Community and School News and Stories Written By Selah School District Students Sentinel Volume 3, Issue 23 February 13, 2014 Valentine’s Day Stories by all Selah District Students Price: free! How did Valentine’s Day start? I always wonder how Valentine’s Day started, the whole story of it. Valentine’s Day is a unique holiday! by Kayla Raap For starters, Valentine’s Day is actually called Saint Valentine’s Day. Supposedly, Saint Valentine was imprisoned; this was because he was performing weddings for forbidden soldiers to marry ministering Christians. So he likes to help people get married even though they aren't supposed to. How cute, a love story! He had a little something special going on with his keepers daughter, and so as a Farwell he said “from your valentine” according to the legend. It all makes sense now this is probably why we say will you be my valentine? Everything makes sense. Today Valentine’s Day is celebrated by showing a person that you love them. In some place’s people don’t have to work on Valentine’s Day. Surprisingly the phrase “valentine” came from England because they give the people they love flowers and a card and they called it valentine. What about cupid? Now I know what you are thinking, how does cupid come into play on Valentine’s Day? Cupid was very popular in the middle ages. Cupid is an icon of Valentine’s Day, I’m guessing it’s because he is portrayed as the son of love .Cupid is a Greek myth. FCCLA by Amy Compton FCCLA is a student lead organization run by the youth of America. FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. They are a non-profit organization that runs through grade 12 and is made up of men, women, and leaders. The leaders of Selah, Washington and Washington alone include Garrhett Petrea, who is the State President, and Hunter James, who is the President of Selah Junior High School. The teachers who teach Family Consumer Science classes in schools often become leaders of the chapters. A chapter is the portion of FCCLA located at schools. Family and Consumer Science has been a gateway for students to make a difference in their societal and community’s issues and have been making a difference in their families, careers, and communities. Chapters are located in all fifty states and also Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. There are 5,500 chapters with more than 200,000 members in the whole of FCCLA. Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America excels in teenage issues, such as teenage pregnancy, drug or substance abuse, family relationships, career exploration, teen violence and a variety of other issues. FCCLA gives America’s youth the chance to improve their planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making, interpersonal communication, and career preparation. The mission of FCCLA is as follows: “To promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Sciences education. Focusing on the multiple roles of family member, wage earner and community leader, members develop skills for life through: character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation.” The purposes of FCCLA are to provide, promote, strengthen, encourage, and prepare. They strive to provide opportunities for personal development, preparation for adult life, making decisions and assuming responsibilities. They aim to promote a better understanding between youth and adults and promote Family and Consumer Sciences and related occupations. They make an effort to strengthen the function of a family as a basic unit of society. They endeavor to encourage democracy through cooperative action in the home and community, as well as individual and group involvement in harmony and cooperation across the globe. The history of FCCLA goes back to 1945 when it was founded in Chicago, Illinois. At the time it was under the name of FHA, or Future Homemakers of America. In 1965, FHA combined with HERO, (Home Economics Related Occupations) which was a black organization. In 1983, they started star events and national cluster meetings, which are still incorporated with FCCLA today. FCCLA became FCCLA in 1999 when FHA and HERO changed the name and excelled with better representatives, purpose, and meaning. FCCLA is the only one out of eight CTSO’s (Career Technology Student Organization) who focuses on family. They focus on changing functions and the families themselves for the better. They are involved in supporting and helping the community in which they live. FCCLA helps give students and America’s future the 21st century skills they will need. They help create and characterize students and people into the people that employers will want and need. FCCLA creates work ethic for America and gives job skills to America’s youth. The requirements of those who can join FCCLA differ depending on the region. Eligibility is different across the nation. Different regions change or adjust the limitations for entry. In most places it starts in middle school, specifically sixth grade. And school with a facts program or an adequate advisor is a place to have FCCLA. Washington State Official, Garrhett Petrea's response to the question of if FCCLA is difficult is merely “Nothing is difficult if you have the right mindset.” He says that it’s not only for the “smart people,” but those with work ethic and who is willing to work with others. In FCCLA, the goal is to do one community involvement activity a month, if not more. They do things like canned food drives, for dogs and people, Breast Cancer Awareness activities, “Dresses for Africa” in which they make dresses for young girls in Africa, and Adopt-A-Family. On a more personal level, some of the things Garrhett does is he guides and helps his fellow State Officers, he helps plan state meetings and promotes the awareness of FCCLA. He records ideas and gives inspiration and imagination to the whole of FCCLA. He does various things and always competes. FCCLA often indirectly works with other FCCLA communities. As State President, Garrhett is asked to attend regional events in order to throw out great ideas. He also helps with work. FCCLA Week is a national thing that is done with many other FCCLA communities. This year, this special weeks falls on February 10th to February 14th. During this time, people of FCCLA all around the nation represents, promotes, and supports each other and FCCLA. During this week members of the program wear red and white, promote themselves with dates and posters, appreciate teachers and recognize advisors, and do many other things in benefit of FCCLA. If you live close by, FCCLA is setting up a game of dodge ball on February 18th and it is twenty dollars for a team of six people. It is a community thing with teams made up of groups of people like policemen and many people of our community. You can find more information in Mrs. McCartney’s room at the High School. Regionals for FCCLA are huge. It is when all of the State presidents and vice presidents get together in one big meeting-like event. Numerous schools in each region get together to promote FCCLA and have a good time. Hunter James, Selah Junior High School FCCLA President, has been with this program for two years now. He loves being in FCCLA because its a nice way to give back to the community. To him, the importance of FCCLA is that it is a great leadership skill and it brings all kinds of interesting people and leaders of our country together. It has changed his life by showing him the importance of helping others and the community. He believes that if FCCLA was non-existent, it would change the community. In his chapter, they focus on family first and helping the community. Hunter says that he joined because he heard some friends talk about it. Once he joined, he thought it was boring, then found himself disappointed it was over. It got intriguing and interesting. Once it was over he wanted to get right back to work. He says he is so glad he joined FCCLA. The best part is seeing the faces of people when they do crazy community activities. The joy and relief shows on their face. Their faces are priceless. Hunter wants people of all kinds to join. It would be nice for everyone to be a part and make a difference in lives of students and the community. For Garrhett Petrea, the importance of FCCLA goes back to the basis of the foundation: family. After being strangers for so long, FCCLA brought Garrhett and his brother together. The very situation between him and his brother exemplifies the basis of FCCLA. Garrhett and his brother were strangers and now, thanks to the program, they are not only close, but best friends. Much of