EDITOR’S NOTE
Hometeam
Big games bigger this year
A few years ago, the MIAA opened its tournaments to every team, resulting in winless
ones playing postseason games. This year’s football playoff format — eight teams in three
divisions qualifying — doesn’t go quite that far, but it does little to reward the best teams.
What it does, however, is add importance to some Thanksgiving games. As if they
weren’t big enough, right? This year, many holiday rivalries will determine bragging
rights and what teams advance to Tuesday’s playoffs.
Take the St. John’s vs. St. Peter-Marian game, for example. In
past seasons, the Guardians would be playing for pride tomorrow,
despite their 7-3 record. This year, though, they can qualify for the
Division 1 playoffs with a win over the mighty Pioneers.
If SPM doesn’t pull off the upset, it would likely open the door
for the winner of the Shrewsbury-Milford game to get the final
spot. And speaking of spots — determined by power rankings that
few understand — the winner of tomorrow’s best game, No. 1
Wachusett vs. No. 4 Holy Name, will surely improve its playoff
position.
The problem is, even if the Naps beat the Mountaineers, they may not play each other
again in the playoffs, which will seed teams 1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6 and 4 vs. 5 in a two-game
tournament. After Tuesday, if the seeds hold, it will be 1 vs. 4 and 2 vs. 3 in Super Bowls. At
the end, two teams in each division will be left standing.
No doubt, the flawed format will be changed before next season.
Still, did we mention the current system makes Thanksgiving games more important?
While Fitchburg likely needs to beat rival Leominster to stay in the postseason hunt,
the logjam fighting for the final Division 2 spots includes Grafton, Millbury, Leicester
and Shepherd Hill. Then there’s the question of what 10-0 team will get the top stop —
Auburn or David Prouty?
Confused? You’re not alone.
In Division 3, the winner of the Narragansett vs. Murdock game is in the playoffs, while
the loser must hope Maynard doesn’t upset Clinton or Hudson doesn’t beat Marlboro.
Of course, anything is possible on Thanksgiving. Especially this year.

his year’s clash is shaping up to be a great
one as both teams are playoff bound and are
playing to increase their standing in the Division
2 postseason. The Pioneers snapped the Indians’ four-game streak with a shutout win last
year, but the Indians have plenty of firepower
heading into this year’s matchup. Senior quarterback Donovan Biron has thrown for more than
1,000 yards, while sophomore all-star Rocco
Distefano has emerged as one of the top young
backs in the area, rushing for 749 yards. Senior
Justin Sundara is a top target on both sides of the
ball, gaining 417 yards receiving and also picking off seven passes. You have to bring your “A”
game to beat the Indians, as Bartlett’s three
losses have come to strong teams in Auburn,
David Prouty and Northbridge. The Pioneers are
hoping to add to that list, as Southbridge has
been led by a trio of solid backs in Jamie Ortiz
(759 rushing yards), Hashian Rosario (635) and
Jose Rosario (415). The Pioneers have a find in
junior QB Josh MacNeil, who has passed for
nearly 800 yards.

Last year: Maynard, 18-13.
Series: Clinton leads, 30-19-1.
fter going 3-19 over his first three seasons,
coach Paul Constantino has his Division 3A
champion Gaels gunning under his Delaware
Wing-T, and getting back at the Tigers for last
year’s tough loss would be a fine way to enter
the postseason. Under former St. Peter-Marian coach Justin Ball as offensive coordinator,
Clinton has been a threat for the big-gainer
whenever touching the ball. Philip Nobrega
(745 yards, 11 TDs), senior Josue Guerra
(719, 9) and junior Joe Rice (654, 7) are all
averaging about 10 yards a carry. Defensively,
however, is where these Gaels have really Clinton junior running back
turned things around, allowing only 78 points Joe Rice
after yielding 263 last year. Senior linebacker
Andrew Holfinger — the Division 3A Defensive MVP — has eight QB sacks among
his 98 tackles, and junior defensive end Jon Arnone has added 61⁄2 sacks. Rice
has six interceptions and Cody Trautner four. Under first-year coach Kevin
Capone, the Tigers are averaging nearly 25 points a game. Senior running back
Jake Tyler needs 78 yards for 1,000 rushing, and junior multiple threat Jack
Sprague (13 touchdowns) could pass 1,000 all-purpose yards, and he averages
18.3 yards a catch. Senior Jason Silva has thrown for eight TDs, could finish with
more than 1,000 yards, and he has picked off four passes. Senior linebacker Brian
King leads Central Mass. with 128 tackles.

