The Kids Are All Right combines comedic surprise with poignant emotional truth in a funny, vibrant, and richly drawn portrait of a modern family. Nic and Jules (three-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening and four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore) are married and share a cozy suburban Southern California home with their teenage children, Joni and Laser (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson). The two teenagers were conceived by artificial insemination, and Joni manages to make contact with ―bio-dad‖ Paul (Mark Ruffalo), an easygoing restaurateur. As Paul comes into the lives of the forthright four, an unexpected new chapter begins for them as family ties are defined re-defined, and re-re-defined. Ever the lady, the A-lister made a polite entreaty to the seat stealers before sitting down to watch the film, directed by Lisa Cholodenko. After the closing credits, Moore slipped out and lined up for the bathroom in front of me. Ellen Barkin impishly attempted to convince her to jump the line but Moore laughed and gamely waited her turn. Moore and Annette Bening play a couple of lesbian ―momses‖ raising two teenage children (Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska) from the same hippie sperm donor (Mark Ruffalo), who shows up one day and inserts himself in the family. The film (shot in only 23 days) left the audience alternately tipping over with laughter and fumbling for Kleenex. The family spirit carried over to the film‘s after party, sponsored by Eternity Calvin, and held at the Smyth Hotel‘s newly opened restaurant, Plein Sud. Moore kept her husband and young son close, while Ruffalo was accompanied by his striking wife, Sunrise Coigney. Hutcherson and Moore voiced the theme of the film and the evening: ―family is important, no matter how it comes.‖ Hutcherson later told me that, because everyone on set pretty much came from close families, it was easy to re-create that feeling on set. Patricia Clarkson and Lisa Cholodenko. By midnight, the party was well underway. Upstairs in the breezy, wood paneled restaurant—which looked more like a big country kitchen—revelers crowded around tables heaped with fresh garden tomatoes, organic chicken, and steaming sauteed spinach. Downstairs in the oak-and granite paneled lounge—which felt like a giant wine cellar—the DJ‘s selections were drowned out by laughter, loud conversation, and the clinking of champagne glasses. Guests including Ed Norton and Patricia Clarkson conversed in cozy booths, while starlet Wasikowska placed carried on an enthusiastic discussion with Oscar-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. An evening highlight? Bite-sized éclairs and lemon tarts (topped with fresh berries), which were disappearing by the dozen. Another highlight? The sight of Calvin Klein model and all-around it-boy Ben Hill’s delightful visage. The festivities were momentarily interrupted when, around 11 p.m., one guest fell ill and collapsed on the ground. The stricken man regained consciousness before leaving in an ambulance. The speedy response from onlookers proved that New York‘s party animals can be surprisingly alert in a crisis. The Kids Are All Right Premiere Party Enlivened by Medical Emergency Jada Yuan/ July 1, 2010 Anyone who's dreamed of running through a room screaming, "Is there a doctor in the house?" had a golden opportunity last night at the after-party for the New York premiere of Lisa Cholodenko's lesbianmoms-slash-sperm-donor comedy The Kids Are All Right. As we sat in a booth at Plein Sud, we heard a loud metallic crash and a sickening thwack. A young, tall, healthy-looking guy had fallen from a standing position and practically into our booth, hitting his head on the way down. At least seven people immediately whipped out their cell phones and called 911, and, yes, one or two lucky people got to run around frantically shouting for a doctor. Luckily, a pregnant-and-showing Rachel Dratch happened to have brought a good doctor friend as her date. The doc knelt down, and after ten scary seconds during which he couldn't hear the man breathing (it was a noisy room), the man opened his eyes and began responding to questions. Most of the cast and their celebrity friends were downstairs, oblivious, but David Wain walked by and did some rubbernecking, as did Dustin Lance Black, who happened to