Skema’s Modular Substations can be
used for a wide variety of applications
including LV/MV/HV packaged substations, local equipment rooms, control rooms, generator power plant
rooms, personnel refuges and as
general process or utility buildings.
They are fully assembled and rigorously tested within Skema facilities
before being shipped to site, by land,
sea or air, ready for rapid installation and commissioning.

The Modular Substations
10
One of the most important
and distinctive features of
Skema’s Modular Substations
is the opportunity they afford
to create a unique and fully
CUSTOMIZABLE solution, in accordance with each client’s
individual specifications, the
environmental requirements,
the environmental conditions
and the project-specific transport sport size limitations.
Skema’s Modular Substations can
be designed with fire ratings as
per the client’s requirements, and
with the capacity to withstand both
seismic and blast events. They are
suitable for ambient temperatures of
between -40°C and +50°C, resistant to harsh environmental condi-
tions and supplied with special paint
coating cycles that are appropriate for each specific application.
Skema’s Modular Substations are
space-efficient, highly reliable and
fully integrated, and equipped with
the latest state-of-the-art technology for Oil & Gas applications. They
are designed to work safely in harsh,
potentially explosive and chemically
contaminated environments, and are
intended for both onshore and offshore Oil & Gas / petrochemical plants.
A modular approach is key to creating large-scale structures, taking due
account of the transit constraints or
any potentially problematic conditions
(weight limits, road or railway transport,
presence of nearby structures, etc.).
Turnkey Solutions
During the project, Skema acts as an
EPC contractor, managing, co-ordinating and monitoring every aspect of the
project: detailed design, project management, scheduling, procurement
and expediting, QA/HSE management, documentation, fabrication, all
multidisciplinary installation activities
(architectural, mechanical, E&I, HVAC,
etc.), and testing and pre-commissioning at Skema’s fabrication yards.

In addition, Skema can transport
the equipment onto seagoing vessels, and can also provide transportation to site and full installation
and commissioning, as well as operational support and maintenance
for the life cycle of the installation.

The systems within
Skema’s modular substations afford the opportunity
to create a complete and fully CUSTOMIZABLE substation
allowing for any internal
configuration of the switchgear to be installed. Suitability for the specific conditions
of service is also assured.
14
In order to support the primary internal equipment (LV/MV/HV switchgear
or DCS) the following typical systems
are supplied:
>> Insulation for energy conservation,
using non-combustible materials
with type-tested fire resistance
(fire-resistant up to 120 minutes)
>> Special painting cycles and internal anti-skid floors
>> Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system engineered
to guarantee the ambient operating conditions
>> Pressurization system including airfiltering systems for contaminants
and toxic or corrosive substances
>> Gas, smoke, heat and fire detection system, conventional or addressable, with monitoring panels
that can interface with DCS and
field control systems
>> Transformer bay or equipped
rooms
>> Coating systems and corrosion protection for rust prevention even in
extremely corrosive hot/humid environments subject to the presence
of dust, salt and corrosive gasses
>> Lighting and small power distribution system
>> Equipment rated for hazardous
areas as per the AtEx 94/9/EC
directive

17.
>> Automatic fire-fighting systems:
total flooding, clean agent, environmentally friendly
>> Emergency Diesel Generators
>> Security, IT and Telecoms including PA/GA system to allow
personnel to monitor and control
normal activities
>> Battery and Uninterruptible Power
Supply (UPS system)

Design, engineering
and 3D
16
Skema utilizes a comprehensive
computer-based design system dedicated to carrying out
engineering calculations relating to structures, lifting and
loadout.
The system makes it possible to conduct three-dimensional analysis of
building structures, space optimization, clash avoidance and safety tolerances; to study static and dynamic
loads for lifting, transportation, blast
and seismic loads; to create innovative designs and building components.
A complete 3D model of the building
can be created by Skema’s specialists during the engineering phase.
The model features all of the systems
and auxiliaries, and is used for the
following purposes:
>> To avoid clashes between everything that is to be installed within the building
>> To optimize space and cable routing
>> To determine the installation
sequence for each system
>> To verify the required space for
the installation and the removal of
major pieces of equipment
20.
21.
17
>> To verify expansion potential
(free space for installation of future equipment, or equipment installed by others)
