Dear members, friends and supporters of San Diego OASIS,
We are committed to keeping life after 50 a fun adventure. You will find many exciting opportunities
to participate in classes, lectures, discussion groups, performances, travels, off-site adventures, and mentoring children

RELEASE AND HOLD HARMLESS AGREEMENT
(All Mission Valley participants must sign)
THE UNDERSIGNED HEREBY AFREES THAT:
In consideration for access to that certain shopping center commonly known as Westfield Mission Valley (the “Premises”) the undersigned,
on behalf of itself and its next of kin and anyone claiming through the undersigned, hereby releases, and forever discharges Westfield Property
Management LLC, and Westfield Mission Valley {PROPERTY OWNER} as well as its respective officers, directors, shareholders, agents, parents,
affiliates, servants, employees, predecessors, successors and assigns, tenants and licensees (collectively, the “Westfield Parties”) from any and all
damages, losses, injuries, claims, demands, liabilities, obligations, actions and causes whatsoever, whether known or unknown, whether liability be
direct or indirect, liquidated or unliquidated, whether absolute or contingent, foreseen or unforeseen, suspected or unsuspected, anticipated or
unanticipated, disclosed or undisclosed, and whether or not heretofore asserted, upon or by reason or as a result of the use of or access to the
Premises from and after the date hereof regardless of how such injury may rise, regardless of who is at fault or whose negligence causes such
injury, so long as such loss or damage is not caused by the gross negligence or willful misconduct of any of the Westfield Parties.
The undersigned shall defend, indemnify and hold the Westfield Parties harmless (with counsel reasonably satisfactory to the Westfield
Parties) from and against any and all claims, demands and causes of action of any third parties, and any costs (including reasonable attorney’s fees)
associated therewith that in any way are or are alleged to be caused by, or arise out of use of or access to the Premises from and after the date
hereof. The undersigned agrees to reimburse the Westfield Parties for any damage caused by the undersigned’s access to or operations within or
around the Premises.
The undersigned understands that the facts upon which this Release and Hold Harmless Agreement is made may hereafter turn out to be
other than or different from the facts now known or believed to be true and the undersigned accepts and assumes the risk of the facts to be different

extend to claims which the creditor does not know or suspect to exist in his or her favor at the time of executing the release, which if known by him or
her must have materially affected his settlement and with the debtor.” I similarly waive any and all rights or benefits conferred by any statute,
regulation, or principle of common law or civil law of the United States or any state, commonwealth, territory, or other jurisdiction thereof or of any
foreign country or other foreign jurisdiction which is similar, comparable or equivalent to §1542 of the California Civil Code.

Meditation is an approach to training

What you eat and drink as well as how much and how
often, can have a significant effect on your mood,
energy level, mental health, and ability to cope with
stress. Common imbalances connected to nutrition are
known to worsen mood and motivation. Emphasis will
be on dietary choices that support normal blood sugar
levels and supply the amino acids building blocks for
neurotransmitters, as well as the B-vitamins and
essential fats required for normal brain function. We

Dietary components can act on the human genome,
either directly or indirectly, to alter gene expression
and gene structure. The degree to which diet
influences the balance between health and disease
may depend on an individual's genetic makeup. Dietregulated genes likely play a role in the onset,
incidence, progression, and/or severity of chronic
diseases. This class will present a general
introduction to this rapidly evolving field, along with
practical dietary recommendations to maximize
health.

In 1096 CE, Pope Urban II called for a Holy War to
reclaim from the Muslims the land where Jesus
walked. In response to his declaration, tens of
thousands of Europeans, lord and peasant alike, took
up arms and marched to Jerusalem. From 1096 until
1291, a series of these campaigns, known as the
Crusades, were launched to the Middle East.
However, not all of the Crusaders headed to the
Levant. Concurrent Holy Wars were also waged in
Spain, France, and Eastern Europe. Furthermore,
although the Crusades were originally called to
combat Islam, the Crusaders also fought against
pagans, Jews, heretics, and even other Christians.

