Edmund Bartell penned the first guide to Cromer in 1800 and this the 2 nd edition was published in 1806, much expanded and with fine aquatint plates and a hand coloured map. The only other book he wrote was ‘Hints for Ornamental Cottages’ in 1804. Copies of ‘Cromer’ are scarce with the 1st 1800 edition almost unobtainable. £245 4. Berlyn, Mrs Alfred. Respined (all Emersons books used a very poor quality leather for the spines which generally has disintegrated.) Limited to 500 copies (with perhaps only 300 produced) this is no. 7 with 30 very fine tissue guarded photo-etchings (photogravures) of around Breydon and the Port in Great Yarmouth. Illustrated books by Emerson are rare and sought after, especially by ‘photographic breakers’. A poor copy of Life and Landscape recently fetched over £70,000 at auction. £2250 14. Fitch, Robert. Copy 52 of a limited edition of 350. Rubbed cloth and marbled boards commensurate with the next item. Foxing to the edges (TEG) otherwise sound with 50 full page illustrations by Percy Stimpson. Tipped in near the rear is a 4 page ink initialled sheet (1 blank) with a poem ‘To the River Yare.’ from Norwich Angling Club ‘With the Secretary’s best wishes for the New Year. 1st January 1891’. £57.50 19. Ex libris bookplate to the front pastedown. Foxing to endpapers and some of the earlier and latter pages. Soundly bound with TEG. Plates (most tissue guarded) by Pococke. £45 20. Ladbrooke, Robert. Views of the Churches in Norfolk, illustrative of Blomefields History of that County, from original drawings, In Three Volumes, Oblong Large 8vo J. B Ladbrooke, 1823. HB. 552 lithographs by Ladbrooke bound into 3 fine volumes in black half morocco with black buckram boards. Raised bands and gilt title to the spines. Volume I: A-F, Volume II: G-R, Volume III: S-Y. The first volume includes an original title page from 1823. Ladbrooke produced around 670 churches in total during the 1820s and 1830s. Sold with Ron Fiske’s monograph published for the Ladbrooke exhibition at the City Bookshop in 2012. £3500 A little staining to the boards and with sunning to the spine. Minor foxing internally not affecting the plates, one of which is loose. 25. Norwich Art Circle. Along with the catalogues of the 2nd to 26th exhibition and the catalogues of the 28th to 35th exhibition. 4to Norwich Art Circle, 1885-1900. PB. A very rare near run of these parts as issued. All in good to very good condition but for the front cover loose to part one and a tear to the rear cover of part two. £325 26. Norwich Art Circle. Catalogue of the Exhibition held at The Society’s Room, Old Bank of England Chambers. Queen Street: The First exhibition to the fourteenth exhibition all bound together in one volume, 4to Norwich Art Circle, 1885-1890. HB. With all lithographs and front covers bound in as published and in very good condition. In worn half morocco which has splits and loss to the bottom of the spine (1 inch). £195 27. The first six issues bound together in green half morocco with raised bands and title in gilt to the spine. Slightly rubbed. Postage stamps and royal photo stuck to the front marbled endpapers with the rear free endpaper having been removed. Contents in very good clean condition and includes numerous colour art plates by noted local artists. £50 21. [Leach and Son]. Pictures of East Coast Health Resorts, 4to 172,xxxv,[3]pp Jarrold & Sons, [1901]. HB. A single volume containing the photographic plates for the 3 part work ‘The Fen and Marshland Churches’. With 47 tissue guarded sepia photos. Red half morocco with a little rubbing and corner knocks. Marbled endpapers and AEG. Epsom College Library stamps to all three page edges and small class mark to the spine. Ex libris bookplate of Bernard Wallis to the front pastedown and that of Edmund Seymour Daubeney to a blank free. A little light foxing and soiling but with the photographs in clean condition which stand alone without text as a record of 19th Century East Anglian Churches. £150 Slight rubbing, fading and soiling to the original red cloth with title in gilt on decorated front board. Fine inside. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham whose early work (generally for Jarrold) encompassed East Anglian guide books. He later became famous for his ‘fantasy’ illustrations particularly for children’s illustrated books. £75 22. Lindley, Percy [Editor].
