Mr. Shahbaz is working as a Research Fellow in our Department. We appreciate his commendable achievement and his effort to bring laurels to our institution. Nikah Ceremony We congratulate Dr Shahbaz Gill on his nikah and wish him a blissful life filled with pleasure and contentment. May Allah shower His boundless blessings upon the couple. Mr Sami Lashari’s Wedding We extend our heartiest congratulations to Mr. Sami Lashari on his wedding and wish him a lifetime of everlasting happiness and contentment. May the blessings of Allah always be with the couple. CONGRATULATIONS once again! A Seminar on Self Branding Department of Management Sciences conducted a seminar in collaboration with Radius Academy for Corporate Training (R-ACT) on April 23, 2010 in the library. Mr. Furqan M. Mehmood was the distinguished speaker invited from professional corporate sector. Moreover, he is a business student’s trainer, an International business consultant and a successful entrepreneur in the USA. The topics covered in this particular workshop were as follows: 1) What are the imminent challenges of year 2010? 2) How to self brand in today's competitive world? 3) How to achieve and retain self-confidence? 4) How to become a successful entrepreneur in this contemporary era? After the seminar a talk show by Urdu Point TV was held which was hosted by Mr. Shahid Kaleem. In the talk show, both experts and students put across their views regarding self branding. The session was followed by the answer-question session in which students highlighted important issues and came up with relevant questions which were very well handled by the professionals. At the end, Dr. Ahmed Farooqi Acting Director along with Dr. Ahmed Kaleem Head of Department Management Sciences presented shield to the speaker and CEO Radius Academy for Corporate Training (R-ACT) and appreciated organizers’ efforts from both sides. Brand Wars Students of Applied marketing Strategies, under the supervision of Ms. Jawaria Fatima, organized an immensely interesting event called “Brand War”. This event was assigned as a project to the students of Applied Marketing Strategies to augment their practical capabilities. All groups of students presented their own brands and, thus, promoted them with self branding concept. Many local and international brands participated in the event such as Kansai, Warid, Wateen, Lipton, Tapal, R.C, Cocacola, Yummy, Sting(Pepsi), Lazur (Chatkhara) , Shark, Shezan and WiTribe. As there were 20 groups, this event was divided into two days: 20th and 23rd April. Brands were organized and brought into campus by students. The basic theme was to present brand through some promotional stuff. For that, students designed different games to increase participant interest. Such offers as “Buy 1 Get 1 Free”, “discounts” and “free sampling” were given to attract customers. Teams interacted with the students as if they were their customers in real life. They argued and tried to satisfy each customer by handling them with care. Such events should be arranged quite often as they give students a slice of real-life experience. MS Faculty Badminton Championship “Sports serve society by providing vivid examples of excellence.” George F. Will The importance of sports is invaluable at every stage of life as the constructive expenditure of energy that it brings out contributes to one's physical and mental well-being. Besides inculcating values such as dedication and discipline, it also provides us an escape from the hectic routine. Keeping in mind the importance of sports, The Department of Management Sciences organized MS Faculty Badminton Championship from 28-4-10 to 30-04-10. After a thrilling competition between Mr. Khurram Shahzad and Mr. Zafar-uz-zaman , Mr. Khurram shahzad won the match. Well done! Mr. Khurram Shahzad. A Business communication event “Rolla Rappa”. “To depict patriotism and positive impact of Pakistan”. This event was arranged by BBA-Batch 11 (3rd semester) on 12th May 2010, at 5:30 p.m. The head of management sciences department Dr. AHMAD KALEEM graced the occasion with his presence. The whole academic event was supervised by Ms. SADAF FATIMA. This event was divided in two parts. Students of one section showed the bleak picture through a play. The play highlighted the issues hindering the development of our beloved country. Most important among them were: Terrorist attacks. Unemployment. And corruption. Besides discussing these issues, the play also depicted how these problems can be overcome. The other section rather portrayed the positive image of Pakistan. A walk was arranged to show how people in different professions (doctor, lawyer, and teacher) are working with full dedication and how they devote their lives for the success of their motherland. A cultural aspect was also presented through a dress show to strengthen the cultural heritage of our country. The Head of Management Sciences Department appreciated the thought-provoking activity of the students and had a thorough discussion with them on current issues. Worthy faculty members of MS department also attended the show ; the show was highly appreciated by all visitors. One Day Workshop on “Developing Literature Review ” Management Science Department, COMSATS INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, Lahore and Institute of Research Promotion (IRP) jointly organized a one-day workshop on “Developing Literature Review” which was held on 10th of June, 2010 at COMSATS INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, Lahore. Dr Livia Holden was invited as a trainer. Dr Livia is an Assistant Professor at the department of Humanities and Social Sciences at LUMS in Lahore. She has a strong research background which is very helpful in guiding young researchers about conducting their research. The main focus of this workshop was to cater the interests of upcoming researchers and guide them about appropriate ways of developing their literature review. Whole training session was divided into following 6 modules: Importance of Literature Review for Research. How to search and find Information Sources which are relevant to our research? Evaluating information sources according to our Research Topic. Critical reading of the Literature Analyzing and synthesizing findings Writing and presenting Literature Review Dr Livia used Multimedia as teaching aid. Focus group discussions, interactive sessions, presentations from the participant and full involvement of the trainer during this workshop…… all above mentioned activities made this event a learning experience for participants. Participants learnt during this workshop about various ways of avoiding plagiarism in their researches. Most of the participants were faculty members and researchers in different higher education institutions like COMSATS, LUMS, Superior University, etc. COMSATS INSTITUTE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY, Lahore has again taken a lead