Yorkton Regional High School 2014 Valedictory Address
On behalf of the
Yorkton Regional High
School’s graduating class
of 2014, I would like
to thank our parents,
administrators, teachers,
school division representatives, and all other
guests for coming and
sharing this special day
with us. I am honored to
represent the 47th graduating class of the YRHS.
I’ve heard that everyone always forgets the
valedictorian speech. So,
I was a bit disappointed
to hear that I wasted four
years of being a nerd for
no one to remember this
part of the ceremony.
Therefore I came to the
realization that I had to
approach this from the
same perspective as I
would when learning a
new dance; putting my
best foot forward and
crossing my fingers that I
get it right.
The first time we all
came together as one
group was Raider For
a Day. That was the day
that we discovered that
there were more people
than we could ever have
imagined in the same
grade as us. Most importantly, we learned to
always walk on the right
side of the hallway. The
next time was the first
day of grade nine; also
known as the scariest day
to remember. Waking up
an hour earlier than normal, calling your friends
to confirm whose parents were driving whom,
trying on ten different
outfits (which looking
back were not as fashionable as we thought),
and standing outside the
class ten minutes early
in fear of being late. We
entered high school with
a group of friends that
we knew all through elementary school, and we
now leave with a small,
tighter group of friends.
But that’s the beauty
of high school. We can
get involved in football, basketball, robotics, photography, SADD,
SRC, and so much more
all to meet people with
the same interests as
us. We have been fortunate enough to have
been presented with so
many opportunities here
in the land of orange,
and these opportunities
have led to even bigger
ones. Although some of
us may never see each
other again, the friendships made here will be
a fond memory as we may
meet again someday, or
perhaps reminisce to our
children as we show them
our high school yearbooks. I’m not saying that
everyone on this stage
is best friends, because
that’s almost impossible.
However, through these
four years we have learned to put aside our differences and work together.
People may not remember one another by name
in years to come, but we
will remember the memories created and crazy
situations we were in
together.
A wise man once told
me, “You don’t have to
be the best, just do your
best.” Every accomplishment, no matter the magnitude, should be celebrated and recognized.
Goals are not only about
achieving them. They are
about setting your mind
on something, and doing
everything to make your
dream a reality. It’s all
about the journey, not
the prize! Sometimes you
accomplish your goals,
Rena Stamatinos
sometimes it’s not meant
to be. Remember, every
defeat gets you closer to
winning!
On this stage we have
people who have been
on the journey for various sports, academics,
and
extra-curricular
activities. We have prize
winners in photography,
drama, track and field,
electrical, cheerleading, basketball, mock
trial, and everything in
between. We have national champions and students who are accepted
into prestigious schools.
But more importantly,
on this stage there are
those who befriended
someone who felt alone,
defended someone who
was bullied, and tried
to make another’s day
a little brighter. This is
the promise of a better
future for us all.
We are all individuals. From Switzerland
to Springside, we make
up the graduating class
of 2014, and although
we celebrate our differences, we also have
so many similarities.
We all had to write the
dreaded research essay,
cat tests, and freeze outside during fire drills.
We all went through
the unforgettable crocs
phase, Bieber fever, and
trading Pokémon cards.
Today as we look out to
our family and friends,
we are all the same. We
all hold the same diploma, and whether we’ve
had a smooth ride or a
few bumps in the road
getting here, it no longer
matters. All that matters is that we have all
graduated high school
and rightfully earned our
diplomas.
We have been preparing for the moment
we would walk across
this stage no longer as
students, but as young
adults for thirteen years.
We have learnt so much
during these years that
will better prepare us
for what lies ahead of us
tomorrow. However, this
does not mean that we
are finished learning.
For each situation and
challenge that we may
face in our future, we
will look back at what
we have learnt in our
past and shape it into
whatever is appropriate.
Our years in school have
taught us to be punctual,
work as a team, strive to
do our best, and to not
be afraid to ask for help
when necessary.
For some of us,
Yorkton is only a holding
place before we move on
to somewhere bigger for
post-secondary schooling, travel, or work. For
others, Yorkton is our
future. Whatever path
we choose to take, we all
have the potential to be
successful and need to
recognize the community
for supporting us through
fundraising and other
opportunities.
As much as we don’t
like to admit it, none of
us could have made it
on this stage without our
parents, teachers, coaches, and friends. To our
parents and guardians,
thank you for giving us
unconditional love, holding our hands through
our successes and wiping
our tears during our difficulties. Each of us have
special memories that we
will cherish of how you
have become our role
models and impacted
our lives. You are a huge
reason why we have successfully made it this far
and your years of dragging us out of bed, gently
reminding us to bring out
our books for homework,
cheering us on from the
stands and from the audience, and of course looking for answers when
you got the call that your
son or daughter was not
present for a class today
are appreciated. I would
personally like to thank
my parents and brothers
for proofing my essays,
helping me study, coming to every one of my
dance
performances,
supporting my decision
to follow my dream, and
of course the loving facebook posts.
To our teachers, we
thank you for your support, patience, guidance,
and ultimately teaching
us the necessary skills
to become successful in
life. Know that we appreciate you accepting those
incomplete assignments,
skipping your lunch to
help us, marking essays
when you should have
been at your child’s
hockey game, and working tests around our busy
schedules. I will never
forget the mornings when
I headed to Mr. Clark’s
room for last minute
clarifications in calculus
and physics the day of the
test, and seeing a whole
line of students ahead of
me that beat me there.
Teachers, your years of
dedication to us does not
go unnoticed.
To
our
coaches,
you are our role models. Sometimes we see
you more than our own
families, and you have
shaped us into the people
we are today. You have
taught us to work hard
for what we want and
that winning isn’t everything… but it sure feels
good when you do!
Thank you to our
friends who have shared
our successes, comforted
us through our hardships,
laughed at our wipeouts,
and for always being one
text away.
Today as we get ready
to go our separate ways
and wonder when, or
if, we will ever meet up
again, I would like to
leave my fellow graduates with a stereotypical,
truly Canadian quote;
“You miss 100% of the
shots you don’t take”.
Take all the shots you
can because right now
we have countless opportunities, but in fifty years
you don’t want to regret
not taking one of those
shots. I don’t know what
to expect next year and
neither do you. It might
be a year of great successes, or a year of hardships. Don’t rush into the
next phase of your life
and whatever you try,
make sure that it is what
you want to do.
Congratulations 2014
graduates, we did it!
