The Board of the Sydney Cricket Club has the pleasure st of presenting for your consideration the Club’s 1 annual Report covering the 2007/08 season. The Club’s Financial Statements are included and they will require adoption at the Annual General Meeting of the Club. Second grade were under the direction of Richard Colbran and suffered from a number of weather-effected draws that came along with some close losses. Their position in the bottom third of the table did not reflect the ability in the team. Testament to this was the graduation to First Grade of Evan Dix, Anthony Brooks and Luke Donovan. The 2007/08 season saw the Club take its very first step on a journey to launch us to a new era in our Club’s history. Of course I’m referring to the decision for us to join in partnership with the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust to form the Sydney Cricket Club. The Club has taken on a new persona along the lines of the famous Clubs at London (Marylebone) and Melbourne. However we have brought with us 110 years of Tiger tradition, Tiger spirit and the famous Black and Gold colours. Our most consistent performers with the bat were Ian Burge and Andrew Watkins while our attack saw the development of promising bowlers in Angus Moncrieff and Anthony Lown, well supported by a couple of stalwarts in Andrew Hoppett and skipper, Richard Colbran. rd Neil Maxwell commenced the season as 3 Grade captain but a number of enforced absences saw Nick Bull step into the job. It was a tough season for thirds and their position on the table reflected the relative inexperience of the playing personnel. A combination of that history and commitment to the venture by our members and administrators will see the Club succeed at many levels in the years to come. I am sure we will look back in years to come and mark this season as one of the most important, if not the most important, in the Club’s long and illustrious history. th Similarly 4 Grade had a trying season but it was heartening to see a resurgence in their season toward the end with 2 wins from their last 3 matches. The emergence of some promising youngsters should be rewarded with better individual and team performances at this level next season and hopefully it will give us the opportunity to build on our strong finish. Unfortunately we didn’t mark the season with any premiership success but we did achieve the establishment of a playing and administrative infrastructure that will serve the Club well in its quest for success and recognition both on and off the field. In our men’s teams the highlight was the performance of our First Grade team. Under the astute leadership of our new skipper, Jon Moss, the team rallied after a poor start to reach the end of season finals. Unfortunately their run of success was stopped at the qualifying semi stage when we faltered against a strong Eastern Suburbs line-up. Nevertheless, with strengthening in a few positions, the signs are good for continuing success in the years to come. Personally there were some stellar performances, including:• • • • • • th Our 5 Grade was dealt some hard knocks during the season and it was one that could be called” characterbuilding.” Despite this, the team, its captain, Andrew Downie, and its players must be commended on the way they kept turning up with enthusiasm each week seeking that elusive win. th The 6 Grade team was kept in check by Marty Keetles who suffered continually throughout the season because of our relative lack of experience and playing depth. Jon Moss’ outstanding all round contribution – 618 runs & 39 wickets James Crosthwaite’s maiden Club century – 103 v St. George Adam Maher’s continuing improvement to become a feared strike bowler – 33 wickets @ 20.2 Andrew Donovan’s graduation to a genuine st wicket-taker at 1 Grade level, taking 5/59 in his nd 2 First Grade match. Tim Sparke’s magnificent century (171) against Randwick-Petersham Russel Arnold’s maiden century (148) against Parramatta Our Poidevin-Gray and Green Shield teams were not as successful as we would have hoped. Wins were hard to come by at both levels. A concerted effort in these important competitions will be required to improve our record with these teams. As can be seen the recurrent theme through the grades was a lack of depth and experience. The importance of the loss of many players whom we had relied on in the past cannot be overstated and was largely responsible for some disappointing performances in our lower grades. It is an issue that we will have to address next season if we are to seriously threaten for a premier position throughout the grades and the Club Championship. 6 st Our women’s 1 Grade was unable to defend the premiership won the previous season and given the playing talent in the team, their semi final loss was disappointing. As always the representative season played havoc with the team and proved a real test of our playing depth. operation of the Club. At the representative level Leonie Coleman, Nicole Goodwin, Ellyse Perry, Rene Farrell and Alyssa Healy were all part of. the Breakers team while we also had English International, Jenny Gunn as our Captain and Coach.Leonie and Ellyse played for the Southern Stars against the touring English team. Alyssaand Rene represented the under 21 (Shooting Stars) team. The Club’s Award for the outstanding Women’s player was awarded to Alyssa Healy who topped the batting averages and aggregate. The Club’s affairs were managed by our new General Manager, Daryl Chappelow, and I would like to thank him for his work in guiding the Club in this most important of Seasons. Daryl had with him a hardworking Operations Committee and to them and its Chairman, Tim Smith, also goes my appreciation. My congratulations go to our First Grade scorer, Narelle Johnston who was again appointed to a number of International matches. Narelle deserves the generous praise she receives from officials for her scoring work Season 2007/08 was also marked by a number of firsts for the Club. To mention a few of the more important we had the Official Launch of the Club by the Hon. Nathan Rees, M.P; the Club’s Presentation Night at the SCG and the conduct of our first “Out” match at the SCG against St George DCC for the Tiger Cup; rd Our 3 Grade team performed consistently throughout the season and were also semi finalists. Strong individual performances came from Sam Fitzpatrick and Cherie Buksh with the bat and Gail De Jong and Karin Crisp with the ball. All of these initiatives would not have been achieved without the input of an effective Board. In this regard I must first thank the Club President and Trust Chairman, Rodney Cavalier who has played such an important role in ensuring the new venture came to fruition and who continues to support the Club in such a dedicated manner. In addition I would like to congratulate Mr Rodney Cavalier on receiving an Honorary Doctorate from UTS for his tireless efforts over a long period, to ensure the Institution obtained University status. Our Brewer Shield team was a very young outfit and while they suffered on the field this season, the experience gained should be rewarded in coming seasons as several youngsters progress through the grades. We also had an Under 14 team representing the Club in the Northern Sydney Girls Cricket Competition and my thanks go to Denis O’Brien and Steve Hodgkinson for coaching and managing this team. I would also like to congratulate my other Board members for their enormous contribution in ensuring the well being of the Club on all levels and for their assistance in making the new venture a reality. Their continued support will lead to bigger and better things for the Club as we go forward into the brave, new world of the Sydney Cricket club On the coaching front, David Kelly was once again at the helm. David conducted our training sessions with 100% commitment and a concerted work ethic that should have been rewarded with more wins. It is to be hoped that next season all that hard work and a strong pre-season will lead to more success on the field. The redevelopment of Drummoyne Oval is a “work in progress” as we go through the administrative process of Draft Plans, Public Exhibitions and Development Applications. Nevertheless there is a real commitment to the proposal at both Council and Club level that will see work commence in 2008/09. We hosted a number of representative matches at Drummoyne Oval during the season – a State League match; a KFC Big Bash trial and a Women’s ODI that unfortunately had to be abandoned. Drummoyne Oval suffered in the wake of what must have been the wettest season for almost 20 years and a number of matches were interrupted or abandoned because of the weather. On the subject of Drummoyne Oval we are fortunate to have such a fine relationship with the City of Canada Bay Council and in particular with Mayor Angelo Tsirekas and General Manager, Gary Sawyer. I am most appreciative of both Angelo and Gary’s support in ensuring we have the best possible facilities at Drummoyne and their ongoing advocacy of the redevelopment of the Oval. The loss of Ryde Oval had a major impact on the Club as it meant ELS Hall and Jubilee Oval were elevated to a level of cricket to which they were probably not suited. The rain and the lack of ideal preparation at these two grounds added to our frustration as too many matches were played on inferior surfaces. I would also like to thank the SCG Trust, and its CEO, Jamie Barkley, in particular, for his unstinting support of the Club this season. Whether it was the opportunity to utilise the Trust’s hospitality, the maintenance of our equipment, the provision of sponsor’s products and auction items or generally whatever we requested, Jamie and his staff were always there to lend generous