About the Salem Arts Festival
The Salem Arts Festival is a Salem Main Streets Initiative, organized in
collaboration with a number of Salem organizations and individuals. Salem
Main Streets’ mission is the continued revitalization of downtown Salem as
a vibrant, year-round, retail, dining and cultural destination through business
retention, recruitment, and the promotion of the downtown district – funded in
part by the City of Salem and Mayor Kimberley Driscoll, the Salem Chamber
of Commerce, and Destination Salem.
The Salem Arts Festival promotes the arts in downtown Salem through a collaborative festival for residents and visitors providing opportunities to highlight the
existing artist community and encourage general community participation in
the arts. The festival celebrates the arts in all its forms: painting, photography,
sculpture, installation, dance, music, writing, film, new media, performance,
theatre, poetry, and more.

MOVE WITH ME
One goal of the Salem Arts Festival is
to invite as many people as possible
to not only enjoy but participate in
the arts. This year we are introducing
“Move With Me,” a collaborative
public art project led by artist and
architect Claudia Paraschiv, featuring an installation of pinwheels over
Front Street. The playful pinwheels,
powered by wind and local creativity,
symbolize our past history and shared
future with far-off cultures, moving in
confluence when the wind is just right.
As we look forward to natural
resources like wind to power our
collective future, we also celebrate
Salem’s sailing past that connected
our city with far-off places. Over the
past few months, community groups
and locals of all ages and abilities
have decorated over several hundred
individual pinwheels by drawing
their own interpretations of traditional
textile patterns from different cultures
around the world.
Move With Me is made possible
by the support of our generous sponsors: The Phoenix School, Salem State
University Center for Creative and
Performing Arts, Salem Witch Museum, and especially Janet Doyle and
Doyle Sailmakers. Many thanks to

at 10 Derby Square for their support

The Ladies of Salem 2016
Look up, look around! The Ladies of Salem are adorning lampposts and businesses along Essex Street.
A most identifiable and historic icon of the days when Salem Harbor was an international hub that welcomed thousands of sailing
ships, figureheads on the prow of ships served as ornamentation
and identification. These figureheads were thought to ward off evil spirits and provide protection for the ship. A Lady figurehead was thought by
many sailors to be able to calm a storm at sea.
The Lady of Salem public art project was launched in 2012, uniting Salem’s maritime history and cultural influence. Enjoy over 20
figurehead interpretations throughout the City, hand-painted by
local artists.
Made possible by Salem Beautification volunteers, local artists, and business
sponsors.