he Division 1B champion Panthers are hoping
to cap a perfect regular season by beating the
Hawks for the fourth straight year. The Panthers
head into the game following their biggest victory
of the year, 22-20 in overtime over Leominster.
Senior A.C. Carter, the Division 1B Offensive
MVP, already has Division 1 offers from Holy
Cross and the University of San Diego, which is
no surprise considering he is one of the top
shutdown defensive backs in Central Mass. He
has 989 rushing yards and nearly 400 receiving
yards. Carter and quarterback A.J. Scerra (492
rushing yards) provide a formidable attack, while
speedster Evan Purvis can spark the air attack.
Senior Neal Vigeant, the league Defensive MVP,
leads a solid defense that has allowed only 109
points. With a five-game losing streak, the
Hawks know handing their archrivals their first
loss will make their season a success. Karl Sery
leads the ground game with 676 yards, while
Dana Barry and Jake Wardwell can carry the load
if needed. Barry has thrown for more than 1,100
yards, with Brandon Payne-Drouin and Wes Pellerin his top targets. Nick Schwall, the Hawks’
lone all-star, leads the offensive line.

57th Thanksgiving meeting
10:15 a.m., Dick Walsh Field, Northboro
Radio: None.
Last year: Westboro, 27-6.
Series: Westboro leads, 36-19-1.
t’s been a long season for the Tomahawks,
who graduated 17 players from last year’s
team and went up against six ranked squads,
and they’d like nothing better than to stun the
Rangers at home. Junior Kyle McGinnity
replaced three-year starter Mike Vulcano at
quarterback and proved to be a two-way threat,
rushing for more than 600 yards and four touchdowns and passing for more than 500 yards and
five scores. His prime target is senior Adam
Scopetski (10.7 yards per catch, 2 TDs). The
Rangers are in the middle of the playoff hunt.
Senior Eric Thomas won the QB job, replacing
graduated two-way threat Brian Gove, and has
completed about half of his passes for 775 yards
and five TDs. Westboro has power in its backfield, led by senior Tucker Brady (82 carries,
643 yards, 10 TDs). Classmate Brian Orlando
(437 yards, 7 TDs) is averaging 6.1 yards a
carry, and junior Sam Nichols (77 carries, 3 TDs)
grounds out the key yardage. The three have
combined for 231 carries, 1,402 yards and 20
TDs. Junior linebacker Andrew Grant leads the
Rangers with 77 tackles.

30th Thanksgiving meeting

Series: Holy Name leads, 15-14.
Last year: Wachusett, 20-0.
erhaps the biggest holiday game this
year. Again. Wachusett is 10-0 and
ranked No. 1 in the Hometeam media poll.
Holy Name is 9-1 and ranked fourth. Last
year the Mountaineers defeated the outmanned Naps handily on Thanksgiving, only
to lose the postseason rematch, 16-10, as
Holy Name advanced to the Super Bowl,
which it won. Bad blood? You bet. As
always, the Naps will run, run and run some
more. Division 1C MVP Billy Derosier is the
horse with 126 carries for 1,216 yards and
13 TDs. Shawn Kelly has 94 carries for 732
yards and nine TDs, while freshman Quron
Wright has 63 carries for 703 yards and 17
TDs, and Kevin Donohue 76 carries for 552
yards and seven TDs. Wachusett also has a
1,000-yard rusher in Division 1A Offensive
MVP Matt Pedone (13 TDs), who is backed
up by Eric Darko (88 carries, 726 yards, 12
TDs). The Mountaineers also boast a stingy
defense, led by all-stars Casey Devereaux
and Gary White, while Connor McDavitt is
one of the top kickers around.

