The industry has flourished wonderfully over the years. Another thing that had also flourished among a majority of Bangladeshi parents was the notion of how video games can be bad for you. As they say, a little knowledge can be dangerous, and for the sake of clarity, here are the merits of playing video games Improved hand eye coordination bigstock An evening full of games is not just meant for the kids. With pool, ping pong, darts and more, there are plenty of activities to keep all ages entertained. You may think your home has run out of space, but you can almost always rework it into a great game room with a little know-how from TMAG. Find a place Now, this part can be tough, maybe your parents want that extra room for storage, entertainment, etc. But in some cases it is possible to convert your own room into a cave but the ideal place would be an extra room. It could be a storage space or a bedroom that no one uses too frequently. Anywhere that is relaxing and away from the busy parts of the house (like the living room or kitchen) will work. Pick the right furniture Clear out all the furniture and start fresh and never try to make a game room around a bed. Even if you end up moving it back, you want to do this first so you know how you want to structure the room. Think about what you want out of your game room. Do you want to play video games? Do you want a place to play ping pong or pool? Furnish accordingly and make sure to have lots of empty room and don’t cramp yourself in or you will not enjoy the room to its full potential. Choosing the game If you are considering getting video games, the comfort doesn’t matter as much as the actual games. Make sure to get games that will satisfy a broad audience. Thrill seekers will love games like Call of Duty, Tekken or Halo whereas more casual gamers will enjoy Need for speed or Burnout. You want to have a variety so everyone will be happy. Also, make sure you like the games too, because it is YOUR game room. Have fun with it! Go crazy! Get accessories like posters for upcoming video games or movies. Lounge on bean bag, do what you want since you are only limited by your creativity. Tahsin Momin TM AG TU ESDAY, NOVE M B E R 1 2, 2013 Let’s take “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Super Mario,” classic video games, as examples. You play the spiky blue hedgehog or the red hatted plumber running non-stop in a two-dimensional world. Jumping to collect rings/coins/ mushrooms, avoid enemies, and hop over ledges, you are required to think fast and react with your hands simultaneously. Games like these help improve one’s reaction times to stimuli. Competitiveness Racing game titles such as “Need for Speed,” “Mario Kart,” and “Gran Turismo” instill the sense of competition among many. Playing these games and winning races unlock achievements that further fuel the competitive attitude, much like competitions in real life. Nurturing this attitude in young adolescents is important to their mental development and paves their path into adulthood. Improved focus Teens these days have the attention span of a gold fish, as the saying goes. Given the fast pace at which things happen these days, most find it very difficult to focus on any specific objective. What most parents don’t know is that many bigstock games help improve focus. The internet is full of puzzles and games that require you to focus on objectives –spot the differences, finding hidden objects, match three – to mention a few. Luckily for you though, you can look pretty as you play. A sweaty, smelly, and unhealthy tanned look is a thought of the past. Pick both your hobbies and have spectators (maybe even your cute coach), at your feet by following a few simple steps Who doesn’t like dressing up? To some, it is important to look good at all times, but what happens when you break a sweat, after playing a game of football. This week, TMAG tries to help you out with making the right decisions when you are off to burn a few calories on the field. Jersey The main advantage of wearing jerseys is its fabric. These are often made of synthetic fibres with insulating properties. You don’t sweat anymore for that very reason. Another plus point is that these tend to be quite stretchy and with winter coming, you may well use it as a warm, insulating undergarment. However, in a tropical country like ours, the use of such fabric during summer may not be a good idea. It would be wise to look for a jersey which has a breathable synthetic/ cotton blend. Trousers/ Shorts The choice of wearing either trousers or shorts depends upon the type of sport. If it is a game that involves frequent movement such as football or basketball, shorts allow you the flexibility to do so. Again, if the game is like cricket or golf, which are widely known as a gentleman’s sport, wearing trousers would be the wiser decision. Shoes Most sports have different shoes to serve different purposes on the