Thomas Eklo From Our Rector- The Rev. Thomas Eklo Welcome to St. Nicholas Episcopal Church. We are delighted to have you here for our third annual auction. Countless hours of planning and the devotion of many have made this evening happen. The items that are up for auction represent the wonderful talents and the efforts of many within this parish church family. The wide diversity of both silent and live auction items, food, beverage and music make for a fun and engaging evening for all who are here. It is a time for all of us to enjoy the company of old and abiding friendships as well as the opportunity to mix and make acquaintances and connections with new friends. The proceeds from our auction this evening go to support the mission and ministry of St. Nicholas Church. We are a theologically progressive Community, steeped in the strong traditions of the Christian faith while acknowledging that God is always opening new windows of understanding – new ways of perceiving the presence of God in our world and in our journey through this life. Because that is who we are, we welcome all people wherever they may be in their journey in life. We are a caring community living out our responsibility and ministry to one another. But we are also aware of our place in the wider community outside of these doors and our need to be the presence of Christ there as well, respecting the dignity of every human being. Again, welcome! Thank you for being here. Bid often! Have Fun! The Christian fish symbol that many Christians place on their cars is known as the “ixthus.” Five Greek letters form the word “ixthus,” and those letters inside the fish form an acrostic which is a message that Christians clearly identified with. The first letter represented the word Jesus. The second letter represented the word Christ, the next two, God Son, and the final letter represented the word Savior. This adds up to “Jesus Christ is God’s Son, the Savior.” During the early days of Christianity, Christians were often put to death for practicing their faith, so they worshiped in secret places. A fish painted on the outside door of a house let other Christians know that they would be safe and welcome inside. The Christian fish symbol is now often used to identify Christians and/or Christian businesses. ΙΧΘΥΣ (Ichthys) is an acronym/acrostic[4] for "Ίησοῦς Χριστός, Θεοῦ Υἱός, Σωτήρ", (Iēsous Christos, Theou Yios, Sōtēr), which translates into English as "Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior".
