Loyola Annual Report 2012 - Loyola Academy of St Louis
breaking the cycle of poverty by educating young men Loyola Academy of St. Louis ANNUAL REPORT 2012 A Jesuit Middle School for Boys letter from the chairman of the board and the president Dear Loyola Family, On behalf of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students and families of Loyola Academy of St. Louis, it is a pleasure to share with you our year in review. We are very proud of what has been accomplished this past year, both in the lives of the young men we are so blessed to serve as well as the many blessings we have received through the support of donors like you. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you! Here at Loyola Academy, our efforts are geared toward breaking the cycle of poverty through education. “Breaking the Cycle” is a theme you will see emanating throughout the following report as that is our ultimate goal. It is our expectation that ALL of our students, despite any socio-economic hardship, will experience a lifetime of success. A middle school student once expressed his desire for his son to one day attend Loyola Academy. Our response to this young man was, “If that happens, we have failed.” As Loyola targets students experiencing various socio-economic obstacles to success, it is our expectation that upon reaching adulthood, our students will not qualify to send their sons to Loyola – thus breaking the cycle of poverty that has gripped many of our families for generations. We sincerely believe that a quality, innovative education provides the cornerstone for our students to excel and to develop all of their God-given talents and abilities. Our young men are developed not only academically, but also spiritually, emotionally and socially – that they might be “Men for Others” in the true Jesuit tradition. Without the support of individuals like you who so generously offer their time, talent and treasure, we would not be able to realize the success we have been so blessed to experience over the past thirteen years. At Loyola Academy, we are more than a school; more than an educational system. We are a family. The student body does not have peers. They have “Brothers,” and the staff is wholly committed to help ensure each student’s success. THANK YOU for joining the family! We look forward to many more years of breaking the cycle together, one young man at a time! May God continue to richly bless you and your families. Again, we say thank you! August Hager III H. Eric Clark Board ChairmanPresident mission statement : Loyola Academy of St. Louis is a Jesuit middle school for boys who have the potential for college preparatory work, but whose progress may be impeded by economic or social circumstances. The Loyola community conducts a challenging program that supports families in preparing each student to achieve his full human potential. In the Ignatian tradition, the school inspires its students to lives of service and leadership through the use of their God-given talents. letter from the principal Dear Loyola Academy Family, Upon the completion of yet another successful year at Loyola Academy, I would like to personally thank you for your commitment, dedication and support you have so generously demonstrated. We definitely could not continue on in our work of breaking the cycle of poverty through education were it not for friends like you. In keeping with that work, I would like to share just a few accomplishments that took place this year in the lives of some of our students. • • • • • Seven students were chosen to receive scholarships to the American Youth Foundation’s Boys Summer Camp because of their leadership potential. Two of our eighth graders, Jibril and Brendan, two seventh graders, Andrew and Victory, and one sixth grader, Darrian, achieved a GPA of 3.5 or higher all four quarters of the 2011-2012 school year. Additionally, these five students were commended for their effort and conduct in all their classes. This summer, nine students had the honor of presenting their winning speeches at the Missouri Athletic Club in the Voices of Excellence writing contest. Two eighth graders were able to grow in their social awareness and share their insights with the student body through the Give Respect, Get Respect program this past school year. 26 eighth graders exited our doors as Loyola graduates, 100% of whom were accepted into local college preparatory high schools. We are so proud of what all of our students were able to accomplish this past year, and we look forward to future feats of greatness in their lives. Again, please know that your support played an invaluable part in these student accomplishments, and we sincerely thank you! On a personal note - throughout my pregnancy this past school year, the students showed their true capacity to be Loyola Men for Others. On many occasions, students opened doors for me, helped me carry my bags, rearranged furniture for me, and even gave suggestions for baby names! They were hoping that we would have a new “Loyola Man,” but alas it was a girl! The staff, our many volunteers as well as many Loyola parents also pulled together proving just how much of a Loyola family we truly are. For that, once again, I thank you. As we continue on in our efforts, we hope you will continue to partner with us in serving the young men of Loyola Academy. Again, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you. Sincerely, Katherine L. This was occurring even to students who came highly recommended by their parochial and public grade schools. In the fall of 1997, a committee was formed to discuss the problems that many low income students were experiencing and to investigate ways to help them succeed. Through this course of action, the Nativity school model was selected for implementation. After much research, the committee decided to move forward with establishing a middle school for boys. The result was Loyola Academy of St. Louis, which welcomed its first class of students in September, 1999. The school differs from other educational institutions in that it was determined that Loyola would: • serve low-income students. • complement - not compete with other St. Louis schools. • include an extended school day, extended school year and “wrap-around” services not typically associated with a school such as health care, recreation, tutoring and mentoring that would support the student and his family. All of these have been proven to increase academic success among our target population. Now in its 14th year of operation, Loyola serves approximately 60 students per year through middle school operations and approximately 75 through its Graduate Support program. annual appeal contributors Adam Family Fund Donna Altepeter Kathy and John Anderson Marta and Dennis Anglim Aspen Engineering, Sales and Services Barb and Michael Aufdenspring Pat and Mark Azar Kathryn and Robert Bachmann Ellen Barnidge and Jamie Baley Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bannister Ann and Ed Barnidge Allison and Pat Barry Gil Beckemeier Kathy and Tom Becvar Caron and Peter Benoist Dan Berger Rodney Bishop Helen and John Boggiano Mr. and Mrs. Mike Burke Gloria and Michael Burns Jean and Allen Burns Mary Ellen and Denis Burns Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Callahan Laura and Pat Carmody Sally and Mike Cherre Mary and Kenneth Clark Jeanne and Jerry Clerc Sally and Joe Coleman Conner Ash P.C.
