The day started a little cold and foggy; but after we stopped for
breakfast, the sun came out and the sky was clear. It was a perfect
day for a nice long ride. After a stop at the Victorville Harley Davidson
and gas, we were off again. The group pulled into Calico just before
noon, and the heat came on. If you've never been to Calico Days
before, it's worth the trip for two reasons: one, it's a nice ride and two,
all the people. Cowboys and cowgirls, people everywhere dressed in
western costumes and acting the part. Rick entered the Beard and
Mustache contest, but the competition was fierce; they didn't give out
ribbons for fourth place. Maybe next year.
We pulled out of Calico just after 3:00 pm only to run into
TRAFFIC – yuk. Luckily Capt' Dale lead us safely through and around
to our next stop, a bike shop called Chaparral. Wow, what a big place.

Wow where did the year go it seems like only
yesterday we were planning for the 2004 HOG year
and now it is coming to a close. But we still have
numerous activities coming up in the next two
months that it should provide everyone with
something to choose from to get involved with.
We will be smoking the BBQ’s again. This time
on the 13th of November we will be helping out the
dealership with their one-year anniversary party
cookin up the links. Please mark your calendar for
this day, as we will need some help in flippin’ the
burgers. More to follow on this over the next few
weeks.

Our Chapter’s Hope for the Holidays Toy Run is coming up November
the 21st and it promises to be an extra special event. All for the cost of an
unwrapped toy, your day will be spent with friends enjoying vendors,
music, poker run, and FOOD (breakfast and lunch) plus the joy of giving to
some kids that may not have the blessings that we all have and share.
Thanksgiving should be a brighter day for some of our Local Marines as
this year we are having our first Host a Marine for the Holidays event. We
do hope that you will be able to open your home and hearts to host a
Marine for the Holidays.
Ever heard of flying frozen turkeys?? We will be riding in the San
Marcos Christmas Parade on December 5th and handing out frozen turkeys
to the lucky needy in the crowd. This will be our third year doing this and it
is allot of fun and it makes you feel good doing something for folks that
may not be able to provide a turkey for their Christmas dinner.
Then on the 10th of December we all get to dress up a little and enjoy
our Holiday Party. This year’s party has all the makings of the best Holiday
Party we have put on. The Chapter is picking up most of the cost this year
so please make your reservations early so as to not be left out of the action
as we only have 240 seats.
I want to take this moment to thank the folks that stepped up for the
2005 Officer team. It takes a very dedicated person to say yes I will help.
I look at the folks that make up the 2005 team and guess what folks, 2005
is going to be a great HOG year. You know about 7 or 8 months ago I said
that I would like to see our membership hit 600 this year and yes we did it.
Now I would like to see those 600 folks get involved and really find out
what the meaning of HOG Values and the HOG Culture are.
Thank you all for a great 2004 and thank you for the vote of confidence
for your HOG Officer Team 2005.

What a busy couple of months we’ve had. In
addition to all our regular activities, we had a great
Heart Ride and California State Rally. If you missed the
State Rally, you missed a great event. Next year the
State Rally will be located up around the Modesto/
Jamestown area in central California. If you have not
ridden around the Jamestown area, I would recommend
you do at some point. It is located in the middle of our
Gold Country along Hwy 49 at the foot of the Sierra
Mountains. There is a lot to do in this area in addition
to beautiful roads to follow. We are waiting to hear
about our California State Rally for 2006. I will keep

you informed.
I just received the Autumn issue of the Chapter Officer Newsletter. In
addition to several great articles concerning the operation of H.O.G. Chapters,
it lists the 2005 Primary Officers Training dates and locations. For the West it
will again be in Las Vegas on May 13-14. For those of you wishing to be
future primary officers, this is a great event and very motivating. Some of
the seminars include: H.O.G. Leadership/Chapter Management, Risk
Management, Financial Management, Valuing Volunteers, and Chapters and
Dealers. There are more seminars, but those who attend cannot go to them
all. Breakfast starts at 7:30 am and the classes end around 6:00 pm. It is a
busy two days but is well worth the trip. Again, for our future Primary
Officers, this is something to look forward to.

