Lisa Silagyi, Adult & Senior Programs Assistant In the year 1851, English botanical illustrator, Anna Atkins, perfected a way to capture the form and beauty of plants and flowers using nothing more than a special sheet of paper, sunlight and water. In this workshop, we'll explore these early photographic processes, and create a set of three botanical sunprints to enjoy. Sunprints can be framed, put in an album or gifted to someone special. Laura Spano Useful in edging, lace, and drop-stitch scarfs, we’ll also use single YO (yarn over) or multiple yarn overs for a wave effect. Students should know how to knit and purl before attending this class. Students need 10 inch straight knitting needles, (size 8 if using worsted weight yarn) or knitting needles as suggested by your yarn choice, and small scissors. Lisa Silagyi, Adult & Senior Programs Assistant New to digital photography? Looking to kick-start your photo creativity, or perhaps just brush up on technique? Come join our class in June. Each week we'll explore a theme through well-known photographs from MOPA's collection and then try out new tips and techniques in beautiful Balboa Park. Note: The most convenient and accessible parking closest to MOPA is located behind the Casa de Balboa and the Rubin H. Fleet Science Center. MOPA is located in the Casa de Balboa, main level, next to the SD History Center. Upon arrival, please check in with the front desk. Laura Spano This knitting technique is used to insure 'live' stitches for connecting two ends of a cowl project or three needle bind off at the shoulders of a sweater or knitting from both beginning and ending of a project to extend the length. Students should know how to knit and purl before attending this class. Students need straight or circular knitting needles, size 8 for worsted weight yarn, or knitting needles as suggested by your yarn choice. Bring a small pair of scissors, and scrap yarn of a color other than your project yarn. Technology advances so quickly, it’s hard to keep up. Whether you are looking to start with the basics, or want to learn how to send text messages and use Facebook so you can communicate with the grandkids, we have the class for you! See our Computer & Technology sections for more details. 18 OASIS Mission Valley Laura Spano Learn to knit and make a handy Kids welcome dandy project of your choosing: small purse, mug cup holder, phone holder, or a toy made from knitted dishcloth patterns. Lee’s last hopes - Antietam, Vicksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and the Wilderness places long since enshrined in the pages of history. Antietam, the bloodiest single day of battle in American history, resulted in Lincoln’s determination to find a fighting general. The fall of Vicksburg closed the Mississippi to the South. At Chancellorsville, Lee lost his most effective general to sheer fate and yet this was his most stunning victory. The three days at Gettysburg was where pride and an unquenchable faith in God’s blessing prevailed and turned the tide against the Confederacy. 37 OASIS Mission Valley Robert Fisher In 1096 CE, Pope Urban II called for a Holy War to reclaim from the Muslims the land where Jesus walked. In response to his declaration, tens of thousands of Europeans, lord and peasant alike, took up arms and marched to Jerusalem. From 1096 until 1291, a series of these campaigns, known as the Crusades, were launched to the Middle East. However, not all of the Crusaders headed to the Levant. Concurrent Holy Wars were also waged in Spain, France, and Eastern Europe. Furthermore, although the Crusades were originally called to combat Islam, the Crusaders also fought against pagans, Jews, heretics, and even other Christians. This course will examine this bizarre turn of events and explore how the Crusades left a legacy in the region which endures to this day. Ava Torre-Bueno, LCSW A look into Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice shows us her amazing observational skills through the lens of the mental wellness and mental illness of her characters. Learn the story of the greatest engineering work of its time and of the men and women, their triumphs and tragedies, the towers of monolithic stone and spun webs of steel to bring to life Washington Roebling’s Magnum Opus. Learn what it really took to make the dream a reality. History can prove that without the support of the Spanish Armada, the world's most powerful fleet in the 18th century, the colonies would have never won the war against England. But it was only the French that received the glory. How is that possible? Very simple. It wasn't in Spain's King Carlos III best interest to publicize the news that his country supported the freedom of the North American colonies since the idea of independence could dangerously spread to the Spanish colonies of Central and South America. Jesus’ talk will concentrate on how King Carlos III played a key role in defeating the English in the Americas and helping the 13 colonies gain independence. Philip J. Larry Solomon, PhD To this question, people often reply with the question, What do you mean by “God”? There are at least seven ways in which one may respond to this latter question. Four of these responses are historical and come from traditional perspectives. However, the paradigm