in arranging scholarly gathering for creating and promoting research environment in education sector. This whole exercise was highly appreciated by Dr Shaukat Ali Hayat (Director). Dr Livia Holden was also a good trainer having a vast International education and research exposure. SEMINAR ON COMPENSATION MANAGEMENT Compensation Management is an advanced tool for salary planning, incentive and stock planning which enables Managers and Human Resource Departments to streamline their focal review process. The most competitive compensation system helps the organization to attract and sustain the best talent. This course (Compensation Management) is offered to MBA students specializing in Human Resource Management. When in future these students will be in market they will be facing different and complex issues related to compensation of human resources. Books and material in the class just guide them basic tools and techniques for solving compensation problems but how these tools and techniques are practically applied is a main thing which we want our students to learn during their course work. For effective learning of compensation management system a seminar “Practical Compensation Management” was arranged by Ms Binish Nauman on 11th May 2010. Guest speaker was Mr. Farrukh Sohail who is HR Manager in Safe Mix Concrete Products Limited. The speaker having vast knowledge in this field and possessing good communication skills was able to relate different theories of compensation to the real-life experiences. Safe Mix Concrete Products Limited is one of the biggest suppliers of construction material in Pakistan. Students learnt during the seminar that which type of compensation strategy i.e., Pay for Knowledge, merit pay, individual incentive plans, group incentive plans, sales based incentives, etc is suitable for such companies and why? Guest speaker was able to keep the interest of the audience through his strong communication skills and sense of humor. He aided his presentation with various animated cartoon stories highlighting the importance of competitive compensation system within the organizations. Faculty of Management Sciences Department and students of Compensation Management Course attended the seminar. In the end Dr Haq gave the shield to the Guest as souvenir and thanked on the behalf of our department for conducting such interactive and informative seminar for students. Youth Business Exhibition The event Youth Business Exhibition was assigned to the students of BBA Semester (I) as a final project of their course “Introduction to business”. The idea behind the project was to have the students experience the real world and get one step ahead of paper work and assumptions. As the title of the course suggests, the students are given basic knowledge regarding different aspects of business such as: business type, management, structure of the organization, marketing, finance etc. The students were instructed to select an area they are interested in getting into and practically apply all that they learnt in the course. Sun Glasses Flower shop Handicrafts shop Mobile accessories shop Gift shop Jeans shop Fast food shop Printing services Gaming Zone They started marketing their businesses a week before the Exhibition through pamphlets charts banners etc. Furthermore each business had a laptop displayed with their business advertisement running throughout the day. All of the business management was done by the students. Some of the businesses hired specialists to make their product also rented machinery like Gola & Slush shop, printing services, gaming zones etc. It was a one-day activity. The students thoroughly enjoyed displaying their businesses, selling their product and earning throughout the day. Students from all over campus visited them and enjoyed with them the whole day. In fact most of the businesses were sold out The Exhibition was also visited by the Director, Dr. Shaukat Hayat along with Director Acadamics Dr Azeem, Project Director Lancaster Dr. Farooqi and Head Of Department Management Sciences Dr. Ahmed Kaleem. The students briefed them about their businesses and the project idea. They got loads of appreciation for their effort from everyone. The event was organized by the students and supervised by their course teacher Ms. Fukaiha Kaka Khail. Following are some snapshots of the occasion: New Product Development Presentation Competition New Product Development Competition was held on 18th May 2010 between BBA Batch 9 A and BBA Bach 9 B. This competition was given to the students as a course project by their course instructor Ms. Faiza Hassan. Participants came up with brilliant ideas and marketing plans. The students were given the final project on New Product Development. Presentations were taken in 3 parts. Presentation I Topics Presented in the1st presentation: New Product /Services Idea, Idea generation, Idea Screening, Concept Development, Concept testing, Target Market, Competitive Analysis Presentation II Topics Presented in the 2nd presentation: Environmental Analysis, Consumer Trend, Spending Pattern, Product/Service, Price, New Product Pricing Strategy Final Presentation Final Presentation covered the topics as Product Idea, Product; Product/Service Levels, Features, design, Style, Branding, Logo, colors, brand name, Packaging, Labeling, After sale services Price; Costing, Customer perceived value, Profit margin, Internal/external marketing Considerations Placement; Channel members involve, Number of Channel levels, Availability, Specialty store/ Departmental store/ supermarket/Convenience Store/ Superstore, Promotion; Promotion Mix Tools to be used, Advertising/Personal Selling/Public Relations/Sales Promotion, Display of Advertisement: Commercial/Brochure/billboard/Printed Students came up with brilliant ideas as 1)FHIM Refrigerator/microwave oven, 2) Green Land instant Tea (3 in 1 Tea Bag), Buddy Butter (Flavored Butter), Nike Pulse, Ease Shopping Bag (canvas Bag to replace with polythene Bag), Google Screening Device Results: Product Idea, Google Screening Device Advertisement: Nike Pulse Logo/Name: Nike Pulse Presenter: Ali Ijaz PowerPoint Presentation & arrangements: Fruitamin Juice Seminar on Supply Chain and Logistics Management Ms. Faiza Hassan arranged a two-hour seminar on “Supply Chain and Logistics Management” on 18th May in A-Block. The eminent scholar Mr. Hassan Shah was invited as a guest speaker. Mr. Shah completed his MSc from Cranfield University, UK and MBA from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), Lahore and is currently associated with Punjab University, Lahore. The speaker shared valuable information and personal experiences with the participants. He divided participants in 6 teams and engaged them in an activity by assigning different tasks related to supply chain. The seminar started off with an introductory session followed by a healthy discussion and ended up with question answer session.
