Background:
35 years on and Elvis Presley continues to capture the imagination
of fans around the globe. He is one of the world’s most recognisable
faces.
The desire to enjoy, understand and celebrate the life and music of
the best-selling artist of all time shows no sign of waning. This is superb news for investors, as his enduring appeal should ensure continuing strong interest in the star’s collectibles for decades to come.
And we believe the Elvis memorabilia market has considerable
room for growth, as we steadily approach the 50th anniversary of
his passing.
What’s new?

Performance of Elvis autographs
between 2000-11:
The Martin-D28 guitar Presley played in his last Las Vegas performance made $106,200 at a US auction in 2009, 32.5% above its
$80,000 estimate.
Elvis’ personal address book, which included the details of many
big stars, such as Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, sold for $11,000 at
a US auction in July 2011, 227.3% above its $3,360 estimate.

Elvis autographs have risen in value at a rate of 14.26% pa since
2000, according to the PFC40 Autograph Index, from £750 ($1,160)
to £3,250 ($5,020).
The Paul Fraser Collectibles View:
We are greatly encouraged by the continued robust sales of Elvis
memorabilia in recent years, in particular the year-on-year increases
seen for his autograph.
Interest in the star shows no sign of abating. Indeed, as more time
passes, the mystique of Presley is only increasing. This is great news
for those looking to invest now, with a view to selling a few years’

Market Update:
down the line.
As such, we believe that the Presley personal memorabilia, stage-worn
apparel and autograph markets have great room for significant price
appreciation over the coming years, as more buyers enter the market.
We recommend Elvis Presley memorabilia as a BUY.
Demographics behind the market:
Elvis is estimated to have sold more than 1bn records worldwide, which
is a world record. It is thought that 40% of the sales have been outside
the US. Elvis’ 18 number ones on the UK Billboard chart remain a record. All factors are evidence of Elvis’ global appeal.
The 2002 remix of A Little Less Conversation, which reached number
one in nine countries, including the UK, confirms that passion remains
for Elvis among the record-buying public.
Around 700,000 visitors a year pay a visit to Graceland in Memphis,
from all over the world.
In 2005, intellectual property company CKX purchased 85% of Presley’s
image, name and likeness rights for $100m, evidence of the company’s
belief in the power of Elvis to produce profit. This confidence is a strong
indicator that individual investors likewise can benefit from the King.
Elvis Presley Signed Photo
Elvis was the second-highest earning deceased celebrity last year, according to Forbes. Elvis generated $55m in the 12 months to October
2011.
We are greatly encouraged by these numbers, which reveal a large
group of enthusiasts around the globe. Among this number are numerous collectors, whose desire for Presley’s finite amount of memorabilia,
we believe, will propel prices skyward over the coming years.
We expect the retirement of the baby boomer generation (those born
between 1946 and 1964) to help spark a surge in demand for Elvis collectibles. This demographic, which owns 80% of the world’s wealth,
grew up with Elvis, and many remember him fondly.
Market Performance Catalyst:
It may seem a long way off, yet in 15 years we will celebrate the 50th
anniversary of Presley’s passing. Such is the hysteria surrounding Elvis
that we believe the anniversary will give the Elvis memorabilia market
a huge boost.
Yet the 35th anniversary year will also see many events that are expected to increase the public interest in Elvis and his collectibles. Elvis Lives:

Market Update:
“The Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Event”, will embark on a 29 city
North American tour, while three new exhibitions will open at Graceland. All three will feature a range of memorabilia from his life and
will further excite interest in Elvis collectibles.
There are currently four biographical film projects in the pipeline, according to Hollywood Reporter. Due out over the coming years, these
films are evidence of Hollywood’s belief that Elvis is a money spinner,
thanks to the continuing appetite for the star among the public. We
believe they will also inspire a new generation of Elvis collectors, and
reignite interest among those who grew up with him.
Summary:
The continued robust showing of Elvis memorabilia confirms that
there is a strong body of global collectors.
We have seen:
•
•
Autograph values up 14.26% pa since 2000
Recent strong sales of stage worn items and personal
memorabilia
We believe that the anticipated influx of new buyers to the market
will push up prices significantly over the coming years, as a larger
body of collectors fights over the finite number of items. We believe
that now is the time to act, before prices rise still further.
Key reasons to invest:
• The current low interest environment represents a real
opportunity to build a valuable collection for long term value
• Many alternative investments are classified as ‘wasting assets’
and do not come into inheritance or Capital Gains Tax
calculations
• Unique collectibles have historically been considered ‘safe
havens’ and have a low correlation with traditional financial investments
$55m
2011 revenue generated by
the Elvis Presley estate
• World record prices are being achieved despite the recession
• There are estimated to be 200m serious collectors worldwide
underpinning prices
• The population of the BRIC countries is expected to double
in the next 40 years, adding significantly to the number of
collectors