choose that very moment to visit the buffet. Party publicist Peggy Siegal moved quickly around the room, giving and getting information. To Focus Features head James Schamus: "You know the saying, 'the kids are all right'? Well, the guests are not all right!" To us: "Was he A-list or B-list?" Neither, it seems, but he was okay. He'd had what appeared to be a seizure, and he got up and walked outside with the EMTs. By that time, the talk of the party (hosted by Eternity Calvin Klein, and sponsored in part by Quintessentially) wasn't how a guy had passed out, but how freaking long it took the ambulance to get there. Other than that, though, the party was really fun. Josh Hutcherson cozied up with a female friend — and re-reiterated that he has not been cast as Spider-Man. Julianne Moore and John Cameron Mitchell, and Ed Norton and Mark Ruffalo paired up and talked shop. A lot of other very pretty people milled about and did not faint. As we walked out, we congratulated Peggy Siegal on having invited so many doctors to the party. She, in turn, asked if we could please write that the guy had fainted because "he was overcome with emotion from seeing the movie." Ah, Peggy. Probably not. But it was a good movie. Jada Yuan/ June 30, 2010 How did you prepare for your sex scene with Julianne Moore? ―You just kind of dive right into that and let nature take its course. A lot of that was improvised. When she‘s holding my face like he‘s a riding pommel, that was all Julianne. It‘s so crazy. You‘ve never seen sex like this. Well, maybe you have, but not onscreen.‖ —M A R K RUFFALO Mark Ruffalo said there was a lot of improvising in your sex scene. ―Yeah, I hit him. I don‘t know how that happened. There were a lot of things we did that I don‘t remember anymore because we did it so quickly. We were in Eagle Rock and it was 115 degrees, and we literally had half a day to shoot it.‖ —J U L I A N N E MOORE This movie really makes fun of L.A. people who are obsessed with organic everything. ―I‘ve met those people. I mean, at home in Australia, people are environmentally conscious, but it‘s not as much talked about: ‗Oh, well, we‘re composting now.‘‖ —M I A WASIKOWSKA Your character watches his moms’ male gay porn, but they weren’t allowed to show you gay porn on set because you were underage. So did you rent gay porn to do research for your reaction? ―Of course. You gotta know what you‘re looking at. You can‘t just pretend.‖ —J O S H What did the MPAA make you cut? ―The MPAA felt that the duration of the sexual acts might be a little long, so I had to cut a little thrusting.‖ —L I S A CHOLODENKO What’s the weirdest thing about shooting a sex scene? ―What you wear: flesh-toned pieces of fabric placed in the right places.‖ —Y A Y A Cynthia Kirchner Ed Norton Dustin Lance Black Rachel Dratch, Amy Poehler Ellen Barkin James Cameron Mitchell DACOSTA Swoosie Kurtz Patricia Clarkson Schamus & Cholodenko at the “Kids” Premiere Brian Brooks/ July 1, 2010 Focus Features head James Schamus and director Lisa Cholodenko stop for a pose at the New York premiere of Cholodenko‘s latest, ―The Kids Are All Right,‖ starring Annette Benning, Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo, co-hosted by Quintessentially and Eternity Calvin Klein. The crowd for the movie (starring Julianne Moore and Annette Bening)included Ellen Barkin, who laughed loudly at the lesbian sex scenes. The Calvin Klein and Quintessentially-sponsored party continued at Plein Sud with Ed Norton and his producer girlfriend, Shauna Robertson, holding hands all night, while girls crowded around the handsome new face of Calvin Klein fragrances, Ben Hill. Julianne Moore Reveals What It Was Like To Play Lesbian In Her New Film! Courteney Palis/July 2, 2010 Hey BFFs, we got a chance to get up close and personal with Julianne Moore at the premiere of her new movie, The Kids Are All Right, and she is a total advocate for gay marriage! You’ve got to see her new movie! Julianne Moore is such a great role model! The 49-year old actress spoke to HollywoodLife.com on the red carpet at the New York City premiere of her new dramedy, The Kids Are All Right, hosted by Quintessentially and Eternity Calvin Klein on June 30. This four-time Academy Award nominee told a sea of reporters that it was easy playing onscreen wife to Annette Bening because it‘s no different from playing wife to a man. ―You know, both of us have been married for a long time,‖ she explained. ―We‘re both parents. We‘re pretty familiar with the paradigm. It was an absolute pleasure to do!