I
n May 2013, I watched students I welcomed
to St. Francis as two-year-olds walk across our
stage and graduate from eighth grade. Many of
them started here the same year I did, and I am convinced that their poise, kindness, intelligence, and
generosity of spirit are products of both great parenting and great schooling. As I watched, I began
mulling over our school’s mission statement and
started to wonder: How long does it really take to
challenge and motivate students in an academically
and spiritually stimulating environment to become
imaginative, critical thinkers and people for others?
As Head of School, my answer would likely be
the same as our graduates’ parents: years that comprise countless, captured teachable moments.
St. Francis is blessed to be able to begin nurturing
our students during the preschool years, which
allows our faculty to help shape their minds and
hearts that much sooner.
Our class of 2013 embodies St. Francis’ mission
statement beautifully, so I wasn’t surprised to find
that many of them had enrolled as Primary School
students. You know how much I love numbers, so
here’s the breakdown:
Of the eighty-three students who graduated
in 2013, nearly fifty percent of them started as
St. Francis students in kindergarten or earlier:
• 16 started in the Pre-Primary program
• 5 started in Primary I
• 6 started in Primary II
• 1 started in Bridge
• 12 started in Kindergarten
You can read about seven of those students
on page four of this annual report. Winners of
the national Lead2Feed World Hunger Leadership Challenge, the Wolves Against Hunger team
worked with K. L. International School in Meerut,
India, to identify creative solutions to fight hunger
in their local communities. They were
selected as winners from more than
300,000 participants, and gave
their $25,000 Lead2Feed award
check to Kids’ Meals, a local
hunger relief agency.
Again, I ran the numbers. Of the
seven Wolves Against Hunger, five (or
seventy-one percent) had been St. Francis
students since at least kindergarten. Year in and
year out for nine-plus years, they had developed
critical and creative thinking skills, and had ultimately used those skills to be people for others.
Since I joined St. Francis in 2001, I’ve watched
members of the class of 2013—and a host of other
students—develop into remarkably capable, curious,
and caring human beings. They’ve set a wonderful
example for those who follow, and, before we know
it, today’s Primary School students will be crowning
their own achievements on our stage. I look forward
to seeing the amazing things they will accomplish
at St. Francis between now and then.

was a year of milestones.
Our school celebrated
not only its sixtieth year of
nurturing imaginative, critical
thinkers and people for others,
but also several other remarkable achievements. These
stemmed from the dedication
and ingenuity of our faculty,
administrators, board members, volunteers, and students.
Working together, we made
St. Francis’ diamond anniversary year truly shine.
I am particularly proud of
our students, who approached
our administrators with ideas
on how to build awareness of—
and compassion for—several
important causes that were
dear to their hearts. The resulting We Care Day focused on
global issues such as cancer,
chronic hunger, poverty, and
lack of education, and helped
our students see that their
interest and efforts can make
a difference where it’s needed most. (Read more about We Care Day on
page fifteen.)
Also in 2012–13, St. Francis:
• Simplified our enrollment processes by converting them from
paper to digital. As a result, families now go online to apply,
enroll, and re-enroll, as well as to register for summer and afterschool classes.
•Incorporated project-based learning in all divisions, encouraging
our students to inquire deeply and think creatively as they solve
relevant problems and answer meaningful questions.
•Cheered as our Varsity Boys Soccer Team won every single
regular season game; our Varsity Baseball Team won the
HJPC baseball championship; eight of our students
became HJPC champions in swimming and varsity track and field; and one of our students won
the state championship in wrestling.
•Offered our students more opportunities to
apply their learning outside the classroom
by expanding our Middle School Summer
Travel Program from one trip to three.
•Expanded the use of technology in the classroom,
including student use of iPads, Kindles, laptops, and
SMART Boards beginning in Primary II.
While we advanced our school to benefit current students, we also
worked to enhance St. Francis’ future. Both board members and staff
furthered the leadership phase of our A Time to Grow capital campaign,
developing fundraising strategies and materials; soliciting lead gifts
and foundation grants, and ultimately raising more than a third of our
$21 million goal.
Both in and out of the classroom, we continue to reach for the milestones that will optimize our student experience and help us create
graduates who think imaginatively and critically and who embrace their
power to change the world through service.
So, to all those who have loved, served, and nurtured St. Francis since
1952, I salute you. May our past and present contributions continue to be
a blessing to St. Francis families and students for the next sixty years—
and beyond.