85th Thanksgiving meeting
10:30 a.m., Fitton Field, Worcester
Radio: None.
Last year: St. John’s, 28-6.
Series: St. John’s leads, 50-27-7.
hile the Pioneers have been impressive in
winning eight games and have dominated
this series in recent years, the Guardians promise to make things difficult while trying to secure a
postseason berth. Senior running back Daiquan
Yarrell eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing in Week 9.
Quarterback Lamar Edmunds progressed
behind an experienced line, and has passed for
10 touchdowns. His top target is junior wide
receiver Gavin O’Neil, who averages 29 yards a
catch with seven TDs. This offense continues to
thrive on big plays, as senior tight end Kyle
Brenner goes nearly 20 yards per reception with
three scores. But defense has made St. PeterMarian a winner. Brenner, a defensive end, has
104 tackles, while Edmunds (6 interceptions)
and all-stars Mike McGee and Jordan Knowles
(121⁄2 sacks) are among the CMass statistical
leaders. St. John’s is trying to extend its Turkey
Day winning streak to seven. Junior Richard
Rodgers has hauled in 15 scoring passes, with
senior QB Griffin Murphy delivering. Murphy, a
league all-star, has thrown for 23 touchdowns
and more than 1,600 yards, and has rushed for
over 500 yards. Juniors Chris Dulmaine (19
catches, 339 yards, 4 TDs) and all-star Dan Light
(15, 325, 2) are other favored targets. On
defense, Tim Wickstrom (55) and all-stars Shane
McGrail (51) and Troy Moore (45) are the Pioneers’ leading tacklers. Rodgers, the Division 1A
Defensive MVP, has four interceptions.

his year, the oldest Thanksgiving matchup in the area pits two teams with
something to prove against each other. Leominster is trying to rebound from a
22-20 loss overtime loss to Marlboro, after posting an impressive win against
Shrewsbury. Fitchburg had a tough time containing Gardner’s ground game last
time out, losing, 24-14, after leading, 14-0, to drop to .500. That, combined with
some leftover emotion from last year’s overtime contest should make this one a
game to watch. The teams have fared similarly against most common opponents,
both having beaten North Middlesex and Algonquin, while falling to Brockton,
Wachusett and St. John’s. The only difference is the Red Raiders fell to Shrewsbury, 10-0. The Red Raiders’ offense has been led recently by backs Steph’fon
Teague and Tyrie Osby, who have stepped up with starting back Byron Teague
sidelined the last two games with a quadriceps injury. In two starts, Osby ran for
119 and 210 yards. For the Blue Devils, watch Malik Daniel, who has rushed for
more than 900 yards this season.

he challenge is there for the Pirates, going up against
the powerful Rockets, who haven’t lost a game in
Central Mass. since 2007 and have outscored their
opponents, 331-70. Under new coach Jeff Parcells, the
Pirates are finding their way on offense, and most of their
key skill position players will be back next season. Junior
co-captain Nick Tessier has rushed for 1,207 yards and
12 touchdowns. Kayvon Lewis is averaging more than
20 yards on his 12 receptions, while junior Jeff Bolio has
thrown for around 500 yards. Look for junior defensive
back Dan Klein on the pass rush — he has six sacks this
season. The Rockets, who won last year’s Division 2A
Super Bowl, are trying to extend their Thanksgiving Day
winning streak to 10. The Rockets’ backfield features a
pair of Division 2A all-stars in seniors Brian Desimone
(926 yards) and Brenden VanBeekom (650 yards, 7
TDs, 94 points). Quarterback Marcus Backlin has completed better than 50 percent of his passes, mostly to
Steve Wallace and Antonio Leatham. Division 2A Defensive MVP Doug Flink leads an outstanding defense, with
some help from all-stars Anthony Mandela and Macy
Washington.

Last year: Leicester, 15-0.
Series: Leicester leads, 26-14.
ast year’s matchup saw Prouty looking
toward this year. Although the Panthers got
shut out, sophomore Zach Grasis had 115
rushing yards, becoming the school’s first
sophomore to surpass 1,000 yards. Grasis
has done much better than that as a junior,
rushing for more than 1,700 yards and earning
the Division 2B Offensive MVP. The Panthers
have ridden Grasis to an undefeated record
(10-0, 6-0 Division 2B) and they have scored
more than 30 points in every game except one,
a 28-13 defeat of Millbury. Defensive MVP
Christian Ricard leads a solid unit. Leicester
has also experienced success this season in
coach Tim Griffiths’ return to the sideline. The
Wolverines were 4-5, 3-2 (before Friday’s
game) and could present a defensive challenge for the Panthers, having only allowed 30
points once. Three times they have kept an
opponent under 10 points. Leading the way is
junior Ryan O’Neill, who has been proficient at
getting to the quarterback.

