The Boots Badges and Bandages competition is a great way for the Blood Center to partner with our local heroes, and to thank them for the leadership they demonstrate every day in our community,” Tinney notes that a single car accident victim can require as many as 50 pints of blood, while premature infants often receive blood transfusions during their stay in a neonatal intensive care unit. Cancer patients, meanwhile, are the largest user group of blood products, as they often require red cell and platelet transfusions during their course of chemotherapy treatment. The public is invited to support the friendly competition by donating in honor of their favorite hero. Each organization has partnered with MKBC to recruit donors and raise awareness of the importance of blood donation. Individuals can donate at any MKBC donor center or community blood drive between May 26 and September 1, and have their donation go towards their favorite first responder: Fire (Boots) Sponsor Code 7417 – Police (Badges) Sponsor Code 7416 – EMS (Bandages) Sponsor Code 7418. Individual blood drives will have their own code. A continuous blood supply is essential to the health and welfare of our community. Sharing your good health by donating blood provides a gift to the recipient – the opportunity for extended life. Is there anything more special than a chance for tomorrow? Thank you to all of the volunteers who attended our Lehigh Valley recognition event. #6 Volunteers Honored for their Hours of Service KEVIN BITZ, 50 Gallons EXCUSE “I DON’T HAVE ANY SPARE BLOOD TO DONATE.” Blood makes up about seven percent (7%) of your body’s weight, and the average adult has approximately two (2) pints of blood for every 25 pounds of body weight. The body is constantly manufacturing blood, so after your whole blood donation, you will not be eligible to donate for 56 days, during which time your body will completely replenish the blood you have so generously donated. The Blood Center recently honored its volunteers with special recognition events held in Allentown and Leesport. The Blood Center’s very own Easter Bunny, also known as David Chandler! 13 COMMUNITYCALENDAR J U LY L E H IG H VAL L EY 1 Plainfield Twp Volunteer Fire Company 2 DeSales University 3 Plainfield Twp Volunteer Fire Company 5 Porter Lodge SteelStacks 6 Heidelberg Union Church 7 Hokendauqua American Legion 8 Susquehanna Bank Blue Mountain Dr 9 PPL 9th Street Tom Ring’s Brown Daub Kia 10 Plainfield Twp Volunteer Fire Company PPL 9th Street 13 Nativity Lutheran Church Grace Evangelical Lutheran Nazareth 15 Plainfield Twp Volunteer Fire Company Mt Bethel Volunteer Fire Company Travel Impressions One Windsor Plaza 16 Good Shepherd UCC Slatington Mutual of Omaha Bethlehem 17 Plainfield Twp Volunteer Fire Company 18 CHS Valley Center Parkway Susquehanna Bank Main St 19 Coca-Cola Park Lehigh Valley Rollergirls 20 Our Lady of Perpetual Help St. Paul’s Catholic Church Allentown Beth El Gibor 21 Huff’s Union Church 22 Berkheimer Outsourcing Merchants Bank Braden Rd 23 Coordinated Health Winchester Rd FlexLink 24 Plainfield Twp Volunteer Fire Company 25 Viamedia Phoebe Services Pharmacy 26 Strohl Automotive Services Union UCC Church Grove Neffs Emmanuel UCC Allentown 29 Plainfield Twp Volunteer Fire Company Barry Isett & Associates 31 Plainfield Twp Volunteer Fire Company B E RKS CO U NT Y 1 2 3 5 8 11 12 13 14 15 14 14 Subway Douglassville National Penn Bank Boyertown Cornerstone Plaza Governor Mifflin High School Burkholder’s Farm Market Appalachian Campsites Harmony United Methodist Morgantown Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences Lowe’s Sinking Spring Lowe’s Hamburg American Legion Post 537 Morgantown Spine & Wellness Center AW Golden / Rt #61 Car & Bike Show Rita’s Ice Boyertown Crowne Plaza Reading Salvation Army Boyertown 16 17 18 19 20 23 24 25 26 30 31 Daniel Boone Middle School Mountain View Chapel Lords & Ladies St. Joseph Medical Center Fleetwood Carnival St. Paul’s UCC Robesonia Cloister Car Wash Open Bible Baptist Reading St. Mary’s Catholic Church Hamburg Cloister Car Wash Boscov’s Perkiomen Avenue Birdsboro Pharmacy St. Paul’s UCC Birdsboro Reading Fightin’ Phils St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Mertztown St. John’s Lutheran Birdsboro Mohrsville Church of the Brethren Madison Apartment Group Wyomissing Sovereign Penn Bank Penn St. Reading Hospital for Post-Acute Rehab BUCKS/ MON TGOMERY CHESTER/ PHI LAD ELPHI A 1 5 6 7 11 12 13 14 15 18 19 21 22 26 29 Grace Lutheran Royersford XPO Business Equipment French Creek State Park Bruster’s Ice Cream Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Quakertown New Hanover Lutheran Gilbertsville St John’s Evangelical Lutheran Spinnerstown Warwick Woods Campground Parkerford Church Saint Luke’s Lutheran Church St James UCC Limerick Pottstown Seventh Day Adventists Upper Bucks YMCA Quakertown Brownback’s UCC Pottstown Borough Lowe’s Morgantown St. Paul’s UCC Pottstown Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Quakertown Brunner Insurance US Axle St. Aloysius Catholic Church Pottstown Henrietta Hankin Branch/Chester County Library Phoenixville Hospital Pottstown Medical Specialists Salford Mennonite Church CARBON / MON ROE SCHUYLKI LL/ LUZERN E 1 2 5 7 9 10 11 14 16 17 Penn Forest Twp Volunteer Fire Co. #1 Western Pocono Community Library Fairlaine Village Mall Polk Township Volunteer Fire Company Western Pocono Community Library Barger Lodge #325 Stroudsburg Schuylkill Medical Center – South Hazle Township Commons Seton Manor Western Pocono Community Library Blue Mtn-Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital 18 Hazle Township Commons 23 25 26 30 Western Pocono Community Library Lehigh Valley Health Net-Hazleton Hazle Township Commons Penn Forest Twp Volunteer Fire Co. #2 Western Pocono Community Library N EW JERSEY 12 St. Jude’s Catholic Church Blairstown 27 St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Washington AUGUST LEHI GH VALLEY 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 19 20 21 22 24 25 26 27 28 Aharts Market Bath Neward Farms Corn Shed St. John’s Lutheran Bath Notre Dame of Bethlehem St. Anne’s Church/School Bethlehem Marblehead Chowder House Lone Lane Park Allentown Hanover Township Community Center People First Credit Union Allentown Lehigh Valley Home Care/Hospice Plainfield Twp Volunteer Fire Company Family YMCA of Easton Coordinated Health – Highland Avenue VIA of the Lehigh Valley Hope UCC Wind Gap St. Joseph the Worker Parish Orefield Saucon Valley Country Club Plainfield Twp Volunteer Fire Company Bethel Bible Fellowship Emmaus People First Credit Union Nazareth Nazareth Ford Lehigh Valley Health Network – I-78 Computer Aid ABEC, Inc.