Rarely do you have a day named in your honor. But on a sweltering
afternoon in late summer, Houston Mayor Annise Parker proclaimed August
20, 2013, to be “Wolves Against Hunger of St. Francis Episcopal Day School
Day.” During the ceremony, held before the City Council meeting, the
mayor commended the Wolves Against Hunger team of St. Francis Episcopal
Day School, winners of the national Lead2Feed World Hunger Leadership
Challenge.
“Houston has many talented young individuals, and I am proud to recognize the efforts of these students who tackled a serious, prevalent issue in
our community and around the world,” said Mayor Parker. “They have served
as role models for others, and certainly have bright futures ahead.”
The Mayoral Proclamation, designed to honor individuals who have
made a significant contribution to society, highlighted the students’ work
with K.L. International School in Meerut, India, to identify resourceful
solutions to fight hunger in their surrounding areas. Thanks to the $25,000
Lead2Feed award check presented to local nonprofit Kids’ Meals on behalf of
St. Francis, the organization was able to provide 20,000 additional lunches to
Houston children living in poverty.
Councilman Andrew C. Burks Jr. closed the proclamation presentation by
commenting, “At St. Francis, I know you all know about the scripture, ‘Faith
without works is dead.’ You have definitely shown the faith and you have
done the work, and I commend you all for it.”

The teacher-led educational program combines a
standards-based leadership curriculum with the
challenge of solving world hunger through servicelearning projects conducted by student teams.
Yum! Brands Foundation provided nearly $250,000
in prize money grants to 140 schools for U.S. public
charities engaged in hunger relief programs.

The Wolves Against Hunger team
members were not the first St. Francis students to
give Kids’ Meals a helping hand! In observance of
Worldwide Hunger Day in October 2012, St. Francis
Lower and Middle School students made 1,600 sack
lunches from bread, bologna, juice boxes, fruit cups,
and supplies they donated. And Primary School
students assembled “birthday bags” from their
donations of cake mix, frosting, sprinkles, candles,
and birthday plates and napkins. In fact, the relationship between St. Francis and Kids’ Meals dates back
a number of years, with St. Francis student service
projects often designed to benefit the child-centered
organization.

Founder’s Day Dreams of the Past With Visions for the Future

elebrating sixty years of “Memories &
Milestones” was the order of the day during
the St. Francis Founders Day celebration
on January 11, 2013. Head of School Dr. Susan Lair
served as master of ceremonies as students, faculty,
parents, alumni, and board members took a sentimental stroll down
memory lane that

highlighted the
journeys of past
students as well as
founding principal

defining directive to “do some strong dreaming”
about the future of St. Francis.
“The Board’s responses at that time included
such far-fetched hopes as a gymnasium, a middle
school, a separate lunch room, a good art program,
a scholarship fund, an endowment fund, and more
land,” detailed Dr. Lair of the reaction to Woolrich’s
1975 decree. “Today, all those trustees deserve
a

our thanks, as their dreams laid the foundation for
our current reality.”
Well before the steady growth of the 1970s and
beyond, however, the St. Francis community was
already focused on laying the most necessary of
foundations in the quality of students it produced.
Dr. Lair showcased a 1953 St. Francis diploma,
awarded to a three-year-old boy named Len, who
was a member of
the first nursery
class at
St. Francis Day
School. She pointed
out that Len’s
teacher couldn’t
possibly have
predicted that her
young student
would one day
become an investment banker who traveled the
world, working in Europe, the Middle East, and
Africa, before returning to Houston. “Len’s teacher
probably also could not have predicted that the little nursery school where she worked part time, and
which had only twenty-four students, would one
day become the largest Episcopal parish school in
the United States,” Dr. Lair continued. “But it did.”
The Right Reverend C. Andrew Doyle, himself a
former St. Francis student, weighed in with his own
memories and congratulations via video. “You ministered to me as a child as you minister to children
every day at St. Francis,” he said. “You are shaping
the minds and hearts of all the children these loving parents bring to you.”
The Reverend William “Dubb” Brooks, who
served as St. Francis’ senior chaplain for twelve
years, echoed Bishop Doyle’s sentiments, calling
St. Francis “one of the most important places at
which I’ve lived, served,
loved, and been loved.”

stop and look back simply to reminisce—on this
day, let us look forward and begin to dream about
what God intends in your mission and ministry in
the future.”