After a bathroom break and a little
shopping, we regrouped and came
up with an alternate way to avoid
traffic and get to our next
destination. Off we went, south on
215 then on to Cajalco Road (a road
I had never been on) past Lake
Matthews (a lake I had never even
heard of).
As the sun was setting, a light
fog rolled across the hills turning the
sky different shades of blue, yellow,
and pink. Just then we rounded a
curve and the perfect picture came
into view: 10 bikes going around
the curve with a beautiful sunset in
the background.
Breathtaking!
Now you're wondering, where is this
beautiful picture? It's in my head,
my camera was in the side bag. Live
and learn.

We ended the day with a nice
dinner at Tom's Farm. It was truly a
wonderful day; and the best part
(besides spending it with friends),
Rick "Road Guard in Training" got to
run sweep all day.

A Harley for Pooh

I remember it as if it were yesterday. After a
whirlwind, three-day weekend in Laughlin in 1999,
Bill and I decided to ride home alone through the
desert. The day was perfect, warm and brilliantly
sunny. We rode two-up on Bill's maroon Dyna
Convertible chatting non-stop as the miles went by,
wishing the weekend would last just a little bit
longer. Along an empty stretch of road, somewhere
near Amboy, Bill suddenly pulled over for reasons
unknown. I dismounted, figuring a change in jacket
or gloves was in order. Instead, Bill slid from the
front seat to the back and with a coy smile said,
"Your turn." I had been tooling around town on a
Sportster 1200 and had only obtained my license
that month, but had never ridden a bike like Bill's
Dyna. At 4'11" I knew I couldn't touch the ground.
Bill assured me that he wouldn't let anything
happen and would get me from first into second
gear before handing the bike over.With arms around
me and hands over mine, we left the side of the
road.
I could barely breathe through the
excitement. Bill shifted into second for me and then
whispered in my ear, "It's all yours," and sat back a
bit as I fully took over the controls. Third gear,
fourth gear, fifth. Soon we were sailing along at 60
miles per hour and I was completely in charge. Bill,
leaning back, taking in the scenery, wasn't the least
bit concerned with me at the helm.
At that
moment I was absolutely smitten, with both the
man and the machine.
Twenty miles of sheer
exhilaration later I felt it was time to turn the Dyna
back over to Bill and we finished our ride home in
companionable silence, relishing a moment in time
never to be forgotten.
Forty-seven years earlier, Bill's Dad put him at
the controls of his 1953 Bagger. Bill was only seven
years old when his father slid his hands from his
own. Bill spent years riding in his Dad's side car,
participating in poker runs, road races and Harley
rallies, twenty years before HOG even existed. And
now history had repeated itself in his gesture with
me and we were looking forward to our Harley
adventures together.
The photo album grew thick over the next 18
months with pictures of poker runs and bike shows,

observation runs and charity rides, HOG
meetings and get acquainted rides,
backyard barbeques and pool parties,
and quiet rides together up and down the
coast, stopping at Starbucks, the
Roadhouse,
Yogis
and
more.
Somewhere along the way I began riding
the Dyna alongside Bill on his FXR,
thrilled to be loaned such a machine.
In October of 2001, life changed
again. At Bill's 50th birthday party, with
the lights dimmed and music playing in
the background, in front of 60 dear
friends and family, Bill presented me
with a very special gift ... POOHS HD, my
own license plate, and the papers to his
Dyna Convertible.
Pooh was my
nickname from the time I was a toddler,
known only by family and close friends.
He told the crowd that he felt it was high
time I had my own Harley. Then, as the
applause died down and the music
changed to our special song, Bill bent to
one knee, pulled a diamond ring from his
pocket and asked me to be his wife.
Since that evening Bill and I have
ridden thousands and thousands of miles
together all over the United States.
There are now seven photo albums on
our shelves filled with photos of us riding
from the shores of Hawaii to the streets
of Chicago.
We've held hands riding
along the back roads of Route 66 and
huddled under an overpass in a Louisiana
lightning storm. I no longer ride that
magical maroon Dyna Convertible but
every time I see it cruising the streets of
North County, I am taken back to that
special day in the desert that began our
amazing journey together.