may have shifted in the 21st century and three new perspectives have emerged. These newer views draw upon the fields of particle physics, complexity theory and genetics. We will explore and discuss all seven viewpoints. Peter Bolland, M.A. Twenty-five centuries ago an Indian teacher named Siddhartha Gautama courageously challenged the prevailing wisdom of his time through an arduous process of self-examination and experimentation. Known to us as the Buddha, or 'the awakened one', he spent his life teaching others a clear and simple method of breaking free from habitual, conditioned thinking and awakening into the here and now. We will examine the central hub of all Buddhist philosophy and practice-–the Four Noble Truths-– and bring these ancient, down-to-earth insights to bear on the everyday problems of our lives. In 1519, the Spanish adventurer Hernán Cortés arrived in the New World with a band of about 500 soldiers. He came to explore new lands, discover great riches, and convert the people to the Catholic faith. Deep inside the continent, he discovered an advanced civilization: the mighty Aztec Empire. In just two years, his tiny army conquered the Aztec Empire and seized their vast expanse of territory for the Spanish Crown. How Cortés and a few hundred conquistadors achieved this great feat remains a popular subject of speculation. This course will challenge the existing theories as to how Cortés was able to bring about the downfall of the Aztec Empire and introduce new theories. Mark Carlson, Historian, Writer and Artist Did you know that when Auguste Bartcholdi first envisioned the Statue of Liberty he wanted it to be a lighthouse? Did you realize that the U.S. government wanted nothing to do with it? And that when it finally arrived as a gift from the people of France to America there was no place to put it? Here is the story of how Lady Liberty came to be on tiny Bedlow’s Island in New York Harbor, how it was designed, built and finally shone its light on the New World. Alex Stewart, Sr Coordinator of Education Gabe Selak, Program Manager, San Diego History Center Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, is quite simply one of the most beloved children’s authors in the modern world. Family was an important part of Theodor Seuss Geisel’s life. The sing-song rhymes that his mother recited and the hours spent with his father at the zoo would later resurface in the illustrations and stories we have come to love. The genius of Dr. Seuss lies in his storybook illustrations made for children, while the underlying message of the story was for the adults. Saturday Class The distance from the Islamic world, state-imposed isolation, and the assimilating power of Chinese culture have combined to produce numerous versions of Islam within China. This lecture will differentiate China’s syncretic “old teachings” from “new teaching” movements that have arrived from the Middle East more recently. This lecture serves as a case study of the varieties of Islamic practice and theology, and illustrates a division in Islam between universal standardization and local vernacular and a wider Chinese cultural debate between local traditions and cosmopolitan modernities. Zen roots back to the teachings of the Buddha, a sixth century B.C.E. Indian reformer and spiritual teacher. What makes Zen unique and deeply appealing to people everywhere, is its practicality, its simplicity, and its willingness to challenge the authority of our institutionalized thinking. Zen is a paradox. At once ancient and modern, disciplined and liberal, deeply traditional and wildly irreverent. Join us as we uncover the practices and principles of this profoundly spiritual and eminently practical wisdom tradition. Alex Stewart, Sr Coordinator of Education Saturday Class Islam in China features several layers, each one tending to criticize those that came before it. This lecture will discuss the two most recent Muslim movements to arrive in China: the Salafiyya movement that advocates a strict, literal interpretation of Quran and Hadith, and the Tablighi Jama’at, which encourages all Muslims to embark on ascetic preaching journeys, behaving as they imagine the earliest Muslims did. Participants in these transnational movements critique elements of syncretism which is prevalent in many Chinese Muslim sects and aims to purify Islam by encouraging individual piety rather than any sort of coercive or political change. Darren Iammarino For millennia few subjects have inspired more fascination—sometimes even fear—than magic, secret societies, and the occult. This class will illuminate the truth behind these arcane topics and separate the myth from the reality. We will touch on the following provocative topics to name but a few: ancient mystery cults, was Jesus a magician, sinister yogis, Gnosticism, spells, divination, the Freemasons, Illuminati, exorcisms, and postmodern magic. Finally, we will attempt to understand why these topics still intrigue so many people around the world, even in a scientific age? James Bregante, SD Maritime Museum Docent Join native San Diegan, Jim Bregante, for this historical journey depicting the rich history and romance of our beautiful waterfront. This presentation will feature historical and family archive pictures depicting Jim’s family’s start in the fishing industry, his experiences on the waterfront as a youth, and life in Little Italy. Steven Cassedy, UCSD Literature Professor It would not be too much of an exaggeration to say that twentieth-century American popular culture stems from two minority groups: African-Americans and immigrant Jews. But Yiddish culture was more than just “shtick” and self-deprecating Jewish humor. It included a huge range of intellectual and artistic endeavors. In this session, we’ll look at some of the well-known and some of the lesser-known facets of Yiddish culture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. 