which Garrhett finds interesting in FCCLA is the fact they are incredibly involved with the community. He mentioned that there is no greater good than what you can do for the public and what you can do for others. The bond between FCCLA and the neighborhood is one that is strong and will never be broken. Garrhett believes that FCCLA is something good and that “he’s all in.” For Garrhett, the greatest motivation from FCCLA is the people themselves. This includes seeing a difference in what the work does and who you have helped. Also when a person who is unaware of how to speak in front of large groups of people, go to places like star events and be so open and free when giving a presentation. He finds motivation in a person who gains confidence and when the confidence change is noticeable internally and externally. Garrhett started FCCLA when he was in ninth grade at the High School, whereas ninth graders generally start at the Junior High. He was determined to be involved in what was going on around him. FCCLA is what he wanted to do. His biggest inspiration was Mrs. McCartney. A sensational woman who works at the High School and has been next to Garrhett through thick and thin. She was his biggest help. One of the biggest things wondered about Garrhett is if he is to stay a part of FCCLA once he graduates. His response to this was a delighted and joyful “you can’t just quit.” He says he will always stay involved and can join associates. Garrhett, other than being FCCLA Washington State Officer, participates in National Honors Society, Youth Wyldlife, Young Life, baseball, and is the co-owner of “All About Fun.” He is Junior Class President and is a School State Representative. He is incredibly skilled and excels at anything put in front of him. He attacks assignments and challenges with spontaneity and creativity. He’s known by most everyone and inspires everyone to be true to themselves and supports them regardless of differences. Garrhett Petrea is an inspiration to us all and is the perfect person to represent Selah High School. Dear Ashley, I’m not sure if I like the snow or not. It has its pro’s and con’s. What do you think about it? When I was younger I loved the snow because I went sledding with my brothers and it made Christmas feel even more real. Now that I’m driving it can be very nerve-racking to see snow outside. It’s even more nerve-racking for me to drive in the snow because since I’m a twin and we share a car I always have a passenger. I know this may sound terrible, but if I’m driving someone in the snow or not I would rather have something happen to me than the other person if we got into an accident. I couldn’t live with the other person getting hurt or killed. Driving is a very serious matter and shouldn’t be taken lightly. If you’re driving in the snow it feels completely different. You can hear the snow beneath you, your car can slide and at times you may not be able to see. I live on a hill so I have to be sure I keep my momentum. I hope that when you’re driving that you’re very careful and you think of your safety, as well as others. Flappy Bird By Jacob Frampton Flappy Bird is a game created for all ages and can be downloaded from almost every game server, it climbed to the top of IOS, Android and Google play app stores quickly within its release and making it a must have app for your device(s). The object of the game is to keep your small 8-bit bird that has flight issues, in the air and fly it through metal green pipes that have a changing height position and try to not let the bird run into any of them or the bird dies. Every time you make it through a pipe you receive one point and after you get through ten pipes (10 points) you get a medal. This game makes almost every player angered because it seems like such an easy principle to keep the bird in the air but when you attempt the game, you realize how hard the game is. This makes the game addicting for those who find the game difficult because the human mind thinks that if something is easy then it will try to accomplish it, then when it finds out how difficult the game is it becomes addicted to trying to finish the game. Many find this addiction angering or frustrating and has been on ifunny featured and is an internet sensation. Many believe that the game from different app stores is easier or harder but it is the same game just with minor graphical feature changed to the other types of phones or usage that goes through different app stores. The game is built of a mathematical problem that gauges the height and speed of each flap of the bird, and also the differentiation and space between each opening in the pipes. This game proves that there is a little craziness and addiction inside everyone, and we should embrace it. Angel Villa Retirement Essay In fifty years the world will be changed in some ways but stay the same in others. One thing that for sure will change will be cars and their mpg. The millage will be increased dramatically and with that gas stations will have to close or make their prices rise so gas will be more expensive in order for you to have cars 100 plus mpg. There will also be an increase in electric cars. At every gas station there will be a charger for electric cars. this is how cars will change in the future. In fifty years there will be newer ways to communicate with that is faster and better. All electronics will be upgrade beyond our imagination. There will also be newer planes to carry more people. The speed of the planes would increase so we can arrive to our destination in minutes to 3-4 hours. We will probably have other ways to travel like bullet trains set state to state. Fifty years from now our nation will change for the better and we will have better items available to use. For example one could be that most our shopping for essentials except food would probably be online. Company‘s will have faster delivery available like drones that amazon was going to use. Our lives will change because in fifty years humans will also advance in medicine. This will allow more people to be in a healthier state and will expand the average human lifespan by a small or large amount. Our schools will also advance by making our education grater so we may be more educated as a country. Also it will allow the future generation to expand and get better at building cars ,causing less pollution, solar power, building better ways to travel, and better medicine to prevent sickness and cure diseases that today we cannot. Fanfiction Two- By Kyla Ray I was gazing into the most beautiful hazel eyes you could ever imagine. They were such a bright color, so full of life and joy, always hiding behind a mask. But those eyes also carried many secrets, regrets that no one, not even I understood. As I watched Robin walk away, putting his mask back into place, I kind of stood there motionless, as if time had stopped. Why did he come to my room after the game? What was the point of that disgustingly surprising act of pinning me to my own wall? I sighed, pulling off my royal blue cloak and hung it in my closet. I laid down on my bed, suddenly overwhelmed with drowsiness. It was now morning, probably about 5 a.m. I quickly stumbled out of bed, not exactly willing to face any of the Titans today. “I’ll pay a visit to Azarath, see how it’s doing and such.” Pulling on a new black leotard and blue cloak, I chanted a few spells and made my way to Azarath. The way to Azarath is not as simple as walking through a portal door. You have to chant spells similar to my usual “Azarath, Metrion, Zinthos” several times and then open yourself to being pulled through. Through all this, you must keep your emotions calm and prepared. After travelling through the bluish passageway, I made it to my home. Azarath was what modern people would call “Ruins.” Tall white buildings much similar to Damascus were erected into the soft orange-blue sky. A few black ravens were huddled around certain spots, and everywhere you looked, you’d see tall stone statues resembling the monks of Azarath. I made my way into town, not seeing very many people, but that was usual. What was unusual though, in which made my insides turn in all directions, was a single white dove lying motionless on the ground. Fear rushed through me, like water breaking through a dam. Taking to the sky, I flew up to where the center of town was, my childhood home. As I landed, I noticed no other doves around. Pushing my way into the building, I came face-to-face with one of the things I had always feared would happen. Arella, my mother, was motionless on a bed, looking ever so peaceful and quiet. “Arella!” I