My Father and the Motorcycle

My father served in the
8th Air Force in England
maintaining
the
Consolidated B24 Liberators
that relentlessly bombed
the North African
and
European theaters during
WWII. He recently told me
a "war" story that I will
pass along since it includes
a motorcycle.
After the war he joined
the Air National Guard in Barbara and her father, Robert.

his training. One day my
father and two other mechanics were assigned to fly to a
base in Sioux Falls to replace the engine in a North American
P51 Mustang. One of the other mechanics had a Harley
Davidson. It seemed like a good idea to take it with them so
they would have transportation in Sioux Falls.
The
motorcycle and toolboxes were loaded aboard a Douglas C47
(DC 3 to us civilians) and strapped down. On arrival, the
motorcycle and tools were unloaded. One of the local GIs
told them that there was a county fair underway that night
and suggested they might want to go. The three of them
were anxious to get to work on the P51, so they declined.
They had gotten the "A" frame erected to remove the
prop when they had second thoughts about the Fair. Work
stopped, showers were taken, and clothes changed. The
three of them got on the Harley – the owner and my father
sat on the seat as best they could and the other mechanic sat
on the rear fender. They had a really good time at the Fair.
For the trip back, my father found it was his turn to ride
the rear fender.
It was not a very comfortable ride,
especially with the Harley's ridged frame. When they stopped
at a light in town, he stood up to give his bottom a rest.
Then the light turned green; and the bike was gone in a flash
leaving him standing there, legs spread, in the middle of the
street. He could hear the couple in the car behind him
laughing their heads off. After a moment, he headed for the
shadows to ponder his situation and embarrassment. The
couple drove off laughing. A few minutes later the couple's
car came back around and stopped. They asked if he thought
his buddies were coming back. He said it didn't look like it.
They asked where he was going. He said he was going back
to the base. They told him to get in and took him to the
base.
A story like that gets around pretty quickly on a military
base, and by the next day it must have been common
knowledge as one of the officers called him over and handed
him a set of keys and said, "See that Jeep over there? Its
yours as long as you don't let either of those other two guys
near it." Military justice at its best.

One of the most incredible things I’ve ever
seen is a long line of Harley’s heading down the
road. I always have to catch my breath because
I think it’s such a beautiful sight.
It never
matters if I’m in my car or in the middle of the
pack of riders on my own bike; I still get this
flutter in my chest when I see a parade of
motorcycles going down the road.
On October 11, 2004, I was in my husband’s
truck behind a group of about 40 Harley’s
crossing the bridge going into Camp Del Mar at
Camp Pendleton. Seeing this particular group
held special meaning to me because they were
there for a momentous occasion. They were
there to welcome home all the members of
Company A, 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion
(3rd AABN), after 7-1/2 months in Iraq. Two of
the members of Company A are HOG members:
Master Sergeant Russ Pankievich (aka Psycho)
and Gunnery Sergeant Davy Hernandez.
I estimate that nearly 400 friends and family
members were present that day to welcome
home our Marines from war. I think each and
every one of those folks were thrilled to hear and
see our Harley friends show up to provide a
“hero’s welcome” to our Marines. Russ’ Mom
and Dad, Els-Britt and Bill, were sitting in the
bleachers next to a large group of people who
were amazed by the sight. They were saying
things like, “Wow, look at all those Harleys!” and
“Wonder what they’re doing here?” Mom took
great pride in standing up and saying, “Those are
my son’s friends and they’re here to help
welcome him home!”

