PLANT POT FILTER - Details from a presentation by “Guppy Guru “ Derek Jordan © ☺Easy to make ☺More attractive than plastic box filters ☺Almost maintenance free ☺Easy to change ☺Make sizes to suit your tank ☺An undergravel filter in a bare bottom tank ☺Easy to make ☺Ideal for plant growing ☺Quitier than bubble filters ☺Costs less than £1 Clay Pot (4” in this case) Tools include: Plastic Plant pot Saucer Saw, 3mm Drill bit, 22mm Plastic pipe, Plastic Tye Scissors, Using scissors cut out the round centre piece, this is where the airlift pipe will fit. Save the disc you have cut out First drill the base of plant pot saucer Using scissors cut out the round centre piece The clay pot has a drainage hole that needs to be sealed, using the disc cut from the plant pot holder and Aquarium sealant cover the hole from the inside, turn Cut around the base using the plastic ridges as a guide, Cut the off-cut into 5 ½ inch bits. Use the sealant to glue these off-cuts into the base of the clay pot to form support for the filter insert. Filter base in place ready for airline lift pipe, plastic tye passed through hole drilled in airlift pipe to prevent airstone,if used, sitting on the bottom of the clay pot. Push the airlift pipe through base and use sealant to seal in place. The filters have been in use for over 12 months without the need to change, algae growth encouraged by the clay pots not only gives a more natural look but makes ideal grazing for the fish. COMMENTS / ADAPTIONS - by Derrick Clayton I made some filters with the insert Derek describes above but with my limited D. I. Y. skills I found it easier to use a small plastic plant pot cut to size, drilled and inverted. 21.5mm pipe and 20mm drill bit ment no sealant needed and cutting the airlift pipe at an angle I have not found the need to fit cable tyes—so far. I have used ceramic round the inverted pot before filling with fine gravel, using different size clay pots depending on tank size. Airlift pipe can be cut to any length but if cut to stand about 50cm (2”) above pot Java moss can be tied round with fishing line to hide.