support. A Club like ours cannot function without a dedicated band of volunteers and we are fortunate to have such a group who have a real desire to see the Club grow and prosper. I would like to thank people like Glen Harding, Geoff Dix, Anne Golder, Narelle Johnston, Donna Shestowsky, Phil Lown, Brian Lulham, Stan Dochniak, Col Jefferies and Bill Johnston who willingly give of their time to make such an important contribution to the 7 In closing, let me take this opportunity to thank all members who go to make up our Club. You have all played a part in making the Club what it is today and for that you can be truly pleased. th In this the 7 year of our partnership with UTS, the relationship continues to be very positive and I am most grateful to their Vice Chancellor, Ross Milbourne and his nominee, Tom O’Sullivan for their assistance in maintaining the alliance that continues to serve as both so well. I am most conscious of the role played by the University in the Club and I look forward to strengthening that role even more in the years ahead. Let’s make 2008/09 a season when we advance those objectives and make the Sydney Cricket Club an even more special place with which to play and embrace the grand, old game. The Club would like to thank Cricket NSW and its CEO, David Gilbert, and his staff for their support and assistance during the season. The structure and the form are now in place for us to take the Club to exciting new places in the world of cricket. I commend to you all the ideal of being a part of this future. Dr. G.K. (Harry) Harinath Chairman Sydney C.C. 8 Club Delegates Dr Harry Harinath and Daryl Chappelow served as the Club’s Delegates to the Sydney Cricket Association with Dr Harinath also being the Delegate to the New South Wales Cricket Association. Board. Dr. Harinath was elected as Chairman of Cricket NSW in May, 2008. Olivia Thornton was appointed to the Sydney Cricket Association Women’s Competition SubCommittee. Dr Harinath continued in his role as a member of the NSW Cricket Board and the Cricket Australia Publicity We are fortunate to have such a grand ally in Chris Karas of The Weekly Times who continues to give such a broad coverage of the Club and its activities. Chris is always keen to assist in the promotion of the Club whether it be for its on-field performances or with its activities off the field. would like to record our thanks for his commitment and continued support of the Club In addition, the Club contributed a weekly report in the Inner Western Weekly. We also thank that publication and its reporters for their support in the promotion of the Club. Chris has been doing his for many years and the importance in ensuring we receive such positive publicity cannot be overstated. Once again, I Club Grounds The Club was privileged to again have the use of Drummoyne, ELS Hall Park No I, Jubilee, Birchgrove and Easton Park for our men’s and women’s teams throughout the season. being somewhat “sporting”. Hopefully we will be faced with better weather next season and the pitches will return to a level that will provide for better cricket. We would like to thank Council’s Peter Montague, Peter Hickman, Graeme Hanse and Ritchie Griffiths Unfortunately Ryde Oval was unavailable for the entire season due to major reconstruction of the pitch square and its facilities The Club’s Fifth Grade and Metropolitan Cup utilised the facilities at Jubilee Oval, Glebe. To be frank both teams were faced with inferior conditions on most occasions. Unfortunately Council’s contractor seemed to use any sign of bad weather as a reason to delay or minimise preparation and we were continually faced with abandonments or poor playing conditions. The one good note toward the end of the season was Council’s appointment of a new contractor. It is hoped this will lead to a significant improvement next season. The season was one of the wettest in recent memory and the impact on pitch preparation was significant for both the pre-match preparation and play on match day. On too many occasions we were faced with match abandonments or we played on pitches that were underprepared because of the bad weather in the days leading-up to Saturday. When the weather gods were kind to us, the pitch at Drummoyne was excellent and provided for good cricket. Adam Evison, our groundsman, worked hard under difficult circumstances on some occasions and we are grateful for the time and effort he put into his work. Our women’s teams played at Birchgrove Oval and our sincere thanks are expressed to the staff at Leichhardt Council for their assistance. We continue to enjoy an extremely harmonious and satisfying relationship with all four Local Government bodies and we thank the City of Canada Bay, the City of Ryde, the City of Sydney, and Leichhardt Council for their ongoing courtesies and co-operation. ELS Hall was maintained by Ryde Council and also suffered because of the weather and less than ideal conditions for proper preparation. This probably contributed to some of match pitches 9 Obituaries Joe Hall Joe Hall was a Vice President of our Club for some 27 years before his passing in 2007. You could always rely on Joe to appear at a game at Drummoyne in support of the Firsts or the Seconds – usually around afternoon tea- and add his personal touch to the proceedings with a great story about some current event. Whilst his major support was to be at Drummoyne, you could often find him slipping down to three’s at Ryde or the fifths at ELS hall just to check on how these teams were going. His financial commitment to the Club over many years was greatly appreciated. Over the course of the year, I would like to commend the commitment of each player for their attendance and performance at training. We had a new club and a new approach to cricket. Although the results weren’t as consistent on the field as everyone would have liked, the work ethic at training was always 100%. Next season we will see the benefits of all the hard work done in 07/08, however, we need to continue that hard work with a strong off season a strong pre-season and most importantly during the season proper to get the results we desire. Remember training is split into many different areas all headed into preparing you for the weekend’s game. You need to be physically and mentally ready to play at your maximum potential every weekend! will need to score hundreds to go up the grades. We needed to change our culture to succeed and this will be an ongoing approach. Vince Lombardi was once quoted as saying “the harder we worked as a team, the luckier we became”, very wise words. Our fitness sessions were also very well received, (after the initial shock) especially the sprint program from the NSWIS. Luke Donovan, Marcus Tripp and Nathan Ball lead the way all year with the fitness results/ highest scores recorded in the club. In a season of few highlights, the main achievement that everyone can be proud of is the First grade team making the finals after an unbelievable last round victory Finally, I would like to thank the following people for their support and guidance throughout the year: The support I received from the senior players in the club was appreciated, especially the captains. A team is only as good as the leadership it is shown and I believe this was one of our real strengths. To Jon Moss, Richard Colbran, Neil Maxwell, Tim Smith, Andrew Downie and Martin Keetles, you led from the front on and off the field and you need to be congratulated for the role you played in the development of the younger players in the club. I had a simple philosophy towards training, work everyone in the club hard and improve everyone’s approach to preparing for cricket each weekend. Once the hard work was done it was then a matter of preparing mentally for the game ahead and our leadership group and seminars worked well in supplying a very positive framework for every player in the club. Although the results showed otherwise, we really contested each game with a winning attitude and next year this needs to continue. The Inaugural Tiger Cup 20 December 2007 December 20 2007 saw the Club take its first step in its ambition of providing for special “out” matches for its social playing division. The match celebrated the anniversary of the birth of Bill “Tiger” O’Reilly and was played at the Sydney Cricket Ground between Sydney and St. George D.C.C. (Bill’s old Club). Director, Neil Maxwell’s innings was brief but Neil explained this by declaring that he had a ton of corporate business awaiting his attention. Mark Atkinson (46) took control of the lower order recovery and with former Test off spinner, Gavin Robertson (11), and NSW leg spinner, Adrian Tucker (28no) rallied the home sie to a formidable score of 9(dec) -249 at the end of their 50 overs. The Sydney and St.George XI’s include a mix of current and former players who had graced their clubs with distinction over many seasons. The Tigers felt they were probably 50 short of a winning score but didn’t reckon (neither did St. George) with the fiery opening spell of former Australian quick, Simon Cook. Cook defied niggling injuries, a flat track and a tight-fitting shirt as he summoned up the pace that saw him take five for on his Test debut. The match was eventually decided by the statisticians when rain intervened at about 3.30p.m with Sydney well in front according to the technological assessment of Messrs. Duckworth and Lewis. Cook quickly had 2 of Saints’s current first graders back in the shed. At 2-11 off 6 overs Cook sought the comforts of the dressing room himself. Moss, O’Shannessy and Healy took up the bowling and each was rewarded with a wicket. Sydney had first use of the pitch and Grade’s all time run champion, Greg Hayne and Vilen Sithloo got the Tigers away to a solid start of 43 before Sithloo departed. When the rains came with Saints 5-88, still 60 short of the required run rate, all the combatants sought refuge in the home dressing room and reminisced about old times, old adversaries and the enjoyment of a great day’s cricket and good fellowship. XI is shown below. 