Well, what about four? This season, four West Allegheny High School teams, or athletes, have taken their skills to the top of the leader boards, an unusual feat for a single season. This season touts three WPIAL section titles, a WPIAL championship, a WPIAL runnerup, a state champion, and a state semi-finalist. This shapes up to be an awesome fall sports season here in Indian country. :$92//(<%$//7($05(3($76:3,$/6 Last year the West Allegheny girls volleyball team had only three seniors on PAGE PHOTOS THIS SUBMITTED their roster. They literally flew under the radar, with first-year head coach Lisa Pyrdek at the helm, to capture the school’s first WPIAL championship. One of those seniors was All-State performer Michelle Walker, who is now at Pitt on scholarship. The Indians captured the State Championship in 2006 but they had never won the WPIAL title before. This past fall the six seniors that returned from the 2008 WPIAL championship team team faced the added pressure of being the experienced defending champions. The net seemed higher on their side of the court, so to speak. Seniors Chelsea Katkich and Korin Wengryn and junior Carissa Miara responded to the challenge with WPIAL All-Star performances that presented Coach Pyrdek with her second WPIAL title in her second year of coaching the Indians. Other seniors on the squad were Haly Hanzar, Libero Alexis Seabold, Angela Devereaux, and Jaimie Borchart. Junior Katelinn Long and sophomores Morgan Seabold and Jaclyn Placha were also in the starting rotation. The Lady Indians went into the play-offs as section co-champs with South Fayette with a 10-1 record. Their only loss was to the Lady Lions in the third match of the season. WA reversed that outcome later and tied with South Fayette for the section title. With their 10-1 record and number one ranking the Indians went into the play-offs as the top seed. No flying under the radar this time around. Not to worry. “We had a lot of good players back from last year. They knew what it takes to win a match of this importance and didn’t let the pressure of being the defending champion get to them,” said Coach Pyrdek. WA did not lose a single game while shutting out Beaver, Derry Area, and Blackhawk to reach the title game against Freeport. Middle hitter Korin Wengryn had 14 kills and 8 blocks as WA swept Freeport 3-0 to win the championship. “We had a lot of extra pressure on us being the defending champs. We just made sure we worked hard every day,” said Carissa Miara. Next up was Meadville in a preliminary round of the PIAA. The Indians won 3-0 to register their fifth consecutive play-off shut out. But their streak was broken when they lost to Marion Mercer 2-1 on November 13 at York in PIAA Pool Play. They were defeated 2-1 again by Archbiship Carroll in the double elimination tournament before winning a consolation match over Phillipsburg Osceola to end their season as section co-champions and WPIAL champions with a 16-3-1 record. *2/)(5%52:1,1*:,163,$$7,7/( Sophomores are not supposed to win the state high school golf championship. It had been 25 years since a sophomore won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association title. Then along came 15-year-old West Allegheny sophomore Garrett Browning to win the PIAA title at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York on October 29. $OOHJKHQ\:HVW0DJD]LQH'HFHPEHU 6SRUWV ! E R I A N I D R O A R T X E 6WDUV there. “You have to be long to score at our home course, especially from the back tees,” says the WA sophomore, who hits the driver far enough that he can reach the greens in two of Quicksilver’s challenging par fives. Browning’s length off the tee is a distinct advantage no matter where or who he is playing. “About 95% of the time I outdrive the kids I am playing with or against. That means I use shorter irons for my approaches. After that it’s all about putting,” says Garrett. There is an age old golf adage that you drive for