Chris Reusch’s jersey hangs on a fence that surrounds Clinton’s practice field, a reminder of a player who would’ve been the Gaels’ starting center this season.
Clinton High players, coaches remember Chris Reusch with words, wins

ill Reusch pulls his twin brother’s helmet from his locker, tucks
it under his arm and heads to the
field.
He has done this every practice
and every game, home and away,
since the Clinton High football season started in August, part of a set of
rituals the team follows to remember
and draw inspiration from Chris Reusch, who was killed in a car accident as he and friends
returning from a snowboarding trip to Vermont last
December.
Will Reusch carries the helmet to midfield for the pregame for the coin toss, Chris Reusch having been
appointed a captain by coach Paul Constantino as an acknowledgement of the unusual sacrifice the lineman made
during his junior season last year.
Izzy Feliz, a senior co-captain along with Cam Lucci and
Will Reusch, carries Chris’s practice jersey to the field. A
hooded sweatshirt with the number 75 and “Reusch” on the
back accompanies the jersey, another physical reminder of
a player who would’ve been Clinton’s starting center this
season.
“It’s a really big deal for me and for a lot of other guys,”
Will Reusch said. “We were really close. We said we were
going to play hard not only for ourselves and each other
this year, but for my brother because he couldn’t be here.”

COVER STORY
RICK CINCLAIR
Will Reusch places his twin brother’s helmet next to his jersey before a recent practice.
Constantino awarded Chris
Reusch the game ball after the
Gaels’ opening win over Narragansett, and teammates immediately brought it to his grave in
Reservoir Pines Cemetery.
“You definitely feel his presence, you really do,” Constantino
said. “I firmly believe he is with
us, his spirit is with us.”
He told his players at the start
of the season to think about Chris
when times get tough and draw
strength from his memory. They
have done just that.
“It pushes us to go harder, go
farther,” Will Reusch said. “We
appreciate what we have knowing my brother couldn’t be here.
We play with him inside us.”
Will Reusch played both ways
against Narragansett and by the
fourth quarter was gassed.
He said he threw up on the
field, but he thought about his
brother and made two sacks late
in the game to help seal the victory.
“The Oakmont game, we were
all tired and weary in the huddle,” Feliz said. “I just got in the
middle and said, ‘Just remember
who you’re playing for, ask for
that inner strength.’ Luckily, that
gave us a little extra strength,
and we drove down the field, and
we scored.”
And won. It was the biggest
victory of the season, putting
Clinton in first place in their
division.
After going 0-11 two years ago
and 3-8 last year, the Gaels go
into their Thanksgiving game
against Maynard 9-1, the only
blemish a loss to Nashoba. They
will head into the playoffs as the
Division 3A champions.
The inspiration provided by a
fallen teammate has been a factor.
“We have an advantage over
every team because they don’t
have anything like that to play
for,” Lucci said. “We just work
hard every day in practice
because we know he’s over there
practicing with us. We know he’d
want us to work hard, so that’s
what we do.”
It has been an emotional season
for the Gaels, who also have had
to deal with the loss in September
of one of last year’s cheerleaders
in another car crash. They have
handled it well.
“There’s some sadness, but it’s
more joy because we look at it
like we’re doing it for him,” Will
Reusch said. “We’re playing and
being successful because of my
brother. We look at it like he’s
out there with us.”
Clinton isn’t the first team to
be rocked by tragedy or to keep
physical reminders of a fallen
teammate close by for inspiration. The Los Angeles Angels of
Anaheim did the same thing
when 22-year-old pitcher Nick
Adenhart was killed in a car
crash last spring.
There is an element that makes
the Chris Reusch story special,
though. Constantino still gets
choked up when he talks about it.
It’s why he appointed Chris
Reusch a captain, a decision not
made for emotional or sentimental reasons, but for what his
player did last year.
Chris McCrell, now at Nichols
College, was a co-captain in 2008.
He was limited by a degenerative
hip condition, but because of his
determination and hard work,
Constantino and his assistants
agreed that he deserved to be the
starting center.
It was the right thing to do.
The decision, though, meant
that Chris Reusch wouldn’t be a
starter and would get less playing
time. That part bothered Constantino.
He talked to his player about
the situation several times,
including the day before last
Thanksgiving.
“He stopped me in mid sentence, and put his arm on my
shoulder and said, ‘Coach, don’t
worry, you did the right thing. He
deserved to play. I have next
year,’” Constantino said.
Three weeks later, assistant
coach Tony Gannon, overcome
with grief, called to say that
Chris Reusch had died.
“When he said, ‘I have next
year,’ it just hit me,” Constantino
said. “Whenever I got the call, I
said, ‘He’s going to have next
year.’ ”