13 Men’s First Grade Report James Crosthwaite Crossy has been rewarded with a NSW rookie contract this year for making such a great impression on the Sydney cricket scene. For someone who has committed to moving from two states to follow his dream of playing cricket professionally, this cricket NSW contract is hopefully the start of a successful st career. His maiden 1 grade century v premiers St George was extremely impressive and most importantly started to turn selector’s heads. Well done on the contract Crossy and now there’s no excuses for lack of funds in your mobile! Life can be all about being in the right place at the right time, and I certainly felt that was the case when Neil Maxwell and Simon Cook approached me to be the inaugural captain of the new Sydney Cricket Club. After 7 years of first class cricket in Melbourne I was looking forward to passing on the knowledge I’ve gained over that time to some young talented cricketer’s whom I had never seen or met. Therefore, without judgment, I was able to decide for myself whether I could attempt to expose such talent. In all honesty, the findings this season have been remarkable. The unearthing of talent has been one of the highlights of the season for me. James Crosthwaite, Tim Sparke, Adam Maher and Luke Donovan stood out as very realistic contenders to play higher levels. Nathan Ball 2007/08 season was great learning curve for Bally after such a successful year in 06/07. As is always the case, when a player reaches good heights, the opposition always aims to pull you down. There lies awesome amounts of talent with Bally, with both bat and ball, and hopefully this off season in the UK has taught him a great deal of responsibility to ensure he doesn’t leave the job to anyone else. You have the ability Bally, make sure you’re prepared for each battle and you’ll kill it next season. 250 runs @ 27 and 16 wickets @ 35 is a massive under achievement. My challenge to you is 500 runs and 40 wickets. Looking back and being knocked out of the first round of finals was probably a fair indication of our season. We were consistent at times without being outstanding, but then really lacked that killer instinct to allow us to progress further. Each player however, at some point proved they have what it takes to be not only a successful first grader, but could possibly play at the next level. Adam Maher Willy was one of the finds of the year, not just in our club, but the whole of Sydney Grade cricket. Willy’s bowling improved out of sight and produced spells that would not look out of place on the SCG playing for NSW. It’s no secret Willy trained the house down in pre season, and it’s no secret he reaped the rewards during it. There were many highlights with the ball amongst his 33 wickets @ 20, but ironically it was with the bat that he had the whole team wanting to hug him. Willy’s 26no to get us home v Bankstown to make the finals was arguably the highlight of the season and one he’ll never forget. Well done Willy – need to push the 50 wicket barrier next season and you might even sneak up the order? Anthony Brooks st Debut season and scored maiden 1 grade half century (66no) to defeat North Sydney in round 7. Brooksy showed fantastic resilience and determination required for an opening batsman to bring us home in that game. As he is fully aware, that same passion is required every time he walks to the st crease. Well done a good start to your 1 grade career Brooksy. Nidhu Gotadke Every captain wants a player like Nid’s. Not only for his ability, but his willingness to fit into the team dynamics. Nid’s was the bolter through the off season, proving to the selectors he was good enough to step up. On so many occasions Nid’s was asked to do a job either opening the batting or getting quick runs down the order. Every team needs a utility player who can adapt to certain situations. His bowling developed throughout the season with a best of 4/51 v ND’s. A great team man!! Tim Sparke I think it’s fair to say we all know Sparkey is a sleeping giant. From an ability perspective, Timmy would agree a return of 480 runs @ 28 is not good enough for a player of his calibre. Most people st wouldn’t know this, but 2 days prior to his highest 1 grade score of 171 v Randwick, Timmy was given an ultimatum – score runs or you’ll be dropped as he was only averaging only 15. It showed enormous grit and character to put in a performance under that amount of pressure, and when players have the ability to do that, you never quite know how good they can become! Aim higher and higher Timmy. Jarryd Gordon The flash!! If flash could manage to emulate his change room antics to the cricket pitch, we’d have an unbeatable combination. What I did see from flash in round 6 v Sutherland was a remarkable display of st clean and powerful hitting to post his highest 1 grade score of 97no and take us to a memorable victory that had almost past us by. Bigger is better flash!! 14 Craig O’Shannessey Talk about a competitor! The DISH will be sorely missed next year. His competitive streak and ability to turn a match with the ball was a great asset to our team. As a captain, this man will never let you down. His passion is unrelenting and his desire for success exactly what’s required when playing cricket at the highest level. Thanks for your support mate as my vice captain and we look forward to seeing you back soon. Luke Donovan Dono’s wish was finally granted when he was picked st in 1 grade after some excellent performances in two’s. Talk about taking to it like a duck to water! Dono was never daunted by the occasion and bowled like a man possessed. 13 wickets @ 15 with a best of 5/59 v Blacktown was an outstanding performance for his first season. Like Willy Maher, he trains the house down and it’s no surprise to see Dono’s success shine through. The second season is always the most challenging Dono with teams knowing your skill, but there’s no reason why you can’t get even better. Russel Arnold It’s not often you get to play with an accomplished ex test player, who is happy to relay all the knowledge learned over an extended test career. Rusty has fit into our club so well that the boys can’t seem to get enough of him. With only 4 innings, Rusty amassed 242 runs @ 80 and proved why he has been able to mix it with the best from all over the world. He will join us again after his ICL commitments and we cherish his input and look forward to welcoming him back to the team. On a final note, I would like to thank the support I received from Simon Cook as chairman of selectors and the wonderful meals his wife, Di used to serve up at selection meetings. A few highlights included a superb end of day victory from behind against Northern Districts, the well constructed and professional victory over 2006-07 Premiers – Mosman and Russel Arnold joining us for Day 1 against Blacktown at Drummoyne. For those reading this in years to come I would like to remind you of Luke Donovan’s disappointment of a dropped catch against Sutherland, Gus Moncrieff’s transformation from regulation trundler to ‘crazy eyed’ wicket taker while bowling against Parramatta and there may also be a need to relive the drinks break during the rain interrupted match against Gordon. 24 players represented the team throughout the season yet only 3 players that played in the first game played in the last. Often ‘rebuilding’ is used as an explanation for lower than expected performance but replacing the quantity of players necessary this season proved difficult. Despite this, the new breed demonstrated their abilities and the potential for an exciting new era for the Cub. The challenge for players like Angus Moncrieff, David Johnston, Anthony Lown, John Smith and Justin Moore is for them to become the nd dominant 2 Grade players like Maxwell, Maher, Donovan, Poria and Dix before them. Good luck to everyone for next season. I am confident 2008/09 will be a strong year as the Sydney Cricket Club cements itself and the new age of young players coming through the ranks find their feet and confidence at senior level. On reflection the team played better cricket than its overall position warranted. We had genuine chances to win 4 of the matches lost, which if won, would have resulted in us leap frogging the pack of teams in front to land and us safely into the semis. Long live the Tigers! In saying this it is important to acknowledge there were serious deficiencies in particular aspects of our game which need to be improved. To be successful we will need more than one of our top batsman scoring over 500 runs, we will need 3 bowlers taking more than 30 wickets and we will need all of our catches taken. It sounds simple but translating the training into performances on the field and making the most of every opportunity are hopefully some of the key learnings for members of this team over the course of the season. Richard Colbran Captain To review the contribution of our players this season Cameron Lane I would like to pay special tribute to Laney. His support, assistance and encouragement throughout the season was superb and he continues to be a fantastic contributor to the club. He understands and loves Tiger ‘culture’, again demonstrated excellent keeping skills and led the team on a few occasions very well. As he develops his leadership skills he will start to translate his passion and knowledge so the young guys can easily digest it, plus it would be great to see him contribute