pitch. For instance, in football, the boots used have “spikes” on the soles that firmly grip the ground while running and helps maintain balance. Whereas athletes use shoes that are very light in weight allowing them to be agilite. There are different shoes for basketball, tennis, cricket, golf, and so on. If you are not much into such sports but you like to play them occassionally, a wallet-friendly option would be to buy a pair of trainers which you could use for almost anything. It may not serve every small and detailed purpose, but it sure does support your feet. Baizid Haque Joarder TM AG TU ESDAY, NOVE M B E R 1 2, 2013 bigstock Basic skin: check Evaluate your skin - are you tan and if yes, is this your preference? Do you have oily skin or skin that tends to break out into acne at the slightest hint of dirt? Don’t kid yourself into believing the best of yourself. The best option for oil free skin that does not run into the sensitive category, is a tinted moisturiser. Most of these also contain sunscreen so for those who want to retain their original complexion, this one’s for you my friend. Toning: check For those who want to conceal pimple marks or acne, concealer is a must. For people blessed with clearer skin, you all can go for a feather light foundation. However, waterproof is the key word here. When you are playing, you’re wiping off sweat most of the time from your face. A waterproof foundation won’t melt down and make you look like something out of a horror movie. Don’t go for heavy liners that’ll smudge around your eyes and make you look like you were someone’s punching bag. Go easy on the eyes with either a simple kohl pencil inside the lids or just conceal the shadows. Follow it up by piling on some water proof mascara and you’re set. Pout: check This one’s easy as pie. Go for some tinted lip balm that won’t smudge and also keep your lips looking supple and moisturised. munira fidai tmag 5 Street FFPB Fantasy Football Players of Bangladesh (FFPB) Fantasy League Top 10 after Gameweek 10 RankTeamManager 1 Sesc17 Shadman Haque 2ENFORCERS FC Shakil Mahmud 3 League Legends Fauzul Chowdhury 4 Joga Bonito FC Al Mohaimen 5 Maira_La Sakib Hussain 6 Red Devil Fc Abrar Shahriar 7 Rakesh Challengers Rakesh Sinha 8 mclovin.. Refrain from splurging. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20) If you aren’t being all loving and giving, then you certainly shouldn’t expect the red carpet treatment. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20) The Deadly Duo Since the demise of the Celica and the MR2, Toyota hasn’t had a sports car in a while. This has been a real shame for a brand with a strong past in driver-focused cars. Recently, Toyota has become better known for its reliability with cars like Corolla and Camry. But there’s not been much to get excited about until now People may not take you seriously at times. It’s okay to brush it off, but if they start evaluating you in a certain way, then clear out their confusion. Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22) Not everyone has the same definition of priorities; that’s something you’ll be learning this week. Quit imposing. Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22) Hiding something from authority figures may have its perks now, but it will haunt you in the long run. Virgo (Aug 23- Sep 22) If you think you are organised, think again! People around you may beg to differ. Find out where you messed up. Libra (Sep 23- Oct 22) Toyota GT-86 is a car that stirred the soul and indeed the trousers of every petrol head in the land. For reasons that are extremely difficult to explain to normal human beings, petrol heads prefer oversteer. We like the front end to grip and the rear to be all loose. That means we prefer rear wheel drives, but rear drive cars such as Jags, Mercs and BMWs are complicated to make and that means they tend to be expensive. That brings us back to the GT-86, a rear wheel drive car that just costs £25,000. It gets better, the engine is a flat four boxer unit, which means the pistons go sideways. Meaning it can be mounted low down, hence resulting in a low centre of gravity and there is no turbo charger, so, there is no lag. Everything about the GT-86 is immediate and brilliant. And the best bit - Toyota has made sure the tail is as wiggly as possible. They use exactly the same sort of skinny tires that they use on a Prius and what that means is that the petrol head can enjoy some tail out action at low, non-frightening speeds. You might think its daft, fitting deliberately un-grippy tyres on a car. You might even think you would inevitably crash, but would you? Well, you would be wrong; you can drift this car while reading a book. Because of the thin tyres, it is obvious that the GT-86 was not designed to set new lap records around the Nurburgring and with the 197 horse-power 2.0 litre engine; it won’t win many drag races either. What it will do though is, put