show and putt for dough. Garrett heartily agrees. He considers himself a work in progress around the greens. “I’m a pretty good putter but I have to continue to get better at it,” says Garrett. As a freshman last year Garrett didn’t qualify for the WPIALs. This past fall he was the medalist at the sectionals, third at the WPIALs, and ninth at the regionals to qualify for the States. The State championship is a two-day, 36-hole event. Even in fair weather conditions, Garrett fired a three under par 69 on the first day. Dreary rainy weather conditions greeted the golfers on the second day and the scores soared. Garrett shot 40 on the front side but was still in contention. He kept his poise and came back to shoot a one under 35 on the back despite worsening conditions. His 144 total was good enough to win the title by a stroke over Lower Marion’s Greg Jarmas. Although Mike Philips won back-to-back WPIAL championships in 1970 and 1971, Garrett is the first-ever West Allegheny golfer to win the state championship. PHOTO SUBMITTED Garrett and his 12-year-old brother, Connor, are the sons of Sherri and Dave Browning of Westbury. Garrett credits his parents and his coaches for instilling in him the moxie that it takes to become a golf champion -- things like practice and patience and playing in all kinds of weather conditions. “I try to go into every game or match with the same attitude, that is to play one hole at a time and shoot as low as I can,” said Garrett. The pursuit of attaining that low score every time while maintaining his poise is foremost in the success he has had on the golf course so far in his blossoming career. Garrett began to play before he was ten years old and has since competed in U.S. Junior Tournaments and other events in his age bracket locally and throughout the Eastern United States. This past summer he played in the U.S. Junior PGA Championships held in Cincinnati at the TPC Riversbend Course. He has already qualified to compete next summer in national and international AGA events. “I like golf because it is an individual sport. In tournament competition you are out there responsible for every shot. Even in high school section play where you match up and go one-onone with another guy it’s all on you,” says the state champion, who also plays basketball. With all that Garrett has accomplished in golf it is hard to believe that he is only a sophomore in high school. “When he’s not on the course or basketball court he’s into rap music,” says his dad, Dave. WA’s home course is Quicksilver Golf Club, a renowned facility that once hosted a Senior PGA tour event on an annual basis. It is recognized as one of the longest, most difficult courses in this part of the country. No team of their predecessors had ever before advanced that far in the play-offs. The Indians went into the post season as section 5AA champions with a 16-1-1 record. They motored their way to the section title by outscoring their opponents 78-12 in the regular season. It was the first section title for the Indians since 1991. Most of the Indian scoring in the regular season was done by front liners Tyler Graziani, Corey Cleric, Nick Kolarac, and Scott Stawiarski. All were in double figures in scoring for the year. Graziani, only a sophomore, led the team in goal scoring with 25 during the regular season despite sharing time with senior Scott Stawiarski who started in the rotation. Coach Kevin Amos kept both players fresh by inserting Graziani as often as was needed. Five Indians were on the all WPIAL team. Graziani was joined by Andy Jackson, Kolarac, Cleric, and Bryan McMillan (honorable mention). Jackson, Kolarac, Cleric, Graziani and McMillan were on the All Section team. Ryan Capo and Tony Monaco earned honorable mention recognition. The Indians defeated Belle Vernon 4-1 in the WPIAL first round then squeezed by center 2-1 in the quarter finals. The Hampton Talbots put up a road block in the semi-finals and WA’s