more runs – hopefully this will happen next year. I would like to sincerely send my thanks to our loyal volunteers and supporters, who without we could not have functioned. I would particularly like to thank our official scorer Donna Shestowsky, back up scorer #1 Phil Lown, back up scorer #2 Laurie Lane and of course Bill Johnston who volunteered to take over the vacated Team Managers role. I would also like to send our thanks and regards to Adam for doing his best with Drummoyne Oval during possibly the wettest season in recent memory, everyone involved with the canteen (and afternoon teas) and to Daryl Chappelow for his support as General Manager and Coach - David Kelly. Ian Burge Burgey again showed his value as a senior player and an invaluable member of this team. He consistently batted well, for long periods and held the top order together. His experience and willingness to work with, and support, the younger players was a telling factor in the development of many of them and also the team’s successes. thoroughly deserved his selection this season and he reinforced that selection with a number of excellent performances and ended up toping the Overall we had a good season. We had a number of players who were on step learning curves and we competed and contested against every team. It was a truly enjoyable season playing with a group of guys who tried their best, were willing to learn, trained hard and did improve. Most importantly every player represented the Club in a manner that we can all be proud, and which many 21 Andrew Hoppett There isn’t a bloke at the Club who has given more to play at a senior level than Hoppy. He bowling averages (17.6 with 24 wickets). I truly hope he looks backs on this season with fondness as it gave all of us so much to see a guy in his mid-30’s so desperate not only to play but compete at this level. The best thing was his bowling improved throughout the season as he got used to different styles of play and various conditions. Congrats Hoppy on a fantastic season! Anthony Lown nd Lowny has the chance to fill the void in 2 Grade st left by Luke Donovan’s promotion to 1 Grade, plus (you heard it here first) to join Dono to become the Tiger’s next spin twins (which is a very scary thought). For an 18 year old leg nd spinner to average 18 in his first season in 2 grade is fantastic and demonstrates his potential. First though, he needs a lot of hard work on every aspect of his game and he needs to continue to learn how to read the game and batsmen. Lowny needs to challenge and drive himself to take significant leaps in his on-field contribution. I have no doubt he can do this and we saw dramatic improvements this year in his fielding particularly off his own bowling. Andrew Watkins I don’t think Wato would mind me saying that his season sums up a lot about the team’s season - a lot of potential, some amazing cricket but overall probably below expectation. He deserved to top the aggregates but to have a top score of 58 is disappointing. Wato could score a lot of grade runs, he could help teams win a lot of matches and he could play a lot of first grade but now after a few season with the Tigers it is up to him if he is going to transfer these ‘coulds’ into ‘dids’. I hope he does it as he has a lot of to offer the Club and those playing with him. Lowny you have played a full season of ‘big boys cricket’ – you need to start next year as a leader nd of 2 Grade and dominant the bowling attack with long spells and big wicket hauls. Good luck. David Johnston DJ could be the find of the year for the Tigers. After starting in 4’s from the Central Coast he deserved his selection up the grades and subsequently into 2’s. He also deserved to hold his spot in the team and contributed at all times with great heart and intent. DJ is a talented and solid cricketer, his challenge now after a full grade season is to translate his skills into consistent onfield performances. Hundreds and five wicket hauls have to be DJ’s goals for next season and anything less would be disappointing. Vil Sithloo 2007/08 was an interesting season for Vil. His onfield performances after coming back from first grade were disappointing, especially as the team was looking to rely on him. Yet his demeanor after coming back to 2’s was outstanding and confirmed his season was not a failure. He showed so much maturity, it was great to see him develop into a senior club player. A guy of his ability should score 90 runs from 8 innings only once in a career, and I hope he uses it to define his future successes. I would like to send a sincere thanks to both DJ and his Dad – Bill, for their contribution to the team and Club in their first season with the Tigers and I truly hope that they enjoyed the season at their new home. They are both now true Balmainiacs! Angus Moncrieff Gus’s 5-wicket hall against the premiers Mosman was a highlight of the year; so too his individual spells to ex-NSW players Marty Haywood (Mosman) and Matthew Phelps (Syd Uni). The most pleasing aspect of the way Gus finished the season in comparison to the start was the way he worked through a bout of poor form to regain the swing and bite that will make him a future Tiger first grader. Gus is a great bloke, who is a real asset to our Club and with some extra strength and a little bit more ‘mongrel’ at the crease he has the chance to be a genuine wicket taker who can bowl teams out. Justin Moore Justin’s introduction and then debut with the Tigers will be a story long told at the Club. After fielding as a sub and taking a good catch against Gordon during a visit to watch his Central Coast mate (DJ) followed by a few reference checks and a clearance from his club he completed the last part of the season in Tigers. Still to complete his schooling, Justin will be one of the new breed. He has definitely got the talent to play at this level and beyond. His goal will be to cement his position in the coming season; if he does that he will have scored heavily and a senior batting position will have been filled. A highlight of playing cricket on Drummoyne Oval this season was seeing Gus charge up the hill and bowling beautiful and almost unplayable out swing. Good luck next season Gus, a big season with great success is there for you. 22 Marcus Tripp Trippy deserves to be recognized as a great club man. He was selected to open the batting at the start of the year and gave it his best but unfortunately he could not put the scores on the board yet he put aside his disappointed and continued his fantastic contribution to the Club and support to this team which we were all thankful. Hopefully with another year of experience he can secure, through weight of runs, nd a batting spot in 2 Grade. John Smith Another of the ‘potential’ gang – and he has loads of it. It is worth registering in this report that, but nd for a stinker of a decision, his first ball in 2 grade would have seen ex-NSW batsman Matthew Phelps out LBW. For a new kid on the block Smithy bowled very well when he played 2’s in the last month of the season, I think his big challenge now will be to listen and convert the advice of those like Simon Cook into action on the field. Luke Donovan Dono’s progression to, and then subsequent success in, first grade is an achievement the Club can be tremendously proud of - another Tiger cub developed from juniors to the senior grade who is not only a true Tiger but also fine young man. He started in 2nds a few ago as a shy and quiet young boy with a fairly strong belief in his own bowling. He left seconds as the competitions best spinner, capable of bowling teams out at any time on any pitch. Andrew Plummer Plums had an interesting season during his debut year with the Tigers. He obviously has the talent with both bat and ball but we didn’t see the best of him nor the consistency required to retain or then regain his spot. Hopefully next season he will get nd the performances on the board to secure a 2 Grade spot. Suhaas Kaushik I hope Suhaas – a new comer to the Club, enjoyed his time not only in 2’s but also at Tigerland. It was a shame he couldn’t get the runs behind him necessary at this level but he certainly showed promise, and hopefully next season he will be able to convert some big scores. Evan Dix st As with Dono, Evan’s promotion to 1 Grade is a fine achievement for the Club and also recognition of Evan’s perseverance and dedication to cricket and the Club. He thoroughly deserved his selection in first grade – he is a dominant second grade batsman, and displayed this on many occasions none more so than recording the nd season’s highest 2 Grade score (115 vs Parramatta). Josh Murphy It was a shame injury hampered Josh’s season as he bowled encouragingly well during his stints in 2’s. With the development of Gus, Hoppy and Johno Smith having Josh’s left arm mediums would have been a real bonus to our attack. I hope he manages to force his way back into the team next season. Anthony Brooks To get promoted Brooksy did what everyone says you have to do but few understand – he accepted responsibility as a batsman and scored a lot of runs. He deserved his selection in 1’s and after he left our batting was much weaker – an indication of his contribution in the first few matches. Jacob Maher Unfortunately Jacob did not get the chance to play nd more than one game for 2 Grade, but his enthusiasm during his stint was outstanding. Again, being new to the club hopefully he can get some strong results under his belt. Marty Brooks It is excellent that Marty got his chance to debut in nd 2 Grade this season and I am sure it gave him the chance to see where his game needs to be to play at this level consistently. I don’t think he should shy away from undertaking the role of an all rounder as he showed talent in both disciplines. Fielding and commitment to cricket and the club are real strengths and aspects of his game that could make him a valuable team member at this level. Russel Arnold nd There aren’t too many 2 Grade sides that can boast an international test and one-dayer in their ranks but it was fantastic to welcome Rusty into the team – albeit for one day; but his willingness to be involved with the team was much appreciated. Andrew Ware Warey is a great team player who always contributes and proves his worth when he plays. It is a shame he is not available more often due to his commitments to the NSW Blues. Jay Poria Jay felt the pressure this year of trying to fulfill his own, and others, expectations following his incredible rise to first grade and State U19 representative honours. He is a great guy with a heap of potential and I truly hope he finds the will to continue his cricket and I also hope the club helps him through this process. 