Norwich sport and
physical activity
directory 2016-17
Welcome
Welcome to the 2016 – 2017 edition of the Norwich Sport and Physical
Activity Directory. This publication has been produced by the sports
development team at Norwich City Council. There are a wide range of
activities listed in this guide to suit every taste and ability.
For more information about sports clubs or facilities in Norwich, or if
you run a club and need support and advice, please contact the sports
development team.
How the directory works
Each club is organised by sport alphabetically, under each club you will
find useful information such as website address and key contact
information. The Norwich Sports Directory is a one stop shop for
information about joining a club, starting a new sport or even to find
out where you can volunteer.
It’s by no means a definitive list of sports clubs in the Norwich area and
there are a number of clubs in Norwich who have either not responded
or did not want their details in the directory.
Disclaimer – We have made every effort to ensure that the information in this directory is
accurate. However, Norwich City Council cannot accept responsibility for any error or
omission which may have occurred.

Recognition, volunteering and coaching
Recognition, volunteering
and coaching
Local clubs vary immensely in the
quality of sporting provision that
they provide. When considering
which club to join you need to
choose one that’s fun, enjoyable
and suits your needs.
You should enquire whether the club
has accreditation. A club that has
been awarded Clubmark status will
have demonstrated high standards
of coaching, child protection, equal
opportunities and club management
and will be committed to
maintaining these standards.
Some clubs have adopted their own
club mark standards such as Go Ride
Club, FA Charter standard club, Golf
Mark and Swim 21, these are also
recognised by Sport England.
4
Clubmark for clubs
If you are an existing club that
needs assistance, we can help
with the Clubmark accreditation
process, identifying funding streams
and assisting with funding bids.
We can also offer advice on club
start up and assist in finding the
correct venue for your club.
How will Clubmark
benefit your club?
Clubmark is a highly valued
accreditation which will bring
many advantages for your club:
• credibility with local authorities,
schools and other community
agencies
• more confidence for parents when
selecting a club for their children
•m
any funding bodies state that
applicants must be Clubmark
accredited or working towards
accreditation.
Coach education
Recognition, volunteering and coaching
Specific coaching courses are
organised for existing sports coaches
and for people who wish to begin
coaching. Applicants can develop
their coaching skills via nationally
recognised qualifications/courses,
to provide a pathway for participants
into coaching employment. For
more information please refer
to your national governing body
or www.activenorfolk.org.

Allotments
Join our growing
community
Allotments are not just about
growing produce. As well as
the satisfaction of growing your
own healthy fruit and vegetables,
working on your allotment is also
a great way of keeping fit.
Norwich has more than 1900
allotment plots on 18 sites, with
many plot holders being allocated
a plot within three months of
joining the waiting list. Each plot
covers 125 square metres and costs
£37 pounds a year – that’s just over
65p a week.
If you would like to join our
allotment community you can find
the application form by visiting
www.norwich.gov.uk/
allotments.
ALLOTMENTS
You can burn around 150 calories
from 30 minutes of gentle
gardening, and all while enjoying
the fresh air and improving your
well-being. Allotments are also
great places to meet people and,
for many plot holders, the allotment
becomes a great place to socialise.

Cycling in Norwich
Whether you are cycling to work,
school or just for fun, the humble
bicycle is an easy way to get around
and get more active.
CYCLING IN NORWICH
Regular cycling can reduce the risk
of chronic illnesses such as heart
disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke.
It can also boost your mood and
help keep your weight under control.
The easiest way to make sure you
cycle regularly is to use your bike
as a means of everyday transport.
Commuting by bike is cheap, green
and one of the easiest ways to fit
exercise into your routine.
There are many wonderful
places to cycle in Norwich and its
surrounding countryside. Information
on cycle routes can be found at
www.norwich.gov.uk/pedalways
and a map can be downloaded
from www.norwich.gov.uk/