play-off run came to a halt in a shootout won by the Talbots, 3-2. The Indians rebounded from that overtime loss to defeat Chartiers Valley in the consolation game to capture third place and qualify for the States. In the PIAA play-offs for the first time, the Indians got by Slippery Rock 2-1 in the first round. They faced Hampton again in the quarter-finals. Put junior Mike Caputo at the top of that list, or any other list for that matter. His numbers this year are out of this world and still climbing. He has led the Indians to the WPIAL championship game for the first time since 2001. Heading into the Indians’ WPIAL semi-final match-up with Thomas Jefferson on November 20, Caputo had rushed for 1,951 yards on 267 attempts and scored 27 touchdowns. Add to the Indians’ ground game the efficiency of their passing attack engineered by quarterback Jared Buck and it makes Caputo’s running even more effective. Buck threw for 202 yards in the Tribe’s quarterfinal 30-7 victory over New Castle. Prior to the semi-finals he had thrown just one interception all season while throwing for 1,043 yards and 13 touchdowns. His favorite targets were Ben Simmen, 23 catches for 359 yards, and Aaron McKinney, 15 catches for 334 yards. Mike Cherokee added 334 yards rushing to the Indian attack. Thomas Jefferson came into the semi-finals as the three-time defending WPIAL champions with an 11-0 record. The Jaguars were on a 48-game winning streak against WPIAL teams with 26 straight wins overall. They were ranked number one in the WPIAL and the PIAA all season long. The Indians were 9-2 and ranked 4th in the WPIAL. The two teams had won seven of the last ten WPIAL championships between them with TJ winning four of the past five. It was the Indians, though, that headed to Heinz Field for the title game this year. WA snapped the Jaguars’ win streak with a 28-21 victory in a thriller at Chartiers Valley stadium. Caputo passed the 2,000-yard season rushing mark by running for 257. He had touchdown runs of 1 and 96 yards. He also scored on a 97-yard kickoff return. Receiver Mitch Posel teamed with Buck on a 12-yard pass for the Indians’ other touchdown. “He’s not that fast but he’s quick. He’s not that big but he’s strong. It’s his ability to make people miss and avoid tackles that sets him apart,” said TJ Coach Bill Cherpic. Caputo runs behind a mostly senior offensive line that doesn’t care about individual credit, said Indian Coach Bob Palko. “Tim Johnson and Alex Zupanovich are the glue that molds us to what we’ve been doing. Sam Bailey and Nate Bell, who also plays defense, are our other senior offensive linemen,” said Coach Palko. “These guys have all bought into the team concept,” said Palko, as the Indians prepared to meet Hopewell in the finals at Heinz Field on November 27. the years at West Allegheny. ABOVE: In an effort to help increase survival rates for people who suffer from sudden cardiac arrest, Ohio Valley General Hospital has donated an automated external defibrillator to the #1 Cochran Automotive of Robinson and the Sewickley Valley YMCA. Through the use of automated external defibrillators (AED), the risk of survival following cardiac arrest drastically increases. About the size of a laptop computer, an AED is a computerized device that analyzes the heart rhythm and prompts a rescuer to deliver an electrical shock if needed. When AEDs are used in conjunction with CPR, they can increase cardiac arrest survival rates between 50 and 80 percent. They are designed so that a person with no medical experience can operate the device. Rob Cochran, President and CEO of #1 Cochran, explained that this device will be a great addition to the dealership. “We’re grateful to have this life-saving device in our showroom and we appreciate Ohio Valley for their kind contribution.” Pictured, Rob Cochran, President and CEO of #1 Cochran; James Morgan, Service Manager; William Provenzano, President and CEO of Ohio Valley General Hospital, by the donated defibrillator in the #1 Cochran Robinson showroom. 