cried out, tears threatening my eyes. “Mother, wake up!! Mother, you have to wake up! You can’t be dead! Azarath needs you, I need you! Mother…” The tears I had been holding back finally overflowed, rushing down my very pale cheeks. I felt as though my world had shattered, like a piece of glass dropped on a cement flooring. “Who could have done this to you?” I whispered, unable to speak any louder or higher than that. “Arella died because of illness, my student.” I quickly turned around to see one of the monks who had raised me standing there, looking much older than I had last seen him. “A great illness had spread through Azarath, that is why you do not see many people. But you cannot let this bring you down so. You have a duty now, Raven.” “What would that be?” I snapped, not actually meaning to but with all that has happened, I just lost it. “That would be taking over in your mother’s place. You are now the Queen of Azarath.” I felt my eyes widen, the tears suddenly evaporating as realization hit me. I had completely forgotten that Arella was the Queen of Azarath, and as her child by blood, I was to take the throne. “But, I can’t. I have other duties as well, promises made to my friends on Earth. I’m sorry, but someone else has to do it.” As I turned around to fly back to the Titan Tower, a firm hand grasped my arm and held me in place. “You must be our Queen. If you do not, you will endure many consequences, especially your ranking in the Azarath Academy.” His tone was quite harsh, and yet gentle. Teen Titans I narrowed my violet eyes at him, somewhat shocked by his words. “I made a promise. Queens do not last long, but promises last an eternity. I am going to stay by my friends and serve them until they no longer need me. You can’t stop me, and Arella never wanted me to remain here. So lay off, monk.” Feeling lousy, I quickly flew away from him, heading back to where I had started. I opened the portal once more, my violet hair blowing gently in the breeze as I crossed through, making it back to my bedroom. Pulling my hood on once more, I stepped out of my room and peered down the hallway. You could hear Beast Boy and Cyborg still arguing over their video game. Stepping into the living room, I saw Cyborg and Beast Boy shoving each other as Starfire watched, transfixed into the video game. Robin was not present in the room, making me think he must’ve been in his room or in the gym. I sighed softly, my mind still focused on the offer given to me. “Queen of Azarath…” I muttered to myself. “I don’t know if I can handle that…and my friends…” Starfire must’ve heard my voice because before I had the chance to turn around, I was squeezed tightly by her, a smile spread across her face. “Friend Raven, you have returned!! You were in your room this whole time. Please, what is it that you have done??” Her green eyes glanced over at the tv screen before meeting my amethyst gaze once more. “I was meditating. Where’s Robin? I need to talk to him.” She studied me for a minute before telling me that he was indeed in the gym training. “Thanks, Star. Maybe we’ll go to the mall later.” I tried to imply a small smile before returning into the hallway, making my way over to the gym. I poked my head in and caught sight of Robin, only instead of wearing his usual red and green uniform, he was wearing a skin tight black tanktop and shorts, his usual workout outfit. His hair was obviously wet from, and yet he still wore that mask of his. ‘That mask,’ I recalled the night before, when he had taken it off. I walked further in. “Hey Robin. I see you’re still training.” Robin quickly turned around, shooting me one of his charming smiles. “Hey Raven. Of course I’m still training, especially now that Slade’s back in the picture. So what’s up with you? Did you want to train with me?” He smirked a bit, as if challenging me to a fight. I couldn’t resist smirking back, but let it fade as I remembered what I was there for. “I need to talk to you. It’s…well, I need some insight.” Robin studied me a moment, taking in my slouched posture and instantly knew something was up. He wrapped his towel around his neck and led me over to one of the benches, where the both of us sat. “What kind of insight? What’s going on, Raven?” I sighed and faced him equally. “I returned to Azarath no later than half an hour ago. I…I learned that my mother, Queen Arella is dead. But…now that she’s dead, I was given the opportunity to be the Queen in place of her. The problem is,” I swallowed hard, trying not to think of it. “The problem is that being Queen of Azarath means leaving the Titans for good. I don’t know what to do. I mean yeah, I’m the rightful heiress to the throne since royalty’s in my blood, but I made a promise to stay with you guys. I can’t break that kind of bond and trust so easily…” Robin seemed to be taking it all in, making his face unreadable. He sat silent for a few moments before placing a hand on my shoulder. “Look, no matter what you decide, we will always be friends. All 5 of us. If you want to be Queen, then I say go for it. You’d make a great leader. The Titans and I will stand by your side no matter what. Besides, we can always find a way to visit you, whether that be through our T-phones, or seeing you physically.” He flashed another one of his smiles, except this one was much sweeter. Much like the smile he gave me when I defeated my father. I felt my stomach do a few flips and a slight pinkness rose in my cheeks. Quickly looking away, I nodded and stood up. “Thanks Robin. That helps…a lot.” He stood as well and regarded me again before returning to his training. I walked out of the gym and headed into the living room, making myself a cup of tea. ‘What am I going to do?’ I thought to myself, weighing out all of my options and which ones would be most important to me. I plopped down onto the couch, watching as the boys and Starfire anticipated their video game ideas. As I drank down my tea, the ruby sphere that held my cape together started to glow as the Titan alarm went off. I sighed and quickly stood up, placing my tea cup on the table. This alarm meant business. Robin came racing out, shuffling his last shoe on and he looked at the large screen. “Who’s the target, Cy?” Cyborg typed in a few things and tracked a location on the map, narrowing his eyes. “Slade. He’s downtown, just a few hundred feet from the Pizza Place. Robin glared and set out there, along with us trailing along. “Titans, Go!!” Yogurt By Emmeline Pendlebury History: The word yogurt comes from a Turkish word meaning to curdle or to thicken. It’s possible that the earliest yogurt was made by accident in Mesopotamia around 5,000 BC when milk-producing animals were first domesticated. The milk was likely stored in bags made of the stomachs of these animals. The digestive juices and bacteria in the stomachs would make the milk coagulate and become acidic. The acidity helped keep it fresh longer. There is evidence of yogurt being use as beauty lotion and a cleaning product as early as 2,000 BC. The acidity of the yogurt helps to clean rust, dirt and clear away dead skin. Frozen Yogurt: Frozen yogurt was introduced in the 1970’s in New England under the name Frogurt. In 1978, Brigham’s, an ice cream and candy company introduced the first packaged frozen yogurt under the name of Humphreez Yogart. Around the same time Dannon made their own frozen yogurt. This variation was a raspberry yogurt product on a stick, covered in dark chocolate. Both were a healthier than ice cream, but both had a tart taste. The manufacturers added more sugar. Frozen yogurt took off in the 80’s and in the 90’s it had a 10% share of the frozen dessert market. John F. Kennedy By Carmen Nelson John Fitzgerald Kennedy, known more commonly as JFK, was born May 29th, 1917 in Brookline Massachusetts. He was the second son of nine children, his father was multimillionaire business executive and financier Joseph P. Kennedy, his mother was Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy. Kennedy attended the Canterbury parochial school and the Choate school. One teacher said that people liked him more for his personality rather than what he accomplished. Kennedy Scan to see the enrolled at Princeton University in 1935, he had to withdraw because of his SJHS website and sickness. When he got better he went to Harvard University, he majored in the back issues of government and international relations. In his junior year he went to Europe the Sentinel and where he saw the events that led up to World War II. He used what he Years of War observed for his senior paper which later turned into his book “Why England Slept”. He graduated from Harvard in 1940 with honors. Later he went to Stanford University for graduate studies. In April 1941 he attempted to enlist in the army but was turned down because of a back injury he received while playing football. Months later he enlisted in the navy (after his back strengthened) and became an intelligence officer in Washington D.C. Kennedy finally got an active duty assignment and was in Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron training. When he was 43 he was elected 35th president of the United States of America. He was the youngest to be elected for office. Some events during his presidency were the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Space Race, and the African-American Civil Rights Movement. Kennedy was the only Catholic president to win a Pulitzer Prize. In Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963 Kennedy was, sadly, assassinated. The entire United States, even the world, was mourning, people in New Delhi, India wept in the streets, Flags in Indonesia were lowered to half-mast. The African magazine Transition said, “murdered with Kennedy was the first real chance for an intelligent and new leadership in the world. His death left us unprepared and in darkness." Kennedy survived the nuclear age, the Great Depression, and both world wars. Kennedy said “Life is unfair” and it was for JFK, his life was full of glory and tragedy however he never lost his optimism, grace, or his sense of balance. To Austin! Part 2 by Damon Smith The next day was qualifying, where all of the racers would compete for the fastest lap around the 5.5 kilometre (3.4 mile) circuit for the top spaces on the pole. My family and I, of course, have specific racers we were voting for. I was voting for the now four time world champion Sebastian Vettel of Infiniti Red Bull, my sister for Jenson Button of Vodafone Mclaren-Mercedes, my mom for Romain Grosjean of Lotus Renault, and my dad for Nico Hulkenberg of Sauber. The whole day between the three qualifying sessions we switched to different spots around the track to watch. With the spots we had sat at, they helped us figure out where we would sit on race day. When qualifying was over, we were all pretty down, but were happy that we’d be returning tomorrow. Being hungry and dehydrated after the race (the heat could’ve melted us!) we started to talk about where to eat. So I suggested, again, T.G.I. Friday’s. We drove there as the day sky was turning to dawn, and as the weather started to cool down. After we were full and weren’t dying of thirst we returned “home”. We woke up a bit earlier the next day, I guess excited to be going to the race. We all were, but we dreaded the unbearable heat when we arrived. Walking to the front gates, as people on these carriage bikes rode by carrying people that were too lazy to walk along the path. Once we got to the gate, we had to wait about twenty minutes until the security people actually got there. For acceptable reasons though. There had been a suspicious bag that had been spotted by the grand stands near the first turn. It ended up being just a normal bag with nothing in it, but at least they were concerned about our safety. My mom had brought a backpack with some drinks in it for us. Four bottles of water and a couple of sodas. They wouldn't let us bring the sodas in, they threw the sodas away. But for some odd reason they let us keep the water, needless to say my mom was mad. We of course knew that they did this just so we would have to buy their products, which almost cost more than the shirts (that’s sarcasm in case you were wondering)! Nine dollars is still too much for a tiny bottle of water. After that maddening complication, we started the long journey to our spot. Which was pretty time consuming. We had to walk up the hill to the first turn, which was difficult because of the muddy ground, and then towards the second turn. We sat down at an opening where we could see almost all of turn two and part of turn one. We could also see the starting grid (the straight and where the racers line up to start). Of course we had to wait a couple more hours until the race started because we had made it to the race “early”. The pace cars drove around the track, both an Mercedes SLS AMG and C63 AMG . Looking for debris or testing the track, I guess. Then we heard the sounds of the engines, revving in the team’s garages. Everyone started to cheer, even us. The cars started to roll out onto the track, excited to see them again everyone cheered even more. As they all did a warm up lap around the track, people clapped as they drove by. Every car lined up on the grid according to their lap times in qualifying. The race was starting, but this time without hearing the F1 commentators David Hobbs, Steve Matchett, and Leigh Diffey. But that didn’t really matter, what mattered was that we were actually at a Formula 1 race. The lights came on and counted down to the green light. The drivers got ready, and once the green was signaled they were off! We watched and admired as all of the drivers took off and drove up the hill. They disappeared for a bit behind the guard rails and fences by the turn. But we were able to see smoke come up from one of the cars due to a break lock-up. Miraculously, nobody crashed into each other in the turn, we were happy for that because we knew our drivers were still going. As the cars came towards us everyone cheered, but it was so loud that you couldn't hear them. I was fine with that actually because, to me, listening to the engines were better than the endless ranting of drunk people. Then in less than three seconds they were around turn two and traveling further up the track. After a while, we could hear them getting closer. Then they were spotted by my parents around turns 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18, which we could also see from where we were sitting. It was pretty cool watching all of the cars going around turn 17, around the COTA (Circuit of the Americas) tower. The people at the top must’ve had the view of their lives, with the glass floors and everything. Then all of the cars disappeared around after turn 19, then reappeared on the straight. This happened for another 55 laps, which was much worth it. Sebastian Vettel had won, with Romain Grosjean in second and Mark Webber in third. The race was amazing all throughout, and we were very sad to see it end, which by then we all knew we had to come back next year. Walking back to the bus stop, along the long trail, we were all very happy to be able to say, “We have actually been to a Formula 1 race!” To actually be able to watch a sport, with our own eyes, that has been around for, now, 67 years was absolutely stunning. There aren’t many ways to describe it, it was just full of amazing and beautiful things. The heat was still unbearable, and people walking down the path and sitting on the bus were really tipsy, which annoyed us the most. But we made it back to the car and drove out of the parking lot. END OF PART 2 My Sport By Natalie Basham Seth Meyers Leaves SNL Taryn Mathews Hearts pounding on the court Hands ready, knees bent Leaned over, anticipating the ball Arms out, they contact with it Little bit of pain, but I don’t mind Bump Set Spike Those are the moves of volleyball Dig Serve Tip Ball goes over, comes right back Girls yell, we all work together This is volleyball This is life Every Saturday night, a tv program comes on NBC called “Saturday Night Live”, or known as SNL for short. SNL is a bunch of famous comedians doing hilarious skits. Every Saturday night they have a celebrity guest host the show, and a musical guest. These two guests star in some of the skits the comedians put on. One of the skits is continuous for every Saturday night, The Weekend Update, hosted by Seth Meyers. This skit includes fake, hilarious news, and actual news being made fun of. Seth has to keep a serious face, which of course you can see in his performances, is difficult. Seth obviously loves this job, but on Saturday, Feb 1st, That would his last time he anchored the Weekend Update. Seth isn’t completely done with show business. Seth Meyers is going to be the host of Late Night. This show was hosted by Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy will now be hosting The Tonight Show. When the first Late Night show comes on with new host, Seth Meyers, his celebrity guest will be long time SNL friend, Amy Poeler. Colin Jost and Cecily Strong will be the new anchors for The Weekend Update. Cecily Strong already has some experience. In 2013, she was Seth’s partner on