Back in 1995, the story began with the idea of creating a full service company for yachts. It was
obvious at that time that ship owners’ needs and dreams weren’t being fully satisfied because of the lack
of such large-scale yacht facilities.
17 years later, MONACO MARINE can claim to be one of the key players in the refit industry not only thanks
to the hauling capabilities of its sites but also thanks to its highly skilled teams and its network of experienced subcontractors that it has built up over the years
Despite these achievements, the company has continued to push ahead in pursuit of its unrelenting ambition to fully satisfy its ever growing clientele by offering services at all strategic locations on the French
Riviera. MONACO MARINE succeeded in establishing itself in Antibes in the early months of the year 2012:
The acquisition of this well-known former ship building facility increases MONACO MARINE’s human resource and technical strength.
More than ever, pleasure is a serious matter.

Bertrand mercier
Environment, security, let's meet Bertrand
Age: 33 years old
Nationality: French
MONACO MARINE employee since: 2004
Position: Responsible Health, Security & Environment (HSE)
Location: 6 shipyards
Bertrand, can you explain your
role at MONACO MARINE?
“we have many other
projects that will soon
be launched to reinforce
the position of MONACO
MARINE as unique
in term of HSE standards”
I work in the Technical Division
supervised by Marc Avazeri and I
am in charge of the management of professional
and environmental risks. Our goal is to implement
safety rules to protect our employees’ health, tools
and procedures to protect goods that are put under
our responsibility and environmental rules to reduce
the impact of our activity on the environment.
Can you give us more details about the label
“Port Propre”?
From a legal point of view, all yacht facilities in France
must comply with the “Port Propre” regulations. They
allow beaches to benefit from the “blue flag” eco-label that guarantees a water of high quality. In other
words it consists in limiting the environmental impact
of the activity in the harbour, especially in shipyards,
thanks to a continuous improvement of the waste
reprocessing systems. Green efficiency and appropriate procedures and the control of noise pollution
are our priorities: whatever the type of job, green products, when available, are our first choice. We also
recommend the use of recyclable materials and in
Cogolin we built a noise protection wall this year.
Recently MONACO MARINE has enlarged its
network with the acquisition of Antibes shipyard. What does your key mission consist of
in terms of compliance with MONACO MARINE’S
group standards?
The label “Port Propre” was already implemented in
Antibes where there is a strong collaboration between
the local authority and the shipyard. Practically my role was to
upgrade the equipment in order to
respect the maintenance policy of
the group: check the fire prevention
installations which are a main concern, organise the
planning and cleaning of the site to improve service
quality and work conditions (particularly the disposal of dangerous wastes) and also the training of our
teams and distribution of the new technical clothing
for the protection of our staff, which will include knee
protection or the use of more comfortable fabrics.
These standards are all characteristic of MONACO
MARINE practice. My mission throughout the network
will never end in order to maintain the best standards.
What about the MONACO MARINE projects regarding the HSE (Health and Safety in Employment)
regulations?
We are proud to announce that we are evolving in
many fields. Already we were the first to implement
a process for managing pyrotechnic waste (smoke,
flare, etc...). Our goal is to carry on increasing fire prevention: for instance painting, metal work or indeed
carpentry increase fire risks in our shipyards. We
have simultaneously developed a new policy as far
as wedging is concerned, that will apply to all our
sites at the end of 2012. The use of wooden stools
will be prohibited. Steel stools, which are more resistant and easy to carry by truck, will replace them and
steel half-cradles that offer more stability will substitute iron props. It certainly is a step by step approach
and we have many other projects that will soon be
launched to reinforce the position of MONACO MARINE
as unique in term of HSE standards.