his has been a one-sided series in the
Vikings’ favor, but this year’s game figures
to be a fairly even match. Both teams have
losing records, Nashoba Tech 4-5, Monty
Tech 3-7. After going 0-11 last year, the
Bulldogs lost their first six games this season
before a 21-6 win over Keefe Tech. They
reeled off three straight victories after the
losing streak, allowing just 12 points, then lost
to Valley Tech in its last game. Nashoba Tech
won its first two games, but has had trouble
getting things going since. Monty Tech is led
by senior running back Jeff Degnan (5.6 yards
per carry, 6 TDs) and two-way starter James
Pierce. Senior quarterback Tyler Greathead
directs the Nashoba Tech offense. Ryan
Strainese has scored five touchdowns. Pat
Kilbride scored three touchdowns in the
Vikings’ last game, a 26-20 loss to Murdock.

he Tigers have kept themselves in the middle
of the Division 3 playoff picture by doing
things right on each side of the ball. Offensively,
sophomore Connor Reardon has exploded onto
the scene, leading Littleton’s ground game with
12 touchdowns. He has been complemented by
a passing game led by senior all-star quarterback Adam Whitcomb, who can also take off on
the ground. His favorite receiver is classmate
and Division 3B Offensive MVP James Williamson, who also has been a big contributor on
defense. He and Defensive MVP Derek Karr
have consistently ranked among the top tacklers
in Central Mass. throughout the season. All-stars
Mac Hanlon and John Williamson will also help
the Tigers. Ayer remains in a rebuilding phase
since its co-op agreement with Groton-Dunstable ended two seasons ago. The Panthers have
had bright spots this season in running back
Dashawn Taylor (12 TDs) and all-star lineman
Devon Sedor and Jake Seeley. Ayer is looking
for its first win since a season-opening victory
over Hyde Park.

ast year was a dream season for Tantasqua,
which ended its 11-game holiday losing
streak to Shepherd Hill en route to a 13-0 record
and Super Bowl title. This Thanksgiving, the
Warriors (2-8) will need a win and lots of help
from others to reach the postseason with the format now
including eight Division 2
teams. Same goes for the
Rams, who could get into the
playoffs with a win. Tantasqua, which has lost six
straight, is led by Rico Balderelli, who has carried 149
times for 839 yards and three
TDs. Tim Santilli has caught Shepherd Hill
25 passes for 243 yards and coach Chris
two touchdowns, while Alex Lindstrom
Beaudoin has 12 catches for
220 yards and 2 TDs. Shepherd Hill will keep it
on the ground with Brett Anctil (132 carries, 888
yards, 8 TDs), Jamie Gilrein (89 carries, 396

13th Thanksgiving meeting
6 p.m. Wednesday, Lunenburg High Field
9
Radio: None.
Last year: St. Bernard’s, 19-14.
10
Series: St. Bernard’s leads, 8-4.
12
he Bernardians handed the Blue Knights
15
their first loss last season, holding on for a
16
narrow win in Fitchburg, so Lunenburg will be
looking for revenge. The teams enter on fairly
17
even footing, each winning three games.
21
Lunenburg has victories over Ayer, Hudson and
22
West Boylston, while St. Bernard’s has beaten
Narragansett, Shepherd Hill and South. The
23
Blue Knights started their season with four
24
straight losses, the first three by shutout, before
25
turning things around. Lunenburg, led by senior
quarterback Mike Xarras (757 yards rushing,
26
531 passing, 6 rushing TDs, 7.9 yards per
27
carry), has averaged 22 points per game since
28
those shutouts. Craig Spyropoulos has been
30
one of the top defenders in the area with 103
tackles. The Bernardians jumped to a 2-1 start,
31
but have struggled
since. They are led by
senior tailback Evan Brideau (690 yards rushing, So. TDs) and junior
wide receiver Brendon
Jean-Simon
(18.5
yards per catch, 6 TDs).
Cam Foster has led St.
Bernard’s on defense
with 721⁄2 tackles.