SNL. Seth Meyers may be done with SNL, but not with show business. VOLLEYBALL By Corinne Pettyjohn Some people underestimate the pressures of volleyball. I still remember the first day i showed up for club practice in sixth grade. I was a nervous wreck. I couldn’t even pass a volleyball, the coaches let me on the team without even trying out because of who my dad was. I was the worst player on the team. I just remember knowing that, I, was the worst player on the team and thinking I’m going to quit. Right when I was going to walk up to the coach, I overheard the high school helpers talking about a high school player talking about a girl who quit, and when she asked her what her name was she said I don’t know. And at that exact moment, I was thinking, I don’t want to be remembered as a quieter, but as a volleyball player. So i walked up to Jennifer Quigley, our coach at the time, and asked “Can you work extra time after practice to help me?” And all she did was stare at me. And finally she said “Wow, that’s what it takes to be a strong remembered volleyball player.” So, I started working during water breaks, after practice I was working an extra 45 minutes just so I could be the very best I could be. Now I might have just made the volleyball team because of who my dad was, but, I definitely proved that I belonged on that team. Making the school volleyball team is just as much work and just as much effort as the club team. I might not have put in the extra work to make the school team as I did to make the club team but, I definitely did the best that I could do. Now the cut situation is very nerve wracking. The last day of tryouts, we all went in after practice to do a cheer and discuss the practice like always. “We have finished deciding the players on A and B.” As soon as that was said, it was dead silent. All you could hear was the heavy breathing, and seeing the sweat dripping down foreheads. “Taylor Beksinski, Maddy Quigley, Sam Dexter” As these names were being called I thought to myself I did horrible. My best wasn’t good enough. So I needed some words of encouragement. No matter what anybody says if tried your best and gave it your all you will succeed. “And Corinne Pettyjohn, alright you can go.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. They said “Alright that’s the team, everybody did great but we could only keep 24 girls.” When we got back in the locker room everybody was screaming and yelling and hugging because they were so happy they made the team. Now there is a whole different story for the girls who got cut. This was the year that we had a little extra money in the budget, so we had the intramurals team. Kind of like a C team. But some of the girls didn’t take advantage of the program or didn’t like that they didn’t make the team, so they quit. I think it’s safe to say they gave up all together and aren’t even playing volleyball anymore. So quitting gets you nowhere in life, because the people who stick with it, are the ones that play for high school, and college, and if you work hard enough, maybe even professional, or the Olympics. So don’t quit. Just recently my team U16w, had a volleyball tournament in Selah, we had to start at the Junior High, but we beat every team in pool play, so for bracket play we moved up to the High School. We were playing a Cascade team and ended up playing three games to break the tie, but it was a good game. We were behind 13 to 4, and two more points and Cascade would’ve won, but if won, we would play the U16b, which is the team above us, But then Taylor Beksinski went back to serve. There was no way we were losing this game at a chance to play Selah. So we served the ball and had a rally and we got the point! This continued for about 7 more points, until we were tied 14 to 14, but to break a tie, you have to win by 2 points. When the score was finally 14 to 16 us, we were so happy we finally got the chance to play the other Selah team. Before this game with the other Selah team, we did scrimmage them in practice with a really confusing, difficult, hard drill. So when we all got on the line to do the international wave, we were all so confident that we could win this game. Their team had first serve so we were receiving, and as soon as that ball came over, we passed the ball and got the point! We did end up losing 25 to 19, but we were still alright because we knew we came close, and we did the best we could. So thats pretty close to my life experiences of volleyball. New York City By Carissa Clark After we were in Washington Dc for 4 days we got on the bus and drove to New York. We went through New Jersey were it was raining thunder and lighting. We were on the bus for 7 hours . We were all waiting patiently then we finally made it all of us were so excited. The first stop was the Intrepid air and space museum then we all walked to the subway. The subways were really gross I saw a big rat. We all took the subway to Central Park we walked all over Central Park next was the fifth avenue walk we saw the Trump Tower , Tiffany’s . The cheapest thing in Tiffany’s was a $1,000,000 ! That’s when I ate my first New York hotdog. We then want on the subway to the Empire State Building which was very cool looking down from the top but when the wind and rain picked up you can feel the Empire State Building shaking. The 2nd day in New York we went and saw the Statue Of Liberty, 9/11 Memorial. Later that night we walked to a play called the NEWSIES it was so good after the play was done we had a group photo in downtown Times Square which is very busy on Friday nights. The final day of the whole week in Washington DC and New York. We went and saw the Today Show and we were on T.V! And then we went and toured NBC Studios were I saw Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and saw a whole bunch of other studios . After we were done there we walked and went to our workshop that was from the night before that had an old NEWSIE performer and we got taught on of the dances. Now it was finally time to head to JKF we loaded on the buses we were on our way we saw the town of Harlem, Yankee’s stadium Mets stadium upper Manhattan. We finally got to JFK me, my mom, Stephanie and her mom Autumn and her dad Abbi, Emma and a couple of other people almost missed our flight home we had to run clear across the airport so we wouldn’t miss our flight ! But we all made it ! It was a long 7 hours on a plane and then at 10:00 pm we touched down in Seattle and then long 3 hours home. It was all worth it I would do it again! Evil of the World By Riley Corbin The Earth is full of good things that will bring happiness and evil things that will bring sadness. In the book “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck, one thing seems to be the luckiest things for the Native American family but ends up causing sadness, madness, and death. Good things do not always bring forth pleasing and fortunate events. At first sight, valuable objects will make you think of all the good things to come from it and all the possibilities to do with it. In “The Pearl”, the book says on page 25 that “…Kino saw a ghostly gleam.” Some may think this to mean that the word “ghostly” means white or see through, transparent, which would change it to “…Kino saw a white gleam.” Others may take the meaning of the word “ghostly” as a sign of misfortune or death, being that ghosts are those of dead people. Initially, that is what the ghostly gleam that Kino saw would cause. From finding this pearl Kino and Juana, Kino’s wife, could get the doctor to heal their baby. The doctor comes after hearing that Kino has found a magnificent pearl. After the doctor gets to Kino’s little hut house, he examines the baby. “Then from his bag he took a little bottle of white powder…” page 45. This powder is good because it would cure the baby of its sickness from the scorpion sting. Kino and Juana can now feel better knowing that their baby is healed. Later after Kino has gone crazy from the pearl and all the people that are after him, he, his wife, and baby all leave town to get away because people will be tracking him. On their way they come across three trackers in the mountains. These trackers are now on the trail of Kino. Even though Kino and his family get to a cave, what happens is tragic. When the trackers catch up Kino goes down to kill the humans. Before he leaves though, Juana says things that will protect Kino but Kino isn’t the only one needing protection. Those humans are the enemies, they need to go. The Trackers may ruin his hopes and dreams of his family. The enemies will make nothing good happen, nothing at all. Those “black unhuman things” will be the bringing of sadness and sorrow. The baby is killed by one of the trackers. The most pleasing things in life will bring happiness, but Not always will pearls and money bring events that you’ll enjoy. Some instances will be more damaging mentally than they will be physically. The good things in life may turn out to be the things that will cause the evil in us to come out and make people do bad things they’d later regret. Retirement Speech by Hayley Kroll “Today one of our best ad. Executives retires,” says my future boss, “and now I present Mrs. White to tell us about her experiences in this company.” “Thank you for the introduction,” I say, taking my place behind the podium, “My journey to retirement has been long and fraught with obstacles, but one of my favorite parts of being in advertising is seeing all the new technology that’s been developed.” I bring up my notes on my tablet, that took me I don’t know how many hours to write, and say, “I’ve chosen a few of my favorite projects that had me thinking ‘What will they think of next?’ For instance, thinking back to when I was just starting to make my way in this company, brainstorming ideas for how to market the first smartphone with a holographic keyboard. Little did I know that this was just the beginning. The next invention brought me back to my years in the Selah Jr. High School Journalism Club, who knew my memory could go back that far? I remember one of my classmates writing an article about that exact device, we all remember when Smell-Phones came out, right? I think the client’s first impression of me was that I was crazy or maybe just rude, because I couldn’t help but laugh to myself when I remembered that article. However, these innovations in cellphone technology didn’t quite strike my interest as décor projector did. Last but not least, it just amazed me to see something replace the need to paint the walls of your home. By just using a program on your computer, you could design the look of a room and even decorate for holidays. Then a projector mounted in the center of the ceiling would just make it appear, it was like magic. These are all inventions that have made my time here all the more memorable.” Greed, the Guide – from The Pearl by Maggie Ballew “I will have, I will have, I will have.” These were the words that Kino said when he found the “Pearl of the World”(p.27). Human nature is a curious thing. It can cause people to make or break. In The Pearl, Kino is broken by his own greed. Greed corrupts anyone and everyone. And Kino was corrupted by the ”Pearl of the World” throughout the novel, The Pearl, Kino increasingly wanted more and more. That lust for more, caused him to lose Coyotito, his son. Kino had found the “Pearl of the World” and thought that he would be rich. With the money he imagined that he would gain by selling the pearl, he imagined buying many things: a fancy wedding for the mother of his child, an education for his son, and even a rifle for himself. Kino said, “ … A rifle….Perhaps a rifle.”(p.32) And so Kino went into town to sell his pearl. ”The man behind the desk said,’... I still offer one thousand.’”(p.67) Kino believed that his pearl was worth much more than one thousand pesos, so he refused the offer. Kino decided to sell the pearl elsewhere. ” To the north… I have heard that there are cities in the north.” (p.86) But Kino and his family were followed by trackers. And these trackers would kill his son. While Juana and Coyotito hid, Kino went back to attack the trackers with a knife. Unfortunately, Coyotito cried out and one of the trackers heard the child. The tracker mistakenly believed that that Coyotito was a coyote pup, fired his rifle, and killed the child. Kino killed the man and took the man’s rifle, the rifle that had killed his child. Now he had the rifle that he wanted. He killed the last tracker with this rifle. Alas, he was too late. He had a rifle, but his son was dead. His only son was dead. Kino had wanted a rifle. And he wouldn’t accept any money less than the 50 thousand pesos that he believed his “Pearl of the World” was worth. He acquired his rifle. But it was this ironic acquisition that broke Kino’s heart. It was this rifle that caused the death of his son. Juana and Kino walked into town defeated and destroyed. Much as Kino was destroyed for his “Pearl of the World”, Rome was destroyed for their ” … piles of antiquity”( p.246 Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire) that included artwork and precious metals. Rome’s greed had led to an accumulation of a great deal of “portable wealth” (p.245 Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire), a “portable wealth” that others wanted. Kino’s “portable wealth” was his pearl. The pearl buyers sent the trackers to take the pearl back from Kino by any means, and if it was at all possible, to kill him and his family so that there wouldn’t be any witnesses. Similarly, the destroyers of Rome, Alaric and Genesaric among others, sent soldiers to Rome to search out and take this “portable wealth”. According to Gibbon’s this was one of the final straws in the decline of the Roman Empire. Greed is a part of human nature. Greed is a terrible, corruptive part of human nature. Greed can make you; greed can break you. Greed can cause you to strive towards and accomplish goals, including the most irrational goals. Greed can also cause harm to those that matter most to you. Before you let greed be your guide, first weigh the potential gains and losses. Think hard over unintended consequences. Want a rifle? You may get a rifle, but you may not get it the way you think. Want portable wealth? Others may want your portable wealth as well, and that may lead to your decline and destruction. Neither Kino nor Rome fully weighed the benefits and costs, and so when they let greed guide them, they lost everything. WASHINGTON DC By Carissa Clark In 2011 I was in the 7th grade . I signed up to be in a group called DC BOUND . There was about 80 kids with several adults attending . I had to raise $2,995 with all of the fundraisers I made my goal .We left June 8 2013. I saw amazing places like the Pentagon, White House, Washington Monument, Martin Luther King Jr. memorial, Capital, Smithsonian, Lincoln Memorial, Library Of Congress, Mt. Vernon, Ford’s Theater and much much more. The most memorable place I went to is the Tomb Of the Unknown Solider were 4 kids got to lay the wreath. I liked going there because I got to see the laying of the wreath Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy’s grave with the internal flame got to see KJKF’S gravesite his son his brother and sister and his unborn daughter that her grave just said “ daughter” and I got to see all of the men and woman who served our country Leonardo’s Mountain Adventure Maggie Rees As Leonardo the Squirrel sat in the hole of his tree home lazily stuffing nuts into the black hole of his mouth, his mother called, “Leonardo! Get in here and help your sister cut tree leaves for our dinner! Quit laying around and do something for a change!” Leonardo sighed, but got up to help his sister. After all, he could just “help” for a little while then go back to what he was doing and not get caught by his scatterbrained mother. At dinner, Leonardo was picking at his tree leaf salad when his dad sighed and without hesitation said, “Leonardo, your mother and sister worked hard to make this dinner. Eat it.” Leonardo scowled and threw his salad on the floor. “I don’t want to eat it. I don’t want to go to school, or help prepare dinner or do anything! I’m tired of living here!” he burst out. “I don’t want you to live here either. Oh, and When you leave, can I have your room?” His little sister Clove chimed in. Leonardo ran to his room and packed a leaf full of nuts and ran off into the woods. The furry creature dashed through the woods whizzing past trees and evading rocks destined to get out of the forest. After a few hours, Leonardo found a spot to rest his eyes and quickly fell asleep. The next morning, Leonardo awoke to a cracking sound. He had just fluttered his eyes open when he saw a creature digging into his leaf sack. “No! Not my nuts!” He screeched. Leonardo dove onto the creature and wrestled it until the nuts fell out of its hand. Leonardo jumped back up and examined this mysterious figure. “You’re a platypus?” He asked quizzically. “Yes, and you’re a squirrel and that’s a tree over there,” She shot back. “Why are you snatching my nuts?” “I was hungry, obviously.” She snitched. “Well, what are you doing here?” “ I live here. Nothing to do