Eric Robert Peillard
Our new talent
Age: 50 years old
Nationality: French
MONACO MARINE employee since: 2012
Position: Director
Location: La Ciotat
Training and loyalty are main priorities
For the last 17 years, MONACO MARINE has been creating a strong identity and developing key corporate axes in its human resources policy. Internal promotion, professional development, social values and
cultural mix are widely encouraged within the group.
Highly skilled teams are MONACO MARINE’s main asset: Technical knowledge is regularly updated and developed
through training sessions that are held by professionals or by subcontractors who regularly work with MONACO
MARINE’s teams. Every year about 80% of MONACO MARINE’s staff attends at least one training session, which
represents a total of 1620 hours.
A special effort is made to allow our staff to move from one position to another or from one site to another with
the aim of keeping them informed and motivated. This aspect is one of the main strengths of MONACO MARINE
because the company can offer a complete career plan. Regular meetings are organized to allow people from
our different sites and with similar jobs to exchange information and best working practices.
Our head office remains available to bring support and assistance with the ultimate goal of sharing the same
spirit and set of values throughout our various shipyards.
Speaking of human resources, now is the perfect moment to announce the arrival of the new director of our
shipyard in La Ciotat, Eric Robert Peillard.
Eric, can you tell us your story?
“My main objective is
to focus on satisfying
client expectations in the
mega yacht sector”
Cruising has always been my passion. I started my career as a captain in the Merchant Navy on vessels from 15 to 250
meters mainly in the Caribbean Sea. Then for family
reasons I came back to Europe. I worked for IMS first
as a project manager and then I was promoted to chief
operating officer. In 2002, when the mega yacht facility in La Ciotat was set up, I joined MONACO MARINE
and worked with Vincent Larroque on the development
of the shipyard for 3 years. Then I was back at IMS as
general manager until I left for Guy Couach in 2010.
Now in 2012 the cycle is complete: I’m back at
MONACO MARINE.
What are your main objectives at La Ciotat?
My main objective is to continue to develop the work
undertaken at the yard since it first opened and to
focus on satisfying client expectations in the mega yacht sector. But
we also need to focus on getting
large refits considering the 360m drydock facility we
have which allows us to deal with all sizes of yachts.
Our expertise in this field was already proven 10
years ago with the refit work we did on Ramsès, Sokhar and the previous Sarafsa.
What made you choose to come back to MONACO
MARINE?
I took part in the creation of this shipyard and as
one of its “fathers” its successful development has
always been something that I hold very dear.
We definitely want to be the key player in the sector
that others cannot ignore and I am sure MONACO MARINE will achieve this thanks to its human, technological and financial assets.

What do you appreciate most at MONACO MARINE Monaco?
MY Paloma; Monte-Carlo 30’
The service we get here in Monaco is “all inclusive” and we are very happy with it. All our
needs are taken into consideration which makes us feel at home.
MY Pure Insanity; Cigarette 38’
The location is beautiful and the marina fits perfectly. I like the new design of the pontoon and appreciate the atmosphere thanks to the team spirit among the staff. The
warm welcome we always get and the little parties they organize for the clientele don’t
spoil our pleasure to be there!
MY Coco; Atlantis 40’
It’s hard to pinpoint simply one of MONACO MARINE’s assets – we appreciate the whole
service.. We like the hands-on readiness and availability of the staff and we never need
worry if we come back from a cruise at 9pm, there is always someone around to give us
assistance on our arrival.

claudio franzone
Age: 40 years old
Nationality: Italian
MONACO MARINE employee since: 2005
Position: Project Manager
Location: Beaulieu sur Mer
Claudio, can you explain your
background to us?
“the owner and the captain are really happy
about the work that
has been done. We can
assume that they will
come back next year for
other operations”
I was brought up in San Remo - Northern Italy. It is known to be a main
yachting spot in the Med and I was naturally attracted to this industry.
I first graduated in electro-mechanics and then
I achieved my dream of cruising when I started as a
captain on a 18 meters boat. Then I jumped to a 47
meters. I was also involved in the construction of a
22 meters yacht in Lavagna in Italy and later, a 33
meters.
At the shipyard, during the construction, the aspect
of being constantly in touch with different people
was what I missed as a crew member.
And that was THE decision that led me to MONACO
MARINE which I joined as a project manager in 2005
for the shipyard in Beaulieu sur Mer.
You have selected MY Scratch for the project
of the year. Explain in details what was done on
the boat.
MY Scracth is a 92’Mangusta built by Overmarine in
Italy. The request the captain presented us was a total change in colour: the white hull was to be painted
black and the superstructure, grey. Other shipyards
had been asked for an estimate but we got the project and afterwards we also had to work on the jet
transmission and other mechanical parts with respect to the 5 year maintenance contract. This work
consisted in dropping the jets, the shaft, checking
all the systems (hydraulic & mechanic) and replacing damaged parts. MONACO MARINE is one of the
very few shipyards skilled for such a
precise and technical operation. We
also worked on the diesel tanks’ hydraulic structures and a treatment
that consists of scouring the interior
and hydrocarbon processing.
What were the main difficulties you had to face
in this project?
Concerning the painting, the materials used to build
a boat vary with respect to the colour it is going to
be painted. They are in fact less heat-proof for white
boats. The change in temperature of the superstructure material due to the painting can cause problems such as blisters or delamination. Delamination
consists in the different layers of the hull peeling
away, especially on the horizontal parts of the boat,
such as the fly bridge, for instance. Every boat made
out of composite has a structural defect such as
buckling that is not necessarily visible when the boat
is painted in a white colour. That is why the decision
to change the colour of the boat has to be done
with highly technical supervision to avoid any risk of
aesthetical problems.
was the client satisfied?
Naturally, that was our main concern. But the owner
and the captain have given us excellent feedback on
the hydro jet and the paint jobs and are really happy
about the work that has been done. We can assume
that they will come back next year for other operations, but for now we wish them a pleasant cruise and
a wonderful summer season.