1(('720$.($63(&,$/ $11281&(0(17"6(//$1,7(0" :$7&+,1*<285%8'*(7"7+(6( 63$&(6$5(-867 ($&+ 0$,/(')5((72$//+286(6+2/'6,1 ),1'/$<1257+)$<(77(2$.'$/( 6785*(21$1'3$572)0F'21$/'&$// 'HFHPEHU$OOHJKHQ\:HVW0DJD]LQH .,'6 $'8/76 'HFHPEHU²$$53'5,9(56$)(7<&/$66 %HFDXVHZHKDGVRPDQ\UHTXHVWVDQRWKHU$$53'ULYHU6DIHW\&ODVVKDVEHHQ VFKHGXOHG$$53PHPEHUVZLWKFDUGQRWDQ$$53PHPEHUEULQJDEDJ OXQFKEHYHUDJHSURYLGHGUHJLVWUDWLRQLVUHTXLUHG :HGQHVGD\'HFHPEHU&5$)7$67,&SPDOVR :HGQHVGD\-DQXDU\.LGVRIDOODJHVOLWWOHRQHVZLWKDSDUHQWDUHLQYLWHG WRGURSLQIRUDFUD]\FUDIW\FUHDWLRQ*OLWWHUJOXHDQGORWVWRGR'RQ·WSXWRQ \RXU6XQGD\EHVWEHFDXVHZH·UHVXUHWRPDNHDPHVV5HJLVWHURQOLQHRUDWWKH OLEUDU\·VFLUFXODWLRQGHVN 'HFHPEHU&22.,((;&+$1*(DP²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·VFLUFXODWLRQ GHVN 6WRU\7LPHV 6HHWKHGDWHVDQGWLPHVEHORZ5HJLVWHURQOLQHRUDWWKHOLEUDU\·VFLUFXODWLRQGHVN 0RQGD\V-DQXDU\)HEUXDU\DP029(29(5 027+(5*226(:HZHOFRPHOLWWOHRQHVPRQWKVZLWKDSDUHQWRU FDUHJLYHU,I\RXKDYHD\RXQJHUFKLOGIHHOIUHHWRJLYHXVDWU\IRU PLQXWHVRIVRQJVERRNVDQGUK\PHVJXDUDQWHHGWRJHW\RXDQG\RXU EDE\PRYLQJDQGJURRYLQJ 0RQGD\V-DQXDU\)HEUXDU\DPSP 72''/(57$/(67RGGOHU7DOHVLVDPLQXWHSURJUDPGHVLJQHGIRU FKLOGUHQIURP\HDUVDQGWKHLUSDUHQWRUFDUHJLYHU&KLOGUHQZLOO HQMR\ILQJHUSOD\VVWRULHVFUDIWVDQGIXQ 7XHVGD\-DQXDU\)HEUXDU\SP35(..$3(56 3UH..DSHUVLVDQKRXUORQJSURJUDPGHVLJQHGWRKHOSSUHVFKRROHUV EHFRPHEHWWHUSUHSDUHGWRIDFHWKHFKDOOHQJHVDQGH[FLWHPHQWRI NLQGHUJDUWHQ5HJLVWHURQOLQHRUDWWKHOLEUDU\·VFLUFXODWLRQGHVN :HGQHVGD\'HFHPEHU5((/725($/SP3UHVFKRRODQGXS .LGIOLFNVDQGIXQDFWLYLWLHVWRZKLOHDZD\WKHWLPH6RPHWKLQJIXQDQGIDQFLIXOIRU HDFKPRQWKIRUNLGVDQGNLGVDWKHDUW 7XHVGD\-DQXDU\SP6283621$JHVDQGXSOLWWOH RQHVZLWKDSDUHQWSOHDVH2KWKHZHDWKHURXWVLGHLVIULJKWIXO«EXWLQVLGHZH·UH FHOHEUDWLQJ1DWLRQDO6RXS0RQWKZLWKVWRULHVFUDIWVDQGIRRGWKDWZLOOZDUPXV IURPWKHLQVLGHRXW'RQ·WPLVVLW5HJLVWHURQOLQHRUDWWKHOLEUDU\·VFLUFXODWLRQGHVN 7((16 &RPLQJLQ-DQXDU\7HHQ5HDGD7KRQ)XQN\-XQNFUDIW*DPLQJDQGPRUH:DWFK WKHOLEUDU\:HEVLWHIRUGD\VWLPHVDQGWRUHJLVWHU &20,1*837XHVGD\-DQXDU\SP/LEUDU\.LG$GYHQWXUHV ',$5<RID:,03<.,':HGQHVGD\-DQXDU\SP3$57</,.($ 3,*(216DWXUGD\-DQXDU\SP:(·5(2))726((7+(:,=$5' PHOTO SUBMITTED 0HHWfWKH :,6(f:$/.(56 ABOVE: Front, Lauretta Roberts, Lorraine Warner, and Evelyn Kohm; Center, Doris Scott, Stephen Auman, Frank Roberts, Carrie Marr, Theresa Miller, Bill Miller, Richard Warner, Delnora Auman, Bill Kohm; Back, Mary Ann Parente, Rebecca Roedler, and Cindi Leszunov. 07KDPSP)ULDPSP6DWDPSP 6WHXEHQYLOOH3LNH2DNGDOH3$ ZZZZHVWHUQDOOHJKHQ\OLEUDU\RUJ 3OHDVHUHJLVWHURQWKHOLEUDU\·V:HEVLWHRUDWWKHOLEUDU\·V&LUFXODWLRQ'HVN IRUDOOSURJUDPV $OOHJKHQ\:HVW0DJD]LQH'HFHPEHU LEFT: Let’s go for a walk. A WISE WALK. Since the middle of September, senior citizens and future seniors looking for an easy and fun exercise experience walked around the gym in the community center. The Wise Walk program, sponsored by the Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA), in partnership with AARP and the Highmark PALS (People Able to Lend Support), provided everyone with a pedometer, T-shirt, and healthy snacks. Participants kept track of their steps for the week and then reported the total each Friday. Western Allegheny Community Library was one of 21 libraries in the county that participated in Wise Walk. The North Fayette Recreation Department provided the gym and support for the program. Tammy, wellness director and instructor from Body Systems Fitness, showed the group how to stretch. About 15 people came each Friday to walk. Another session will begin sometime in January. Call the library for details. Kudos to the four couples came regularly - Evelyn and Bob Komm, Theresa and Bill Miller, Lauretta and Frank Roberts, and Lorraine and Richard Warner. BY PAT JENNETTE PHOTOS SUBMITTED P eru is located on South America’s central Pacific coast. The world’s twentieth-largest nation, it borders Bolivia, Brazil, and Chile to the east and south, and Colombia and Ecuador to the north. The Peruvian population is