You can also plan journeys online
using CycleStreets or follow the
national cycle network on Sustrans
website www.sustrans.org.uk.
If you’d like some company on
your bike ride, whether it’s to work
or just for fun, find a cycling pal
using BikeBUDi. Find out more

Walking
WALKING
Walking is a gentle, low-impact
form of exercise that’s easy, free and
suitable for people of all ages and
most abilities. A brisk walk is one of
the best natural energizers around.
It boosts circulation and increases
oxygen supply to each and every
cell in your body, helping you to feel
more alert and alive. It wakes up stiff
joints and eases muscle tension so
you feel less sluggish. Studies have
shown regular, moderate-intensity
exercise, such as brisk walking, to be
effective as antidepressants in cases
of mild and moderate depression.
Stepping into action!
We’ve been working closely with
colleagues from Active Norfolk,
Public Health England and NHS
Norwich Clinical Commissioning
Group to identify suitable partners
to achieve the desired outcomes.
This will also help us achieve our
Healthy Norwich ambitions.
National walking charity Living
Streets will oversee the project
and make sure Norwich benefits
from its expertise, in addition
to attracting national initiatives
to the city.
Norwich is already a great walking
city. Every extra step we take is
improving the health and quality of
life in the places we live and work.
Exploring which journeys we could
use to increase the amount we walk
could save us all money on fuel and
bus fares, while also making our
neighbourhoods nicer, healthier
and less congested places to live.
20
Since March 2014 the Walk
Norwich project has engaged
with over 4000 people. Our sports
development team hopes the project
will continue to encourage people
in our schools, workplaces and
communities to take part in positive
walking initiatives.

Running
Running is so accessible. Almost
anyone can put on a pair of trainers
and become a regular runner,
although you might need to start
with walking, and build up your
speed and distance gradually.
Many runners view their regular
runs as time to escape from a hectic
lifestyle. The fresh air, rhythmic pace
and regular breathing are relaxing,
and running alone or with friends can
give you the feeling of freedom and
leaving your troubles behind you.
Why not start running by
committing yourself to a 0 – 5k plan
or popping down to your local park
run? www.nhs.uk/change4life/
pages/couch-to-5k.aspx.

• helping maintain a healthy weight.

21
Norwich parkrun needs you!

We make it very easy for anyone
to take park as a helper. If you
would like to volunteer contact

TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING A SPORTS CLUB
Top tips for choosing
a sports club
Norwich City Council does not
endorse any of the organisations
published in this directory
and strongly advises that
you follow the tips below
to help choose a club.
•Always speak to the club
contact before turning up to
a session to confirm time and
venue details and if they are
accepting new members.
•Ask about cost of membership,
weekly fees and methods of
payment.
•Find out if the level of play is
suitable for you eg beginners,
recreational or competitive
and if you need to bring your
own equipment.
•Check that all coaches have the
relevant qualifications through
the National Governing Body
(NGB) for that sport.
•If activities include children,
check that coaches are
Disclosure and Barring Service
(DBS) checked and have
attended Safeguarding Children
Awareness training. You may
also want to observe a session
to assess the suitability.
•Also check there is a trained first
aider present at all sessions who
has access to a suitable first aid kit.
•Look for the Clubmark symbol in this directory. The symbol shows that the club has reached nationally
recognised operating standards.

NORDIC WALKING
Nordic Walking uses specially designed
poles to enhance your natural walking
experience. With a technique that is
similar to the upper body action of
classic cross country skiing. The result
is a full body workout, which means
that you burn up to 46 per cent
more calories compared to walking
without poles. It releases tension in
the neck and shoulders, improves
your posture and gait, strengthens
your back and abdominal muscles

TENNIS
Tennis for blind and visually impaired
players and originated in Japan in
the 1980s before the first national
tournament took place in 1990. This
sport uses the ‘soundball’, a table tennis
ball with ball bearings inside for weight
and noise; encased inside a foam casing
which will not hurt a player should it hit
them. Additionally, mini tennis rackets
and a mini net are used. This adapted
version of the game, using an audible
ball, is fun to play and really inclusive.