43 OASIS Mission Valley Peter Bolland, M.A. Studying the ancient philosophies of India offers a fascinating opportunity to catch a glimpse into one of humanity’s boldest and most influential wisdom traditions. Gabe Selak, Program Manager, San Diego History Center An illustrated, historical tour of the alluring and refined amusement centers, piers and cultural communities that developed around Mission Beach, Ocean Beach, and Pacific Beach. Eleanor Ramrath Garner Eleanor Ramrath Garner will talk about her memoir in which she gives an unusual perspective into WWII. It is written from the point of view of an American-born teenager caught in Berlin, Germany with her family from 1939 to 1946. She desperately tried to hold onto her American identity as she felt herself pulled into the turbulent life unfoldingaround her. Eleanor vividly describes the struggle for survival of civilians in the Third Reich and the fears and anxieties of living under a dictatorship without freedom of speech and the press. Her family faced many separations, encounters with the Gestapo, bombings, hunger, the final fierce battle for Berlin, and then, the terrors of Soviet occupation and the daily attempts at survival in a totally decimated city. This is the story of every child caught in a war anywhere in the world. Larry Solomon, PhD We will explore the roots of terrorism, from the first century up to the present. What were the major terrorist groups in 2014? What havoc have they wreaked since 2001? For the Jihadist, what are the major issues driving terrorist behavior? We will look at nine steps that have been suggested to curb the development of terrorism. Finally, we will examine the mindset of Islam and the presumed cognitive functioning of an Islamic terrorist. Robert Fisher Following the slaughter and destruction of the First World War, no one could imagine the possibility of another one. Yet, the 'War to End All Wars' theory was disabused a mere quarter century later when extreme nationalism and militarism led to an even greater worldwide conflict. World War II brought even more worldwide desolation and killed three times as many civilians as military. Yet, as grim and terrible as this conflict was, it remains one of the most commemorated historical events in many countries. This course will cover both the headline and lesser known events of the war and examine the lasting significance of World War II. Outside research, family history, and personal experiences are welcome and encouraged. There are so many amazing places to visit in Southern California, but who wants to deal with the traffic? Mark Carlson The attack on Pearl Harbor is one of America’s darkest defeats. But were the Japanese able to attack with such success only because of their cunning and planning? Or was there American involvement in the attack? Were the 3,000 men and women killed that day betrayed by a government who wanted the U.S. to enter the war? The controversy has been fueled over the last 60 years and only now is another truth being revealed. Mary Kay Gardner, SDMA Docent In 1915 the Panama/California Exposition came to Balboa Park. Art works were a part of the Expo and in 1922 the SDMA was erected. In celebration of the 100 years since the Expo, we will take a virtual tour of the museum as it is today. The museum’s treasures encompass art from the Renaissance to the Contemporary, and from the Americas to Asia and Africa. Henry George, Engineer, Archaeologist and Geologist Humans are natural born migrants. Before becoming a settled people almost ten millennia ago, all humans were nomadic hunter gatherers. After establishing settled societies, humans resumed their wanderings. Beginning with the Exodus, this lecture will describe the major movements of humans in the Old World and then continue with the major migrations following the Age of Exploration in the 15th Century. The movement of peoples that began during this period continues to this day. The international as well as intra national migrations noted in this lecture have served to change the cultural face of our world. Mark Carlson, Historian, Writer and Artist Airplanes and motion pictures were born within a year of one another. In 100 years they have both risen from uncertain infancy to adolescence to robust maturity. While Hollywood’s actors and directors learned the art of making movies, the aircraft industry and pilots learned how to conquer the sky. In peace and war, prosperity and depression, the airplanes and motion pictures have become a part of American culture. Mark Carlson, author of the award-winning book Flying on Film – A Century of Aviation in the Movies 1912-2012, relates some of the more interesting and fun stories about when the airplane flew from the silver screen. Peter Bolland, M.A. In the early 19th century, Ralph Waldo Emerson bravely re-envisioned Christianity as a mystical tradition, rightly set beside the non-dualistic pantheism of India and the Idealism of the European Romantic movement. He saw Jesus not as a unique incarnation of God, but as a teacher of the divinity inherent in all of us. He believed that it was the breathtaking beauty of the natural world that most vividly reminded us of the immanence of the divine. Emerson’s essays shaped the continuing spiritual revolution of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. We will probe the core insights of Emerson’s work and explore them in the context of an emerging American spirituality. 