Teyonna Allen, 28: “Performing Stars not only taught me how to have a lot of selfconfidence, but to care about others as well. It has inspired me to treat young ladies with the same respect that I was given and if need be, mentor them and help them to become beautiful young women just as I was taught to be…and how to be a better person.” She graduated from Intelli Tec College in Grand Junction, Colorado, and is working as a quality assurance specialist for AT&T. After obtaining her A.A. in Culinary Arts from Santa Rosa Junior College as well as a certificate in Baking and Pastry, Kaleybra placed her own 2 children in some of the same programs. Coleen believes she uses the respect for others and the focus and devotion she learned from Performing Stars whenever she starts a new project or activity. “I remember receiving my Performing Stars of Marin recognition rewards in front of my friends and feeling so proud to be a part of this organization. I still have my rewards hanging on my wall. Thank you for all those memories.” Alexzandria Douglas, 22, was with Performing Stars from age 3 to 13, during which time she participated in ballet, modern dance, theater, hip hop, baton twirling, music programs and field trips. Not only did Alexzandria gain skills in music and dance, but her grades improved a lot because of the confidence and self-esteem she gained, which also helped her learn to get along with other people. She has utilized these skills to complete an A.A. degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences from Santa Rosa Junior College and gain part-time employment as a receptionist. Garland Duhe, 24, is a Marin City Recreation Director. She loves to sing and passes down to her daughter what she learned in Performing Stars. “It builds character and creates structure for youth that may otherwise be looking to false role models. There should be more programs like this…” Jania Fusilier, 35, remembers that the performance arts were a complete outlet for her physically and that the combination of music, movement and fashion helped her find her inner artist and kept her out of trouble. As a pre-school teacher and a mother of five, she continually models the skills she cultivated while with Performing Stars - creative thinking, cooperation, tact, and speaking clearly. Jania wishes there had been more programs for older youth so she could have continued her participation and hopes 06 such programs can still be created. He says the sailing classes helped him the most as he got to explore the bay and gain new knowledge about his surroundings. “Performing Stars is unlike any other. When you're with a group of wonderful people all having the same desires and goals, that’s what Performing Stars is all about. Not just learning how to shine but learning how to shine with others and sharing that light.” D’George Hines, 25, is the founder of DH Production Crew, a youth music ministry and booking agency for various gospel artists. We performed our recital on stage in front of a large audience, and it gave me confidence at a young age to never be scared to showcase my talent! I still have that confidence to perform or talk in front of large groups and to shine!” Khari Horton-Haynes, 20, is attending San Francisco State University majoring in Kineseology with a Theater Arts minor. Performing Stars taught Khari “to step out of my box of ignorance to a world of enlightenment and opportunities.” Khari has been acting since the age of five, when he attended the Marin Theater Company on a full scholarship and landed lead roles during the summer camps. A natural actor who could capture any audience, he also had the dedication to give his best even to minor roles. He is a very versatile young gentleman with lots of genuine charm: at Redwood High, he played football and still performed in the school plays; he's a member of the Marin City boxing club; he volunteers to help seniors and he mentors younger children. Domenika Johnson, 33, joined Performing Stars at age 11. She had known about the organization since she first moved to Marin City at 9. She has vivid memories of the decorated yard in front of the office and of Felecia engaging with the children, passing out popsicles and other treats and greeting 07 what a few of our alumni have to say (6) each child personally. Domenika felt a part of her new community and all the children felt recognized and important. She participated in hip-hop and baton twirling. Both programs boosted her confidence, forced her to develop discipline and provided her with a positive after-school structure. Being taken to her first film festival and performing at the Jewish Community Center were significant to Domenika as her first multicultural and art world experiences, and ones she may not have ever had, were it not for Felecia. It is the life-long friendships with other girls in Performing Stars and the “sisterhood” fostered during that time that is most memorable for Domenika. She hopes Performing Stars remains and flourishes so that many more children can be reached each year, offering them all of the benefits she was blessed with. Shaun Joseph, “I'm very thankful to have had Felecia Gaston and Performing Stars in my upbringing. And even though everything never goes as planned we still have to fight for what we're trying to achieve. Performing stars showed us valuable things early and if we were in a shell the program pulled us out of that mindstate and gave us confidence and something to believe in other than the bad things we saw on a daily basis.” Jessie Land, 22, received her Cultural Anthropology degree at the University of Redlands. Jessie credits the performing arts and music programs of Performing Stars as the reason many opportunities opened up for her, including roles with the Marin Theatre Company and singing for Carlos Santana at a fundraiser sponsored by Samsung Foundation and The Milagro Foundation. Elice Miggins, 23, is a full-time Lifestyle Consultant at Massage Heights in Novato; she learned patience from Performing Stars. She is already thinking about enrolling her two-year-old daughter, who loves to dance. Tashell Mitchell was active in Performing Stars from age 8 