It makes very high demands on quality and is permanently in flux. The European carmakers are constantly on the lookout for new, even better solutions. Suppliers who share this passion to innovate with their processes and products have a clear advantage on the market. Just like ArcelorMittal in Duisburg. technologies and processes. As the plant is set up in a densely populated area, special attention was paid to noise control. LAYOUT OF THE PLANT IN DUISBURGRUHRORT AND CORE COMPONENTS THE WORLD’S MOST MODERN WIRE ROD MILL In spring 2012, ArcelorMittal will be commissioning a completely new wire rod mill in Duisburg-Ruhrort that can produce 690,000 tonnes of wire rod per year with just one strand. The mill will replace the 50 year old plant in DuisburgHochfeld and is the world‘s most modern wire rod mill. It has been designed to roll technically demanding wire rod grades, which are therefore of extremely high quality, to the closest of tolerances. The new mill also sets standards with respect to sustainability with particularly energy-efficient 8 7 THE BENEFITS AT A GLANCE Outstanding surface quality and microstructure properties of the products High flexibility so that even small lot sizes can be produced cost-efficiently High productivity Low operating costs 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Furnace HL stands CL stands Cooling and equalizing loop MEERdrive® block MEERdrive® PLUS Block LCC® with 3-fan technology Coil handling facilities 6 TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHTS Top quality right down the line ArcelorMittal’s new mill from SMS Meer allows temperature-controlled rolling of wire rod in the whole size range from 5.5 mm to 25.0 mm – and that at a maximum rolling speed of up to 120 m/s. The company thus has a leading position as supplier of rolled wire rod for automotive engineering, machine engineering, offshore technology, plants for renewable energies and connecting elements. 6+4 WIRE ROD BLOCK CONFIGURATION: TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED ROLLING The finishing block is divided into two parts: A 6-stand and a 4-stand finishing block. Intermediate cooling guarantees that the wire rod has a temperature of up to 750°C before it enters the 4-stand finishing block. The loop technology from SMS Meer thereby ensures a homogeneous cross-section temperature with a very low temperature coefficient. That makes thermomechanical rolling possible for all wire rod sizes. The optimum system parameters are simulated offline with the CCT® process model and controlled online during rolling. MEERDRIVE®: CONTINUOUS SAVING AND OPTIMISATION Both wire rod blocks are equipped with the innovative MEERdrive® individual drive technology in which each roll ring pair is driven by a dedicated motor. That reduces maintenance and the operating costs of the high-speed section by around 30%. Furthermore, MEERdrive® enables greater flexibility in the pass sizing. Depending on the demands on the process or the steel grade, different cross-sectional reductions can be rolled. The sizing and the reduction ratios can be adapted individually at any time, even long after commissioning, e.g. in order to allow new materials to be rolled in future. With the conventional mill block that is not possible. The rolling speed and tension can also be individually controlled and optimized with MEERdrive®. 5 4 LCC®: SELECTIVE SETTING OF MATERIAL PROPERTIES In order to selectively achieve the desired material properties with different steel grades, ArcelorMittal takes a number of factors into consideration during the rolling process such as rolling temperature, cooling settings, equalizing loops and transport speed on the loop cooling conveyor LCC®. The LCC® located at the end of the rolling line is furthermore equipped with the modern 3-fan technology: Three individually controlled fans per transport segment supply the optimum amount of air to the windings. During “forced cooling”, the covers of the LCC® are open and up to 30 fans operate at full power to set the desired material properties. The material cools as quickly as possible and a fine laminar pearlitic microstructure is formed. 3 2 1 SMS MEER GMBH Business Unit Long Products Plants Ohlerkirchweg 66 41069 Mönchengladbach Phone: +49 2161 350-1724 Fax: +49 2161 350-1753 wirerodandbarmills@sms-meer.com www.sms-meer.com The information provided in this brochure contains a general description of the performance characteristics of the products concerned.