There are many fascinating forms of Buddhism thriving
in the world today, and perhaps the most fascinating of
all is Zen. Zen roots back to the teachings of the Buddha,
a sixth century B.C.E. Indian reformer and spiritual
teacher. What makes Zen unique and deeply appealing
to people everywhere, is its practicality, its simplicity,
and its willingness to challenge the authority of our
institutionalized thinking. Zen is a paradox. At once
ancient and modern, disciplined and liberal, deeply
traditional and wildly irreverent. Join us as we uncover
the practices and principles of this profoundly spiritual
and eminently practical wisdom tradition.

Islam in China features several layers,
each one tending to criticize those that came
before it. This lecture will discuss the two most
recent Muslim movements to arrive in China: the
Salafiyya movement that advocates a strict, literal
interpretation of Quran and Hadith, and the
Tablighi Jama’at, which encourages all Muslims to
embark on ascetic preaching journeys, behaving as
they imagine the earliest Muslims did. Participants
in these transnational movements critique elements
of syncretism which is prevalent in many Chinese
Muslim sects and aims to purify Islam by
encouraging individual piety rather than any sort of
coercive or political change.

For millennia few subjects have inspired more
fascination—sometimes even fear—than magic, secret
societies, and the occult. This class will illuminate the
truth behind these arcane topics and separate the myth
from the reality. We will touch on the following
provocative topics to name but a few: ancient mystery
cults, was Jesus a magician, sinister yogis, Gnosticism,
spells, divination, the Freemasons, Illuminati, exorcisms,
and postmodern magic. Finally, we will attempt to
understand why these topics still intrigue so many
people around the world, even in a scientific age?

It would not be too much of an exaggeration to say that
twentieth-century American popular culture stems from
two minority groups: African-Americans and immigrant
Jews. But Yiddish culture was more than just “shtick”

range of intellectual and artistic endeavors. In this

of the lesser-known facets of Yiddish culture in the late
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Eleanor Ramrath Garner
Eleanor Ramrath Garner will talk about her memoir
in which she gives an unusual perspective into
WWII. It is written from the point of view of an
American-born teenager caught in Berlin, Germany
with her family from 1939 to 1946. She desperately
tried to hold onto her American identity as she felt
herself pulled into the
turbulent life unfoldingaround
her. Eleanor vividly describes
the struggle for survival of
civilians in the Third Reich
and the fears and anxieties of
living under a dictatorship
without freedom of speech
and the press. Her family
faced many separations,
encounters with the Gestapo,
bombings, hunger, the final fierce
battle for Berlin, and then, the terrors of Soviet
occupation and the daily attempts at survival in a
totally decimated city. This is the story of every
child caught in a war anywhere in the world.

been suggested to curb the development of terrorism.
Finally, we will examine the mindset of Islam and the
presumed cognitive functioning of an Islamic terrorist.

Following the slaughter and destruction of the First
World War, no one could imagine the possibility of
another one. Yet, the 'War to End All Wars' theory was
disabused a mere quarter century later when extreme
nationalism and militarism led to an even greater
worldwide conflict. World War II brought even more
worldwide desolation and killed three times as many
civilians as military. Yet, as grim and terrible as this
conflict was, it remains one of the most commemorated
historical events in many countries. This course will
cover both the headline and lesser known events of the
war and examine the lasting significance of World War
II. Outside research, family history, and personal
experiences are welcome and encouraged.

The attack on Pearl Harbor is one of America’s darkest

Humans are natural born migrants. Before becoming a
settled people almost ten millennia ago, all humans were
nomadic hunter gatherers. After establishing settled
societies, humans resumed their wanderings. Beginning
with the Exodus, this lecture will describe the major
movements of humans in the Old World and then
continue with the major migrations following the Age of
Exploration in the 15th Century. The movement of
peoples that began during this period continues to this

Airplanes and motion pictures were born within a
year of one another. In 100 years they have both
risen from uncertain infancy to adolescence to
robust maturity. While Hollywood’s actors and
directors learned the art of making movies, the
aircraft industry and pilots learned how to conquer
the sky. In peace and war, prosperity and
depression, the airplanes and motion pictures have
become a part of American culture. Mark Carlson,

In the early 19th century, Ralph Waldo Emerson bravely
re-envisioned Christianity as a mystical tradition, rightly
set beside the non-dualistic pantheism of India and the
Idealism of the European Romantic movement. He saw
Jesus not as a unique incarnation of God, but as a teacher
of the divinity inherent in all of us. He believed that it was
the breathtaking beauty of the natural world that most
vividly reminded us of the immanence of the divine.
Emerson’s essays shaped the continuing spiritual
revolution of the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. We will
probe the core insights of Emerson’s work and explore
them in the context of an emerging American spirituality.