a massive smile on the face of every motor enthusiast in the world. It isn’t even stupid; it comes with cruise control, Bluetooth, and air conditioning as standard. There is a boot too, big enough to store things and at the back, a couple of seats. There are however a couple of problems. Firstly, it doesn’t particularly look interesting and secondly it has a deadly rival, the Subaru BRZ. Like the Toyota, it has a rear drive and a low mounted 2.0 litre boxer engine. Like the Toyota, it will do 0-100Km/h in 7.7 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 180Km/h and the similarities go further than that - they both cost the same, they have the same bodies and the same interiors with the same equipment. They are even built by the same people in the same factory. You might imagine that it’s quite hard to choose between them. Actually it isn’t. Tahsin Momin Bridge the gap between relatives with whom you’ve been estranged for ages. Bury the hatchet and move on. Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21) Break free from someone else’s ideals. You’ve got a life of your own; take charge and don’t even think about looking back. Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21) Being laid back works out for you, but it isn’t a bad thing to get some order in your life. If you are capable of doing so, why not give it a whirl this week? Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan19) A family member might refuse something you’ve asked for. Refrain from being persistent. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18) Great potentials should never go to waste; banking on others won’t take you far. Take the week to get your act together. Pisces (Feb 19-Mar20) People are not used to hearing a “no” from you. If it suffocates you, tell them so. You aren’t bound to cave in to their demands. There are so many clubs around the city and it’s increasing every day. Most of the pool clubs are situated in Dhanmondi and adjacent areas. Even popular gaming arcades such as Saad Musa City Center, Bashundhara City Gaming Complex, and Jamuna Future Park have also incorporated billiard in their line-up of games. Basically pool centres estimate the prices as per board/game format. For each board/game you have to pay Tk25-35. We have talked to some regular pool players regarding their interests in this game. Siam, an 18 year old boy tells TMAG: “I love to play pool when I get some free time. Generally, I come to the pool house and spend at least two hours playing games of Eight-Ball. I have been playing since 2010.” Some pool houses have snooker boards where you can play snooker as well. In Dhanmondi, there is Pool World, BBC (Bangladesh Billiard Center), Move n Shot, Hangout, Rack and Cue. NBA (Uttara) and All Community Club (Gulshan) are other known spots to play pool. Imtiaz Salim WILD RIDES If you were to say there’s nothing to do in Dhaka, you’d only be partially correct. We would like to take this opportunity to tell you that there’s much to do, maybe not at the city hub, but just on the outskirts of Dhaka. Just up North, about 45 minutes drive towards Ashulia is Fantasy Kingdom, probably the largest amusement park in Dhaka. One can never get bored of Fantasy Kingdom! It offers so much to children and adults alike with the likes of many fun and adventurous rides – like their Roller Coaster, Santa Maria Ship, The Spider and the most popular of all the Magic Carpet. If you and friends or family were planning on going, make sure to plan a whole day, because with so much to do, there’s only so little time. Fantasy Kingdom also has the largest and the most adventurous Water Park in Bangladesh – The Water Kingdom. Fantasy Kingdom may offer you adventure and thrill on dry land, Water Kingdom shall take you where it’s most fun. The water! It is a huge park that has some tremendous water slides all over the place with heights ranging up to 7 stories high. It may not sound like much, but it is. The park also has an entertaining Wave Pool where people can dance to music played by a well known DJ. What is even more extreme is the Go-Kart race track right adjacent to the Amusement park. “Extreme Racing” offers a variety of Go-Karts to be driven and raced around tracks. They have package deals for larger groups of people and trust us when we say this. It is all absolutely worth it. So don’t waste any more time and head towards Fantasy Kingdom! Q Zulyadain Islam B tmag HOT TOPIC 7 BEGIN ARCADE AMUSEMENT Who says you cannot have a fun time out with your family? Saad Musa City Center - Bangladesh’s very first “hyper market” as they put it, has the ultimate family recreation zone. Saad Musa City Center is a gigantic four story building in Kuril, Bishwa Road - a departmental store where you get everything (even cars apparently). But the main centre of attraction is the topmost floor, the gaming arcade, a place designed for all ages. Tossing balls, car racing, motorbike