23 Neil Maxwell Another of the youngsters who showed promise and with a little bit of hard work, a willingness to listen to others advice and the odd ‘long hard look in the mirror’ may help this podgy medium pacer develop in a decent all rounder who may then possibly receive an irregular call up when injuries and vacancies require plugging. In all seriousness, it was fantastic to have Neil play in our final game at Drummoyne Oval against the 2006/07 Premiers – Mosman. Our solid victory - thanks largely to Maxi’s great spell against their upper order, was a fitting end to the season and possibly his last grade match at Drummoyne. Although his dismissal on the last ball of Day 1 shouldn’t be forgotten (and won’t be by those who need to pass on the odd friendly reminder to Mr. Maxwell in years to come). Ultimately it was a disappointing season as we won only 3 games and finished near the bottom. However neither weather nor fate were on our side, culminating in a number of draws or close losses that might have seen us push for a mid-table finish to the season. rd The 3 grade side suffered from a mixture of inexperience and poor form, rather than a depth of potential. Despite the unconvincing results and statistics, many of this side will form integral parts of 1s, 2s and 3s in the years to come. Following 3 washouts, the next game was against a second placed Sydney Uni. It was a game that could have set up our latter season with the belief that we could beat the top sides, but the 22 run loss left us with no chance of making the finals. Our performance was riddled with simple mistakes. We’d have been struggling to catch a bus home, let alone a cricket ball. Here Vamsy and Suhass should be mentioned; they do catch the bus – from Bondi – to every single training and game. This dedication, along with the fact that they moonlight as the Indian cricket team’s aggressive personal bodyguards, has made them interesting and extremely valued characters at the club. The season started promisingly, with ex-NSW veteran Neil Maxwell at the reins and many rd th members of highly successful past 3 and 4 grade sides in the mix. We had our best result in round 2, defeating St George outright with a convincing result. Andrew Plummer with a well earned 95, something he failed to replicate later in the season – possibly a result of the frustration arising from his consistent pre-game traffic incidents. Mark Baker also took the only ‘5 for’ for the season with an amazing 7-18 in the first innings that set up the win. Bakes will be back next season. The second last game of the season vs Mosman demonstrated the capacity of the 3s team. It was a comprehensive win over the minor premiers following another 300+ performance with the bat. All the batsmen contributed, Marcus Tripp found his feet at number 5 and Matt Grice provided an exciting display with 46. Gricey and Trippy are great clubmen, they are an example of passion and pride in the Tiger’s colours each time they walk onto the field. The major positive to come out of the season was the emergence of a group of talented younger players, most of whom played in the PGs side. Marty Brooks, Darren Smith, Jacob Maher, Jono Smith, Dan Jacob, Marcus Tripp, Josh Murphy, Andrew Plummer, James Pryde, Angelo Joseph and Jonathon New are all individuals under pressure to provide a resurgence throughout the grades when they mature as cricketers. While there was a problem with consistency each of them demonstrated ability to perform above expectations, rewarded by several appearances in 2nds. Marty and Smithy in particular, who both narrowly missed out on centuries, were instrumental in the successful performances of the nd side and will be striving for 2 grade starts in the coming season. The next 4 rounds saw us lose our captain to injury and exorbitant IPL salaries, as well as our best spinner and best bat to 2s. Anthony Lown and Dave Johnson are two young players who, while not prime candidates for the acrobatics of Cirque du Soleil (Not that there isn’t a place in the circus for Lowny), are blessed with talent that could see them both become regular mainstays in the top side until Phil and Bill can’t be bothered to drive them to the cricket anymore. Our next win did not come until round 9 against an unenthusiastic Blacktown side. Despite scoring 300+ and looking set to go for an outright, the match paled in comparison to the questionable celebrations and player negotiations that came with Ben Matthews’ first appearance as a Sydney CC skipper. 2 weeks of village cricket that none the less provided some much needed points. A special mention should be made for Neil rd Maxwell. While he was sorely missed by the 3 grade side of 2007/08, his contribution to the UTS Balmain sides of past years cannot be underplayed. He is respected as one of the great contributors to the club and will be sorely missed. Sadly many of our home games were washed out at ELS, which was used because of a redevelopment at Ryde Oval. I challenge climate change activists, tarpaulin quality advocates, or fans of sightscreens to have summits at ELS Hall. They will be sorely disappointed. Saved his best to last with a big partnership with Angelo in the last game. Talented and with some spunk, Tom needs to string some performances together and his confidence will sore. Loves hair product, was hard to get time in front of the mirror in the sheds when he was around. While never setting the competition alight, the th Sydney Cricket Club’s 4 Grade team took tremendous strides this year in terms of development and learning. Decimated after over 20 players left the club from th last season, 4 Grade’s look at the start of the season resembled a Green Shield team. However after a period of adjustment and some hard work at training, the boys showed a very steep learning curve and after Christmas put some good performances together. Suhass Kaushik Suhass started in 2’s then found his way down to us after a string of bad luck. Showed that he needed some in his first dig when he was put down on 0 then went on to make 43 against North Sydney. Suffered like all of us on ELS Hall, Should see a more producivet season out of Has next season. Loved getting his shirt off in the sheds. Washouts didn’t help as Sydney experienced its first wet summer for some time with at least 3 matches abandoned with us in a winning position as well as juicing up an already juicy ELS Hall wicket. Unfortunately our oval was probably the lowlight of the season with the wicket substandard on at least half of the occasions. This made a tough season to start with even tougher. Patrick Wilmot Paddy had an auspicious start to his grade career. Playing his first game on turf, he didn’t know that he required spikes to play on turf wickets. Preceded to top score with 50* in his first game of grade cricket. Unfortunately struggling for the rest of the year, Paddy improved everywhere else especially his fielding. He has a very unorthodox style but is a very good ball striker, Paddy’s challenge will be to be selective on which balls to hit and leave and know his limitations. However we had plenty of highlights, a great early win against Manly coming from nowhere to take the points, a solid effort against North Sydney, a gusty win against eventual finalists Sydney Uni and an emphatic victory over Mosman plus some excellent individual performances which I will make mention later on. I would like to thank the volunteers and parents in particular the Newman’s, the Fiore’s, the Truelove’s, the Wilmot’s and the King’s for all helping throughout the year, you made it possible for us to play on a Saturday. To Daryl Chappelow and the Operations group a big thankyou you made the season easier to cope with. Tom Truelove Tommy has a truckload of ability. Very competitive, he has a good pair of hands and was always encouraging and revving the boys up in the field. To take the next steps, Tom needs to curb some of his attacking flair and get a little smarter in shot selection. Good square of the wicket needs be a little more patient and relax a little more at the crease. Loves poker at Paddy’s place. As the twilight begins for my career it is pleasing to see the next generation coming in and giving it a red hot go. Hopefully I am around to see some big time performances from the next group of Balmaniacs. To those who I missed in the following analysis, you all contributed to the season past and I look forward to seeing you all next season. Nathan Fiore Nathan showed what hard work and a determination rd to succeed could do. Leading wicket taker and 3 leading run scorer, Nathan was still 14 when he th played his first 4 grade game. Was quiet at the start but came home after Christmas with a string of good performances. His 5/35 against Premiers Randwick was superb as was his 50* against Sydney Uni won the game for us. Has a big workload next season, may need to cut down on the Triathlon’s and the decathlon’s to fit it all in. Another one who loved to take his shirt off in the sheds. Angelo Joseph Angelo came across from North Sydney and slotted in nicely for us at the top of the order. Technically sound, Angelo found the going tough at ELS Hall (along with all the batters) but when away from there he usually got us away to a good start. Needs to work on turning the strike over and playing a little straighter early on. Loved a dive in covers when the ball was going straight to him. Mark Baker Bakes was down for only a handful of games but quickly became the second leading wicket taker. Showed the young blokes how to sustain pressure with 11 wickets in 38 overs. Loves a pair of skins. 