anyway. Just steal food.” “Oh, well do you want to come with me? I’m going on a journey.” Leonardo asked. “Sure. Got nothing to do anyway.” The platypus answered. “Oh, I’m Patricia by the way.” She added. “Leonardo.” Leonardo answered. The two headed off, traveling on foot ‘till they couldn’t walk. They came to a new clearing in a forest where they could rest. Eating the precious nuts, Patricia noted that the mountain just ahead of them was Mt. Rainier. Leonardo got curious and wanted to know more. Patricia led Leonardo to a paved site where there were plaques set up so you could know about the mountain. There were so many things to know, but the main reason why others would come would be to see the beautiful place. Leonardo was astounded. There were so many things to read on the plaque that he was interested in, but never was before. “Where are the humans?” Leonardo asked. “They won’t be here at night, too cold.” Patricia answered. “I know where we’re going.” “We’re going to see all the mountains. So we can learn about them.” Leonardo blurted out. “Well, got nothing better to do.” Said Patricia. The two headed off into the clearing and made their way through the Cascades. Leonardo was determined to know more about the world he lived in so he could tell his family. Heading onto a road, Leonardo spotted rows and rows of trees lying dead on the ground and the ground scorched with no grass to be seen. Being in this Cascade Range, it was cold, but the valley was rocky and dead. Leonardo noted that there was an eruption that took place. What a beautiful mountain it once was, but is now drained of its beauty surroundings. “There’s a lot more people who come here now.” Patricia said lightly. “They want to see it because it affected us so much.” Traveling from that disastrous site, Leonardo and Patricia headed toward the snow-capped Mt. Baker where there was enough snow to ski. Leonardo and Patricia saw little dots on the mountain. “Those are humans,” Patricia said after a long pause. “They come here to ski.” “Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go!” Leonardo chipped in. After traveling across the cascades in a two month period of time visiting the famous mountains on their quest while skiing on Mt. Baker, Learning history of the Mt. St. Helens eruption, exploring the natural beauty of Mt. Rainier, climbing the notoriously known Mt. Adams, and visiting the well- known photographed Mt. Shushkan while Snapchatting pics with chipmunks, and also hiking up Mt. Washington, Patricia and Leonardo learned a boatload of knowledge. Leonardo felt proud to know that he could go home and tell his father about a million things he didn’t know before and couldn’t wait to get back home. But Patricia wasn’t wanting to go back home. “Well, we’d better get home before my brain explodes! I can’t handle any more information!” Leonardo exclaimed excitedly. But Patricia had other thoughts. “Well, I don’t want to go home.” She answered quietly as they headed into the forest where their habitats were awaiting them. Leonardo stopped quickly. “Don’t you want to see your family and friends?” “Well I would if I had any, but I don’t.” “But I’m your friend,” Leonardo answered. “Yeah, but we don’t live very close. I’m all alone in the forest.” She shot back. Leonardo stopped again and looked at Patricia. “Patricia, you don’t have to be alone. In fact, you can come back to live with my family in our tree. It’s exactly what you want.” Leonardo suggested. “I.. I don’t know. I don’t want to intrude.” She answered hesitantly. “You won’t. It’ll be fun! We’ll get to tell them all about it! In?” “Well, do you have any nuts there?” “What do you think?” Leonardo answered. “Yes! I’ll go.” Coming back to the tree that he left three months ago was strange to him. But Leonardo felt rejuvenated. Over dinner, Patricia and Leonardo were able to tell all about their journey. Leonardo spilled out so much new found knowledge his mother fainted. His father smiled, and his sister just stared at him with an open mouth. “But best of all, I found a friend.” Leonardo added. Wilt Chamberlain By Marco Rivera Standing at 7’1 and listed weight at 275 pounds. Wilt Chamberlain was one of the best basketball players to hit the court. Born in 1936, Philadelphia,PA to a family of nine children, he was not interested in basketball at first because he thought it was a game for sissies. Instead he liked track and field and was great at it. By the time he went to Philadelphia overbrook high school, Wilt was 6’11, and had a natural advantage over his peers. He would average 31 points in the 1953 high school season. He led his team to a 7162 win against the Northeast Highschool of his future NBA teammate Guy Rodgers. Wilt was on his way to the Philadelphia Championship against their rivals The West Catholic. Wilt was able to score 29 points, but they lost 42-54. The West Catholic was triple- teaming Chamberlain the whole game. In Wilts second season, he was able to take his team to a perfect 19-0 season and won against The South Catholic 74-50. Wilts third and final season in overbrook high school, they then again went to the Championship with the West Catholic. Scoring 35 points, Chamberlain won an easy 83-42 victory. Graduating High School, over 200 Universities wanted to recruit Wilt. Many colleges offered Chamberlain many things like acting, diamonds, and his high school coach even offered him a job as a coach. After all the college offers, Wilt decided he wanted to play at the University of Kansas, and in 1955, Chamberlain joined The University of Kansas. While living in Kansas, Wilt really enjoyed it, but he seen places that prohibited black people to enter. Wilt simply ignored these signs and went wherever. Nobody bothered him, and as a result, black people in Lawrence were treated better. At KU, Chamberlain became a Jayhawk freshman under the coach Phog Allen, whom Wilt had admire. Chamberlains first debuts game for the freshman squad was against the varsity Jayhawks. Wilt dominated his older college mates by scoring 42 points, grabbing 29 rebounds and 4 blocks. Big Wilt enjoyed playing under his coach Allen. That would soon come to an end. Phog Allen would have to retire, and taking his place would be Dick Harper who Chamberlain had a bad relationship with. In 1957, 23 teams played for the NCAA men's division I basketball Championship. It was held in Dallas, Texas. During this time segregation was taking place. The Jayhawks were going against the all-white southern Methodist University. KU won in overtime after a brutal battle, the score was 7365. Next they were up against Oklahoma city. KU won once again under racial abuse, the score was 81-61. Chamberlain made the first all American team and lead his Jayhawks to the NCAA finals against the North Carolina Tar Heels. The whole game was intense, but at the end, North Carolina had won. Wilt described it as his most painful loss ever. After his junior year, Wilt wanted to become professional. At the time, the NBA did not accept players until they finished there last year of studies. Chamberlain decided to play for the Harlem Gobleters for a sum of 50,000 dollars. (about 405,000 dollars today) On October 24, 1959, Wilt joined the Philadelphia/ San Francisco Warriors. The Warriors pick was highly unusual, they so called it a territorial pick, despite that Chamberlain spent his college years in Kansas. However, the warriors owner Eddie Gottlieb, one of the founding fathers of the NBA argued that Wilt grew up in Philadelphia, and that there were no NBA teams in Kansas, the Warriors had territorial rights to Wilt. Wilt played with the Warriors from 1959 to 1965. In his first NBA season, Wilt averaged 37.6 points and 27 rebounds. The Warriors entering the 1960 playoffs Syracuse Nationals, going against the Eastern Divisional Champions, The Boston Celtics. Chamberlain going against his rival Bill Russell, growing up to be one of the best on court rivalries ever. however they would also be friends off the court. At the end of the game, the Warriors lost the series 4-2. Chamberlains second season stats surpassed his rookie stats by averaging 38.4 points and 27.2 rebounds per game. He became the first player to break the 3,000-point barrier and the first and still the only player to break the 2,000 rebound barrier. Chamberlain once again could not convert his team to success. It was noted that Wilt did not have much respect for his coach Neil Johnston. In Wilts third season with the Warriors was known coached by Frank Mcguire. The coach responsible for Wilts painful loss in the NCAA against the Tarheels. On March 2, 1962 in