Dave, along with a handful of his colleagues + KV riders set off at 7am from Edlington Fire Station, visiting every fire station in South Yorkshire, covering a total of 160 miles. The purpose of the ride was to raise money for two charities - The Fire Fighters charity who support injured fire fighters and their families; and Men Utd, a prostate cancer charity in memory of Dave’s colleague who passed away last year after suffering from prostate cancer. The funds raised will be evenly split between the two charities. #orangearmy You can still sponsor Dave by visiting his Just Giving page at: www.JustGiving.com/David-Newton1736 KNOTTINGLEY VELO | Issue 7 3 Terry’s Sunday Mystery Tour Ride #OrangeArmy on tour As the name suggests it’s a mystery ride, and to be fair until I roll up at the shop most times I don’t have a clue where I am going to take the group - it really depends who turns up and what the weather is like. I was torn between doing a ride over to the West but didn’t fancy the headwind, so went for North with a bit of East thrown in for good measure - it’s also easier to control a group of mixed abilities when it’s a flatter ride (and there are no Pea Royd Lane hills to tackle going West!) It was a fairly decent turn out for the ride with a group of 12. The pace was managed well to suit the group, finishing with an overall average of 17mph. There was a mixture of A roads and B roads and a jaunt on the cycle path, not to mention a closed road - every cyclists dream! The route worked pretty well, besides the unexpected dash to the café being undertaken by some of the sheltered riders, some would also say shadier riders! The Route went through Fairburn, over towards Taddy, then towards Cawood, drawing people to assume I was going to head to either York or Naburn; that’s when I decided to turn do the cycle path to totally throw them all off the scent (a little off road work to get to the cycle path). We then dropped into Selby through Riccal, headed to Carlton, following the old familiar road all the way back into the head wind to Birkin (which you can’t go wrong with), stopping at Birkin for a well-deserved bite to eat and a brew! The Mystery routes are open to all club members and the pace and route is determined by who turns up and there is always a café stop so why not come along to the next one, see if we can find some decent new roads (other words just try to get lost) and have a good laugh. Words by Terry Harrison KNOTTINGLEY VELO | Issue 7 4 Wednesday Night Club Rides #EveningClubRides The steady midweek club ride over the last few weeks has become very popular with many members of varying abilities getting out. The most impressive of these had to be split into two groups as over 25 turned up. The ride in general is going very well lasting around 2 hours with different people offering routes that cater for the group depending on who turns up. The average speeds are also dependent on who comes along with a ‘don’t drop anyone policy’ usually between 15mph and 17mph. This year we have been rotating round now that members have a better idea of speed control so it has become a ‘chatty’ ride with a new rider beside you every few minutes. Now the weather has finally got here I hope to see this ride continue and be well attended, we could even put in a quick pub stop if anyone fancies it while we have the good conditions in the evenings, so not to put a damper on things get yourselves out over the next few weeks as we will be wrapped up and fitting the lights back on our bikes before you know it Words by Doug Akeroyd If you want to put forward a particular route for Wednesdays then shout up, post in the Facebook group or mention to one of the regular riders, bearing in mind to avoid main roads as much as possible, big hills, and that riders want to be home not too late for tea. Chain Gang for All The ‘Chain Gang 4 All’ seemed a success with well over 30 members turning out to a fine summer evening. Everyone was split into 3 groups all working at about the same pace to give everyone the chance to experience a chain gang. I think and hope that most got something out of it. I think everyone averaged 20+ mph. This is the sort of back-marker pace on our gang so nobody has any excuse on pace. I’m not sure what puts people off doing the regular chain because everyone that was out is good enough. Must admit the weather was good to us. We are now past the middle of summer so let’s make most of what’s left Words by Wayne Lancaster KNOTTINGLEY VELO | Issue 7 5 Knottingley Velo Road Race We have the upcoming Knottingley Velo Road Race on 13th September at Pollington – why not come and show your support to the racers and cheer on the Orange Army? For anyone who is able to help out on the morning of the race, it would be greatly appreciated. Wayne