ducational television was founded on the principle that at least one media
channel should focus on programs that would inspire and educate. Today,
more than 86% of all U.S. television households watch PBS over the
course of a year – making PBS the fifth most watched TV or cable channel in the US and the channel ranked number one for educational content.
As we prepare for the beginning of school this month, I hope you realize that because
of your donations young families can rely on PBS KIDS programs like Sesame Street,
Arthur and Daniel Tiger to provide high quality educational content that teaches basic
skills needed for success in school.
As technology has evolved, our trusted children’s broadcast content has leapt to
computers, tablets, smartphones, game devices and other platforms. This allows Vegas
PBS to reach young learners wherever they are, anytime, anywhere, including the
classroom. We also know it works. When our digital content is embedded into school
curriculum, 56% of students showed an increase in critical thinking practices from
pre- to post-test and outperformed state and national assessment norms by more than
10 points.

Vegas PBS LearningMedia launched its pilot program in August 2013 with approximately 8,000 registered users and 17,000 digital resources. Just two years later, we
have more than 50,000 registered students, parents and educators and provide more
than 100,000 standards-aligned resources.
Member support allows us to provide on-air television that lives up to those founding principles of education and enlightenment. We are able to leverage that support
into additional corporate and grant funds that provide services like Vegas PBS
LearningMedia that build on the strength of public media to improve teacher effectiveness and student achievement, to benefit the Southern Nevada community. Vegas PBS
is part of the “New Nevada” offering accessible, accountable, and engaging tools to
improve student performance.

This is a reality show truly worth watching! PBS is known for its live musical and
theatrical performances. BBC has an unparalleled reputation for its science and nature
productions. Now you can become a part of
an unprecedented collaboration between
PBS and BBC in this groundbreaking, natural history television event.
State-of-the-art filming technologies and
live reports from above and below the waves
will bring you one of nature’s greatest
“reality shows.” The multi-platform event
will be anchored by four on-air correspondents from a reporting hub at the Monterey
Bay Aquarium and aboard the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) Office of National Marine
Sanctuaries’ research vessels. Leading scientists and other experts from around the
Bay and along the California coast will provide additional insights.

and currently the senior scientist at
Conservation International; Liz Bonnin, a
science broadcast journalist based in the
UK; Dr. Joy Reidenberg, a comparative
anatomist with expertise in marine mammals and the anatomy of marine life that
populates Monterey Bay; and Steve Backshall,

an award-winning naturalist, writer and television anchor. Bonnin will be following the
journey that many of the spectacular animals make each year to the Bay, as well as
delving into some of the incredible science
and explaining how this body of water
“works.” Meanwhile, Backshall will be
seeking out whales and dolphins and other
marine creatures from a boat in the middle
of the Bay. The team will also be on the
lookout for the Bay’s biggest visitors – blue
whales.The largest animal on the planet can
be surprisingly elusive, so they will take to
the air to try and spot them, join scientists
who tag these ocean giants and look at how
shipping companies and biologists are working together to avoid deadly collisions.

will make long and difficult migrations to
reach it, counting on a glut of fish and
plankton as their reward. Some won’t survive the journey, but if they do reach their
destination safely, the feast isn’t guaranteed. Which animals will arrive this year and
will there be enough food to sustain them?
This vast gathering is also a cause for
celebration because many of these animals
were once hunted to the brink of extinction.
Now, the poaching has stopped along the
California coast, and the seas are protected.
The team will investigate this inspiring success story and explore possible ways to
safeguard the future of all our seas.
The program will take the viewer eye-toeye with marine wildlife, exploring the animals and spectacle of Monterey Bay. During
the course of the broadcast, some of the
inspirational individuals who live and study
in this extraordinary area are highlighted.
In addition, presenters and crew will be
posting news, photos and clips of the action
as it happens for Big Blue Live Digital –
Never Miss A Moment. If the humpbacks
breach, the blue whales arrive or a sea otter
cub takes his first swim, you will see it live!

The most successful folk-rock duo of the
1960s, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel
crafted a series of memorable hit albums
and singles with their choirboy harmonies,
ringing acoustic and electric guitars, and
Simon’s finely wrought songwriting. On
September 19, 1981, Simon and Garfunkel
reunited for a free concert in New York
City’s Central Park with an estimated
500,000 people crammed into the park’s
Great Lawn for the event. The singers, who
had parted company 11 years before, united
their voices once again in “Mrs. Robinson,”
“Homeward Bound,” “Bridge Over Troubled
Water” and other wistful anthems of a turbulent decade. Repeats Monday, August 10

were affected by nuclear fallout and uncovers the consequences of being in Nevada’s

glittering, modern-day “entertainment capital
of the world” and travels through time to
show the grim realities prompting the atomic weapons development race; the rise of
“atomic culture,” including atomic tourism

Mendeleev invents the periodic table which

These remains were destroyed during a
bombing raid in World War II. The discovery
of new bones in Morocco has been the catalyst for a new investigation into this epic
beast. Follow the paleontologists who are
reconstructing this terrifying carnivore that
was a 53-foot-long behemoth with a huge
dorsal sail, scimitar-like claws and massive
jaws. Bringing together experts in paleontology, geology, climatology and paleobotany, this special brings to life the lost
world over which Spinosaurus reigned more

Tommy will be building an elegant and
versatile bass wood room divider. In Japan,
they’re called “shoji,” which means “screen,”
and can be used to partition a room or filter
light in front of a window. Next, Tommy
heads to a shoji workshop in Queens, New
York where craftsmen create screens
according to ancient Japanese methods.
Episodes on August 8 and August 15 are
pre-empted for special pledge programming.

