With the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan we at Herman Miller have heavy hearts and deep concern for everyone affected by the disaster. Our Herman Miller Tokyo colleagues and dealer partners are safe, but we know the road ahead will be difficult, in particular for those at the Sendai ErgoKiosk outlet. I know I speak for the entire Herman Miller family when I say that we will all stand up and provide the strength to help with Japan’s recovery. “The strength of POSH is a welcome addition to our family.” At the same time, I am excited to share the news that Herman Miller and POSH Office Systems are announcing an agreement that will, upon its expected completion later this summer, bring POSH into the Herman Miller corporate family. Jeremy Hocking Vice President, Herman Miller Asia Pacific The foundation for our shared future was established during a successful marketing and distribution alliance, begun in October 2008. In these past few years working together we have confirmed our like-minded passion for innovative, high quality interior solutions for working and living spaces. Equally important we found that our company cultures were well matched, with both organizations committed to good corporate citizenship through design, environmental stewardship, and high standards in the quality and care for our employees and the communities in which we operate. The strength of POSH is a welcome addition to our family. Please visit their beautiful new showroom, the NetWork Centre, in Hong Kong. And ever since its launch, this collection has garnered the world’s attention. Setu has received several international awards including the Red Dot Award, Gold in Multipurpose Seating category and Silver in Lounge category at the NeoCon. It was also one of the finalists at the 2010 Australian International Design Awards and it recently earned a prestigious “Design of the Decade” Gold award as well as the “Best Sustainable Design Solution” from The Industrial Designers Society of America. So, what is the sustainable design of Setu? Setu provides its greater flexibility to all the places we work and now gets prepared to extend its positive impact on your living. In April/ May, Herman Miller will introduce Setu upholstered. It is the latest Setu innovation that combines the aesthetic character of leather/ textile with suspension material performance. You can choose from a wide range of colours and can be easily matched with your workplace or home setting. “ Setu provides its greater flexibility to all the places we work and now gets prepared to extend its positive impact on your living. ” For the chair that goes anywhere, the addition of suspended upholstery will now allow it to wear anything. So, what’s next for Setu? We plan to take Setu beyond the seating category and extend its sustainable design to a range of tables such as coffee table, dinning table, bar table etc, and a series of wooden bases including wooden base for multipurpose chairs, lounges and ottomans, stools and tables. Setu is a great example of our commitment to problem-free design and anticipating the needs of our society. On March 11, 2011, we opened the doors to a brand new showroom by POSH at Taikoo Place in Hong Kong. Here are the excerpts from the interview with Marcus Foley, Group Managing Director of PDM International. Marcus is the architect who piloted the design of the new space. Interview with Marcus Foley, PDM International “HK is a great city in its acceptance to forward thinking design.” Can you tell us a little bit about your history in Hong Kong? How long have you had an office here? PDM was founded in Singapore in 1996 by Marcus Foley and Dennis Lim, the Hong Kong office was established in 2001 to mainly service our existing client base. Today it has evolved into our regional hub and is pivotal in the running of our 8 regional offices with a strong focus on high level design projects. It is recognised as one of the leading design practises in HK. Are there any trends in the design of spaces in Hong Kong right now? What are they? Where do they come from? HK is a great city in its acceptance to forward thinking design. The trends we are seeing now are the breakdown of the old habits. The office of today is more open plan and benches combined with multi functional trendy style work place solutions are what PDM is implementing. The mobility created by technology has seen new trends in the workspace, thus revitalising the aftermath of the financial crisis. Using space more efficiently and allowing greater productivity will be the future trend. Was there anything particularly challenging or inspiring about working on the new POSH showroom? What is your favourite part of the new space? Bringing together a multipurpose space that could respond to showcasing products, an event space, enhance end user experience and be well received by the design community was a challenge. The warehouse style space was a great canvas for us to