An Amazing Day
As word came that our Marines were getting
closer to arriving at our location, Chief Warrant
Officer Kendrick, the 3rd AABN Family Readiness
Officer, made an announcement. He told all the
family members and friends of Company A that
the Marines had left all their equipment in Iraq
for the company that replaced them. Since that
equipment included their navigational equipment
and our Marines had been gone for so long, they
may not remember their way to the parade deck,
so CWO Kendrick asked the Harley riders to
crank up, rev their engines and help our boys
navigate their way home!

deck. Seeing all the familiar faces, and meeting
many new Harley friends sure made the long
hours of waiting that day so much more fun and
made it go by so much faster for me and for our
family. I can’t thank you enough for taking the
time out of your busy schedules to be there! I
know that many others were there in spirit!

The sign says it all!
Instantly, the 40+ Harley’s cranked up and
started revving their motors and honking their
horns. It was the most beautiful sound I’d ever
heard!!
Even now, the memory makes me
smile.
I can’t begin to describe how that
moment made me feel. Nearly eight months of
worry, wondering and waiting were ending in a
matter of moments and they were ending in a
way that would make those Marines (and
especially my Marine) KNOW that the job they
did was appreciated and that they were viewed
as heroes.
Thank you for making the homecoming of
Company A, 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion,
such AN AMAZING DAY!

SHARE THE HOLIDAYS
The Holiday Season is just around the
corner - a time we celebrate with family and
friends. Over the past several years, our H.O.G.
Chapter has sent care packages each month to
our brave Marines (H.O.G. members and family)
who are serving outside of our Country. With the
recent return of some of our soldiers, many who
do not have family here and will be unable to join
them, the holiday season would be a great time
to reach out and open our hearts and homes and
have them join our families for dinner during
Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, or Christmas.

After about six months of planning, it finally
happened. The California State Rally took place
with registration opening Thursday evening
September 30th and activities on October 1st
and 2nd. I was surprised with how many people
registered on Thursday. There were a lot from
out of town already staying at the sponsoring
location, Pala Casino Hotel & Spa, which has very
nice facilities and plenty of parking.
Friday activities included a Scenic Ride
sponsored by Chula Vista H.O.G. up Palomar
Mountain past the Hide Out on to Santa Isabel
and back. The best of all the rides was our Biggs
H.O.G. and dealership sponsored Observation
Run. This was a 112-mile ride called Animal
House. There were 16 animals the riders had to
find plus 4 bonus questions to boot. In the end
we had 33 riders with all the questions answered
correctly. A drawing was held at the closing
ceremonies for six winners. Five of them won
$50 gift certificates donated by the California
Dealers Association, and one winner walked
away with a leather jacket donated by Biggs
Harley-Davidson & Buell. As our State Rally Ride
Coordinator, I thought that following our Heart
Ride and the volunteers from our group just two
weeks before, an Observation Run would be a lot
of fun and would not require many people to put
it on. It seemed that everyone who went on the
Observation Run had a blast.
Friday evening was spent at Temecula
Harley-Davidson with vendors and a BBQ dinner
sponsored by Quaid and our friends of the Black
Sheep. Several of us wandered over to the
Stampede afterward to learn a little two-steppin'.

California State Rally
Walk around Pala Casino and a drive-in Bike
Show. The most popular ride of the day was the
Poker Run sponsored by Temecula who offered
$1000 for the winning high hand and $250 for
the low hand.
At 4:00 we held Closing Ceremonies. When I
entered the room about an hour before, I
couldn’t believe the size of the room and the
number of chairs. I guessed we would have filled
maybe half of the room – it was sooo big!
Then the people came. I couldn’t believe the
room was full. There were so many Chapters
represented and quite a few from out of state.
There were a lot of prizes to give away other
than the $931 50/50.
J.T. Hasley brought three special prizes from
H.O.G. with our own Mark Collins and Greg
Anderson winning two of them. Many of our
Chapter Members won other gifts.
All-in-all it was a great experience to be
involved in. The 2005 California State Rally will
be up in Modesto/Jamestown, and we are hoping
for the 2006 to be back here.
I want to thank our volunteers who helped
during the rally many of whom sacrificed the
events just to volunteer. You are the BEST!

