Sheri English—Sales Director, Old Kinderhook Realty, LLC
Where are you from? I was born and lived in North Carolina my entire life until my husband’s job transfer brought us to
Missouri in 1994.
Tell us about your family: My husband is Bret English. After taking early retirement from the corporate world last year,
he currently works for Four Winds Realty, dealing predominately with the condominium market. Bret and I have a
daughter, Andrea McCormack. She and her husband, Dave, live in Greensboro, NC and have two sons. We also have a
son, Jon English. He and his wife, Janet, live in Sanford, NC and have three sons.
What brought you to the Lake of the Ozarks? We moved to the Lake of the Ozarks in June of 1994 as a cross
country job relocation. When we bought our home on the Lake, the land that Old Kinderhook sits on was just a private
ranch. I have watched it grow from being merely plans on paper to the beautiful community that it is today. Being a close
neighbor, I have always had a fondness for it. Over the years, I have listed and sold a variety of properties in Old
Kinderhook. When I saw the position of Sales Director was opening up, I quickly decided that I wanted to be a real part of
the Old Kinderhook team.
How long have you been in the Real Estate business? I have been in the real estate business at the Lake of the
Ozarks for 15 years. I began my real estate career with a franchised company, where I remained for 5 years. Bret and I
then became co-owners of Four Winds Realty in October of 2000.
Hobbies? I am the Director of Music at Camdenton United Methodist Church where I have served for 15 years.
Obviously, music is a love of mine! In addition to music, I enjoy gardening (trying to make things grow in this rocky Missouri
soil!) I also enjoy photography and traveling, especially back to the Atlantic beaches where I spent so much time growing up.
What is your little known fact? I have spent time exploring the pyramids and tombs of Egypt, and hours riding camels in the
desert!
An update from Rusty Fuller, Course Superintendent
The putting greens at Old Kinderhook are A4 bentgrass. This grass was selected by turfgrass breeder Dr. Joe Duich at Penn State University. The A4 was
selected from old Penn Cross putting greens in Georgia. A4 has a 25% greater shoot density than Penn Cross putting greens. A4 ranks very high in the
National Turfgrass Evaluation Program with fine leaf texture, uniform surfaces and high quality.
We did a core aerification in March to physically remove organic matter from the upper rootzone of the greens. Large amounts of organic matter can form in
the upper rootzone of bentgrass putting greens. Bentgrass can grow in soil temperature in the 30’s but soil microbes are inactive below the mid 50’s soil
temperature. Which means soil microbes can’t break down organic matter in the root zone as bentgrass grows at low temperatures. A-4 is a high density and
heat tolerant bentgrass that tends to produce higher amounts of organic matter (thatch).
In the transition zone, the key to keeping bentgrass alive is water management, air movement and shade on the greens. The roots of the plants need oxygen
just as humans do. The more air space we leave in the root zone the healthier the plants will be. Oxygen is necessary for the plant to carry out respiration,
which is the conversion of stored food to energy. Respiration takes place in the roots and therefore, oxygen is vital to plant survival.
Dr. Patrick O’ Brien, the SE director of the USGA Green, section says it is similar to cholesterol levels increasing in the human body and plugging up the
arteries that carry oxygen to the heart. Oxygen is also vital to the survival of the turf root and without adequate pore space in the root zone due to excess
organic matter, summer turfgrass decline will occur.
Our core aerification was done with ½ tines with 1.5” spacing which pulled out 8.73% of the green. We also used verticutters in 2 directions with 7/64th inch
blades. These did not go as deep as the Graden Verticutters. This puts Old Kinderhook at around 9%-10% material removed from the greens. Chris
Hartwiger and Patrick O’Brien from the USGA, said in a 2001 article on mature golf courses that have been on successful core aerification programs, have
removed 15% to 20% of the greens yearly.
Soil testing has been done here since 2002 by an International Sports Turf Research Center. These results show an increase in water holding, water porosity
and organic content in the upper 1” of the root zone. The infiltration rate has slowed over the last 7 years which mean the greens hold more water. There
was no fall aerification done in 2009 due to the weather. I will do everything I can do to make the playing surfaces great for the players at Old Kinderhook.
We will use all non disruptive cultural practice to increase oxygen levels in the root zone until this fall. Thank you for your patience during this process.

On April 11th, Old Kinderhook
was host to the Lake of the
Ozarks Corvette Club monthly
outing. The event drew 47
Corvettes and quite a few car
enthusiasts.
Our very own Ken Rewerts was
instrumental in bringing his club
to Old Kinderhook for a good
meal and a great time.
The dam repairs to our spillway
which collapsed last fall with the
excessive rainfall, are nearly
complete. The new dam features
two concrete overflows for the
pond which should allow it to
remain effective for many many
years to come.
Next time you are out on the
course, check it out...it is really
something!!