start, to bring Herman Miller and POSH to a new level in Product | Relationships | Events | Lifestyle | Authenticity | Desirable Spaces | Coming Soon | Snapshot pg. _5 03 HK. During our creative journey we decided to implement a full size shipping container in the space. This represented the iconic branding of Herman Miller. It provided a great visual impact from outside and inside the space as well as an area to showcase the history of the brand. Sourcing the container, implementing the fitting and raising the container inside the showcase brought many challenges, however, the final result speaks for itself. We do believe that the space will be successful for all its varying functions and be well received by the design community and end users, which for us was the excitement of this commission. What inspires your work? Our work is inspired by the use of space and how this space creates a visual stimulation and creates a mood reflecting the use of this space. To work in 3 dimensional ideas whilst planning and combining with a strong concept, results in designing a great space. Our inspiration is to see and feel this space whilst looking at how materials enhance the overall theme, and desire outcome. We do not require the perfect space to do amazing work. It’s the pursuit of design excellence and creating a great finished space that requires the designer to look at space in many ways to get the result. We also always try to stay ahead of trends to push the design boundaries and do what we do, better each time. Starting his tour in cold and crisp Tokyo, Yves captivated the audience during his lecture at Axis Gallery. Yves then took part in a discussion facilitated by Lucas BB, editor-in-chief of PAPRESKY magazine in the Herman Miller Tokyo Store which inspired the whole audience. The launch of SAYL during the evening session was a huge success with three Japanese creative professionals using SAYL in different settings. “Yves captivated his audience during his lecture at Axis Gallery” Singapore had a similar reaction where an energetic crowd enjoyed the show as models paraded down the catwalk with the SAYL chair. The design press were out in force with Yves doing nine interviews in just three hours. Over in the harbour city of Sydney, the design audience and the media were delighted with the opportunity to meet Yves and hear the story behind SAYL. After arriving by water taxi Yves charmed the local media and designers alike in a gorgeous setting overlooking the water. Thanks to all our sponsors in each city, to Herman Miller in the USA and to Yves Béhar and the team at fuseproject for making it all come together. Did we hear you asking why? Because on 11th December 2010, the company opened a directly-owned and managed store - a first for Herman Miller ever. The excitement doubled up when we witnessed 1,400 guests queued up for a brief look at the preview party held on December 8th. The ecstatic crowd, champagne, music, and live painting performance by Mustone, an emerging Japanese street artist - the store and the live office upstairs were totally thrilled with excitement. “The store provides the company a way to raise awareness for its brand in a growing market. ” The store is full of brilliantly designed items, large and small, including ergonomic work chairs and desks to the timeless but fresh “classic line” by designers such as Eames and Nelson, as well as a line-up of products from lighting and stationery to books and toys, supporting a work lifestyle for the future. Designed by Torafu Architects, the store in Marunouchi provides the company a way to raise awareness for its brand in a growing market. And now the shopping is not just simple but it is also a lot of fun. You can just walk right in and take a look. Visitors will experience a comfortable, relaxing, “at home” atmosphere with several specially designed areas, like the “Try a Chair” section where they can sit, twirl and experiment to find just the right fit. Product | Relationships | Events | Lifestyle | Authenticity | Desirable Spaces | Coming Soon | Snapshot pg. _8 03 The new location of Herman Miller has two floors -- the street level floor is the store and we have a live office upstairs. Both in the store and the live office, we hold monthly events for individual consumers and for the B2B industry customers. The store received over 5,000 customers in two months which averages at 500 a day. The press coverage was centred on the grand opening of the world’s first retail store. It is our first store since the Textiles and Objects store sells only fabrics and objects in New York (1960 -67). But when it comes to furniture, this is our first store. It is the most important touchpoint of the brand with all the stakeholders including the consumers, design community and business people. We plan to hold a monthly event both in the store and in the office space. The first two monthly events were a great success! It is a place where steep, unpopulated