to 14. “I am appreciative and grateful for Felecia Gaston, founder and director of Performing Stars of Marin, for establishing such an impactful program to provide performing arts to children such as myself in low-income, underrepresented communities. Felecia Gaston also provided us with learning and growth opportunities. In particular I remember attending a book signing at Dominican University in San Rafael. Marian Wright Edelman, the author of Lanterns: A Memoir of Mentors, presented her memoir and signed each one of our copies. This event left a tremendous impact on my life, teaching me the importance of having influential mentors such as Felecia Gaston, who believes in providing youth with the necessary tools to become successful in life. I still have my signed copy of Edelman’s Memoir, and frequently revisit it. Performing Stars is one of the reasons that I have the confidence, motivation, and drive to pursue and accomplish all of my dreams. Thus far I have completed my undergraduate studies and received my Bachelor’s Degree in Legal Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.” Tashell is an executive assistant for Anjali Dea Music company and plans to enter law school in the future. what a few of our alumni have to say (7) Arnetta Morgan, 34, feels Performing Stars broadened her horizons past her small hometown perspective, and that meeting famous individuals of her race helped her realize she could achieve success as well. Eric is a full-time assistant at Redwood Credit Union and also a student at Dominican College studying for a degree in Strategic Management. Rashima Mosley, 25, says her time with Performing Stars opened her up socially, and although she was “super shy and scared of large crowds,” she was not so during performances. He is presently the team leader for the pontoon line at 33rd Strike Group, a global alliance committed to making boating more feasible for everyone. Lizaray Perez, 31, feels that acquiring mu- sical skills such as rhythm, balance, and reading music which she learned while with Performing Stars, gave her an advantage in high school music class, where she played the clarinet and flute. She says the other skills she learned in Performing Stars, patience and respect, she still utilizes in every day life. “Performing Stars was the greatest high-light point in my life at that age.” Lizaray has completed her education in a trade school and became licensed in her field in 2003. Gymnastics is where he really developed his self-esteem, gained experience outside his community and strengthened relationships with fellow team members. He fondly remembers showcasing his abilities for family and community members and went on to use his gymnastic skills to enhance his performance in other sports. Today Michael is the Director for Farm To Table at Kawaiikalia Akoa Farms in Hawaii and believes Performing Stars is a positive organization fundamental to helping young people advance into professional adults. Davon has performed lead roles at the Marin Theater Company, participated in Marin Shakespeare summer camps, and learned to tap dance. He believes Performing Stars programs should be in all communities. “Theater isn't just for the art of performing, it is the art of verbal perfection. It taught me to act but also to be a great speaker, interpreter, entertainer, and to be able to read those around me.” A well-rounded young man, Davon ran track, played football and continued in theater at Tam High. He was given a humanitarian award by the Marin County Human Rights Commission honoring his work as a peer tutor. He served summer internships at Fireman’s Fund and the Sausalito Police Department. Now a student at College of Marin, he has chosen a career in law enforcement. “Two years ago I just decided that’s what I wanted to do with my life,” he explains. “Police shouldn’t forget what their main purpose is, which is to serve and protect. Part of giving back to your community is keeping it safe.” Kosandra Smith, 35, spent 8 years in Performing Stars but says “I never left - I am 10 always a star.” She is a full-time care provider but states she wants to go to art school and pursue her dream of being an artist, a result of the “thinking big” she does everyday and which she learned while in Performing Stars. The hip-hop program taught her how to dance but says it was the overall wonderful experience she had from a young girl into adulthood that is most important and that helped her self-esteem, improved her grades, developed her social skills and made her feel like she was part of “one big, happy family of all different colors and sizes.” Tashira Smith, 31, graduated from Fortis College in 2015 and is employed full-time in Customer Service. Performing Stars “is the best thing that ever happened to me…Felicia was the best. Thank you for the role you played in my life…The Performing Stars of Marin was the best thing that happened to our community back then, for sure! I just wanted to let you know how much you still "show up" in my life, and now my children's lives...’ Would you like to swing on a star...’” Linda Steele, 24, used her time with Performing Stars to connect with other resources. She took ballet lessons from the age of 5 to senior at Novato High and eventually joined The Marin Ballet Company, which offered her the exceptional training she wanted. Linda graduated from Dominican Uni- what a few of our alumni have to say (8) versity with Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree in Dance and a minor in Art History. Amaja Teal, 25, is a Supervisor of Security at Universal Protection Services. She says Performing Stars taught her to strive for what she wanted in her future. She will teach her daughter the baton twirling skills she learned. Bettine Times, 16, says she had a “forever moment” which was pivotal for her and the development of her confidence. During a performance she needed to step forward because the other performers forgot the steps. By stepping forward and demonstrating the steps to her fellow performers and the parents, she realized she could be great at something. She would enroll her children in Performing Stars “…because Felecia can find a current