Warren’s creative community is a diverse collection of well-established artists who have made this historic waterfront town their home. Working from one of many refurbished mills, commercial properties and their homes, Warren artists thrive in the casual, yet industrious, town atmosphere that has easy access to Providence and Boston, the East Bay Bike Path, and is one of nine “Tax-Free Arts Districts” in Rhode Island. Known locally as the smallest town in the smallest county in the smallest state in the U.S., Warren’s tree-lined village streets are an easy stroll to explore galleries, restaurants, theatre, independently owned shops and one of the last working waterfronts in New England. Warren The oldest 4th of July celebration in America is likely the first thing that most folks identify with historic Bristol. Today’s Bristol is more than that, with a vibrant cultural base to support the arts with its many galleries and studios. Roger Williams University and its Performing Arts Center is host to many exciting events. Bristol's charm is rooted in its historic architecture, great shops and restaurants, its walkable waterfront, and museums such as Linden Place, Herreshoff Marine, and Blithewold, all public venues for education and recreation. Visitors may be accommodated by a waterfront hotel or some quaint B&B’s. He is a Fulbright-Hays fellow, a MacDowell Colony fellow, and a recipient of fellowships from the NEA and RISCA. In 1991, Brigidi collaborated with poet Robert Bly on Angels of Pompeii, published by Ballantine. Remarkable People is Brigidi’s second book, published in 1995 by Sunningdale. Brigidi has taught at the University of Hawaii, University of Connecticut, Providence College, and RISD. He is currently teaching Aesthetics at Roger Williams University. His work has been acquired by more than thirty museums. stephanbrigidi.com, 401.253.2351 N Tom Culora holds a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York. His most recent work explores the reconciliation between post-modernism and the historical line of art that existed in the late 19th to the mid-20th century. He accomplishes this work through examining psychology of posting personal video streams on the web with the reciprocal psychology of viewing these images. He then appropriates images through a highly selective process that results in large two-dimensional works painted on framed hardboard using traditional oils. The frames are often an integral element of the work. His most recent exhibition was a collaborative show at The Royal Institution in London, titled AUTOCATALYSIS. 619.995.2050, autocatalysis.org, tomculora.com, tom@tomculora.com O The sounds of nature almost come alive when viewing Pat Warwick’s art. With delicate precision and fine craftsmanship, Warwick creates every ceramic piece by hand – one-of-a-kind wall hangings, mirrors, coffee tables, or backsplashes for kitchens and bathrooms. Each installation is custom designed to suit the unique space and color requirements of her client. A graduate of the RISD, Warwick has spent thirty years finding inspiration from the natural world near her home by the sea and from her travels. Her commissioned work is part of private and corporate collections around the globe, as well as galleries and fine craft exhibitions in the United States. patwarwick.com, pwarwick@pwarwick.com March 29 • April 26 • May 31 • June 28 • July 26 •August 30 September 27 • October 25 • November 29 P Ed McAloon is a stained glass artist and sculptor whose interest in stained glass began while working in the architectural salvage industry, which lead to studies at RISD with local glass artists. His inspiration comes from his seaside surroundings as well as vintage graphic design, such as record cover art and abstract concepts. He utilizes traditional kiln-fired glass staining techniques in much of his work. Numerous commissioned pieces have been completed for clients to their individual specifications. McAloon also creates kiln-formed pieces that are assembled into sculptural works in conjunction with wood and various metals. Other works have utilized steam-bent wood, as well as cold-bent and welded steel. edmcaloon@mcadesignstudio.net, 401.595.8405, mcadesignstudio.net, Syndhi Daniels Syndhi Daniels’ current work, “Portraits of Nature,” portrays the character and emotional qualities a particular scene personifies. “When I’m held captive by a painting, when it’s done with me,” she says, “I am sometimes surprised by the direction taken and the mercurial aspects of the final image.” Heraclitus said, “You can’t step into the same river twice.” Daniels adds, “nor can you look upon the same scene twice – subtle changes occur with the movements of the sun, wind, shadow, and with the observer’s varying tuning/reception.” Ultimately, her paintings show a universe parallel to the obvious, a metaphysical moment where one enters into the unfamiliar to receive the teaching Nature offers. cadaniels.com, breathepeace@cox.net, 401.254.0161 Ellen Blomgren NOVEMBER 29 STUDIO #129, 30 CUTLER STREET, WARREN Adam Tracy Ellen Blomgren is a professional ceramic sculptor, specializing in animal creations for the garden. While at Mt. Hope and in college, Adam designed and printed shirts for his clothing line, Dubs Deep. He still prints wearable art, but has swapped the t-shirt for heavy weight paper that hangs on the wall. The subject of his art changes based on current interests, with pieces centered on favorite musicians, beautiful women, shoes, and song lyrics. etsy.com/shop/adamtracy, adamptracy@gmail.com, 401.829.1847 2012 I Simone Renee Spruce-Torres JULY 26 ROGER WILLIAMS ART GALLERY - RWU, 1 OLD FERRY ROAD, BRISTOL Simone Renee Spruce-Torres is a contemporary representational artist who creates a rich variety of multicultural portraits and figures placed in distinctive interiors and exteriors, creating a sense of time and place to engage her audience. Currently, she works as an artist and designer out of her studio in Warren, which has produced product lines for home and apparel and, more recently, a serious pursuit of painting. Her layered paintings are the dominant subject of her investigations. The historical mills of New England hold the essence of her own experience with the memories of past lives in the textile industry, layered with the lush landscapes in which she grew up.