74th Thanksgiving meeting

Series: Athol leads, 44-28-1.
his figures to be one of the best games of the
day, pitting a pair of Western Mass. top 10
teams, both headed to the Western Mass. playoffs. Athol, whose only blemish in a 9-1 season
was a three-point loss to Frontier, is led by
quarterback Eric LaFountain, who has run for
776 yards and nine touchdowns and passed for
15 scores. Athol’s attack also features Jack
O’Connell (497 yards rushing, 5.5 per carry, 5
TDs), Matt Kuniholm (394 yards, 8.9 per carry, 5
TDs rushing, 4 receiving) and Tyler Hood (34
catches, 13.3 yards per catch, 9 TDs receiving,
2 rushing). The Red Raiders will be out to avenge
last year’s home loss to the Senators. Athol had
won the three previous years. Brian Beauchemin
keyed Mahar’s effort last Thanksgiving, running
for 123 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He will
be trying to help preserve the Senators’ undefeated season this time. He has had a terrific
year, including a 335-yard, five-TD effort against
Sci-Tech last month. Beauchemin and teammate Isaiah Jones have each run for more than
1,000 yards this season.

his game will mark the last time Yawin Smallwood suits up for Doherty before playing for
the University of Connecticut next season. The
talented senior has had a tough year, dealing
with a dislocated finger and a mild concussion,
but he proved he is still a presence when he took
the field. Curtis Hickson has picked up the slack,
as the senior earned the Division 1C Defensive
MVP award and has been the team’s leading
receiver. He is among the Central Mass. leaders
in both tackles and sacks, and has also returned
an interception for a touchdown. The Highlanders have a strong line, led by Kevin Kohl and
Angelo Moraitis. Burncoat also will say goodbye
to all-star Jonathan Winbush, who will play his
final game. The Patriots also have a talented
wideout in Randy Quartey, while all-star defensive lineman Richie Asifiri will make the Highlanders work. Burncoat’s biggest weapon might be
quarterback Kenny Bates, the Division 1C Offensive MVP, who is coming off a memorable game
against South. The senior returned an interception for a touchdown, passed for another and ran
for one more, all in the second quarter.

30th Thanksgiving meeting
10 a.m., Arthur I. Hurd Field, Ashburnham
Radio: WGAW-AM (1340).
Last year: Oakmont, 26-25.
Series: Oakmont leads, 20-9
t takes a long memory to recall that this series used to be close. The Spartans,
however, have emerged dominant and won 10 straight Thanksgiving meetings. It
took a fourth-quarter comeback last year for Oakmont to keep the streak going. The
Spartans have scored more
than 40 points seven times,
including three 50-plus performances. They have three
players — Eric Howlett, the
injured Seth Sheridan and
Jon Jacobs — who have
placed in the top 10 in scoring
in Central Mass. The Spartans
scored 400 points this season when Holy Name was the
only other local school to
even reach 300. Howlett, the
Division 3A Offensive MVP,
can catch, run and kick for the
Spartans. Quarterback Luke
Bakanowsky has weapons in
fellow all-stars Jacobs and TE
John Mattus. The Wildcats
have a top scorer of their own
in all-star running back Jamison Craft, who is only a sophomore. He has surpassed
1,200 yards in offense this
season, rushing for over 900
and getting more than another
300 receiving. All-star lineman Luke Kondrotas and Rob
Harasimowicz lead the way.
Junior QB Steve Guercio has
eclipsed 1,000 yards passing
Oakmont senior wide receiver Eric Howlett
for the year.

Last year: Shrewsbury, 16-13.
Series: Milford leads, 20-12-1.
oth teams hope to keep postseason dreams
alive with a win, as Shrewsbury is going to rely
on all-star running back Hunter Beckmann
(1,279 yards, 10 TDs) to keep the Colonials alive.
Quarterback Nate Theodoss, also an all-star DB,
has six TD passes. Senior all-star linebacker
Tyler Jordan, sophomore outside linebacker
Kristian Jackson and senior defensive end
Michael D’Amico, all with more than 60 tackles,
will keep the pressure on Scarlet Hawks QB
Tommy Leung. Milford is hoping to rebound from
a heartbreaking loss to Nashoba, where the
Chieftains scored 29 points in 15 minutes to get
the win. Leung, a senior three-year starter, has
thrown for more than 1,100 yards and 10 TDs for
the second straight year. He is one of the area’s
top signal-callers. Leung has completed better
than 60 percent of his passes in each of the past
two seasons. His prime targets include senior
Matt Cristino and senior Brett Kane. To gain the
tough yards, Leung will hand off to senior Elias
Giokas and Nick Valente, who are both averaging
about 5 yards a rush. Giokas is a league all-star at
LB, while Joe Szerszunowicz is an all-star DL.