extremely young with more than fifty percent of its population below the age of thirty. Two of those young adults -- Enrique Bernardo and Giuliana Contreras -- make their home here in Pittsburgh. Both of them are musicians and share their musical talents with two churches here in the West Allegheny neighborhood. Enrique came to Pittsburgh in 2004 after completing five years of study at the National Conservatory of Music in Peru, followed by completing his bachelor’s degree in music from the College of Charleston in South Carolina. He completed a Master’s of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. He stayed in the city after receiving his degree while attaining the Artist Diploma Program at Duquesne University, which he completed last year. While studying at CMU, Enrique saw an ad on the Internet posted by Hebron Presbyterian Church in Clinton seeking a musician for their Sunday services. He interviewed for the job and started shortly thereafter. Born in Lima, Peru, in 1980, Enrique said that he wanted to be a musician from the time he was 13. “I joined a group in my school; I enjoyed playing the keyboards, and at some point I realized I wanted to be a concert pianist,” he recalls. However, becoming a pianist in Peru is not common. Enrique said that there is not much in the way of classical music opportunities in Peru, particularly outside of his home city of Lima. “When I used to live in Huancayo, it was very difficult to pursue music because at that time there were no pianos in the city. In fact, I went back to Huancayo in 2003 to do a piano recital and I was never able to find a grand piano,” he explains. Just a few miles away from Hebron in Imperial, Giuliana Contreras is the organist and pianist for Valley Presbyterian Church, where she is also a member of the church’s praise band. The two musicians knew each other before either one of them began sharing their musical talents here in the community. Enrique said that they studied at some point with the same music teacher in Lima, Enrique Graf. Giuliana added that the two also participated together in piano festivals, concerts, and competitions. “We have known each other for more than 15 years, actually,” Enrique said, noting that it is nice to have someone from his home country right here in the city. “He has been of great help and encouragement to me,” Giuliana said of Enrique. Giuliana, who also hails from Lima, is currently studying music on a full scholarship at Carnegie Mellon University, where she is a second year graduate student in music-piano performance. She started playing the piano at age six, surrounded by a family that either listened to or played classical music. She soon entered the National Conservatory of Music in Lima where she studied for 12 years before coming to the United States in 2002, particularly because, she said, “Studying classical music in Peru was and still is very difficult.” 6XQGD\'HFHPEHUSP Giuliana discovered Valley Church in September ³&KULVWPDV&KRLU&DQWDWD´IHDWXULQJORFDO 2008 when she received a forwarded e-mail from the FKXUFKFKRLUV church seeking a musician. “Valley Church and Pastor Jeri-Lynne have become 6XQGD\)HEUXDU\SP ³6W9DOHQWLQH¶V&HOHEUDWLRQ6HOHFWLRQVRI my family ever since,” she said. “They have opened their doors to me and even welcomed me for /RYHO\3LHFHVIRUWKH+HDUW´ holidays at their homes.” When not sharing her musical talents at Valley or 6XQGD\0DUFKSP ³*ROGEHUJ9DULDWLRQV$&RUQHUVWRQHRIWKH studying, Giuliana also keeps busy using her musical talents. This past summer she performed with two 3LDQR/LWHUDWXUH´ friends from CMU the Beethoven’s Triple Concerto for piano, violin, and cello with symphony 6XQGD\$SULO7LPH7%$ WK$QQLYHUVDU\&HOHEUDWLRQRI+HEURQ orchestras in Colombia and Peru. Enrique said he is now taking voice lessons at the $OOFRQFHUWVDUHIUHHDQGDUHRSHQWRWKHSXEOLF $IUHHZLOORIIHULQJZLOOEHDFFHSWHG3URFHHGV Cleveland Institute of Music, where he travels once a week. This fall, he was