Didier, w hat are you r core
activities in St Laurent du var?
“What makes us special
is our ability to work at
short notice for yearly
jobs: we offer packages
including antifouling,
anodes and the cleaning
of all metal parts”
We are a service station for boats
from 5 to 25 meters. What makes us
special is our ability to work at short notice for yearly
jobs: we offer packages including antifouling, anodes
and the cleaning of all metal parts (shafts, chairs,
propellers or flaps) that can be done in 2-3 days no
matter the size of the boat.
Our shipyard perfectly illustrates the synergies we
are willing to create as often as possible within the
group: this year we worked on numerous tenders
belonging to mega yachts undergoing various operations in our other shipyards.
We are traditionally specialized in Volvo engines and
we are used to working on any kind of transmission
that is stand drive or jet drive.
Our anti-osmosis system that is available at the shipyard also makes us unique.
Redecoration/improvements
works will begin in September.
What are your expectations?
We’ve been thinking for some time
that it is time to give our building a "face-lift". We
are therefore seizing the opportunity of the Port of
St Laurent administration’s project to redevelop the
area with a new building that meets environmental
standards. Our shipchandler should be given some
sort of a boost to completely satisfy our clientele.

antibes
More than a shipyard
mirko lorenzi
Age: 45 years old
Nationality: Italian
MONACO MARINE employee since: 1995
Position: Director
Location: Antibes & Beaulieu sur Mer
Why has MONACO MARINE decided
to establish itself in Antibes?
“We already covered
the key yachting
locations of Monaco,
Saint Tropez
and Marseilles and
Antibes was the missing
link in our network”
Antibes is the centre of the universe!
Seriously, the marina in Port Vauban
is the largest one in Europe. We already covered the
key yachting locations of Monaco, Saint Tropez and
Marseilles and Antibes was the missing link in our
network. And that’s no longer so thanks to our shareholders’endeavours to integrate this great asset into
the mix and complete our network that now stretches
all along the French Riviera.
What is the history behind this yacht facility,
previously known as “Chantier Tréhard”, and
what is MONACO MARINE going to bring to the site?
The shipyard is known as a luxury sail yachts
construction yard and its expertise and reputation
have been built up over many years of experience.
During the last economic crisis it decided to focus
on refits because construction was suffering from
a lack of clientele. So the site had to carry out some
specific training programs and transfer its expertise
to the refit sector and now the skills
of the Antibes yard have been
integrated with MONACO MARINE’s
own expertise. The concepts of
modern-thinking, planning, project
management and service are the essential values of
MONACO MARINE’s ethos that are applied in its 5 other
shipyards and will now be implemented in Antibes.
The final goal is to build up synergies within the group
in order to give full satisfaction to our clients.
What are the plans for MONACO MARINE Antibes?
Although our objective is to specialize in important refits
of luxury sail yachts, we also want to attract motor
yachts. Our main job for now is to bring the shipyard
up to all MONACO MARINE’s standards (safety regulations, technical procedures, human resources, branding and above all service to clients) by modernising
the equipment and improving the facilities. The harbour
authorities are just about to launch a new development
project for the area around the shipyard and MONACO
MARINE wishes to take an active part in that.

