Flock Dispersal Sale - Lonesome Oak Farm Johnny Nielsen and Sarah Turner - River John, Nova Scotia 1895 West Branch Road, River John, Nova Scotia | Phone: 902.351.3454 | Email: hybridvigor@live.ca Flock dispersal of a 320 ewe flock located in River John, Nova Scotia. The flock is divided into three separate lambing groups. Genetics are predominately Blue Faced Leicester and Romanov. The Blue Faced Leicester genetics are derived from the original flock of Blue Faced Leicesters that arrived in Nova Scotia in the 1970’s. The Romanov genetics are derived from the Glenshade genetics of the late Ralph Downey. This flock has not had health challenges from the barber pole worm (Haemonchus contortus). Flock has been annually vaccinated with Tasvax 8 (Clostridium Chauvoei - Haemolyticum - Navyi Type B - Perfrigens Type B, C & D - Septicum-Tetani Bacterin-Toxoid) and dewormed with Ivomec Drench, Safeguard and Valbazen used in rotation. Exports of breeding stock to St. Pierre et Miquelon have occurred every two years from this flock and the flock has passed health requirements each year to allow the export to occur without issue. Great pride has been taken in the care of these animals - they have been pastured in the summer and given supplemental hay and grain as and when needed. During their time in the barn the flock is fed silage (pea/oat/barley/grasses) and hay with supplemental grain and soymeal once lambing has occurred. GROUP 1 - EARLY LAMBERS Early lambing flock (due to start lambing in late September/early October) comprised of approximately 140 ewes: Pure bred Romanov Romanov x Dorper Romanov x Blue Faced Leicester Finnsheep x Dorset Romanov x Dorset (Ralph Downey’s dorset genetics) All have been bred to a Romanov ram first, followed by a Dorper ram, with a Blue Faced Leicester ram used as clean up. The lambing rate of this group averaged over the past 3 years is 2.7 lambs per ewe, with the best season being a 3.2 lambs per ewe average. Triplets and quadruplets are common in this group. The ewes typically have enough milk to raise their lambs with only offering a bottle morning and evening as top-up. PHOTOS OF GROUP 1 GROUP 2 - LATE LAMBERS This flock of late lambers is made up of approximately 110 ewes: Blue Faced Leicester x Romanov 3/4 Blue Faced Leicester 3/4 Suffolk Suffolk crosses These ewes have not yet exposed to ram. The lambing rate of this group averaged over the past 3 years is 2.1 lambs per ewe with the best season being 2.5 lambs per ewe. Some ewes in this group have raised quintuplets with minimal support other than a bottle offered to the lambs in the morning and evening as topup. PHOTOS OF GROUP 2 GROUP 3 - REPLACEMENT EWES This flock is made up of approximately 70 replacement ewes ranging in age from 3 to 10 months old with the majority of them being between 8 and 10 months old.