‖ It must been, given how long the film took to finish! ―It‘s been a long time coming,‖ she said. ―Five years germination of the project. We‘re so happy to see it finally completed.‖ We can‘t wait for all of our HL readers to see the finished product, Julianne! The guests at the premiere seemed to have enjoyed it as they mingled with their Red Bull cocktails at the after-party! BFFs, make sure to check out her new flick, The Kids Are All Right, when it premieres on July 9! Red Carpet Coverage from The Kids Are All Right Premiere July 2, 2010 The Kids Are All Right premiere was hosted at Landmark's Sunshine Cinema in New York City. The film's stars and some celebrity fans made their way down the red carpet, including Alice in Wonderland starlet Mia Wasikowska and the stunning Julianne Moore — both perform brilliantly in the poignant, hilarious film. Director Lisa Cholodenko and her partner, musician Wendy Melvoin. The Kids Are All Right,' and so is Tariq By Gold Derby / July 1, 2010 It takes award nuts like us to appreciate fully the mad scene last night when a man collapsed and an ambulance was summoned to the party at Plein Sud restaurant following the New York premiere of "The Kids Are All Right." New York Magazine's Vulture blog described the chaos that broke out when my guest to the bash, Tariq Khan -- noted Oscarologist and a news editor at Fox News Channel -suddenly stopped talking while we stood near the buffet table and he fell backward, straight like a timber, his head hitting the stone floor with a loud whack. A doctor and trauma nurse who were party guests rushed to his aid. Lots of people dialed 911 on their cellphones. The first to break through was a freaked-out chap sitting in the booth next to Tariq's prostrate body who bellowed into his phone, "85 West Broadway! 85 West Broadway!" to an operator who obviously couldn't grasp the simple address where emergency medical help was needed. Maybe that's why it took the ambulance so long to arrive. New York Downtown Hospital is within walking distance of Plein Sud, but the ambulance didn't show up for nearly 20 terrifying minutes while we tried to surmise Tariq's condition. For the first few moments I feared the worst. The doctor and nurse pushed all of us away, so I could catch only occasional glimpses of his stiff body on the floor. His lips didn't move and his eyes appeared to be frozen open at first, like a dead man's peepers needing pennies to keep them shut. But then the doctor put a towel under Tariq's head, Tariq blinked and s-l-o-w-ly returned to consciousness as he struggled to respond to the doctor's questions. Initially, Tariq was asked to count one, two, three, four, five, but then Tariq took charge of his own interrogation and this is where the story becomes outrageously amusing to award nuts like us. Tariq, as regular Gold Derby readers know, is an infamous awards encyclopedia. Ask him any obscure Oscar question and he'll spout the answer within a nanosecond. "Ask me an Oscar question," Tariq begged the doctor, desperate to test his own lucidity. "Name a year, any year, and ask me who won." "1966," the doctor replied "The nominees for best picture that year were 'A Man for All Seasons,' 'Alfie,' 'The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming,' 'The Sand Pebbles,' 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' " Tariq said. " 'A Man for All Seasons' won and took six Oscars overall, including best director, screenplay, cinematography, costume design and best actor Paul Scofield." I couldn't see the looks on the doctor's and nurse's faces, but they must have appeared equally shocked and relieved. By the time the ambulance finally arrived, they helped Tariq stand up, and the tardy paramedics and I walked him to the ambulance, and he was whisked to New York Downtown Hospital. As we arrived in the emergency room, Tariq was frisky enough to get into a spat with one of the paramedics who believed quite strongly that Sandra Bullock didn't deserve her Oscar for "The Blind Side." That got Tariq so riled up that the paramedic had to apologize and rescind the opinion so we could get Tariq's blood pressure to return to its normal level and be tested to determine what caused him to collapse