racing, shooting, mini-golf, air hockey, pinball, billiards, and what not, that too under one roof. It seems like your Friday morning just got better. All the games are coin-operated. The coins can be purchased at counters and one can get four coins for Tk100, 10 coins for Tk250, and 20 coins for Tk500. However for Tk1000, one can buy 80 coins. To make things better, there are prizes as well, ranging from cute toys to exciting gadgets like – Xbox, PSP, Playstation, Wii, iPhone 5, Galaxy S3, Nikon cameras etc. There is also a 3D movie theatre and a karaoke centre on the very same floor. And if that weren’t enough, there is a party centre and a food court to top it off. The party centre is perfect for kids’ parties and they even offer free birthday cakes. The food court has a mixed menu of pizza, chicken, burger, Mexican, Italian, and light snacks ranging between Tk100 to Tk500. When it comes to recreation and enjoyment, Saad Musa City Center definitely takes us a step further. It has something new and a very exciting experience to offer. Tahsin Momin TAKE A BREAK Since this week’s issue of TMAG is all about “work hard, play harder,” we thought it’d also help if we include this little piece about that silent third segment of that saying, “rest easy.” So while we’re focusing on all these games and activities, it’s also essential to power down for a bit and recharge and where better to go for a break than the newly opened fast food joint, The Break? Located on level 5 of Jamuna Future Park, inside the “Player’s Club,” a separate segment of the mall, The Break is the burger lover’s heaven. With murmurs of having the best burgers in town, The Break has definitely made quite the debut in the local food scene. With a mouth watering menu that includes several types of sandwiches, hot-dogs and of course, their best and most renowned treats, the Nawab and Picchi burgers; and recently added, the Ramen burger. As for the quality of their food people aren’t going around saying they have the best burgers for nothing. However, the prices are a bit steep when it comes to The Break. But hey, if you want something that good, might as well pay for it. Being located in the “Player’s Club” section of the mall, where you have an array of entertainment options such as as bowling, pool, snooker, and karaoke, The Break deserves a “must visit.” Azfar Rahman TM AG TU E SDAY, N OVE MB E R 1 2, 20 1 3 8 tmag written in the Stars RAW’s guide to survival Raw, is an academy that aims to train people through an adventure trip in order to school them in the necessary skills for survival. The initiative was taken by adventure enthusiasts, Tawhid Hossain, Sk Badruddin Omar, and Sahad Siddique. Saudia Afrin had a conversation with the trio about their line of work and future plans Diving into the current situation of most city dwellers, let’s think, apart from our daily work, what else do we do? Hang out with friends, go to concerts, or just stay at home. According to Siddique: “People The youth of today are greatly in need of mentors to show them a way to project the wild and primitive energy of that particular age. And this is where adventure can make magic happen. It could be the perfect way to get acquainted with the hidden power of one’s own psyche. That’s what RAW is trying to work on through their adventure programmes, to guide the youth in such a way that they will start to live within a conscious understanding of their true selves. – Sahad Siddique do not have much to do, to express their internal power.” Subsequently, this power is being used in activities such as racing with friends and playing really loud music at parties. He says: “Our main concern was using this power in a positive way. The plan has been brewing in their minds for over a year, and finally in 2012, Raw fired up the voyage to put down the benefits of adventures and outdoor activities in the minds of the young generation.“ Siddique said: “Survival is more psychological rather than going into the jungle or going trekking or building camp fires.” Helping people focus on their work is one of Raw’s prime objectives. It considers teaching individuals how to make shelters or create fires in about eight to ten different ways. Also, they teach people how to keep calm during moments of crises. Siddique says: “People confer their full concentration when a known thing is done a little differently. Hence, we try to make them focus on one particular entity without them getting easily distracted.” In a similar tone to Siddique, Omar shares an important note about survival science which raw pursues. “Flight or Fight” is a motto we believe in. You fight it out or take flight and leave. Besides teaching survival science, Raw strongly supports and promotes nature preservation. Siddique says: “We want to safeguard the beauty we feel and watch for the next generation. It is our responsibility to protect the environment. Therefore all of our actions should