The Washington - Seattle Studebaker Driver`s Club
The Washington June 2016 Greater Seattle Chapter SDC Founded in 1969 Volume 46 Number 6 The President’s STEERING COLUMN Don and Joan Andersen came through and volunteered to host our June meeting. They were supposed to host a meeting earlier this year that got canceled due to many members attending a memorial service for chapter member Don Greenlund. The previously scheduled garage tour will now consist of viewing Don Andersen’s latest projects, as the other proposed stops were not available due to scheduling conflicts or other issues. The Andersen’s address is 11406 S.E. 223rd Street, Kent, the date is June 12th and the time is 1 pm. And for those who attended the Northwest Overdrive on Vancouver Island, I look forward to hearing all about this year’s meet. In July, our chapter will host the annual All Studebaker Picnic at Mud Mountain Dam State Park in Enumclaw on Sunday, the 10th. In the past the picnic was scheduled on a Saturday, but this year it was moved to a Sunday to attract more people and more Studebakers. So get the word out to all your Studebaker, Packard, Pierce-Arrow and Avanti friends and bring your potluck dish to share and your Studebaker or related car for others to view starting at High Noon on Sunday, July 10th. As in previous years, we will be parking on the grass next to the Chinook shelter. The May issue of Turning Wheels contains Greta Justad’s tribute to our late newsletter editor, Bill Schiffer. Great Job, Greta! Well written. It also contained a surprise for me, as it featured a photo of Bob Bryant’s Avanti on the back inside cover. It wasn’t me, as that Bob Bryant lives in Connecticut. However the 1963 Avanti was the same color as the red 1963 Avanti I owned many years ago and sold to Michael Myer, son of Jon Myer, after I bought my 1989. I don’t think that it is the same car, but it might be. The Memorial Day weekend marked the unofficial start of summer. So check your oil and water and get your Studebaker on the road and enjoy all the cars events you can. There are plenty of activities out there to take advantage of such as cruise ins at America’s Car Museum , at Colby in Everett, Greenwood in north Seattle, or at a shopping mall or drivein near you or various car shows throughout the Seattle-TacomaEverett area. Just enjoy summer and drive your Studebaker. Tech Tip from the past By Bob Bryant This technical tip is taken from the October 1956 issue of Car Life magazine. “SOUND DIAGNOSIS: “Play it by ear,” say Studebaker engineers, if you hear strange noises from the transmission of your ’56 Stude. These noises often tell you what’s wrong; all you need to know is which sound to connect up with which trouble. With the gearshift in neutral and engine idling, difficulty with the bearing will show up as a distinct hissing noise. In severe cases, a bump or thud can be heard. Rough, worn, chipped, or scuffed gears will give themselves away by an intermittent growling or bass hum. If the transmission and engine assembly are out of alignment, a grinding noise will tell you this condition exists. So before you tell a mechanic to “take it apart and see what’s what,” listen to the car carefully. You may save some of your money and the mechanic’s time if you can describe the symptoms and apparent cause of the trouble.” Note: Although this tech tip doesn’t say, it probably refers to a manual transmission. I would not put the transmission in neutral (whether it was manual or automatic) unless the wheels were blocked so the car would not move.