The Bel Canto tradition (melodic operas with
challenging vocal demands on lead singers,
including graceful phrasing, runs, wide leaps and
other vocal virtuosity), flowered in the first third of
the 19th century and lasted in to the 1840s,
reaching its glory in the operas of Bellini,
Donizetti, and Rossini. We’ll sample three great
works of the period by these composers and, also,
listen to memorable selections by others. This
tradition was a golden period within the Golden
Age of Opera. For decades, these works were not
frequently offered because of their difficult leading
roles; however, the memorable performances of
Callas, Sutherland, and Sills in the latter half of the
last century, and in our own day, performances by
Joyce DiDonato and Anna Netrebko, invite us to
re-enter this great era. Here’s an opportunity to
hear truly glorious singing! This first session will
be an introduction and overview featuring CD
excerpts.

What is the purpose, authorship, and historical
context of the Book of Revelation? Why is it
written with such strange symbols?
Bellini’s Norma was an immediate success when
first performed (1831). Its pageantry and the
classic beauty of its arias and ensembles are rife
with great emotional power. Throughout the opera,
specifically in the great aria, “Casta Diva” and in
the very moving duet, “Mira, O Norma,” we hear a
simple nobility that is as moving today as it was
nearly 200 years ago. The demanding role of
Norma has appealed to generations of dramatic
sopranos and remains one of the great vocal
challenges in all of opera. Of Bellini’s five major
operas, Norma always remained the composer’s
favorite: “If I were shipwrecked at sea, I would
leave all the rest of my operas and try to save
Norma …. ”

Donizetti’s Gemma has only recently regained the
popularity it had enjoyed immediately after its first
production. It fell from the standard operatic
repertoire because sopranos who sing Gemma are
confronted with one of Opera’s most demanding
roles, arguably the most difficult in the entire bel
canto repertory. Another reason for its loss of
popularity as one English critic wrote is the
“improbable plot”. While it is true that there are
plots and sub-plots, still many such dramas have
given us truly glorious music. What makes Gemma
really enjoyable is its lyric beauty, an almost
uninterrupted flow of lovely melodies.

Le Comte Ory is a total delight, a naughty romp
filled with arias that show Rossini at his bubbly
best. It doesn’t take long to realize that in this
opera even the cast is having a great time. As he
often did, Rossini recycles some of his own music,
this time from an earlier opera, The Trip to Rheims.
In this case, his choice is a good thing because this
music, whether new or re-cycled, charms us right
through to its final ensemble. The opera offers
beauty, buffoonery, and ample evidence that
Rossini was second only to Mozart in his ability to
offer an evening of pure delight.

We’ve all heard that life is a journey. The interesting
part is that we create that journey the way we perceive
life and the many lessons it brings us. In this class, we
will explore how we get in our own way. Also, we
will discuss some strategies to empower ourselves to
stop self-sabotaging behaviors and habits. When we
stop resisting and open ourselves up to what life is
giving us, we can experience the flow of life and
living.

Have you ever wondered why you think the way you
do, and why other people think, feel and act differently
from you? The enneagram identifies the basic fears
and desires of nine distinct and fundamentally different
personality types: learn what it is, how it can be used
for your personal development, how it can be helpful.
After a brief introduction, you will be able to take an
enneagram test and decide which three enneagram
characteristics best match you.