forest hangs centimetres from hyper-condensed urban centres, fishing villages snuggle next to towering skyscrapers of lights, and street food can be found alongside five star international cuisines. In October 2010, I moved to Hong Kong, and as one of the 7 million people in this city, it’s clear that I am simply a platelet in the Hong Kong circulatory system. My transportation happens mostly in tubes. The MTR (subway) sucks me across the island and over to Kowloon, and then when I exit it is more than likely that I get vacuumed up in an elevator to our office (on the 40th floor) or to my apartment (on the 30th floor). It seems like I spend more time high above ground or well below it than I do on the actual surface. When I do walk around it’s often on one of many raised walkways that connect the parts and pieces of the city. Transportation and connectivity here are amazing. “Life in Hong Kong is fast stimulating for all of the senses. Come visit! ” Often, in an effort to stay grounded and see the city, I ride the old-school tram to and from work. The tram is a double-decker trolley that runs on tracks along the length of Hong Kong Island. It’s a brilliant throwback to the Hong Kong of years ago. Since it’s open-air, I like to sit on the top level and relax on what is always a slow journey. I live in an area of town known as Sai Ying Pun. It is famous for being a gigantic dried fish market. It’s dried fish as far as the eye can see. As you can imagine, it’s also dried fish as far as the nose can smell. Life in Hong Kong is fast stimulating for all of the senses. Come visit! By Carissa Carter When Douglas Engelbart invented the first computer mouse in 1963, it was a big step up from controlling on-screen cursors with written pieces of computer code. The mouse was the only industry standard for forty-five years as it evolved through different mechanisms, such as track balls and optical sensors, as well as multiple form factors. The mouse has had serious staying power, though it’s now accompanied by other control technologies. Track pads are incorporated into most laptop brands, though the ability to scroll and touch with more than one finger was invented by Apple. This technology, called ‘multi-touch,’ paved the way for the currently ubiquitous pinch, squeeze, swipe, and expand finger movements that most young children now expect electronic devices to respond to. Add an accelerometer to the mix (the magic behind the Nintendo Wii controller) and devices like the iPhone have become more popular for their apps and games than to use as a telephone. “Gestural recognition controllers allow you to wave your hand in the air to move something across your screen.” It’s only natural that the next wave of controllers eliminates the device altogether. Gestural recognition controllers allow you to wave your hand in the air to move something across your screen. Using a combination of cameras and image processing, these controllers are behind new devices such as the Kinect for Xbox 360, a video game system where the player jumps up and down and moves his or her body to play the game. What’s next? Eye-tracking will soon become ubiquitous, as will control through facial expression. However, some of the most exciting technology will come in the way of affective computing. Controllers that use affective computing recognize visual aesthetics, gestures, expressions and even the level of emotion embedded in speech. Combined together they allow the computer to provide a personal and relevant response to the individual user. Just think…in a few years your computer will be able to realize you’ve become bored and will be able to spark enthusiasm or send you home early. By Chanda Gohrani Jack Kelley, yes he is the same designer who worked side-by-side with Robert Propst throughout the 60s and early 70s. He played a pivotal role in the design of many Action Office components. He did that work as a researcher/ designer for the Herman Miller Research Corporation, headed at that time by Robert Propst, inventor of another world’s first: the Action Office system. Kelly had been captivated by computers since 1969, when he worked at the Stanford Research Institute with Douglas Engelbart, inventor of the world’s first computer mouse. The mouse needed a pad, so Kelley designed it--the world’s first mouse pad, an invention that brought him great satisfaction and an early understanding of the complexities of working in computer environments. “The mouse needed a pad, so Kelley designed it--the world’s first mouse pad” Kelley does more than stay abreast of the latest technological developments. He gets out into the real work world, meeting faceto-face with the people whose lives he’s trying to make better--and more healthful. By Caroline Perry In the 16 years since it launched, the Aeron chair has transformed the world of office seating. This year Herman Miller Asia Pacific will be holding the first ever pan-Asia Pacific Aeron Hockey Championships.