Hi Biggs Chapter!
It's layer time again, and my favorite
time of year to ride. Crisp mornings and
evenings with comfortable days are hard
to beat. Even in southern California, trees
turn colors and treat us to a show of
nature as we ride along on our steeds.
Couple that with the fact that there is
always something around here that is
blooming, it makes for a really enjoyable
riding experience.
One of the keys to enjoying these rides
to the fullest is to dress in layers. Pile
them on in the mornings, peel them off Photo: Pauline Jamieson
during the day, and pile them back on in
the evenings. The days are shorter and require the use of clear
glasses when we try to stretch those rides and don't get back
home before dark. Heavier gloves also come in handy. Some
people switch to full-face helmets to beat the cooler air. This is
also the time to treat the leather for the upcoming winter riding
season. All in all, this is a very enjoyable time of year.
This brings us to the weather. In southern California, we
have the best biking weather in the U.S. We do, however,
sometimes get rain now and then. We all know, by experience,
not to trust the weatherman (weatherperson). This is a person
who, in southern California, brings absolutely nothing to the
table as far as being accurate, precise, concise, or just plain
truthful. (Ask me what I really think.) It is almost impossible
to plan anything based on a weather forecast. If they say rain,
it's beautiful. If they say a little cloudy, a storm sneaks up on
us and soaks us. They are pretty smart though, as they blame
it on the "computer scenario". What kind of computer is this
anyway? It's probably pink, made by Mattel, and has pictures
of Barbie and Ken on the sides. For all we know, it might even
be and old IBM keypunch with the operators reading the cards
as a fortuneteller would at the carnival.
(You mean the
fortuneteller at the carnival isn't for real? Say it isn't so!) It
could also be three or four computer nerds with pocket
protectors flipping coins in a three out of five contest to decide
which "scenario" to give to the perky blonde so she can
enlighten us on what we have in store. Kind of makes us feel
like suckers, doesn't it? We can put a man on the moon, make
energy from the sun, and find our way on this earth using
satellites. Shucks, we can even make a Harley not leak, but we
can't get a decent weather forecast. Solution: Make them all
ride a Harley to work, and maybe they will pay a little more
attention. We all might get some laughs too, watching the
perky blonde lie to your face with helmet hair. She's also
dressed in layers, of course.

SAFETY NOTES
Settling Down With A Good Book
The skills required to be a proficient
motorcycle rider can be divided in two
categories: operational skills and environmental
skills. Operational skills include the manipulation
of the controls to accelerate, decelerate, and
change direction.
It extends to the precise
control of the bike in all conditions, including
varying coefficients of adhesion and friction, to
make emergency direction changes and stops. It
also includes planning and executing lines
through curves that hit the entrances, apexes,
and exits. And throttle adjustments during up
and down shifts (your passenger should only be
able to tell by the engine sound). Environmental
skills include defensive skills such as the ability
to: read road conditions, predict driver behavior,
recognize high threat situations, and develop
riding and situation management strategies. If
you are really good, you have been working on
both types of skills and always will.
Learning the hard way can kill you so we try
to learn from others. This includes attending an
Experience Rider Course. There are a few books
out there on riding that are beneficial and worth
our time. None may exactly fit your needs and
riding style, but there is still a lot they can teach
you. Many are directed toward the performance
bike crowd, but these are excellent on the
subject of throttle and brake control as well as
general bike control. Cruising and touring books
tend to look more at environment skill.
The father of cruise and tour riding safety
training may be David Hough. His "Proficient
Motorcycling" is excellent and is good for
beginners as well as experienced riders. This is
primarily an environmental skills book, but there
is operational information and theory included.
He has lots of lessons learned on the road, and
he's a good writer. Road riders would do well to
read this book.
The standard for performance bike riding has
been Keith Code's two books: "Twist Of The
Wrist" and "Twist Of The Wrist II". These are
hardcore operational skills books.
Keith has
made the art and science of motorcycle
performance rider training his life's work, and he
is good at it. I have talked to Keith and attended
his school. He is a clear and concise instructor
and his schools are excellent. However, I find
his books difficult to read and the presentation
strange; but the information is there. Racing is

the clear basis of these
books,
but
the
knowledge applies to
the road.
Lee Parks recently
published a book titled
"Total Control" that is
less race oriented than
the "Twist Of The
Wrist" series. It is an
operational skills book.