The protective, defensive and judgmental part of us
seems to be in charge most of the time. It is that aspect
of us that reacts without thinking, gets in the way of
our dreams and desires and talks us out of what we
said we would do. It is both the self-effacing and the
arrogant quality we display and it convinces us we're
not good enough for anything and brings doubt. In fact,
anything that has a hint of fear in it – and that's almost
everything – is under the spell of our ego. Even the
sweetest and most unassuming among us have got
some 'ego' going on. Acknowledge the broad influence
of the ego over our behavior in almost every situation
and you'll be ready to take back your power. The goal
is to tame this unruly, undependable and unpredictable
part of ourselves so that it is no longer our master, but
instead, our servant. Get ready to have some fun with
yourself!
Try a different approach to focusing your attention on
and manifesting what you want. Create a “Vision
Board,” also known as a dream board. A vision board
is a poster with pictures and words that bring to mind
your dreams, goals, and aspirations for the year (or a
particular project). First you’ll experience a guided
imagery to help you get in touch with your vision and
then, we’ll get out the magazines, scissors and glue so
you can create your vision board. No artistic talent
required! We’ll discuss how to get the most positive
impact from your creation. All materials will be
provided; however, you are encouraged to bring
personal photos or favorite magazines that depict
people or experiences you want to incorporate into
your personal vision board.

Discover how to be mindful in thought and action!
Try on Buddhist teaching and learn to be in the

Mindfulness practice is calming and liberating.

What if you could find more time in your day to do
the things you wanted to do instead of just what you

More time for fun? More time for projects? What if
you could consistently check things off your to-do

stop procrastinating and start moving. In this fun,
fast-moving talk you will learn how to identify which
of the four types of procrastination you are dealing
with in any given situation, as well as the right tools
and strategies for use in each case. Accomplish more
in your day, your week and your year by kicking
procrastination to the curb!

Document Management
Don Piller
633
Still losing documents in your computer’s vast
storage? Are pictures still showing up in strange
places on your system? Are you afraid to copy
pictures onto your computer’s hard drive?
Documents of all types are just files to your
computer. Those files have certain characteristics to
help you file and later find those files. Whether the
files exist on your computer, are contained in an
email or on a flash drive, we will go through
transferring them to other media. We will use some
of Microsoft’s built-in ‘Find’ functions to illustrate
how to locate information -- even if you only
remember part of the file name.
An operational understanding of your computer
will be helpful in following this class.

Best Browser for you
Don Piller
Don Piller
LibreOffice is a free alternative to Microsoft’s Office
suite of products. This free downloadable product is
compatible to the name brand. LibreOffice contains a
word processing, spread sheet and a graphical
presentation application. Each application can open
and save documents in either the Open Office Format
or any of Microsoft’s proprietary formats including
Office 2013. This class won’t go into detail on each
application, but each will be demonstrated and short
work sessions are included using each application.
There will be time for questions and answers if you
wish to discuss the product. A fundamental
knowledge of computers and their operation will be
helpful in understanding and following this class.
Many people believe that Chrome is the best browser
and Firefox is more secure than Internet Explorer.
While Internet Explorer by Microsoft is widely used,
other browsers do exist. This class will attempt to
destroy some myths, explain the basic tradeoffs and
educate you to allow you to make a more informed
decision about what browser is best for you. While we
will spend the bulk of the class on the Big 3 (Internet
Explorer, Firefox and Chrome), other browsers will
also be touched upon. Come spend a couple of fun
hours looking at the tools which consume much of
your computer time.

Balance and Vertigo
Dr. Justin Keffer, DC
Over the years, many patients have found relief from
vertigo (dizziness) following upper cervical
adjustments. Dr. Michael Burcon published a paper
showing elimination of vertigo in 291 out of 300
patients with Meniere’s disease. This result was
achieved using a specialized method called the Blair
Upper Cervical Technique. Most people are not
aware of this because there are less than 75 doctors
in the world that practice this technique. Find out if
an upper neck issue could be the cause of vertigo for
you or someone you know.
Dr. Justin Keffer, DC
Many people believe that headaches just happen and
their cause is unknown. Health care today focuses on
treating the symptoms to cover up the pain. However,
temporarily masking the pain does not correct the real
problem and prevent headaches from recurring. There
can be many triggers for headaches, but most result from
neuro-vascular irritation caused by problems in the
upper neck. The good news is that for many people this
can be corrected. After several weeks of treatment, many
patient’s headaches have disappeared. Find out how
some people have been able to live free of headaches
using a long-term alternative solution.

Excerpts from his humorous and inspirational book
Confessions of a Guide Dog – The Blonde Leading
the Blind by Mark Carlson and Musket. The author
tells the remarkable story of how they met, and their
travels and adventures together. This is your chance
to learn not only how a Guide Dog is trained but
how they do their job and, in Musket's case, made an
awful lot of people fall in love with him. He was not
your typical Guide Dog. Autographed copies of the
book will be available for purchase.