Gala Celebrates a Treasured Past … and a Brilliant Future
Generous Underwriters
Memories and magic mingled at the
St. Francis Diamond Anniversary Gala on the
evening of April 6, 2013. United in tribute to our
school’s treasured past and brilliant future, more
than 650 supporters enjoyed a glittering night of
bidding, dancing, feasting, and friendship.
The sounds of Sauce the Band; a lively game
of musical chairs; and dynamic live and big board
auction fun added to the merriment.
Many thanks are due to the event’s incredible
volunteers. From auction to underwriting, class
projects to party sign-ups, and catalog creation to
ballroom bling, a team of seventy-five dedicated and
hardworking committee members—led by chairs
Jessica Brazelton and Susan Light—made the night
a sparkling success. They joined with the gala’s
generous underwriters, attendees, and auction
donors—as well as teachers and staff—in a long line
of St. Francis supporters who, for sixty years, have
devoted themselves to making our school community the family it is today.

Turning Up the Fun at Festival
W
hat more fitting way to round out
St. Francis’ 60th anniversary year than
with a day of all-out romp and play?
Despite a rainy forecast, St. Francis Festival Day
2013 shone on April 28, upholding its reign as a
traditional student favorite (Just ask those who
volunteered to be in the dunk tank!). The sun came
out just in time for event-goers to live up to the
festival’s theme of “Turn Up The Fun.”
Families jammed to fresh beats from the DJ,
rocked the bounce houses, slammed some cascarones, and devoured tasty snow cones and tacos. The
43rd annual One Community Fund event benefited
both St. Francis Episcopal Church and St. Francis
Episcopal Day School.

We both feel so fortunate to have
experienced the spirit of St. Francis
for so many years, and we share the
desire to serve God by helping others.

we share the desire to serve God by helping others.”
Helping others is definitely something Ellen
knows about. During her thirteen years as a
St. Francis mom—first to daughter Mallory, who
finished her freshman year at Baylor University in
spring 2013, and later to Charles, a 2013 St. Francis
graduate—she filled roles ranging from Buddy Family program chair to Middle School Annual Fund
chair, scrapbook co-chair, and homeroom parent.

Perhaps the affiliation that most defined her
years at St. Francis was with the Parents Association Care and Compassion Committee. Of the
program, Ellen explains, “St. Francis is known for
being a faith-based, nurturing school, and this
committee brought real assistance and comfort
to those in need.” Throughout the years, as both
chair and member, she worked with the group to
find effective new ways to offer support, including
implementing online meal calendars and involving
homeroom parents and teachers in the communications process. “It truly is a program essential to
demonstrating the ‘St. Francis way’ in our community,” she says.
Ellen and her husband, Sam, agree that their
children have been blessed to receive a St. Francis education, both academically and spiritually.
With relatives hailing from alma maters including
Dartmouth, MIT, Emory, and Harvard, Ellen maintains that hers is a family that values learning. “We
rejoice over our children’s St. Francis years and
memories,” she reflects. “The faculty gives so much
each day to our children that we, as parents, need
to give back and support them, too!”
St. Francis salutes Ellen and her family for all the
ways they have given back to our school since 2000,
and wishes them the best in their future ventures.
Apparently, the feeling is mutual.
“St. Francis is like a nest where you know your
child is loved and safe, but, suddenly, the time
comes for them to fly,” Ellen concludes. “When
they’ve been taught the cornerstones of faith, scholarship, courage, and honor, these qualities become
an enduring part of your child, and are priceless
gifts that go with them.”
nitiated by third and fourth graders, We Care
Day 2013 showcased St. Francis students’ commitment to being people for others. The day
came about after a number of students approached
St. Francis administrators with ideas on how to
increase awareness of global issues such as cancer,
chronic hunger, poverty, and lack of education.
The event kicked off with a student-created
video describing how St. Francis students would
“leave their footprint” on the world by showing
care for cancer patients and increasing empathy
for those suffering from poverty, hunger, and a lack
of available education. Children heard the account
of Lucille Bridges, mother of Ruby Bridges, who
made history when she boldly allowed her daughter
to be the first African-American child to attend a
desegregated school in New Orleans in 1960. Mrs.
Bridges encouraged the students to appreciate their
education, follow their dreams, trust God, and display kindness and grace in every situation.
On this special day, students wore pink shirts
to honor those who are sick. They also went
without shoes to highlight the hardship faced
by so many others in the world; brought
shoes to donate to local charities as well as
to schools in Haiti; teamed up with another
grade level to participate in an Act of
Kindness; and planted flowers in honor
of this memorable event.
As they wrapped up the day’s activities, students brainstormed ways they
could keep We Care Day going yearround at school and at home. During
this time of reflection, they gave thanks
for all they have, prayed for those
who are less fortunate, and had
the chance to truly realize that
each and every child is able to
make a difference in our world.

