her passion for color? “Making someone feel amazing by changing their hair color, be it a subtle change or a complete transformation.” Now that’s something all colorists have in common. ➻alice warner o { ORGANIC COLOR SYSTEMS } works at Salon deZEN in Alexandria, Virginia, where she takes pride in knowing that she has made each client look and feel beautiful. “I love organic color because I know I can improve someone’s confdence one brush stroke at a time without jeopardizing their health or my own,” says Alice, who has been infuenced by color mavens Beth Minardi, Aveda’s Ian Michael Black and Rebecca Gregory of Organic Color Systems. In her future? “I defnitely see myself doing platform and editorial work,” she says. ➻ l kristin golembiewski { BROCATO HAIR COLOR, PRAVANA} has had the good fortune of working with a lot of really talented hairdressers, including Nick Arrojo (she worked for his cosmetology school in New York City). Now that she’s working at his eponymous salon in New York City, she can add Sam Brocato to the list. 42 The Colorist | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2014 | thecoloristmag.com olivia smalley g ➻ { FAROUK SYSTEMS} kate walsh l { ALL NUTRIENT} works at Merlin’s Ultimate Images in Manchester, New Hampshire, where she became so obsessed with All-Nutrient that she decided to enter a nationwide contest the company sponsored last year. “People who saw my model’s picture on Facebook thought she looked younger and had a lot more confdence,” says Kate, who plans to spend some time in New York City exploring freelancing opportunities before moving to Los Angeles next year. specializes in creating confdence for clients at Amanda Lynn & Co. in Cooper City, Florida. “Color can make a 60year-old woman look 45,” says Olivia, whose work has been featured in magazines like The Knot, Maxim and Oxygen Women’s Fitness. She’s also the founder of OMG! Artistry, whose clients have included opening acts for the Black Eyed Peas and Taylor Swift. vuotto ➻{danielle MATRIX} works l at Fashionista’s Salon in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. “Logics was, and still is, the color line I am most passionate about,” says Danielle, who is proudest of passing the Matrix Color Mastery program with fying colors. ➻Nisha Patel l { KERATIN COMPLEX} trained in London with the Vidal Sassoon Academy and continues to expand her skills in theatre and opera houses working backstage with wigs and makeup. Between gigs, Nisha freelances, doing editorials, commercials and flm work. Her newest mentor is Deb Gavin, International Artistic Director, Keratin Complex Color Therapy. “She made me believe that anything is possible,” Nisha says. “All of my mentors have taught me that the passion has to be there or you’ll stop caring about what you’re doing.” KS WOR THE WITH MENTO A SACROPERA