at the restaurant. Over the next four hours, doctors and nurses ran many more tests and ultimately determined that Tariq was fine. Their final diagnosis: It just must have been one of those freak fainting spells triggered by a mystery that may never be solved. Well, to medical doctors, that is. Truth be told, Tariq and I know what triggered it. Again, to appreciate the point, you must know Tariq and his awards obsession. Just at the point he collapsed during conversation at the restaurant, he was obsessing frantically over the Oscar predicament facing Julianne Moore and Annette Bening in "The Kids Are All Right." "Both Julianne and Annette are ridiculously overdue to win an Oscar!" Tariq gasped. "They're both great in 'The Kids Are All Right,' but they're both leads. What do they do? Should one of them drop down to supporting so that they can both win? If so, who should go lead and who should go supporting?" His face and voice were flush with Oscar panic as he suddenly dropped down and ended up upstaging both stars' New York premiere. Some of the film's actors attended, including Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, and Josh Hutcherson. Other celebrities like Edward Norton, Ellen Barkin, and Amy Poehler were also there to watch the movie. The film has been hailed by both The New York Times and Rotten Tomatoes as one of the hot movies of the summer and the cast is probably the reason. "The Kids Are Alright" stars shined on the screen and on the red carpet, wearing elegant dresses and fitted suits. Other guests came in more casual clothing like denim and white jeans on the SNL stars and a checkered frock on "America's Next Top Model" winner Kim Stolz. Although it was star-studded and there was a red carpet, the viewing was a low-key event where the actors and other guests could enjoy the movie. Julianne Moore & Mia Wasikowska Are All Right July 1, 2010 Julianne Moore attended the premiere of The Kids Are All Right with costar Mia Wasikowska (in a Rodarte dress) held at Landmark‘s Sunshine Cinema in New York City on Wednesday (June 30). The 49-year-old actress was also joined by costars Mark Ruffalo and Zathura‘s Josh Hutcherson at the premiere. The new film, which will hit theaters July 9, follows two children who were conceived by artificial insemination meeting their birth father for the first time. LOOK OF THE DAY July 1, 2010 Julianne Moore WHAT SHE WORE Moore hit an N.Y.C. screening of The Kids Are All Right in an Erdem print gown accessorized with a clutch and jewelry from Bulgari. Right On July 1, 2010 Jul 1 2010 - Julianne Moore attended the NY premiere of The Kids Are All Right in NYC Wednesday. “The Kids Are All Right” New York Premiere – Mia Wasikowska In Rodarte July 1, 2010 Mia Wasikowska wore yet another sheer look this week when she walked the red carpet for ―The Kids Are All Right‖ New York Premiere last night. The Australian actress wore a dress from the Rodarte Spring 2008 collection – which I like to call the Keira Knightley collection. I hate to say ―I told you so‖, but I did say yesterday that Mia could pull off a bra-less look. This was proved when she wore her black lace and blue ribbon dress sans bra and it didn‘t look tacky nor cheap. The dress is pretty expressive so she didn‘t need any accessories. Her look was completed with simple black peep-toes. I personally would‘ve worn the runway spikey Louboutin‘s, but Mia‘s look works perfectly for her. Julianne Moore Stuns at 'The Kids Are Alright' Premiere; We Swoon Over New CK Model Ben Hill Grace Gold/ July 1, 2010 Julianne Moore stole the red carpet show at New York's premiere of "The Kids Are Alright," in a custom-designed Erdem black-and-white floral gown that the actress paired with sexy smoky eyes and nude lips. "This is not my everyday beauty look! But it's fun for a night out," the 49 year-old mom of 12 year-old son Caleb and eight year-old daughter Liv Helen tells StyleList. Meanwhile, Mia Wasikowska, who recently graced the screen in "Alice In Wonderland," took a spin on the red carpet in a sheer and lacy Rodarte number, accented by the playfulness of a brand new pixie cut. Newcomer and "America's Next Top Model" runner-up Yaya DaCosta sported a dramatic smoky blue eye. "I dress myself because I'm not big enough to have a stylist -- but I did get my makeup done tonight. The eyes make me feel very glamorous!" said DaCosta, who picked