lways a big game, but it’s even bigger this year with each team trying to
improve its playoff position. Uxbridge won seven of its first eight games
but has lost two straight. Meanwhile, Northbridge has won three straight,
including impressive victories over Shepherd Hill and Bartlett. As always,
expect the Rams to throw the ball. Junior all-star quarterback Thomas
Murphy has completed 122 of 226 passes for 1,645 yards and 15 TDs.
Senior tight end Casey Hippert — the Division 2A Offensive MVP — has 47
receptions for 701 yards (a 14.9 average) and 7 TDs, while Ben Richards
has 19 catches for 281 yards and 3 TDs and Evan Mackintosh 11 catches
for 201 yards and 3 TDs. Murphy can also run (56 carries, 458 yards, 6 TDs)
as can Tyrell Damon (42 carries, 392 yards, 5 TDs). Pat McCrohan leads
Uxbridge’s ground attack. The senior has carried the ball 149 times for
1,046 yards and 6 TDs, while Scott Nye has 59 carries for 355 yards and 5
TDs and Tyler Wisserkerke 45 carries for 321 yards and 3 TDs. The
Spartans can also air it out as Dan Tessier has completed 64 of 150 passes
for 764 yards and 6 TDs. Scott Nye has 17 catches for 271 yards and 3 TDs.

he Chieftains will be playing for a postseason
berth this Thanksgiving, while the Patriots will
be playing for pride. After suffering through an
0-11 season a year ago, North Middlesex has

which defeated Milford, 29-28, in its last game,
also has wins over Gardner, Burncoat and
Clinton. The Chieftains are led by quarterback Will Hurley, the fourth-ranked passer
in Central Mass. who has completed 103
of 190 passes for 1,231 and nine touchdowns. His favorite target is Connor
Wyand, who has 38 catches for 596 yards
and six TDs. Bill Lombardo, Nashoba’s
top running back, has carried 93 times for
449 yards and eight TDs, and caught 12
passes for 161 yards and another TD.
Luke Cressman has also carried 72 times
for 333 yards and a TD. North Middlesex’s
ground game is led by Evan Woolacott (84

hings were looking up when the Cougars beat Pathfinder, 14-8, in
the opener, but Quaboag has taken its lumps in its first varsity
football season, losing nine straight games, most in lopsided fashion.
That’s to be expected for a novice team, which played junior varsity

he Pleasant Street rivalry enters its second
year as Nipmuc brings its high-powered
offense across the road to meet the Beavers.
Senior Derek Fernandes has passed for more
than 1,900 yards to lead the attack, finding junior

he Lions have won the last two Thanksgiving meetings. Last year, the Lions
took advantage of five turnovers to cruise
to a Reservoir Bowl win. West Boylston
has been led by a strong senior class,
including running backs Rob Lombardi
and Jeremiah O’Toole and captains Jeremy Phelps, Tim Brown, Jimmy Gore and
Mike Pusateri. The future looks bright with
sophomore running back Colby Bostek
getting some big carries down the stretch,
and sophomore quarterback Dan Polnerow and junior returner Josh Igwenagu in
the mix. Quabbin is coming off a 13-10 win
over Tantasqua, as Chris O’Rourke ran 14
yards for a touchdown with 48 seconds left
to stun the Warriors. Sophomore quarterback Kenny Goodnow threw for 191 yards
against Tantasqua and has more than 500
passing yards this year. His top target has
been Jon Kenyon (270 yards), while
senior Tyler Przypek has rushed for 267
yards.

he Crusaders have adapted
well to Division 3A, as GrotonDunstable is fighting for one of
the top playoff spots. GrotonDunstable will be making its second playoff appearance in two
years thanks to a strong senior
class led by quarterback Ryan
Romich and running back Dan
Eipp. Junior Shane Penney has
also emerged as a top offensive
threat and will help fill the holes
left by graduation next year. Romich has led the Crusaders with 12
touchdowns this year and leads a
high-powered offense that has
scored more than 300 points —
including more than 100 points in
the last three games. GrotonDunstable is coming into the
game off a tough loss to Oakmont, but the Crusaders are hoping to spring board into the postseason by handing the Tigers
their seventh consecutive loss.
Groton-Dunstable will have to
stop Tyngsboro’s speedy tail- Groton-Dunstable senior quarterback Ryan