passion in somebody and take them all the way.” Jazmine Times, 23, has obtained certification as a Pastry Chef from Le Cordon Bleu in San Francisco and works part-time as a cashier. She says she uses the skills she learned while with Performing Stars in her everyday life and tries to share them with others and her own children. “The social skills helped me be more confident in myself, in making friends and standing up for what I believed in.” Ryan Turner, 18: “Felecia helped me greatly. She informed me and my family about a scholarship from the Narada Michael Walden foundation. I was able to get this scholarship because of her and now I will be attending the Academy of Art University in the fall. I want to thank Felicia so much for helping me start my life. I was afraid I wouldn't have been able to go to college. But because of her and her connections I'll be able to live worry free.” Sophie Lynn Peach Turner, 16: “I began to be involved with the 4th of July Parade when I was 5. I remember how it felt to walk down the street and be happy!” She specifically credits Felecia Gaston with being actively in her life for over a decade and helping her focus on her professional career aspirations. Sophie attended Trapeze Arts in Oakland and trained privately to learn contortion with Guiness Book of World Records holder, Inka Seikfer. Daniel Vaughn, 20, thanks the staff of Performing Stars for pushing and encouraging him with love and compassion, and introducing him to the world of theater. He feels he is the person he is today because of it. He is most passionate about having had the lead roles in the Marin Shakepeare plays during summer camp, especially Othello, but also speaks highly of McBeth, Hamlet, and Romeo and Juliet. In addition, he loves African American history and has portrayed Marcus Garvey and one of the Tuskegee Airmen in performances. He received a summer scholarship from the Narada Michael Walden Foundation and attended an Academy of Art College summer program. Desiree Vaughn, 20, is working part-time while attending College of Marin, and is planning to transfer to Sacramento State University to complete a degree in Criminal Justice. She claims Performing Stars actively helped shape the confident young woman she is today and helped her emerge from being very shy as a child. Orianna Vaughn, 26, gained a lot from her short time with Performing Stars and regrets not remaining longer. In her year of participating, she made a lot of new friends and continued on page 16 11 what a few of our alumni have to say (9) learned how to get along with others more easily as a result of feeling better about herself. Today Orianna works full time and is pursuing a 4-year college degree. She feels she still uses the skills she developed while in Performing Stars and would enroll her own children in the program so they could also have the “great opportunity” she had. John Wallace, 37, is still an active member of Performing Stars of Marin. John is a barber and volunteers to give the children in the community free haircuts.“The baton twirling was an awesome exprience and taught me how to love my brother and friends and to watch their backs. Felicia Gaston became like another mother figure for me and provided a safe nurturing environment for me to escape the dysfunction at my home at the time. I was a child in search of myself and found a home here…this program was a huge part of my life…I will forever be grateful for Performing Stars. At home I was always told I would amount to nothing. This program taught me that I can take a stand and make my life count. Today I am blessed with a beautiful family. I am honored to be given a chance to stand up for my life and give my children a beautiful life through this program.” John is a tattoo artist and barber and is also pursuing an Associate Degree in Drug and Alcohol Counseling. “I planned to go to college and make my family proud because no one has ever graduated college in my family. I will be first to accomplish this.” Presita Wallace, 27, is a full-time barista while studying business and psychology at College of Marin. She remembers the many great role models available to her at Performing Stars. They boosted her confidence and allowed her to believe that all dreams are possible. In 2012/13 she was an assistant coach for a cheerleading squad. Jeremy White, “I was in drill team and the Boys to Men group. Both programs kept me safe and off the streets. I still remember walking from the flea market and Felicia would drive up in her jeep while working for the Sheriff's Office. Without this program I really don't think I would be the person I am today…I told them I wanted to be in law enforcement and she took me to meet Marin County Sheriff's Officer Doug Pittman.” Jeremy is now an officer with the California Highway Patrol. Tatiana Williams, 31, discovered Performing Stars through her grandparents and participated in drill team, baton twirling, karate and also pre-school. Jahmanz Williams, 36, spent 7 years with Performing Stars on drill team, baton twirling and karate, departing to play high school football. He says that all of the programs he was in helped him develop social skills, manners, grooming habits, commitment, responsibility and respect for others, enabling him to function as a team player in school and in business. Jahmanz received a B.A. in Political Science, and is now working fulltime as a Customer Service Specialist. He remains a Performing Stars enthusiast and hopes for more funding for all the various programs within the Performing Stars organization. Vanessa Williams, 21, uses the social skills and confidence she developed with Performing Stars to become a better student and a better employee. Vanessa participated in the performing arts and neighborhood programs and went on various field trips with Performing Stars. She believes the organization is critical to providing inner city youth with new experiences and opportunities they otherwise would not have had. She is employed as a deli clerk. performing stars’ roll call 1990-2015 (1) Abdelnur, Kevin Marin City Abdelnur, Stephany Marin City Abrams, Joanna Marin City Acain, Denise Mill Valley Ackerson,