ince 2010, St. Francis has paid annual tribute
to an eighth-grade parent whose generosity
of spirit in volunteer roles has exemplified
the school’s mission to be people for others. We are
proud to introduce our 2013 Outstanding Volunteer,
Ellen Moreton.
When Ellen’s son, Charles, garnered praise
for his part in St. Francis’ award-winning Wolves
Against Hunger team in spring 2013, those who
know Ellen best weren’t the least bit surprised. After
all, a mom who’s spent years giving selflessly of
herself in myriad volunteer roles would no doubt
inspire like-minded generosity in her children.

nnually since 2004, the Sarah W. Woolrich
Fund for Faculty has provided life-changing professional development opportunities for our faculty—from national explorations of
archaeology and horticulture to intercontinental
adventures in history, religion, and pedagogy. Last
year was no exception, and we are so proud of the
following winners of the 2013 Woolrich Awards.

Adventure: International Kodály Symposium
Location: Kecskemét, Hungary

At the heart of St. Francis’ Primary and Lower
School music programs, the Kodály Method uses
folk songs and movement to teach musical concepts in a simple, sequential way. Kodály originated
in Hungary, and our music teachers traveled to
Kecskemét this past summer to attend the 21st
International Kodály Symposium. While there, they
gained in-depth knowledge of the program and
philosophy, which was introduced at St. Francis
in 2011–12. They also brought home a wide selection of enrichment materials; the ability to further
enhance St. Francis’ music program across divisions; and renewed excitement and inspiration that
is helping them continue to infuse their students
with a passion for making and enjoying music.
Adventure: Tour of England, Scotland, and Wales
Location: Great Britain
For Greg Urbani, the medieval past is a vivid
part of the present as he teaches world history and
oversees the annual seventh-grade Medieval Feast.
On his Woolrich-funded trip to Great Britain, he
studied medieval architecture, artifacts, and art;
the Renaissance; the Reformation of the Catholic
Church; and the Scientific Revolution—and saw
as many castles as possible. Mr. Urbani has big
plans to enrich his classes with the photos, videos,
artifacts, and firsthand knowledge he brought back
from across the pond.

SARAH W. WOOLRICH FUND FOR FACULTY
Named for our school’s remarkable first principal, the
fund is designed to enhance the educational experience
of our students by first expanding the horizons of our
teachers. Thanks to the Woolrich Fund, our teachers have
stood before the art masters at museums in Paris, participated in a dinosaur dig, walked through the Holy Land,
and toured the Roman Empire. For more information,

VOLUNTEER Whether they’re teaching Art à la Carte
lessons, selling Wolf Wear, celebrating student birthdays,
planning special events or fueling a broad range of other
activities, volunteers are the lifeblood of the St. Francis
community. Not only does volunteering allow parents to
connect with other St. Francis community members, but
it also results in a much richer educational experience for