45 OASIS Mission Valley Eugenia Constantinou, PhD, USD Alex Stewart, Sr Coordinator of Education Surprising issues of law are revealed in the famous story of a woman accused of adultery and brought to Jesus for judgment. His famous response foreshadows the development of rules of equity which are still applied in courts today. An attempt was being made to trap Jesus, but his reply results in true fairness and succeeds in making the accusers into judges, not of the woman, but of themselves. Saturday Class Why would citizens of a predominantly atheist nation join less than 1% of the population in practicing Islam? Dr. Stewart examines how several Chinese converts to Islam, or “new Muslims,” answer this question. Their stories do not neatly fit conventional sociological theories of religious conversion. Instead, they relate a gradual process that includes initial encounters with Islam, intensive study of the faith, conversion, and varying expressions of a new Muslim identity. Eugenia Constantinou, PhD, USD How did the Jewish leaders react to Christianity? What was the first conflict within the early Church? Why is the Christian lifestyle so different from Judaism? Bruno Leone, Fulbright Scholar The technology of violence associated with warfare took a monumental and deadly step upward with the introduction of gunpowder into European and world civilizations in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. This lecture will discuss the nature of society and warfare in the period prior to the introduction of gunpowder and explain precisely how and why this new method of warfare was destined to change the geopolitical situation for peoples throughout the world. Jonnie Wilson & Kathy Blavatt, O. B. Historical Society Funky, quirky, laid back … why is Ocean Beach so different from other San Diego beach communities and how did it get that way? Using archival photographs from the collection of the Ocean Beach Historical Society, historians Jonnie Wilson and Kathy Blavatt will retrace how “O. B.” developed from a popular - but unpopulated - picnicking spot in the 1880s to today’s family-oriented community in which beach cottages are treated as an endangered species worthy of protection. Copies of Ocean Beach, a recently published community history with over 200 vintage photographs, will be available for purchase. Eugenia Constantinou, PhD, USD Why didn’t the Roman emperors initially recognize any difference between Christians and Jews? Why was Nero the first Emperor to persecute the Christians? What did he do and how did this impact Christianity? 46 OASIS Mission Valley George Kirazian, Writer & Composer Eugenia Constantinou, PhD, USD The Bel Canto tradition (melodic operas with challenging vocal demands on lead singers, including graceful phrasing, runs, wide leaps and other vocal virtuosity), flowered in the first third of the 19th century and lasted in to the 1840s, reaching its glory in the operas of Bellini, Donizetti, and Rossini. We’ll sample three great works of the period by these composers and, also, listen to memorable selections by others. This tradition was a golden period within the Golden Age of Opera. For decades, these works were not frequently offered because of their difficult leading roles; however, the memorable performances of Callas, Sutherland, and Sills in the latter half of the last century, and in our own day, performances by Joyce DiDonato and Anna Netrebko, invite us to re-enter this great era. Here’s an opportunity to hear truly glorious singing! This first session will be an introduction and overview featuring CD excerpts. Eugenia Constantinou, PhD, USD George Kirazian, Writer & Composer What prompted the Roman Empire to begin a serious and long-lasting persecution of Christians near the end of the first century? How was this persecution different from Nero’s persecution in the middle of the first century? What is the purpose, authorship, and historical context of the Book of Revelation? Why is it written with such strange symbols? Bellini’s Norma was an immediate success when first performed (1831). Its pageantry and the classic beauty of its arias and ensembles are rife with great emotional power. Throughout the opera, specifically in the great aria, “Casta Diva” and in the very moving duet, “Mira, O Norma,” we hear a simple nobility that is as moving today as it was nearly 200 years ago. The demanding role of Norma has appealed to generations of dramatic sopranos and remains one of the great vocal challenges in all of opera. Of Bellini’s five major operas, Norma always remained the composer’s favorite: “If I were shipwrecked at sea, I would leave all the rest of my operas and try to save Norma …. ” Eugenia Constantinou, PhD, USD The bizarre symbols of the Book of Revelation had a specific meaning when the book was written. How can we know that and how do we know what they meant? For this lesson, we will uncover the meaning of some the most famous images of the Apocalypse. 