Hershey, PA, Wilt scored 100 points against the New York Knicks. Wilt Chamberlain broke and still holds the record for the most points ever scored in one game. Once again in the playoffs, and once again with the Celtics. They had a brutal fight till the end. Both teams winning 3 games, leaving it to the 7th and final game. Chamberlain tying the last game with 16 seconds left. Everyone thought over time but Celtics shooting guard Sam Jones made a shot with 2 seconds left and won the game. Owner of the Warriors sold his team to businessmen from San Francisco for $850,000 (equal to about 6.5 million dollars today) Wilt had not won a Championship with the Warriors the whole time he was in there. In 1965 Wilt was traded. After his trade, Chamberlain found himself with a promising team that included future hall of famer guard Hal Greer, and many talented players such as Larry Costello, Chet Walker, and Luscious Jackson. At first the team was complicated, where some wanted to be leaders and the players did not communicate. Wilt did not even care for coach Schayes because he had made some disrespectful remarks. As the season progressed the players started communicating and working better. With Wilts 34.7 points per game and 22.9 rebounds, the 76ers made it to the playoffs. Once again Wilt goes against his rival Bill Russell and his Celtics. The press were calling it a brutal and spectacular game. Both teams going 3-3, the fight to move on depended on the 7th and final game at Boston. On the 7th game, Wilt scoring 30 points and 32 rebounds made the score 110-109 with five seconds left. Russell botched the inbound pass, hitting a guide wire over the backboard giving the ball back the 76ers, immediately coach Schayes called a time out. The plan was to give the ball to Hal Greer rather them Chamberlain because they thought that they would intentionally foul him, and Wilt was terrible at the line. So when Hal Greer got the ball, he intended the inbound shot and it got stolen by John Havlicek, preserving the Celtics lead. For the fifth time in several years, Russell’s team stopped Wilt from winning a title. The next season, the 76ers played strong with a record of 55-25 in the regular season. In the playoffs, they meet their familiar foes, the Boston Celtics, this time they had home court advantage. However, Boston won their first two games on the road, Wilt playing normally. In game three, on the road, Wilt scoring 31 points winning and keeping the series alive. In game four, Boston had won, going on to game five. Prior to game five, Wilt was nowhere to be found, showing disrespect to his teammates, the coach still had Wilts back, but none of the player where unforgiving. In game five itself, Chamberlain played great, scoring 46 points and 34 rebounds. Unfortunately the Celtics won the game 120-112. Chamberlain was pointed out that he was unprofessional, egoistic behavior, and a bad example for his teammates. In the next season, with a new coach and a new Wilt. Chamberlain started playing more defensive and that got the 76ers a even better record than before, with 68 wins and 13 losses. Finally, Wilt made it to the finals and he was playing against his old team the Warriors. winning three games and losing two, this brought them to game six. In that game, the sixers were up by one point. When the Warriors got the ball, they played really good defense was nearly impossible for the other team to do anything and won the game. Finally Wilt won his first Championship. Wilt stayed with the sixers install 1968 not have winning another Championship. In 1968, Wilt was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. Wilt played with them for five years. In the 1972 season with the Lakers, after many losses, Wilt was going to the finals against The Chicago Bulls. Chamberlain playing amazing was the cause that they had swept the Bulls and won his second Championship. In the 1972-1973 was to be Chamberlains last. Wilt was only averaging 13.2 points. The Lakers made it to the finals with the New York Knicks. The Lakers had lost to the Knicks 1-4, after that, Wilt no longer played. Smoking can and will lead to addiction, respiratory defects, and other risk behaviors. Death by smoking is caused by lung cancer, heart disease, stroke, and so many other health problems. In 2003, 15.2 billion dollars were put into advertising for smoking. Some people think that smoking makes them look cool and fit in with the group; yet, there are more positive ways to address these issues. It is better to refuse from the start and remember that you want your body to be healthy. To remind yourself to never smoke or do anything harmful to your body you can list reasons why you would not ever take the substance, stay away from situations that could lead to addiction, and understand the dug and what it can do to you. Drugs, when used correctly, can be very helpful. Drugs or medicine can help you to fight illness and feel healthy again. Illegal drugs can make you feel good for a limited amount of time, but they are very harmful in the long term. Drugs work by causing chemical changes to happen in your body. Drugs in the brain can cause you senses to alternate immensely. A drug can be helpful or harmful and you can control a drug by using it at the right time and how often you use it. The golden Retriever is. There are so many great, and wonderful things about this breed of dogs that I intend to share with you, and I guarantee by the end of this, you will be wishing you had one of these marvelous dogs for yourself. Even if you’re a cat lover, I bet you wouldn’t mind having a loving, fuzzy and loyal golden retriever to come home to every day. Some things you should know are; The golden retriever breed can memorize up to over 200 words of the human language. They can also learn commands in under two weeks, and learn their name fairly quickly. Their lifespan is 12-14 years, maybe more. Golden retrievers also make great therapy, and guide dogs. Not only are these dogs smart but they are loyal, well-behaved, sweet dogs. If I were to get another dog, a golden would be my choice. When golden retrievers are born the color of their fur is most often going to be a light blonde color, it will darken up as they get older. But depending on the dog their fur could range from a pale cream color, to a dark reddish brown color. These dogs need a lot of exercise, they are very active and love to run. They can get super hyper, or possibly sick, if they are not exercised on a daily basis. Ways you can exercise your these dogs are by; taking them to a dog park, throwing the ball, taking them on runs, or letting them swim. These type of dogs especially love the water, which makes bath time a little easier. Although they don’t need as many baths as regular dogs, they just need to be brushed often to keep their long fur from getting matted and clumpy. Goldens also make great hunting dogs! Their mouths are soft, so it makes it easier for them to retrieve things. Golden retrievers also need tons of attention, if they don’t they could become lonely and actually sad. Sometimes they need a friend. All dogs have their own personalities but when it gets down to the grit they’re more similar than different. Most of the time guldens’ get along with other dogs without a problem, they’re very friendly. I have two purebred golden retrievers of my own, and I love them, with all my heart! The first one my family got was raised on a farm outside, and till this day Thor ( what we named him, being the biggest puppy of the bunch ) loves to be outside and to run in our fields. Thor is so loyal and loving, we became attached right away. Moses, on the other hand, was a rescue dog. He was in a kennel for 5 months of his life. When we got him he didn’t know anything. He didn’t know how to go up steps, he wasn’t potty trained, and he was the most shy thing you have ever seen. Mo learned the ropes pretty quickly, learning from Thor of course. Momo learned his name in about a week along with other importance a dog needs to know. We knew he was going to be a great dog to bring into the family. Both our dogs also love to carry things around in their mouths, for example, socks, shoes, Legos, slippers, even leaves. It’s just a natural instinct for them. If you are looking to buy a golden retriever try your local pet store, or look for signs around town where breeders have puppies for sale. A well-bred golden retriever can cost from 500 to 1,800 dollars, depending on the breeder but keep your ears open. We got both our goldens for free. 1,800 dollars is a lot of money, not very cheap, but the dog is worth every penny.