involved in the opera ZLOOEHQHILWWKH:HVW$OOHJKHQ\)RRG3DQWU\ production with the Cleveland Institute of Music Opera Theatre. He is also busy as the music director of the Latin American Choir of Pittsburgh. In upcoming months, Enrique said he will be quite busy with numerous musical commitments. Among them are the Pittsburgh Opera as part of the chorus in Evteny Oneguin and Falstaff, performances in Steubenville, Clarion, and Pittsburgh, and a concert series that is dear to his heart -- Hebron’s Concerts in the Country Series, which debuted last month. A series of concerts (see box, above), will be presented under the direction of Enrique. As he says, the concerts are his gift to Hebron. “I mentioned the idea of a grand piano a few years back, but nothing came out of it. Earlier this year, I mentioned it again, and got a great response, so we ended up buying a new piano. The people from the church have been very supportive, so we put this concert series together.” The series will conclude in April with the 200th anniversary celebration of Hebron Church. After months of work, the chamber will receive its biggest facelift within its past 105 years of existence. “Over the years the chamber in the Pittsburgh Airport Area has become the second largest chamber in the Pittsburgh region,” noted committee chairman Dan Murphy. “We wanted to leverage the fact that we are the host chamber in the area that welcomes new businesses into the Pittsburgh region and beyond.” Many Pittsburghers are unaware that the chamber covers 31 communities surrounding $LUFUDIW0DQDJHPHQW*URXS,QF 1HOOR&RQVWUXFWLRQ&RPSDQ\ (DJOH&RQVWUXFWLRQ5HPHGLDWLRQ//& )ODEHJ6RODU86&RUSRUDWLRQ +DUPRQ\5LGJH(YHQWV&DWHULQJ//& 6%7KRPDV$VVRFLDWHV//& +RZDUG+DQQD5HDO(VWDWH6HUYLFHV 0LFKDHO0LOOHU ,]DJJ(QHUJ\ 86:RPHQ¶V2SHQ )RUG%XVLQHVV0DFKLQHV,QF &KDU:HVW&RXQFLORI*RYHUQPHQWV &LYLO(QYLURQPHQWDO&RQVXOWDQWV,QF '(&(0%(5 Western Allegheny County, even including some -LQJOHIHVW0RQWRXU+HLJKWV&RXQWU\&OXE of Beaver County. These veterans are telling the students, in their own words, what it was like to serve in the military during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and peacetime. The project commenced at a Veteran’s Breakfast held on November 18 in the high school cafeteria where about 30 of the 47 veterans were able to attend. The project was the brainchild of high school English teacher Jessica Conforti. She said she was inspired to do the project by her father who served in the Air Force during peacetime. She added that from a young age he taught her about patriotism and the importance of honoring veterans. The West Allegheny Foundation thought the idea so valuable that it awarded a grant to Jessica for her to undertake the project. Called the “Voices for Veterans” biography project, the students will continue to correspond with their veteran “partner” thoughout the year, collecting memorabilia, taking notes, asking questions, and compiling biographies. Jessica said the students will also research the period of war time that their veteran served in so that they can have a better understanding of what happened then, giving them a deeper perspective of what veterans experienced while serving the country. For some of the veterans, like Dan Cronin of Wexford, it’s a chance to share with his grandson, Nicholas, who is one of the students, his experiences in World War II when he served in the Navy. “This is a wonderful opportunity to tell him what I experienced in the war and have him write it down for keeping,” Dan said. Findlay Township resident Fran Dugo told of how he was with the U.S. Air Corps from 1943-45. He worked on the armor with the 452nd Bomb Group. “I grew up quickly then at the age of 18 when the B17 plane that I worked with got shot down,” TOP: Keith Kropf shares his story with student Levi Seifert. He’s proud that his youngest son, Todd Dugo, has served for 24 years with the military, and currently serves at Maxwell Air Force Base. Todd is