32 Fourth Grade Report (cont’d) Daniel Jacob I was a little sad to see DJ back in the 4’s. Had a tough start in 3’s and lost form as a result. Got a start on most occasions, needs to shoulder more responsibility when he is batting now as he moves into senior player status. Can do most things on the cricket field including captain, DJ’s challenge will be to remain more patient with his game including taking on more workload. Big seasons ahead for DJ. James Pryde We saw Prydey because of a lack of opportunity in 3’s. Won the game single handedly against North Sydney with 6/49 then didn’t see him again till late in the season. Break through year for Prydey coming up. Loves a tub. Steven King Kingy showed that he has what it takes ripping through ND’s top order and finishing with 5/62. School commitments limited Steven to only a handful of games. Can swing the ball a long way, patience and relaxing a little when at the top of his mark will see Kingy go along way. Max Newman Maxy had a solid year with the gloves. He improved as the year went on and come season end was reading the game a lot better. Realised that he wasn’t just there to catch the ball, Maxy now needs to up his work at training and take on the batsman by standing up and changing the game. Batting wasn’t there this year needs to know where his big shots are and exploit them when they are bowled to him. Phil Caruso Vic came back about 5 games into the season after a sojourn in Europe. Carrying a few extra kilos, Vic set about working hard in getting back his fitness and was rewarded with some good returns for the 4’s. His 4/46 against Parra was as good as any I have seen him bowl. Has learnt to move it both ways now needs to work more on planning to get a batsman out rather than just be content to bowl him dots. His work with the social committee was excellent. A fantastic clubman. John Smith Smithy was the other find of the year. Big size big action, Smithy loved ELS Hall and made the batters tap dance when the ball went past their nostrils. Worked very hard on his fitness as he had a bad back, moved up the grades and ended up in 2’s after a good year. Should see more improvement after more hard work in the gym next season. Another one who found Darling St, MG needs to keep a close eye on him. Patrick Little Paddy played a couple of one-day games with us but his presence always showed. Very experienced and competitive bowler, it could be the last time we see Paddy playing competitively. Always played to win, it will be sad not to see the big man charging down the hill. Loved monitoring the young fast bowlers fitness regimes. Will be sorely missed. Vamsy Doddala Vamsy was with us because of work commitments made it impossible to train and added value whatever he did. Struggled because of the weather and lack of training, Vamsy always gave his 100%. With a good pre-season and more training time, look to see Vamsy again up the grades. Frustrating because of the weather and our interminable washouts and unrewarding due to the lack of wins and standout performances. had 8 innings during this most disruptive of seasons. Similarly the bowling stats aren’t great with Jonathan Yogarajah leading the way with 8 wickets. He bowled the most overs throughout with only 58 – says something about the lack of opportunity. Pete Boyages came to 5’s late in the season and picked up 7 wickets at the good rate of 13.4. The team suffered because of a relative lack of experience and a lack of team stability – such is th the plight of 5 Grade as a lack of depth and late unavailabilities impacted most heavily at our end. Hopefully the upside of this will be that those players whom we have exposed to grade cricket will learn and benefit from the experience and they and the Club will reap some future rewards. There were some promising cricketers who passed through 5’s during the season and it is to be hoped that they will go onto bigger and better things both individually and a part of the Club as a whole. The part of the game at which we suffered most was in or batting – we failed to score as much as 200 throughout the season (185 was our highest). This makes it difficult to win matches irrespective of whether you’re setting or chasing a target. th In an ideal world we would like to see 5 Grade as a stable core of players next season that will hit the season running and prosper. It’s not an impossible ask and with more experience and maturity the personnel are there for us to have a successful season. It will take each of us setting some personal goals, ensuring we avoid any short cuts and applying ourselves to maximize our own performances. The challenge awaits us all. th Those who did play some consistent 5 Grade were Ben Matthews who scored the most runs at 227, Norm Abdal with 157 Tom Matson and Andrew Downie. The side put in some great performances throughout the year but we were inconsistent especially in the back end of the season. Once again our first grade team was affected by the number of players away with representative commitments (6 WNCL players, 2 NSW A players; 3 NSW U/19 players; 2 NSW U/17 players and 2 Australian players). Sydney Cricket Club entered the semi final match against Universities at Drummoyne as favourites but unfortunately we went down in a close match. As st 2006/2007 1 grade premiers it was disappointing not to progress to the Grand Final but our side will be even more determined to bring back the trophy next year. Rain was ultimately the dominant factor in the season as of the 10 possible matches, 4 were totally washed out, a further 2 partially washed out and we only had 4 complete games in the season. Although the girls did not manage to win any games, there were lots of positives to be taken from the season. The team was captained by Annika Humphreys who fostered a spirit of cohesiveness and camaraderie in the team as well as opening the bowling. Emily Watts was the leading run scorer in the team and regularly tied down the opposition with her economical spin bowling. Kristen Thompson started the season with a really solid innings with the bat against Bankstown and was consistent behind the stumps as wicket keeper. Dominique O’Brien usually opened the batting and showed her experience with some solid contributions in the field. Being a young team, for many of the girls it was their first season playing on turf pitches and it was encouraging to see how their performances improved with experience during the season. Apart from the first game against Bankstown, enthusiastic fielding and at times some good bowling meant that the girls were able to restrict the opposition in the field to gettable totals. As the season progressed, it was encouraging to see better consistency with the bowling, though the girls need to keep working on their accuracy to reduce the number of wides and no balls given away. Claire Hodgkinson opened the bowling to be the team’s leading wicket taker and her batting showed promise as the season progressed. Ally Catterson showed potential with some useful contributions with the bat and Bec Cincotta provided handy support bowling and showed promise in the field with two excellent run outs. Claudia Bretag provided lots of encouragement in the field to the rest of the team. Beth Wonders showed lots of promise with accurate medium pace bowling and some handy batting contributions. Tess Noble showed an exciting lack of fear in the field and made some handy contributions with her batting. Morgan Whitby provided good support bowling and Alysha Prakash provided spin bowling support and backed up as reserve wicket keeper. Katerina King and Kandy Lambert also made contributions in the games they played. Unfortunately while batting, inconsistency meant that many of the girls threw away good starts with an unguarded loose shot. It took a while for the girls to get used to the less consistent bounce of turf pitches and to be content to play straight and to regularly look for the quick single to keep the score ticking along. In the round 7, good tight bowling and sharp fielding had Campbelltown-Camden 6-33 after 13 overs, but unfortunately we could not finish them off and the opposition ended up making 119. Despite a good start to our innings, some loose shots threw away a good prospect for victory for us to be all out for 93. Despite the frustrations of rain, there were lots of positives for the team as the girls showed plenty of potential and most will still be young enough to play Brewer Shield next season. Daniel Jacob carried on from Round 1 with another 20not out as he and DJ added the necessary runs that saw us home with 4 overs and 6 wickets to spare. Anticipation was high for a successful 2007/08 season for our Poidevin-Gray team but disappointingly we failed to live up to our high expectations. Our confidence was buoyed by the st availability of a couple of 1 Graders in James Crosthwaite and Jay Poria and a troop of talented players from our lower grades. The match against Blacktown