Why buy products packaged in glass?
There are two major -- and logical -- reasons for you
and your family to think glass when you do your own
shopping.
First: As a member of the community, you show pride
and support of your glass-making neighbors, and a healthy
regard for your economic community.
The second important reason for choosing glass is glass
itself. Glass is quality packaging, whether you're buying
pickles or pop. Food and drinks taste better in glass. And,
after being opened, glass containers are easily resealed to
preserve freshness. What's more, you can see what you
are buying...a point that the majority of consumers
appreciate.
Glass manufacturing was born in Brockway. We have
been producing glass containers since 1907. As a
Company and a community we all share in the success and
responsibility of supporting local industries, like ourselves.
We thank and praise those who have played an integral
role in our past, present, and future.

Native Americans
Every year our booklet focuses on something special and meaningful to our local
area. We have read about local and national events, anniversaries and exposés.
Exposés have covered important people who contributed to the development of
Brockway as a community including, the Brockways, Clarks and Nichols, and also
our local industries of timber, farming, coal, glass, clay and powder metal.
Now we touch on another important aspect of our development, a somewhat
forgotten group, the native people that traveled this area as far back as 15,000 years
ago. These people were not establishing any permanent settlements as the Brockway’s did, but staying in hunting camps. They stayed in areas such as Big Vineyard,
which is north of town where the rock shelters provided protection from the elements.
They stayed long enough to trap and hunt the abundant bear, fox, beaver, white
tailed deer, elk, turkey, mountain lion and wolf, as well as other forest animals.
They traveled, depending on the season, for nuts, berries and roots, and they fished
in the pristine streams under the great stands of hemlock, oak, American chestnut
and maple. These stands of forest were so dense in places that the sun and stars
were blocked out due to the thick canopy of branches and leaves above them.
These native people were self-sufficient and found the land plentiful. Traveling from
the north down the Little Tobec (Little Toby) to the point where it turns north (Main
Street Bridge in Brockway) to meet the Big Tobec (Big Toby later to be called the
Clarion), these native people known as the Seneca, were part of the Iroquois Nation.
They made this land (now our town) their home.
Reminders or calling cards from their presence can be found by the keen eye in the
form of arrow heads, stone axes and other tools along the creeks or freshly tilled
ground. Mancala sometimes called bi-pitted stones or nutting stones made on rough
sandstone can be found. These game boards have eight dimples carved onto the
flat surface in a square of six with the remaining two on each end. This game was
played with a pebble, seed or grain. Also many of the names which are important
and familiar to us come from this group of people, although anglicized: Toby,
Punxsutawney, Allegheny, Appalachian, Kittanning, Susquehannock, Moshannon,
Seneca and Iroquois to name a few. Even some of the animals we encounter still
bear the names they gave them such as the wapiti or elk, opossum, raccoon and
skunk.
Take a moment this summer and explore your surroundings. Visit the Taylor
Memorial Museum for their displays. On July 4th, stop by under the trees near the
Museum (weather permitting) and speak with George Miller, a local historian, who
has explored the area and found their “calling cards”, learn to knap a piece of flint to
make an arrow head and to learn some of their customs.
During our celebration, make sure you visit the Carnegie Museum of Natural History
on American Indian Adventures at 1:15 PM & 4:15 PM, and Adventures in Archaeology at 2:45 PM at the 9th Avenue Pavilion in the park. You will be amazed at what
adventures lie ahead.
Our Native Americans are rich in customs and traditions and should be remembered
as we remember our history and customs from our immediate families and those that
made Brockway what it is today.

career goal is to manage trade with other countries. Stephanie is the
daughter of Christopher and Laura Spirk of Brockway.
The Brockway community is proud to have her represent our community.

American Legion Stage
Saturday, July 4, 2015
8:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Boogie woogie back to the 30’s and 40’s with The Manhattan Dolls. This New York
City based vocal trio has been captivating audiences all over the world with their
Andrews Sisters Tribute show.
Experience a musical journey filled with the toe-tappin’ hits made famous by those
legendary “singsational” sisters who performed for more USO shows than any other
vocal group during WWII. With their spot-on three-part harmonies, synchronized dance
moves, quick wit and patriotic hearts, The Manhattan Dolls truly capture the essence of
the original Andrews Sisters.
The Manhattan Dolls will be sure to fill your memories with their voices, charm you
with their personalities and touch your heart forever with their patriotism.
Brockway All Star Big Band
Taylor Memorial Park
American Legion Memorial Stage
Friday, July 3, 2015
7:30 p.m.
Under the direction of Dr. Bill Stowman & Dr. Brad Genevro, the
Brockway All Star Big Band was established to honor Brockway’s rich musical
association with jazz and to revive the tradition of enjoying music from the big band
era as part of the Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration. Brockway natives Bill
Stowman and Brad Genevro, in order to honor their teachers, George Monaco and Don
Routch, started the All Star Big Band.
If you long for the sounds of yesteryear and want to embrace a longstanding Brockway
tradition, then come out and enjoy the Brockway All Star Big Band as they lead us
on a journey through the spectacular big band era and celebrate this truly American
art form.

FIREWORKS PUBLIC DISPLAY SAFETY TIPS
The fire department is usually responsible for the public's safety when a large
scale Fireworks display is presented. The actual firing of the display is conducted by
a trained pyrotechnic operator and crew. These professionals know and comply with
all state and local regulations.
Spectators should obey all ushers or monitors and respect the safety barriers set
up to allow the trained operator room to safely do his job. Resist any temptation to
get close to the actual firing site.
Although it rarely happens, it is possible that a firework component might fall to
the ground without exploding. The public should be cautioned not to touch these
fireworks. If they happen to find any which have not exploded, they should
immediately contact the local fire or police departments.
Pets have very sensitive ears and the booms and bangs associated with a
fireworks display can be quite uncomfortable, particularly to dogs. In fact, the noise
can actually hurt their ears. Leave pets at home if you are going to the fireworks
show.
Leave the lighting of all fireworks to the trained operator when you attend a public
display. Sparklers, fountains and other items that many states allow for use by
individuals are not appropriate to use when a large crowd is present. Leave your
own fireworks at home - the display will provide plenty of excitement.
FOR YOUR SAFETY, THE FOURTH OF JULY COMMITTEE AND BROCKWAY
BOROUGH REQUEST THAT NO ONE SIT ON THE DIKE, TRESTLE OR IN THE
IMMEDIATE VICINITY OF THE FIREWORKS LAUNCH. ANYONE IN THE
RESTRICTED AREAS WILL BE ESCORTED OFF THE PREMISES.

City based vocal trio has been captivating audiences all over the world with their

If you long for the sounds of yesteryear and want to embrace a longstanding Brockway
tradition, then come out and enjoy the Brockway All Star Big Band as they lead us
on a journey through the spectacular big band era and celebrate this truly American
art form.