a West Allegheny alumnus. Student Marina Lauff is working with Fran on his biography. Kenneth Elliott of Walden Woods, who is being interviewed by Rachel Goldstrom, served in the Army in Vietnam from 197071. He was a secret agent with top secret clearances, responsible for locating the enemy and relaying the information back to the base. Findlay resident Keith Kropf, who served in the Army from 1965-68 in Vietnam, was part of the Tet offensive in 1968. The Tet offensive was a military campaign during the Vietnam War that began on January 31, 1968. The purpose of the offensive was to strike military and civilian command and control centers throughout South Vietnam and to spark a general uprising among the population that would then topple the Saigon government, thus ending the war in a single blow. Student Levi Seifert is telling Keith’s story. Several West Allegheny current and past employees are also part of the project, including Paul DeBor, a former reading teacher at Wilson Elementary who served in the Vietnam War, and Stewart Morgan, who taught for 43 years at West Allegheny. He is a World War II veteran who served with Patton’s Army in the Battle of the Bulge and was the chaplain’s assistant throughout his entire service time. Once the research is complete, the students will compile their writings, memorabilia, and photos from the vets into scrapbooks. At the end of the school year near Memorial Day, the students will host a reception for the veterans and present them with a copy of their biography. A copy will also be kept in the school library for future reference by students in years to come. $OOHJKHQ\:HVW0DJD]LQH'HFHPEHU &RPPXQLW\&DUGV ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS, ORGANIZATION, PRODUCT, OR SERVICE HERE! The two facilities are among the latest to set down roots in Findlay Township. The municipality continues to be home to numerous businesses and industries that are finding that setting up shop in Clinton Commerce Park, Route 30 Industrial Park, North Field, Findlay Industrial Park, McClaren Woods, Chapman Commerce Park at Westport, and the RIDC Park provides easy access to interstate highways and Pittsburgh International Airport. Flabeg is a global leader in high-tech glass and mirror applications. The new 209,000-square-foot manufacturing facility will have an annual capacity to deliver solar mirrors which are used to help generate electricity at large-scale solar power plants. The German-based company was founded in 1882 and has manufacturing facilities in Europe, America, and Asia. ADC is a nonprofit warehouse distribution network that works with local stores to provide them with an efficient way of purchasing inventory. Its members are the owners, comprised of independent and family-owned stores. Their membership empowers the owners to be able to compete with big box stores through larger buying power and better discounts and rebates. The company has a large presence in Pennsylvania, particularly in the Harrisburg area, and brings its concept now to the Pittsburgh region. ADC also becomes the second facility to establish a presence at the new Findlay Industrial Park. Earlier this year, the Okonite Company built a 155,000-square-foot distribution center with warehouse. The company manufactures electrical cables and wiring. Still in the building stage is the new Dick’s Sporting Goods headquarters building at North Field on Pittsburgh International Airport property. The first phase of this project is the company’s 670,000-squarefoot office campus . At Clinton Commerce Park, Buncher added 200,000square-feet to its warehouse space for Fedex on Sweeney Drive, and Prominent Fluids added a 17,000-squarefoot addition to its building on Industry Drive in the RIDC Park. $OOHJKHQ\:HVW0DJD]LQH'HFHPEHU [[[[[[[[ ABOVE: Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and officials from Flabeg opened the company’s new solar mirror manufacturing facility in Findlay Township.