was marred by the weather when we had an upset victory in sight. Our batting was probably 40 short of what we would have liked in totalling 183 and failing to bat out our overs. Jonathan New showed promise in the opening position with a hard fought 36, Darren Smith carried on with another 37 and Jacob Maher also getting 30. Our problem was that none of these 3 went on with the job to get us to the total we were seeking. Nevertheless we had our runs on the board and with rain threatening, Jay turned in his most fiery spell of the season to have most of the fancied Blacktown batsmen in the shed at 4-29, Jay getting all 4 wickets. Blacktown rallied a little to be 4-68 off 22 overs but with Duckworth-Lewis in our favour we were unable to get the necessary 25 overs bowled before the rains came and denied us of a win. Come late October we commenced our campaign with a match at Drummoyne against a formidable Roosters line up who soon had our ambitions for a competitive total on the ropes as they ran through our top order to have four of our best back in the pavilion with only 5 runs on the board. To the rescue came newcomer David Johnston and Daniel Jacob who grafted away initially to get us back into the match. The two came together at 533 off 17 overs and slowly built some respectability to our batting until they set about the tiring ghost’s attack in the latter overs, so much so th that they had a 6 wicket partnership of the 30’s in their sights. Their partnership continued to prosper beyond a hundred with DJ approaching his maiden Club century and Daniel playing an important supporting role. With the total looking a lot more respectable DJ succumbed in the search for quick runs after adding 124 in partnership with Daniel. Jay Poria continued on the heavy hitting with Daniel now joining in to the extent that we posted a reasonable 6-209 at he end of our overs. Daniel finished on 65no and Jay 27no in adding th another 52 for the 7 wicket. This was probably the turning point of our season and after that our performances fell away with some poor batting performances. Randwick-Petersham was next and our bowlers did well to restrict their batting to 7-183 off their 50 overs. Dave Johnston showed his all round value to the team in getting 3 wickets while Marty Brooks was as consistent as ever in getting his 2. It was our batting that let us down in this match and we never came to grips with the opposition attack as we steadily lost wickets and were unable to establish a decent partnership. The result was a paltry 80 all out in 36 overs with no one reaching double figures. When our turn came to bowl, the pitch had flattened considerably and our attack struggled to contain an aggressive and much vaunted East’s batting line up. To their credit our bowlers kept pegging away but were unable to get a clutch of wickets going. Marty Brooks bowled a tight 10 overs with good support coming from Josh Murphy and David Johnston. However Easts kept themselves in front and finally reached the th required in the 47 over with 4 wickets down. Penrith took advantage of an inexperienced bowling attack in our next match in amassing 7299, an unlikely target for us. Matt Brooks took 2 wickets in his P/G’s debut but overall a disappointing bowling effort. Similarly our batting was not up to standard and once again we batted for only 36 overs in totalling 132. Marcus Tripp (30) and Darren Smith (41) were the only batsmen to show any form. We were off to Allan Border next missing Crossy and Jay but felt reasonably satisfied with our efforts in the field as we controlled Mosman to a gettable 225 off 50 overs in good batting conditions. The wickets were shared by Marty Brooks, Dave Johnston and Jacob Maher with 2 each. Our run chase started reasonably well with Marty Brooks turning in a fine all-round performance for his 30. The loss of 2 quick wickets saw newcomer Darren Smith joined by Dave Johnston and they set about the Mosman attack in a fine partnership that eventually yielded th 101 runs for the 4 wicket. The loss of Darren at 4-153 did not deter DJ who marched to continue his stellar batting form in scoring his maiden club Our batting remained a problem against Uni of NSW and despite our bowlers doing a fine job in dismissing the students for 209 we fell well short with only 112 on the board in reply. Debutante Steve King impressed with 3/34 off his 10 overs and Dave Johnston took another 3 wickets. Our new Central Coast recruit Justin Moore was the only batsmen to show any resolve in scoring 29. 47 Poidevin-Gray Report (cont’d) Batting first against Fairfield we failed to get to our 50 overs and with 152 we were well short of par. Marty Brooks showed real determination in holding the innings together for his 45no and got some support from Darren Smith (27), Justin Moore (24) and a colourful 25 from Anthony Lown. Our total was never going to be enough and despite Anthony and DJ picking up 2 wickets each Fairfield passed us 5 down with plenty of overs to spare. To make our P/G season rewarding for all concerned and to make a serious challenge for the semis we need to look at taking a more intensive approach to the Competition. We will have gained some much needed experience this season, particularly as we exposed a number of our younger players to a higher level of cricket. To fully benefit from this next season we will need to start our planning earlier, establish a real camaraderie within the team and build on those aspects to achieve more on field success. Solid middle order bat as well. This season’s Green Shield performance was disappointing and for the second consecutive season we failed to record a win. For the record we had 2 draws and 5 losses. Matthew Pasternasky – needs to work hard on the simple things to achieve the required Green Shield level. Has another season so he needs to cash in on his inherent ability next season On these statistics there seems that little was gained from the season but on an individual basis we did unearth some young prospects who hopefully will go on to make successful grade careers for themselves and the Club. Nic Bills – big, strong opening bowler. Also likes to hit the ball hard down the order. Principally we underachieved with our batting. We never scored enough runs and only on one occasion did we bat our 60 overs. We failed to give our bowlers a chance and when chasing we inevitably lost wickets at crucial stages to minimise any chance of reaching a target. Nick White – useful left arm swing bowler and lower order bat. Suffering at the moment because of bowling restrictions. Will continue to improve with exposure to grade cricket Tom Truelove – Tom can bat as evidenced by his efforts against Blacktown Easts and Fairfield He needs to commit wholeheartedly to his approach to the game to turn the 30’s into big scores. Extra work on his fielding is a necessity. Our bowling was up to standard for this level. Our openers did a good job, our change bowlers maintained pressure and our spinners bowled economically and well. Our fielding was up to expectations and we obtained a number of run outs and took some outstanding catches. Vishan Wijeyaratne – solid left arm swing bowler and once he learns not to bowl too short will reap further rewards. Another under 15 who should do well next season. We did have 5 of the squad already playing in our grade teams and it was hoped the experience gained by those players would carry them and the fair way in the Competition. Unfortunately this was not the case Nikhil Ramrakha – good right arm offie with another season in front of him at this level. With 8 wickets shared the most wickets for the team. We were hindered by the loss of our skipper, James Matthey due to injury after 2 rounds. Max Newman stepped into the role and did an admirable job. . Braden Cheng – Braden still has a further 2 seasons of Green Shield and with maturity should develop into a useful bowler who will play an important part in our attack. As for the players themselves I offer the following comments:- Jonathon Yogarajah –good opening bowler who needs to work on his run-up. While his stats weren’t graet he performed well in 5’s and needs to continue to work hard to get further rewards. Max Newman – a tidy wicketkeeping effort who continues to improve. Max’s keeping was amongst the best in the Competition and was probably unlucky not ot make the combined team. His batting was sound and with his good work ethic he will make a significant contribution to the Club in future seasons. Prasanna Bhaskaran- also needs some work on his run up but it was good to see him mature and playa role in grade cricket as the season went on. Tom Lamont - Attacking and fluent strokemaker with the ability to dominate in the middle order. Tom Matson- Tom didn’t do justice to his ability in averaging only 10 with the bat. He will need to work hard on his approach to the game to maximize that ability. Michael Galbraith - Skilful top order bat and left arm spinner. Needs to keep up the hard work to capitalise on his ability over the next few seasons. Damian Ireland – Damian works hard at his game and with that attitude more success will come his way. Bull, as a player (including First Grade) and outstanding administrator at all levels of the game. Mr. Bull joined Balmain in 1901, was elected to the Management Committee in 1904 and was appointed Honorary Secretary of the Club in 1909, a post he held until 1939. He was made a Life Member of the Club in 1922 and succeeded his father as President in 1939, a position he held until his death in 1957. Mr. Bull was a delegate to the NSWCA for 46 years and a member of the Executive Committee for 36 years. He was elected a Life Member of the NSWCA in 1937. Mr. Bull managed an Australian side to New Zealand in 1928 and