françois carpente
Age: 53 years old
Nationality: French
MONACO MARINE employee since: 2007
Position: Director
Location: Cogolin
Can you give us your impression
of 2012, and what is special about
this year?
“We carried out 300 repair
or refit works divided
equally between sailing
& motor yachts this
winter (...)and we do our
utmost to be responsive
and efficient”
We are lucky enough to benefit from
28,000 square meters of surface area including 6’000
square meters of undercover storage. Despite the
uncertain economical environment, we can classify
this year as good. We carried out 300 repair or refit
works divided equally between sailing & motor yachts
this winter, and we have identified that the peak in
activity has shifted to different periods throughout
the year. In practical terms, the first semester was
pretty good and the second already looks promising
with many important works scheduled, including the
important refit of a teak deck by our carpenters, and
several paint jobs. The arrival of a splendid classic sailing yacht is also planned for the end of the year. Of
course our main concerns are satisfying the needs
of captains and boat owners in the exclusive Golfe de
St Tropez area and we do our utmost to be responsive
and efficient; the keys to developing loyalty from our
clientele.
What were this year’s most unusual projects?
It is difficult to mention only one project because all
our clients are special but it is true that we have had
the chance to carry out several unusual projects. For
instance:
- The historical 38 meters MY Deianeira is a Vosper
Thornycraft from 1951 with a steel hull. The history of
this boat has made it famous and moreover it appears
in the movie “Grand Bleu” with Jean Reno. We have
changed the upper teak deck thanks
to major works by our carpenters
and replaced the ceiling of the living
room and other interior spaces. This
refit was done by our in-house carpenters, with back up from local sub-contractors who
are all located in the St Tropez area.
- MY Solea can also be included in the list of unusual
projects; it is a 36 meters oceanographic boat built in
Germany in 1974. We carried out important mechanical repairs and improvements on this yacht such
as re-configuring the air conditioning system and the
filtering components and we replaced the generator:
all the operations were carried out by our in-house
mechanical team.
- SY Lupa of London, a Baltic 80 feet, is a regular client.
We completely changed the teak deck and carried
out some important composite work and we installed
a cooler.
- MY Lady Fish is a 49 feet Grand Banks yacht. Here
we undertook a major refit of the wood work, starting
with the removal of all varnish from wooden parts, the
transom, window frames and the cabin, as well as the
paint of the superstructure.
So the main difficulty for me was to choose one
exceptional project from among the 300 we have
worked on this year, and if I had the choice I would list
all of them because our philosophy is to respond to
the needs of our clientele and to make their dreams
come true.

Yacht facilities of the future, unique in terms of infrastructures dedicated to Mega Yachts
Christopher sardo
Age: 45 years old
Nationality: Italian & American
MONACO MARINE employee since: 2009
Position: Super yacht refit sales manager
Location: La Ciotat
Why should a mega yacht owner
choose MONACO MARINE instead
of its competitors?
“MONACO MARINE will
encourage and promote
every initiative that
increases transparency
and professionalism
in the industry”
Refits, by definition, raise many
unanswerable questions regarding
scope. Allowing competitors to
respond to those uncertainties from a level playing
field is an important aspect of the bidding process.
MONACO MARINE will encourage and promote every
initiative that increases transparency and professionalism in the industry.
Our industry has a complex decision-making process
involving several intermediaries, and interested parties,
so the process has to be clear. The personal relationships
between seasoned key people (from captains to brokers,
architects and project managers) will still exist and
remain in the background for many decisions in ship
repair and refit. However, the growing importance of
management companies and the higher complexity
of yachts and regulations are key factors in justifying
from the outset a clear and well-structured bidding process.
The certification ISO 9001 regarding the quality control
and ISO 14001 for environmental management
systems are other arguments that make the yacht
facilities in La Ciotat unique in terms of bidding
process planning. These combined regulations have
been adopted to meet the level of service required
by our clientele. Today, some of MONACO MARINE’s
customers go through a complete bidding process
starting with a detailed specification of works, a detailed
planning programme, a set of conditions to be met
and allows a visit of the boat under defined rules so
that all bidders will get the same
opportunity to ask questions and
check technical points that would
help with their proposal. Captains
and yacht managers often ask different shipyards for detailed descriptions of a given task, for instance rework on the chain
door. The shipyards visit the yacht and prepare their
quotes, but may answer the same problem with very
different technical solutions, making the comparison
more complex for the captains/yacht managers.
Going through such bidding processes is more time
demanding on the owner’s side and on the shipyard’s
but we believe that for large projects, it can finally save
time and money for everyone as repair jobs will be better
clarified from the beginning, allowing the owner’s side
to have a clear definition of works and technical solutions to be implemented and the shipyard to better
plan its workload and procurements.
What were the main projects of the year?
While most yachts were getting ready for a busy
summer season in European waters. La Ciotat shipyard
had an exciting and busy shipyard season.
We had 4 full paint projects – hull and superstructures –
that were successfully completed in June.
- The 56m ALTITUDE, formerly AMNESIA II, built in
Viareggio by Benetti in 2003: She was hauled out
and transferred inside the massive MONACO MARINE
painting shed where a meticulous strip-down of the
deck and superstructure was carried out. Then she
was completely sanded and any points of corrosion
brought back to bare metal in order to be carefully