This week, Tommy builds a frame and
panel bookstand that’s perfect for any room.
Later in the episode, he goes to western
Massachusetts to hang out with the legendary Silas Kopf to see how he creates his

a small, central London flat for nearly 50
years. Constantly picking each other apart
and holding on to petty slights for decades,
Freddie and Stuart are always at each
other’s throats, cracking snide remarks
aimed at the other’s age, appearance and
flaws. The critically acclaimed comedy now
returns for a second season of humorous
mishaps, hideous breakups and heart-warming make-ups. Also returning are Violet,
their feisty best pal (Frances de la Tour,
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), and
Ash, their young neighbor who lives upstairs
(Iwan Rheon, Game of Thrones).
The season begins as Freddie and Stuart
host a wake to mark the passing of a dear
friend. Joined by their small circle of elderly
comrades, the couple manages to create a
splendidly awkward evening of meager food

forms like exotic cicadas, neon glow worms,
iridescent dragonflies and many, many
more. Thanks to technical innovations in
lighting, optics and computerized motion
control, the invertebrates’ super-organized,
yet sometimes startling world is revealed
from the perspective of its extraordinary
inhabitants. These creatures may be tiny,
but they live life on a truly grand scale.

Nature: Siberian Tiger Quest
Conservation ecologist Chris Morgan
(Bears of the Last Frontier) has tracked
large predators in some of the most remote
places on earth. He now embarks on a challenge that will fulfill his lifelong dream to
find and film a Siberian tiger living outside
captivity in Russia’s far eastern forests.
The film features the work of Korean cameraman Sooyong Park, the first individual
to film Siberian tigers in the wild. Park
spent years in the forest tracking and film18 V E G A S P B S S O U R C E
ing the world’s biggest cat. Park’s tracking
technique was unconventional but produced
more than a thousand hours of tiger footage
and captured the saga of a Siberian tiger
dynasty. Morgan spends time with Park, learning firsthand just how hard it was for him to

to the coral cays, reef fish populations flourish and the dwarf minke whales arrive to enjoy the

world-renowned Vienna Philharmonic
returns for its 12th open-air concert in the
magnificent gardens of Austria’s Imperial
Schönbrunn Palace. This time, the event has
a distinctly Scandinavian flavor. Rudolf
Buckbinder, internationally acclaimed Austrian
piano virtuoso, is the concert soloist on this
occasion. Works by Grieg, Sibelius, Richard
Strauss and Johann Strauss II are featured.
As is the custom, the magnificent concert
concludes with a performance of the great
Viennese waltz Wiener Blut by Johann
Strauss II.

Uncover the story of Althea Gibson
(1927-2003), who emerged as the unlikely
queen of the segregated tennis world of the
1950s. She was the first African-American
to win Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals,

explores her mentoring by boxer Sugar Ray
Robinson, former New York City mayor
David Dinkins and others. Interviewees

reversing the aging process through exercise
and other lifestyle choices. Charismatic host
Miranda Esmonde-White, a former National
Ballet of Canada dancer, will motivate you to
stretch and strengthen your way to feeling
and looking younger. Interviews with doctors
and physiotherapists, testimonials from
stretch enthusiasts ranging in age from 22 to

states gathered in New Orleans to compete in
the annual Great American Seafood CookOff. This special features highlights from the
event that was hosted by actor Anthony
Anderson. In this competition chefs are given
one hour to showcase their culinary talents in
a dish using domestic seafood native
to their home states. Then, a panel of
judges comprised of an executive chef,
a food magazine editor, a culinary school

Dwight D. Eisenhower displayed an unwavering commitment – both public and covert
– to peaceful co-existence with the Soviet Union in the tumultuous Cold War years.
Based on recent research by established scholars and writers, the documentary series
provides a new understanding of Eisenhower’s path to the presidency from the time
of the successful D-Day landings to an election promise of finding a way to end the
Korean War. As president, his national security policies and tactics kept a divided
world at peace during the 1950s while establishing a clear superiority for the U.S. in
the nuclear arms race. Accounts of more than 20 key American, British and Soviet
witnesses to the major events are also featured.

Every day is a struggle for survival for young
male seals in the untamed waters off the
southern tip of Africa. This is the story of a
courageous little seal who braves the ocean to
follow one of the greatest migrations on
Earth – the Sardine Run. Each year, millions
upon millions of sardines move en masse up
the east coast of South Africa, and their
migration is the impetus for a massive following of formidable predators. Huge flocks of
Cape gannets, thousands of dolphins and hundreds of sharks mount attacks from the air or
the depths of the ocean. There are a few
adventurous seals that join this frenzied journey and what makes them embark on the
Sardine Run remains a mystery.

This acclaimed drama is set during the World War II-era German occupation of
France and reveals its effects on the inhabitants of Villeneuve, a small village in
Jura. The villagers are angered and terrified by the arrival of the German army,
and the next four years of occupation have a shattering effect on the inhabitants’
lives. The series premiere is set in June 1940. In the first episode, a doctor oversees the birth of a child, a married businessman (Thierry Godard) falls in love
with another woman, and a teacher takes her class for a walk in the countryside.
All of them are blissfully unaware of the specter of occupation that will come to
menace their world. In French with English subtitles.