be to survive yet preserve our environment. ” Throughout the journey Raw, teaches people the things they learnt from their experiences, Omar says: “They Adventure can be the perfect way to discover that hardships, mistakes, and failures are a part of life. Ultimately, how we deal with our setbacks, mistakes, and failures greatly influences the outcome of a situation. Our experiences can either empower us to succeed or cause us to quit and give up. It teaches us to survive through many obstacles and it is the best way to realise the true potential we all carry within ourselves. Failure is in fact necessary for anyone that is willing to grow – SK Badruddin Omar are welcome to follow in our footsteps immediately, or make the most of it in the near future.” He also added: “Students who completed their O-levels or their first and second year of university, it’s time for them to become responsible. For juniors we hold a two day programme so they can knock out any pent-up anger.” Till now Raw has successfully completed four tours, and most took place in Bandarban and Sylhet. At the very beginning they received vast responses from the people. Moreover, they trained up to 15 people so far. Due to higher chances of dehydration during summer Raw didn’t plan any tours for nearly 2 to 4 months. However, to keep up on the physical fitness, Raw has had special programmes for basic physical drills 5 days a week for around 2 hours at their selected parks in Dhaka. The Raw team also shared their plans of introducing winter camps in Bangladesh. He missed his first meeting, his phone died and he couldn’t believe all that was happening today. But then again, Sharar’s mornings started with a litany of abuses to the world and how it always seemed to mess with him. Finally, he fought his way into a bus, almost falling as the bus zoomed with Sharar’s body dangling halfway outside the bus. Sweating and clamouring for space among the crowd of men, women, and their tattered baggage, he held onto the suspended safety bars to keep him from falling. He saw a frail old man sitting with a basket of vegetables on his lap trying to balance it all, while he waited for the next stop. As soon as he stood up to get down, Sharar took his seat and felt a sense of relief as he sat on the spongy, dirty seat of the bus. The bus conductor asked the woman next to him for the fare. She groped through her bag looking for a ten taka note while the conductor waited impatiently. She took out a five taka note and looked hopelessly at the conductor’s face. Sharar noticed this and pulled out a 100 taka note and paid for the lady and himself. She smiled at him and thanked him generously. Sharar was taken aback by her sweetness. As he neared the office, more and more people got into the bus. A blind beggar with his son got up on the bus and no one paid them any attention. As he took out a few coins and handed it to the young boy, the twinkle in his eyes pulled at his heart. For a moment he forgot about the never-ending heat, the screaming bus conductors, and the crowds of people that pushed their way in and out. As Sharar finally reached his destination, he walked into his office. Done with his day’s work, he left his office and saw his chauffeur waiting near his Lexus Harrier. As he connected his iPhone to the charger and felt the cool breeze from the AC, he closed his eyes and started counting his blessings. Natasha Rahman Lady’s got a gun The other day while playing Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, I noticed an opponent named “feminine justice.” I’m a girl so seeing that name really made me smile with pride. Few minutes into this 24-player death match I see her dominating by 40 kills comic book book A touch of humility and 2 deaths. After the game was over I just couldn’t wait but to message her and ask whether she was really a girl or not and of course how old she was. After a few minutes of conversation I find out that she is a 21-year-old girl, just like me, and is amazing with her sniping skills as well as her knifing skills. I even checked to see if she is wall hacking or not but she was all clean, what a pride booster for female gamers. A lot of people have trouble exploring, let alone accepting the idea of a female interested in video games and actually being good at it. And when they do, they imagine them to be bootylicious babes sitting in front of their consoles naked. So sorry to burst that bubble, guys, but girls look as normal as any boy looks and probably are better than them. I said it girls are better at gaming than boys. Maybe this is just my feminist side kicking in but I really believe that natural, physical gender is not really a factor here. Though males are considered to be more aggressive and have better reflexes, doesn’t this have more to do with gender norms and stereotypes than anything else? Girls are given baby dolls; boys are given baseball bats. Girls are urged to be more