treated with a full protective cycle.
An overall coat of 545 primer followed,
completed by the final topcoat. Now
with her new shiny and glossy surface,
she is undergoing the final touches
before leaving the confines of the shed and regaining
the open air to be splashed back, ready for the
yachting season. On the vast apron outside the shed
several other boats were lined up in their dry berths.
Among them three were surrounded by a complete
scaffolding structure and covered with heat-shrink
plastic cocoons that sheltered them completely from
the outside weather. These structures are erected
very carefully and with a special technique that allows
them to withstand the high winds typical of this area.
- BLUE VISION is a 44m Benetti Vision built in Fano
in 2006. She has a GRP hull and superstructure and
was originally finished with gelcoat, blue for the hull
and completely white for the superstructure. Her new
owner wanted a change of look and asked us to modify
the parts of the superstructure surrounding the
numerous windows in order to have a matching color
between superstructure and glass panes. Several
colors were tested on various window posts in different
areas before choosing a dark blue as the final color to
be applied. Once the final topcoat was applied and the
new paint- work was finished, she emerged with her
new appearance from the cocoon after the plastic
covering was removed. The new dark color surrounding
the windows gives her superstructure more depth
and definitely a more aggressive look. All involved
were satisfied by the results and BLUE VISION is now
back in the water and ready to sail away.
- MARAYA was the youngest of the four "girls" undergoing
the beauty treatment by MONACO
MARINE this winter.
She is a 54m steel hulled yacht with
aluminum superstructure built in
Ancona by CRN in 2007. She is
painted in a very original combination of Greystone for
the hull and Matterhorn white for the superstructure
with grey/silver trimmings. The work done gave her
back all the gloss and shine she needed in order to
get back to work with renewed confidence!
- MIM, formerly NETANYA 7, was in chronological order
the last of the four projects: she is a 49m steel/aluminum yacht built in Cherbourg by CMN in 2001. She
needed a paint job and the owners were keen on
giving her a “facelift” to get a new, more modern look.
A combination of Moondust white for the hull
and Matterhorn white for the superstructure was
chosen, adorned with silver trimmings. After the anticorrosion treatment, she received a full coat of 545
primer and the last layers of the final topcoat were
applied.
It is worth mentionning that all four projects were
completed within the time schedule, among them
MIM made herself conspicuous by having a full
repaint-work completed in 8 weeks! After some
finishing touches, she was ready to hatch from the
cocoon with her brand new color scheme, and be back
on the Mediterranean yachting circuit.
- Last but not least, NETANYA 8 finishes this list of
important refits. The pictures above illustrate better
than words the changes to the sundeck that she
underwent.

medical appointments,
translations and the
organization of all leisure
activities”
My mission at MONACO MARINE
La Ciotat is to make captains’ and
crews’ lives easier while staying at our shipyard.
I take care of houses, apartments, car rentals, hotel
bookings with special rates for MONACO MARINE’s
crew, medical appointments, translations and the
organization of all leisure activities. Sometimes we
also have specific requests, for instance tickets for
soccer or rugby games.
What kind of events do you organize for crew ?
Karting and Paintball games are the activities most
asked for by the crew, so we make sure to organize a
competition every year. Of course we also have BBQs
on our terrace all year long when the weather is warm
enough!
In December, it’s time for the Christmas fancy dressparty : We have a live band, special decorations and
presents for all crew members given away by Santa
Claus of course!
Every year in April, we organize the
season’s closing party, a very special event to which we invite all the
people involved in La Ciotat shipyard
activities - captains, crew, staff, subcontractors, brokers...
What are the different leisure activities offered in La Ciotat and the surrounding area ?
In La Ciotat, you can do plenty of sport activities like
climbing, cycling, surfing, kiting, skiing...
Moreover from a “cultural” point of view, we can organize visits to the beautiful Calanques or worldwide
famous vineyards.
Other possibilities are:
Paint ball at Cuges les pins - 15 minutes from La Ciotat.
karting at le Castellet - 20 minutes from La Ciotat.
Visits to Aix en Provence and Marseilles - 40 minutes
from La Ciotat.
Rafting and Canyoning in the Gorges du Verdon - 1 hour
from La Ciotat.
Ski resort - 2h30 from La Ciotat.