was Treasurer of the 1934 Ashes team to England. This trophy was given for competition between players in Grades 1 to 5 and is competed for on a points basis covering Batting, Bowling and Fielding. Kerry was a foundation member of the Women’s club when they joined with the Balmain District Cricket Club in 1982. Since 1982, in addition to playing with the Club, has been President of the women’s division, coach and selector. Kerry represented NSW during the 1980’s. Frederick William Bennett joined Balmain in 1938 and served the Club for an amazing 57 years until his untimely passing on Australia Day, 1995. He was an excellent wicketkeeper batsman who made his First Grade debut in the 1940/41 season, just prior to joining the 2nd/4th Australian Army Regiment with which he served in New Guinea and the Solomon Islands reaching the rank of Lieutenant. After rejoining Balmain in 1945, Fred continued his First and later Second Grade career with considerable success, culminating in his leading our Second Grade side to the premiership in 1953/54. Fred was appointed to the Club Committee as Assistant Honorary Secretary in 1946 and held this position until appointed Honorary Secretary in 1949. For the next 27 years, Fred did a remarkable job looking after the Club as its major custodian. In 1976 he took over the Presidency from Cliff Winning and held this position until his passing. His administrative skills were very widely recognised and led to his appointment to the NSWCA where he served in many capacities including Chairman for nine years from 1954/55. Fred served on the Australian Cricket Board from 1967 to 1988 and was its Chairman from 1983-1987. He managed several Australian Touring sides in the period from 1969 to 1981 and was recognised by all as a great bloke and great administrator. He was regarded by the players as one of the best Managers ever to take a team away. Fred was honoured with three Life Memberships, Balmain District Cricket Club in 1956, the New South Wales Cricket Association in 1959 and the MCC in 1980. To complement these honours, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1980 for services to sport. The Committee, in commissioning this trophy, acted as it believed Fred would have wished in presenting it for the Outstanding First Grade Player. It was decided that the Committee would award this trophy on the basis of assessment in the following categories: Playing Performance, Citizenship, Conduct, Training Attendance and General Contribution to the Club. Bull who was Honorary Secretary from 1910-1939 and President from 1939-1956. Todd Tanner joined Balmain in 1920, was elected to the Management Committee in 1921 and, on numerous occasions, acted as its Chairman. His service to the Club in this capacity continued until his death in 1956 without his missing a Committee meeting. Todd Tanner was a delegate to the NSWCA and other cricket bodies on behalf of the Club for many years and was elected a Life Member in 1935. His greatest cricketing achievement was the taking of all 10 wickets for 32 runs in a C&S Match in 1920, closely followed by 145 runs (still a record), during which he clouted many sixes into Snail’s Bay at Birchgrove. He was one of the most ardent supporters of Poidevin-Gray and AW Green Shield Cricket. So, in keeping with what would have been his wish, the Club put forward this trophy to perpetuate the memory of a wonderful servant. It was decided that all players under 21 years of age who play in our grade sides would be eligible for the trophy. The same points formula as utilised for the WC Bull trophy applies. Archie Jackson was Balmain’s youngest Interstate and International Representative who succumbed to Tuberculosis at only 23 years of age in February, 1933. In 1926/27, after showing tremendous promise as a schoolboy, he amassed, at the tender age of 17, a First Grade aggregate of 870 runs in only 12 innings (2 not outs), including five centuries at an average of 87.00. He was chosen the same season to play for NSW for whom he scored two centuries and three fifties. Test Match representation came in February 1929 in Adelaide (Fourth Test) when he recorded a top score of 162 on debut v England – an innings which brought him cricketing immortality. Archie played for Balmain from 1924 to 1932 scoring 11 centuries, represented NSW on 23 occasions scoring 1858 runs at an average of 54.64 and played in eight Tests, scoring 474 runs at 47.40. From 2004-05 it was decided that this trophy would be presented to the UTS Balmain Grade team finishing the season in the highest position in their competition. Colin played in an era when First Grade cricket was of a very high standard, but was deprived of competing permanently at that level because of the controversial nature of his excellent fastish off-break deliveries … but by no means was this a unanimous opinion. Nevertheless, Colin accepted these reversals like the great sportsman he was and continued to give the Club yeoman service on and off the field right up to the time of his untimely passing. It was determined that this trophy should be awarded to the First Grade bowler who topped the Club’s First Grade averages. To be eligible, the player must have taken a minimum of 15 wickets. From 2001-02 season, it was decided that this award would be presented each year to the best bowler in 1st Grade based on aggregate. To emphasise the importance of this facet of the game, the award is restricted to AW Green Shield players on the recommendation of that team’s manager. From 2004-05, it was decided, however, that this trophy be presented to the Most Valuable Player in the AW Green Shield team. He was closely associated with our late President, F.W. Bennett OBE, in many of the latter’s sporting goods enterprises and used a variety of his talents, including First Grade team manager, to ensure as high a degree of off field efficiency as possible. His all round efficiency was also recognised by the NSWCA which appointed him manager of a number of minor representative teams. The trophy is awarded annually for consistent displays of unsolicited service, citizenship and service beyond the call of duty or obligation. Bill Donaldson was one of Balmain’s greatest and longest serving players, playing with the Club from 1937 to 1961. Bill was a prolific run-scorer with two double centuries and 11 centuries to his name. He made the highest individual score ever in Balmain 1st Grade with 246 not out in 1947/48 and has the highest average in 1st Grade with 135.16 also in 1947/48. Bill also scored two centuries for NSW, both coincidentally against Western Australia. From 2004-05, it was decided that this trophy be presented to the Most Conscientious Trainer, replacing the Yorkshire Logic Challenge Shield. The winner is the player who attends practice regularly and puts in at all times. Bert, who was born at Ryde in 1878 joined Balmain in the 1902/03 season playing just two matches in 2nd Grade , before progressing to the clubs’ 1st Eleven .where he played with moderate success in this season as well as in 1903/04. During his spectacular career with Balmain he scored some 5908 runs (5869 in 1st grade) at an average of 32.03 and took 549 wickets(539 in 1st grade) at an average of 19.75. Bert was missing for 1904/05, 1905/06, 1906/07 and 1907/08 seasons(it was not known where he played), however returned for the 1908/09 season and remained a First grade fixture until the end of the1922/23 season when he announced his retirement. .He was persuaded to come back in 1925/26, however decided to finally In 8 seasons , Bert topped the clubs 1st Grade batting averages and in 7 seasons topped the 1st Grade bowling figures. He took the greatest number of wickets in Sydney First grade in 1910/11 and 1916/17 seasons and topped the Sydney Ist Grade bowling averages in 100 1910/11 and 1911/12. Added to this Bert managed to take two hat tricks in Sydney 1st Grade competitions., the first against Petersham in 1910/11 and the second against Gordon in 1917/18. Col Jefferies With the bat Bert made 13 First Grade centuries in his 178 first grade innings and converted two of these to double figures with 241* v Sydney in 1910/11 and 202* v Paddington in 1910/11. Bert was also the Ist Grade captain from 1910/11 to 1922/23. During the 1910/11 season, Bert was chosen for NSW for whom he was chosen intermittently up until the 1920/21 season. His playing career with NSW consisted of some 15 matches where he batted on 22 occasions for 281 runs-Highest score 61- for an average of 13.33.With the ball he took 45 wickets at an average of 26.97 with his best being 7/65. . Bert caught the Australian selectors eyes at the end of the1913/14 season and was chosen as a member of the Australian team to tour SOUTH AFRICA in 1914/15. Unfortunately for Bert this tour was cancelled due to the outbreak of war. Whilst we have had several Australian representatives, Bert was the first player from the Balmain club to be chosen for AUSTRALIA Bert’s contribution to Balmain was not just on the playing field, as he was a member of the club’s management committee from 1910 to 1927, and a First grade selector from 1910 to 1922. During his time at Balmain, Bert was at his happiest when advising youngsters about this great game, not only how to play the game, but also about becoming good sportsmen and team players. This wonderful player who was placed in high affection by all those who came into contact with him, as well as being a thorough gentleman whose knowledge and love of the cricket was second to none, was rewarded in 1922 for his marvellous contribution to Balmain over a very long period , with LIFE MEMBERSHIP. Sadly he passed on in January 1937 at the age of 58 years and just before Balmain took out its second First Grade premiership .