“My time at St. Francis has
sped by,” she says, “but that’s
what happens when you are
doing something you love and
enjoy. I am honored to have
had the opportunity to work,
play, laugh, and learn at this
school for so many years.”
Watching children grow and
develop has always been the highlight of her career, says Mrs. McNay.
Since graduating with a bachelor’s
degree in education from Sam
Houston State University, she’s
worked as an elementary educator
and art specialist in the Houston,
Clear Creek, Alief, and Spring
Branch school districts. After joining
St. Francis in 1988, she spent two
years as a Primary I teacher and twelve years as a Bridge teacher, while
acting as Associate Director of Primary School.
Today, Mrs. McNay spends her hours assisting with the observation,
supervision, and evaluation of the Primary School’s policies, curriculum,
faculty, and students. She plays an integral role in helping the school
implement project-based learning and the Reggio Emilia approach,
which focuses on allowing every child’s natural curiosity to direct his
or her learning, promoting respect for all, and utilizing the teacher as a
facilitator.
After winning a Sarah W. Woolrich Fund for Faculty Award in 2012,
Mrs. McNay explored this approach in more depth at the Reggio Children International Study Group in Italy.
When asked how she pursues lifelong learning, Mrs. McNay
is quick to point out that her passion for the Spanish language and culture drives many of her professional-development ventures.
A 2005 Woolrich Award sent her to the Don Quijote School in Guanajuato, Mexico, for an intensive, two-week Spanish course. In 2008, she
was invited to present a teacher-training workshop at St. John’s Episcopal School in Puerto Cortes, Honduras, which was followed by a 2009
Woolrich award that sent her to Costa Rica with a group of
St. Francis teachers to study Spanish further.
At school or home, Mrs. McNay pursues all her aspirations with her trademark enthusiasm. One great
love is art, in which she minored during college.
Over the years, she’s given art lessons to children
and taken classes herself at local museums, as well
as painted regularly in her husband’s art studio. And, of
course, she’s also mastered the incredible art of teaching.

wo eighth-grade students from the Class of 2013 were named
top entering freshmen for the 2013-14 school year at their respective high schools. Joseph Theriot received the Strake Jesuit Ignatian
Scholar Award, while Catherine Gassiot earned the St. Agnes Academy
Merit Scholarship. Both prestigious awards honor incoming freshman
with outstanding entrance exam scores, among other criteria.
Joe and Catherine received their awards at the 2013 St. Francis Middle School Recognition and Awards Assembly. Trip Norkus, academic
assistant principal at Strake Jesuit, was on hand to present the Strake
Jesuit award, as was St. Agnes Head of School Sister Jane Meyer, OP,
who awarded the St. Agnes Academy scholarship.
Dr. Lair remarked, “We are so very proud of Joe and Catherine
and wish them the very best in their high school careers. I know that
the St. Francis commitment to academic excellence and faith-based
values will serve as an invaluable foundation in their lives as people
for others.”

Nicole Ederle ’85 is married to Brendan Ederle and lives in
Houston. They have three children—Pierson, Cameron,
and Genevieve—who all attend St. Francis. This year