has a list of duties that need filling on the day and will provide more details shortly. If you are able to help our, or would like more information, please contact Wayne Lancaster Tour De France BBQ Don’t forget the last day of the Tour can be watched with fellow club members with a few drinks and a BBQ. The event will take place at Knottingley Rugby Club £5 adults and £3 kids. Please contact Wayne Lancaster for more information. KNOTTINGLEY VELO | Issue 7 Pontefract Road Race th Sunday 7 June saw the Pontefract Grand Prix cycling event, racing through Pontefract town centre on a closed road circuit. The event saw various caterogies race throughout the day including: Under 12s Under 14s Under 16s Mens 234 Mens Elite Peter Williams of One Pro Cycling won the Mens Elite race whilst Tom Piddock of Polypipe Cycling Team won both the U16s and 234 category events. There were plenty of spectators from the club to support our boys in orange on the racing circuit, and certainly great weather for it! 6 KNOTTINGLEY VELO | Issue 7 London to Amsterdam Challenge Knottingley Velo member Andy Mason cycled from London to Amsterdam to raise money for Prostate Cancer, clocking up 142.7miles and 3,500ft of climbing over 2 days. Well done, Andy! If you would like to sponsor Andy for his epic ride, then please use the below link to his Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/andrew-mason8 7 KNOTTINGLEY VELO | Issue 7 8 Members’ Corner Out on the Bike with…. Darren Wan Occupation: Programmer Currently riding? Planet X Pro Carbon If you could have any bike what would it be? It may be modest to some, but I like the Canyon Aeroad, I've yet to read a bad review and unlike some bikes, it might be within my reach without my partner leaving me. Toughest Cycle: I did a 200km Audax from Tamworth to Grantham in torrential rain and 40mph driving wind a few months ago. The first half was great with a strong tailwind, but the return leg was like cycling 60miles in a wind tunnel. Longest Ride: I've done a few 200km rides now and I think the longest was from the Eureka Cafe over near Chester. I think in all I managed 130miles that day. Favourite cycle ride? My first Audax, the Red Rose ride. Starting at Halifax, over the Trough of Bowland to Morcambe and back. Tough and hilly, but great sense of achievement! You're welcome to join me next year when I hope to do it again. How many years cycling? I've always cycled but like many just pootling about. I used to occasionally cycle to Leeds, but that was all, it's only in the last year that I've got a road bike and started putting in the miles. Favourite pro rider? Peter Sagan, I think he's got so much potential, maybe one day he'll get the grand tour win he deserves. Best achievement on the bike to date? Being first riders back on the Lincolnshire Cross Audax. Best achievement off the bike to date? My other love is climbing and topping out on my first E1 (Padder at Eastby) was great. Maybe one day I'll be brave enough to lead it. Any cycling goals? Right now, just get lighter and quicker. Hopefully one day enter a Time Trial if I'm quick enough. What made you join KVelo? I was tired of long rides on my own and a few people on long rides had recommended I join a club as I could learn a lot from riding with a club. KNOTTINGLEY VELO | Issue 7 Anita Marner Occupation: School Business Administrator Currently riding? Planet X Nanolight If you could have any bike what would it be? Top of the range Specialized S-Works whichever that one is! Toughest Cycle: Honister Pass-Lake District Longest Ride: 105 miles - Humber Bridge with a few detours Favourite cycle ride? Anywhere in the North Lakes! Though I really do enjoy the Humber Bridge route How many years cycling? About 20 years! Started Mountain biking about 20 years ago and then got a road bike about 8 years ago. Favourite pro rider? Mark Cavendish Best achievement on the bike to date? Getting over Honister Pass without a stop or gaining 1st place (Novice) in Hatfield Triathlon 10 years ago! Best achievement off the bike to date? Gaining diploma in Piano or climbing Scafel Pike! Any cycling goals? To just carry on enjoying the bike and maybe pluck up courage to do the chain gang again, or maybe enter another duathlon. What made you join KVelo? Have the opportunity the ride with a group sometimes and meet nice people with the same interest! We may randomly select you to take part in our ‘Out on the Bike with….’ Member’s corner to help you get to know our members better! Thanks to Darren & Anita for taking part this month! 9 KNOTTINGLEY VELO | Issue 7 10 Upcoming KVelo Adventures Mountain Biking in Wales: 18th, 19th + 20th September Mountain Biking Weekend in Wales 18th, 19th & 20th September 2015 KVelo are going Mountain Biking to Snowdonia, Wales in September.