patient and nurturing while boys are allowed to fight and argue. In the end, males don’t have a natural advantage here; society gives them one or at least tries to. “Tries to” is the key part here because the generalisation that boys are better at video games is just like any other gender stereotype that you’ve heard before. More and more of the researches conducted today, such as Pixoo, reveal that today’s gamers include as many girls if not more as boys. And that they are good at it! His work such as Sandman, Stardust & American Gods is so iconic that it is with great excitement that we jump into Marvel 1602. Marvel 1602 is a reimagination of the Marvel characters and settings you are familiar with, taking the likes of SpiderMan and The Fantastic Four and placing them in victorian England in the year 1602 as the title suggests. The beauty lies in the joys you derive from it’s surprising subtlety; superhero stories in general always tend to be overblown and packed with action and colourful tights. But Gaiman refrains from taking the stereotypical route and instead pens a compelling tale where more than half the joy you derive comes from identifying the Victorian alter-egos of the present day characters. The assortment of tales are varied and interesting, The X-Men are collectively dubbed “Witchbreed” whereas another story sees Nick Fury (Sir Nicholas) carrying out Queen Elizabeth’s bidding and investigating The Knights Of Templar while there’s also a young orphan named Peter Parquagh with a fascination for spiders. Is there a need for it all to be familiar with Marvel tales? Yes but Gaiman’s crisp dialogue and beautiful craftsmanship shines through and allows everyone to get absorbed into the story. The subtlety of the artwork and the story is beautiful as Gaiman intricately weaves several stories that are all interconnected. But while the build-up is beautiful, the ending might feel like a bit of a let-down none the less, this remains an excellent collector’s item. A perfect read on a peaceful day where you can sit back and enjoy a truly imaginative journey. Homecoming With sports-themed, it’s harder to do the heartwarming, triumph-of-the-underdog thing than it is for movies. Once in a while, though, in the hands of a veteran pulp fiction author like John Grisham, even something like American football, whose fan base is mostly limited to the US, can be a story everyone would enjoy. The skinny A former football coach is dying, and his old students have returned to their hometown of Messina to hold a vigil at his deathbed. While the old maestro slowly slips towards oblivion, the boys - all grown men now rehash old Coach Rake stories; the matches, the arguments, and the brutal training sessions. Among them is Neely Crenshaw, an ex football icon, whose illustrious career ended with a knee injury. Other characters, some his peers, others his predecessors also talk about their lives, and the way in which Coach Rake touched them all. Why it’s worth a read The beauty of the book lies in its simplicity. There’s no thrill, no suspense, just a steady stream of nostalgia and reflection, peopled by very real and believable characters who are bound together by their common love for the game. If you’re tired of adrenaline-pumping actionpacked plots, this is the perfect book to help you unwind. The language is littered with baseball metaphors, “touching base,” “hitting it out of the park,” and many other NSFW rite-ofpassage terms. Moneyball is a sports drama starring Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill. This one is a winner. The screenplay is based on the real life story of sport manager Billy Beane. The real Mr Beane isn’t quite as photogenic as Brad Pitt, but the choice is justified. Billy Beane’s team, the Oakland Athletics, is losing a lot. They don’t have enough money. The game is all about the money, after all. Billy hires math geek Peter Brand played by Jonah Hill who says it’s not really about the money, is about the math. Peter breaks it all down like a statistician and gives Billy the straight dope on what it is that Oakland needs to win. Spoiler ahead: things turn out well. As if you didn’t see that coming. This story is an old one; it’s the heartwarming underdog story with some grade A acting and some tight editing. Moneyball doesn’t get too much into the actual mechanics of the game. There are many other baseball movies that do that better. The screenplay is by two of most egotistical wordsmiths in all of Hollywood. Steven Zailian and Aaron Sorkin make sure the dialogue keeps on cracking faster than the speed of thought, and the chemistry between Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill does it justice. While not a masterpiece, Moneyball is a nice little treatment of a familiar genre. If you obsess over sports statistics, you should see it. If you don’t understand baseball, you’ll still be able to understand what’s going on. Give it a shot.