Rob Chisholm ’90 lives in Houston with his wife, Jessica, and
their twin boys. They welcomed Audrey Camille on February 1, 2013. Their sons, Carson and Blake, entered the
Primary School at St. Francis in the fall of 2013.
Ashley Ruman von Eschenbach ’85 is married to Chris von
Renee Marrou Huss ’90 lives in Houston with her husband,
Monte. Renee is a teacher at Askew Elementary.
Eschenbach and lives in Galveston. Ashley and Chris are
proud aunt and uncle to twenty-one nieces and nephews!
Shelley Swift Lugon-Moulin ’85 lives in Switzerland where
she practices law for Ernest & Young. She and her husband, Julien, have two children, Noah (13) and Emilie (9).
Joel Hollenbeck ’86 has worked in higher education pub-
lishing for the past sixteen years and is currently the
executive editor for finance and economics at John Wiley
and Sons Publishing in Hoboken, New Jersey. He and his
wife, Mariam, have three children, Madeleinne (10),
Aidan (7), and Clara (4). Joel still runs almost every day
and has fond memories of the St. Francis track and cross
country programs.
Marcy Leisten ’87 is living in Denver, Colorado, where she
is a floral designer. She also is attending Metropolitan
State University and was married in August of 2013.
Courtney Ruman Chisholm ’87 and Kelley Chisholm ’88 love living
in the Texas Hill Country. Their three children, Kathryn
(10), Maggie (8), and John Kelley (7), attend Geneva
School of Boerne.
Laurel Tate Maccoy ’88 lives in Colorado where she owns the
shoe store Two Sole Sisters with her sister Lindsey Tate ’91.
She is married to Izzy MacCoy and they have one son,
Wyatt Tate-MacCoy (7). Laurel and her family are raising
backyard chickens this year and are looking forward to
having fresh eggs in the fall. They now have four chickens
and three cats in their menagerie!
Allison Serafin ’90 was recently elected to a four-year term
on the Nevada Board of Education. She also works as a
Senior Research Associate at UNLV and supports the
school district as a talent and instruction consultant. She
recently ran into Kyle Messmand ’90 at a Rolling Stones concert in Las Vegas. Allison stated that he looks exactly the
same, is married to a brilliant woman named Catherine,
and has a one-year-old daughter named Peyton.
Andrea Montgomery Stewart ’90 and her husband, Paul,
welcomed their second son, Montgomery Jackson.
The Stewart family is still enjoying living in San Francisco.
Lee Zieben ’90 lives in Houston with his wife, Tricia, and
their daughter, Chloe, who is a student at St. Francis. He
is the founder and current president of AHG Properties,
an environmentally conscious multifamily development
company with properties across Texas.
Elizabeth Rozell Borski ’91 lives in Houston, where she is an
account executive for Old Republic Title. She and her
husband, Joey, have two children, Annie (5) and Blake (4).
Callie Parker Bradford ’91 lives in Houston and is working
their first child, Georgeanne Bettine Bruckner-Rust, on
December 21, 2012. Caroline is currently the General Counsel
to the Small Business Committee of the US Senate.

Blair Hix ’97 lives in Houston, where she works for Landry’s

Houston and welcomed their son, Asher Dean Barry,
on April 4, 2013. Kirby and Reagan attended St. Francis
together from the time they were five years old until Reagan left St. Francis in the sixth grade to attend Kinkaid.
She graduated from the University of Texas in 2000, and
Kirby, who attended Episcopal High School, graduated
from Texas A&M in 2000. They reconnected in 2004, and
later married.
Joseph Jornayvaz ’97 works for Lockton Companies in Houston. He and Isla have a son, Joseph, who is one year old.

Christina Pickett Blackwell ’95 lives in Los Angeles, California,
with her husband, Bart. She is employed by City National
Bank in the Real Estate Finance Department.
Kirk Soodhalter ’95 lives in Linz, Austria. In 2012, he earned
a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Temple University.
He now is an applied mathematics researcher at Johannes
Kepler University. He says hello to all St. Francis alumni!

he works for Wise & Susong, LLC.
Kristen Clark Nix ’96 and her husband, Lee, welcomed twin
boys, Will and Hunter, at the end of August 2013, making
their son, Ryan, a big brother.
Ryan Bergeron ’97 lives in Houston, where he works as a
private wealth advisor for Northern Trust.
Katie Leonard Forney ’97 now lives in Houston with her
husband, Johnny. They have two children, Charlie (4)

Christie Peeler Garella ’97 lives in Charlotte, North Carolina,
with her husband, Kiel. They met while students at
Sewanee and were married there in October 2011.