It has a chapter, Riding
Two Up that was very interesting to me and to
my occasional passenger.
Lee's journalism
background comes through. He has written a
book that is easy to read and understand. I
mentioned this to Lee, and he said that was part
of his reason for writing the book. Lee has also
been a performance riding school instructor.
Another
new
book
is
"Sport
Riding
Techniques"
by
Nick
Ienatsch,
another
motorcycle journalist and performance riding
school instructor. This is an excellent book. It is
mostly an operational skills book, but it has
environmental skills chapters including Urban
Survival that is worth the price of the book. The
chapter has insightful techniques on doing the
type of riding we do most. The chapters Brakes
and Group Riding And The Pace are very good.
What Nick calls 'the pace' should be read by
everyone who thinks they need high speed to
have fun. They don't. Nick gives a hard sell to
my latest favorite slogan, 'Don't ride with idiots'.
I have added this subject to Formation 101.
At Laguna Seca this year, Barbara and I
found
a
book,
"Motorcycle
Design
and
Technology" by Gaetano Cocco.
It is full of
engineering formulas, graphs, and drawings.
Barb took one look and her physics degree
kicked in; she had to have it. What's a guy to do
when his wife wants to buy a book on
motorcycles? There is not a lot out there on the
subject, so this was a real find.
Someone on TV (it was PBS) once said that
"Reading rots the mind", but I would take a
chance on some of the above and see what
happens.

From the Ladies of Harley
Approximately twenty of us went on the
dinner ride on Saturday, October 16, to
Steakhouse 66 in Encinitas.
We left the
dealership in San Marcos and took a nice ride
through Harmony Grove, Elfin Forest and Rancho
Santa Fe Road to Encinitas.
The sky was
gorgeous with the sun right at the coastline
making the skyline a beautiful pink, dark clouds
above the sun, and then just a sliver of the moon
through the clouds. What a gorgeous evening
and a great ride. I think we all enjoyed our
dinners and certainly the camaraderie. All in all
it was a great evening.
We have some great events coming up in
November.
Sunday, November 7
We will enjoy a ride to and tour of the Helen
Woodward Center with lunch to follow at the
Del Dios Country Store. We will meet at Biggs
San Marcos at 9:00 a.m. and take a ride through
Rancho Santa Fe to Helen Woodward. Our tour
will begin at 10:30 a.m. and last until noon.
After that, we will ride over to the Del Dios
County Store for lunch. Hope you can join us for
this event. The Helen Woodward Center is a
very fascinating center with a lot of great
programs.

This will be our final
meeting of the year so I am planning a few
surprises for the group. Please come and join us
for a fun evening.
Wednesday, November 17
Bike Night in November will be one week
early due to Thanksgiving. It starts at 6:30 p.m.
at The Blvd, on San Marcos Blvd., in San Marcos.
Be sure to ride up on your Harley or wear a
Harley article of clothing to receive a raffle ticket
for the door prize drawing.

As of October 22, 2004, we have 602 members!
I want to say "Thank You" to all of you who have
renewed your membership for 2005. At the October
Meeting we had 70 members who renewed. You can
renew at any time between now and the end of
January 2005. Cost is $20 and you must sign a new
membership form. These are available online under
Forms or at either dealership. With so many members
it takes a little time to check all the paperwork, but it
is easier to do a little here and there before the crunch
comes in January.
I was asked last year why
everyone who went on the January 1 Brunch Ride had
to sign a waiver form, and it's because not everyone

everyone sign than to check everyone off the
membership list. We will have a new "member code" for the web in 2005,
and you will receive the code starting in January. If you have not renewed
your membership by January 31, 2005, you will be dropped from the
computer.
Remember, you have the November General Meeting on
November 12, 2004 to renew plus you can mail it to me at any time: Biggs