47 OASIS Mission Valley Language & Literature George Kirazian, Writer & Composer Donizetti’s Gemma has only recently regained the popularity it had enjoyed immediately after its first production. It fell from the standard operatic repertoire because sopranos who sing Gemma are confronted with one of Opera’s most demanding roles, arguably the most difficult in the entire bel canto repertory. Another reason for its loss of popularity as one English critic wrote is the “improbable plot”. While it is true that there are plots and sub-plots, still many such dramas have given us truly glorious music. What makes Gemma really enjoyable is its lyric beauty, an almost uninterrupted flow of lovely melodies. Heather Chisholm-Chait Our discussions are stimulating and fun. George Kirazian, Writer & Composer Le Comte Ory is a total delight, a naughty romp filled with arias that show Rossini at his bubbly best. It doesn’t take long to realize that in this opera even the cast is having a great time. As he often did, Rossini recycles some of his own music, this time from an earlier opera, The Trip to Rheims. In this case, his choice is a good thing because this music, whether new or re-cycled, charms us right through to its final ensemble. The opera offers beauty, buffoonery, and ample evidence that Rossini was second only to Mozart in his ability to offer an evening of pure delight. In this fun, fastmoving class you will learn simple but effective tools to use that will boost motivation and enable you to get more done every day. 54 OASIS Mission Valley Rev. Dr. Roxie Hart Gwen Small The protective, defensive and judgmental part of us seems to be in charge most of the time. It is that aspect of us that reacts without thinking, gets in the way of our dreams and desires and talks us out of what we said we would do. It is both the self-effacing and the arrogant quality we display and it convinces us we're not good enough for anything and brings doubt. In fact, anything that has a hint of fear in it – and that's almost everything – is under the spell of our ego. Even the sweetest and most unassuming among us have got some 'ego' going on. Acknowledge the broad influence of the ego over our behavior in almost every situation and you'll be ready to take back your power. The goal is to tame this unruly, undependable and unpredictable part of ourselves so that it is no longer our master, but instead, our servant. Get ready to have some fun with yourself! Try a different approach to focusing your attention on and manifesting what you want. Create a “Vision Board,” also known as a dream board. A vision board is a poster with pictures and words that bring to mind your dreams, goals, and aspirations for the year (or a particular project). First you’ll experience a guided imagery to help you get in touch with your vision and then, we’ll get out the magazines, scissors and glue so you can create your vision board. No artistic talent required! We’ll discuss how to get the most positive impact from your creation. All materials will be provided; however, you are encouraged to bring personal photos or favorite magazines that depict people or experiences you want to incorporate into your personal vision board. Try on Buddhist teaching and learn to be in the present moment with reverence, kindness, compassion and curiosity. This is not about sitting on a pillow in the lotus position, most of us can't do that, but we can be out and about in our daily activities with a profound and heightened awareness. Mindfulness practice is calming and liberating. Ellen Goodwin What if you could find more time in your day to do the things you wanted to do instead of just what you have to do? What if you had more time for you? More time for fun? More time for projects? What if you could consistently check things off your to-do list? We all could do this and more, if we could just stop procrastinating and start moving. In this fun, fast-moving talk you will learn how to identify which of the four types of procrastination you are dealing with in any given situation, as well as the right tools and strategies for use in each case. Find out if an upper neck issue could be the cause of vertigo for you or someone you know. Dr. Justin Keffer, DC Many people believe that headaches just happen and their cause is unknown. Health care today focuses on treating the symptoms to cover up the pain. However, temporarily masking the pain does not correct the real problem and prevent headaches from recurring. There can be many triggers for headaches, but most result from neuro-vascular irritation caused by problems in the upper neck. The good news is that for many people this can be corrected. After several weeks of treatment, many patient’s headaches have disappeared. Find out how some people have been able to live free of headaches using a long-term alternative solution.