Sofia Herrera Massey ’97 and Owen N. Massey ’97 received a bach-
elor’s degree in journalism, with a business minor, from
Texas A&M University in 2005. Owen completed a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, with a double minor in
mathematics and natural sciences, at Southern Methodist
University, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He
recently received an MBA from the Acton School of Business in Austin, Texas. Sofia and Owen met as students at
St. Francis, and were married in 2007. They have two sons,
North and Miles. North, the eldest, became a St. Francis
Wolf in the Pre-Primary program this fall.
Stephanie Rose Hill Muhlbauer ’97 moved with her family to
Kansas City in the middle of eighth grade. She completed
high school in Kansas City, and then graduated from Virginia Tech. She knew she wanted to leave Blacksburg to
find the right job—which landed her right back here! She
and her husband, Kemp, are happy to call Houston home.
Cabell Walker-Wood ’97 married David Wood at St. Francis
Episcopal Church in August 2013. A St. Francis Alumni
Board member, she works for Crime Stoppers of Houston
as their director of development.
Ryan Fontaine ’98 is in his fifth year as the The Kinkaid
School’s head wrestling coach. He also coaches boys’
volleyball in the fall and lacrosse in the spring.
Jamie Hibbert ’98 lives in Houston, where he is in oil and gas
banking with Texas Capital Bank.
Tess Massey ’98 lives in Austin, Texas. She is employed with
McGarrah Jessee as an advertising account executive.
Monica Urquidi Palandjoglou ’98 is married to Ianni
Palandjoglou and lives in Houston. They have two
children, Costas (2) and Mila (1).

Samantha Speakmon ’05 graduated from The University of
Texas McCombs School of Business with a degree in
finance and business honors in the spring of 2013. She
began law school at the University of Texas in the fall.
Dane Webb ’98 graduated from Texas A&M in 2006 with a
degree in business economics. After a short stint in the
investment banking world, he joined Raymond James and
Associates, Houston, as a financial advisor. In May 2011,
he married his college sweetheart, Erin Elizabeth Molaison.
Caroline Dudley Bean ’99 is married to Andrew Bean ’00 and
coordinator for Smart 911.
Brooke Relyea ’01 recently graduated from Southern
Methodist University School of Law. She is employed by
Bracewell and Giuliani in the commercial litigation group.
Ginny Blecher French ’02 was married June 15, 2013, to Walker
French at Second Baptist Church, Houston, Texas. Ginny
currently works for Cypress-Fairbanks ISD as an elementary school speech pathologist.
Alex Hutchens ’03 lives in Atlanta, Georgia, where she is
employed by B Public Relations.
Taylor Weaver ’03 lives in Houston, where he works in commercial real estate with Cresca. Taylor graduated from

Andrew Jones ’06 is a junior at the University of Richmond
and is pursuing an American studies major and a history
minor. He gives weekly tours to prospective students and
is a three-year blogger for the admission office student
blog page called “Spider Diaries.”
Allison Asarch ’09 won the Award for Excellence in the
study of Music at Episcopal High School. She was also a
member of the Admissions Club. She served on the Arts
Leadership Board and received numerous other awards
for her musical talent.
Katie Butler ’09 was named to first chair in the alto section
for State Choir. She was a member of the distinguished
St. Agnes Strake Triple Trio. She was active in student
council and acted in many drama productions while in
high school. She also was awarded the E. Thayne Tolle
Music Scholarship from the Texas Private School Music
Educators Association.
Kacey Clemens ’09 graduated from Memorial High School.
Blake Henningsen ’09 attended Episcopal High School. He
was awarded Defensive Player of the Year by the Houston
Touchdown Club. He was All SPC and also Varsity MVP.
As a linebacker, he set the program record with 184 career
tackles. During his senior year, Blake posted 81 tackles—
12 for losses—to go with 4 sacks.
John Melody ’09 was named Varsity Baseball MVP at Episcopal High School. He graduated cum laude and received a
scholarship to play baseball at Dartmouth.
Pierce Pontikes ’09 graduated from Strake Jesuit and is playing baseball at Trinity University on scholarship.
Matt Ellis ’09 graduated from The Kinkaid School and
received a football scholarship from Rhodes College.
Abigail Porter ’09 attended Episcopal High School. While
there she was an AP Scholar, National Merit finalist, and
salutatorian of her class. She was recognized as the
Outstanding Female Student. She also won awards for
excellence in the studies of English, history and social
science, religion, and publications.
Tess Gee ’09 graduated from St. Agnes Academy, where she
received their highest award, the Veritas Award. She also
won the Leader Award and served as class president.
Edie Powers ’09 graduated cum laude from The Kinkaid
School. She was a counselor at Camp Mystic this summer
and now attends Vanderbilt University.
Lauren Graham ’09 graduated from Episcopal High School.
She received a scholarship to play field hockey at
Wake Forest.
Abigail Roberts ’09 graduated from Episcopal High School.
Charlie Giammalva ’09 won the Award for Excellence in the
Study of Science at Episcopal High School and graduated summa cum laude. He was awarded a scholarship to
attend the University of Texas School of Engineering.
Kristen Waheed ’09 received the Head of School Award at
Episcopal High. She was also a National Merit Scholar
and graduated summa cum laude.
He received a scholarship to play baseball for The University of Texas.
Mason Hale ’09 was named MVP for the Episcopal High
School wrestling team. He also graduated cum laude.
She now is enrolled in the Business Honors Program at
Texas A&M University.
Larry Wilkins ’09 graduated from the The Kinkaid School.
He received a scholarship from The University of Texas–
Dallas to play basketball.
Ashley Brown ’08 and Calhan Hale ’08 went on a mission trip
to Africa during the summer of 2013. The focus of this trip
was aid to children.
Christina Eickenroht ’08 had a wonderful freshman year at
Georgetown. She was lucky to have taken a selective class
taught by the college president. She was also accepted
into the prestigious Carroll Fellows Program that works to
train future leaders.