Patrick Anderson, Horticulturist
Succulents are the latest 'hot' trend in gardening, with
good reason. With their ease of culture and fabulous
variety of form, any gardener can create something
wonderful with these exciting plants. Whether
incorporated as accents in the garden or planted en
masse, horticulturist Patrick Anderson will
demonstrate how these drought-tolerant wonders can
become the stars of any garden design. Patrick is a
popular speaker on plants, garden history and garden
design, and his own succulent garden has appeared in
numerous magazines and books.

Sunnyland Annenberg Estate – Palm Springs
OASIS has a date to visit the fabulous Sunnylands
compound in Rancho Mirage – but there are only 35

peace and education. Designed in 1963 by architect A.
Quincy Jones, the 25,000 sq. ft. mid-century modern
home is well-known for its distinctive pink roof,
chosen to match the sunset glow of the nearby hills.
The Annenbergs hosted frequent visitors from the

which was often referred to as the “Camp David of the

L.A Historic Union Station Tour
It didn’t seem right to use a bus to get to Union Station
in Los Angeles for a tour of this historic train station!
So we’ll be arriving in style – on the Amtrak Pacific
Surfliner #567 train! Union Station in L.A. had it’s
75th anniversary celebration last year and was featured
in the May 2014 issue of Westways Magazine. The
photo-essay featured lots of beautiful pictures of the
tile and woodwork. L.A. Conservancy docents gladly
share the history and special features of this station that
made its grand debut in May 1939. The #567 train
leaves our downtown Santa Fe Depot at 8:24 a.m. You
can catch the same train in Oceanside at 9:25 a.m.
Arriving at Union Station at 11:18 a.m. It is an easy
walk across the street to historic Olvera Street which
resembles a vibrant Mexican marketplace. Browse
shops and have some lunch before returning to the
station for a 2 p.m. walking tour that requires you to be
walking or standing for the 90 minute duration. Our
return train, #582, departs the station at 4:10 p.m.

Getty Center Museum in Los Angeles
It may be hot in the city, but on a canyon ridge above
Los Angeles, the cool white pavilions of the Getty
Center Museum hold the promise of relief! A short
tram ride takes you from underground parking lot to
five modern structures housing the art treasures of the
J. Paul Getty Trust. The architect, Richard Meier, made
a bold statement with his design and the carefully
chosen building material – white travertine shipped
from Italian quarries. As you walk from one pavilion
to another, the paintings, sculptures and photographs
will delight. At this time, there are several specialized
exhibits featuring photography, French prints from the
era of Louis XIV, the Renaissance artist, Andre del
Sarto, and 50 significant bronzes of the Hellenistic
Age. Lunch is on your own at the onsite restaurants
and cafeterias.

Ambassadors
There are many ways to help us grow: volunteer by staffing an OASIS table at a
community fair, distribute catalogs to your local library or give one to a friend or
neighbor. We can use your helping hand!
CATCH Healthy Habits
Children in San Diego County need more exercise and to learn healthier eating
choices. Join a CATCH Healthy Habits volunteer team and enjoy the fun of
making that happen. The CATCH Healthy Habits program connects adults age 50+
with kids in grades K-5 using a hands-on, evidence-based curriculum. Typical
commitment is 1 hour a week for 8 weeks. Training and materials are provided.
New volunteer trainings:
 Mission Valley, 4/28, 10:15-12:15
Contact: Erica Macht
erica@SanDiegoOasis.org
 Escondido/North County: 6/3, 1:00-3:00
Contact: Becky Hofseth
bhofseth@oasisnet.org
Center Volunteers
When you become a volunteer at the Escondido or Mission Valley OASIS
center, you give back to the organization while helping your fellow members.
OASIS center volunteers are vital to our operations. You’ll greet members,
assist with class registration, answer questions and generally make the center a
cheerful and welcoming place!
Tutors
Volunteers in our tutoring program help children in grades K-4 build reading
skills, self-esteem and positive attitudes toward learning. Training and
materials are provided; you provide enthusiasm, patience and compassion.
Your role as a tutor is that of a friend and a role model. No teaching
experience is needed.