Raleigh Wooldridge ’09 graduated magna cum laude from
Episcopal High School. He was named Outstanding Male
Student, received the Wellness Award, and was president
of the Admissions Club and the Astronomy Club. He also
served as a mentor to freshmen students.
Anna Bailey ’10 serves as vice president of the Episcopal
High School Student Council for the 2013–14 school year.
She is also a varsity cheerleader.
Sheldon Gray ’10 and Davis Gray ’10 both attend Strake Jesuit
Preparatory. During the summer of 2013 they participated
in the First Presbyterian mission trip to the Dominican Republic, where they helped in nursing homes and
orphanages.
Abigail Henningsen ’10 is a varsity cheerleader at Episcopal
High School. She won the Sportsmanship Award for the
girls’ varsity golf team. Abigail was also president of
Troops for Troops and the Chapel Committee.
Kaitlin Karcher ’10 is a member of St. Agnes Academy’s
National Honor Society and Science National Honor
Society. She serves as a campus minister and is on the
Dominican Preaching Team. She was awarded All-American Dancer and is a colonel of the Tiger Girls for the
2013–14 school year.
Marisol Leiva ’10 is involved with student council and is the
president and founder of the Youth of Latin Origin Club
at St. Agnes Academy. During the summer of 2013 she
volunteered at Westview School. She also was voted to be
a cheer captain for St. Thomas High School.
Madison Tebo ’10 is an honor student at The Tenney School.
She serves on the Student Council and writes for the
school newspaper. She also volunteers for “Dec My
Room,” a charity that decorates hospital rooms for children facing long hospitalizations.
Leah Thomas ’10 attends Memorial High School. She is a
member of Business Professions of America and of the
Academy of Finance; she also is a student mentor. Leah is
very active in theater and performed in the spring musical, South Pacific.

Robert Brown ’11 attends Strake Jesuit Preparatory, where
he is an honor student and plays on the golf team. In 2013
he participated in the First Presbyterian summer mission
trip to the Dominican Republic, where he helped in nursing homes and orphanages.
Emily Detiveaux ’11 attends Houston Christian High School,
where she was inducted into the National Honor Society.
She is in the Distinguished Scholar Program and was
named Most Outstanding Sophomore. She plays varsity
soccer and varsity lacrosse, and was awarded All-Zone in
SPC for both sports.
Amir Taghizadeh ’11 will be presenting his Spring–Summer
2014 Collection at Fashion Houston in November 2013.
He interned this summer with Oscar de la Renta for one
month in New York. He learned a lot and even designed a
little for them. He’s been invited to return next summer.
Amanda Thompson ’11 served as Vice President of the
sophomore class at Houston Christian High School.
She is a member of Passport to Lead and the choir, and
performed in the The Wizard of Oz. She was named Most
Outstanding Drama I student.
Colin McGrath ’11 starred as Oz in the Houston Christian
production of The Wizard of Oz. He won the Most Outstanding Spanish 3 award.