out a low-cut dress from Givenchy's Spring 2010 collection for the night. But we were most smitten by Ben Hill, the new face of Calvin Klein's Eternity Aqua fragrance for men, which is made up of a summer-friendly cocktail of citrus, cucumber, water lotus, green leaves, white cedarwood, patchouli, and musk. "It's funny, everyone is asking me for grooming tips now. I'm honestly just a T-shirt and jeans type of guy. I do take care of my skin, but I usually just use what makeup artists on shoot pass on to me. I figure they know best," the Georgia-born model told StyleList. And it sounds like you can expect to see a lot of provocative Eternity Aqua photos of the hottie in the weeks to come. "The fragrance campaign was a lot of fun to work on. The inspiration was all of those sexy Christy Turlington ads," said Hill. Coincidentally, Hill already had some nostalgic experience with Calvin Klein before signing as their new spokesmodel. "My first fragrance ever was given to me by my Aunt -- it was Eternity. I wore it for years." We hope Auntie has since been hooked up with some free perfume as a thank you! Dori’s World: The Kids Are All Right Premiere Dori Cooperman/ July 1, 2010 My dear friend Gary Gilbert produced an awesome movie, The Kids Are All Right, that opened tonight at Landmark Theatres Sunshine Cinema. Focus Features bought the movie from Gary at the Sundance Film Festival. Peggy Siegal put together the event. The theater was packed, but luckily Rob Vecsler saved me a seat. The after-party was held at Plein Sud at Smyth Tribeca. The cast came to the party — including Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Hutcherson and Yaya DaCosta — to celebrate the premier. I also saw Ed Norton, Ellen Barkin, Celine Rattray from Mandalay Entertainment, Scot Lerner, Ali Wise, Stacey Bendet, Jen Raines and Lesley Thompson. Great film, Gary! Red Carpet Buzz: Mia Wasikowska th Erin Clements/March 18 , 2010 The Kids Are All Right star’s Rodarte look is sheer genius While Julianne Moore wore a full-length floral frock to the premiere of The Kids are All Right, her onscreen daughter Mia Wasikowska went for an edgier look. The blond Alice in Wonderland actress opted for a sheer black-and-blue ribbon-andlace dress from Rodarte‘s spring 2008 collection Holy Baby Bump! July 1, 2010 Now THAT is a baby bump, with a belly button you just wanna push and go "Boing!" Amy Poehler literally popped out at the New York premiere of Julianne Moore's The Kids Are All Right. Looks like any day now! So, Amy's pregnant. What's your excuse, Rachel Dratch? Update: Rachel is also pregnant! Great excuse, Dratch! Looks like the top of her dress drank the miniaturizing one. That proportion is just all wrong and folks, if we can turn into our dad for a sec, it‘s a real mesh. (Fabric puns!) Mia was on the red carpet for her latest feature, The Kids Are All Right, and while we can appreciate the fashion risk she took, much like Gwyneth Paltrow‘s goth lace Oscar dress from 2002, there are major boob issues we can‘t get past. On the other hand, Mia‘s costars Mark Ruffalo and Julianne Moore are flawless and Amy Poehler, pregnant with baby number two, looks adorable. She wore a navy and black Rodarte dress from the designers‘ 2008 spring collection. With very short blond hair and black peep-toe pumps, the actress kept it dark and interesting. The frock was a mix of lace, navy trim and a sheer overskirt. In another event, the actress was spotted in a polka-dotted, sheer blouse and skirt by Jason Wu. Sheer dresses have been making a lot of red carpet appearances lately. In the Los Angeles premiere for Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Elizabeth Reaser wore a sheer, long- sleeved, beaded short dress by Zuhair Murad. The actress took it a step further with sheer shoes! A few days later in the Madrid premiere of Eclipse, it was Ashley Greene‘s turn to wear sheer and lacy with a black Donna Karan dress. STYLE STARS – Mia Wasikowska in Rodarte and Julianne Moore in Erdem th April 4 , 2010 The New York premiere of ‗The Kids are All Right‘ provided an unexpected fashion frenzy. The films leading ladies Mia Wasikowska of Alice in Wonderland fame and Hollywood heavyweight Julianne Moore provided the style credentials for the evening. A series of awe inspiring outfits and Mia Wasikowska is beginning to get a name for herself in fashion circles (think the new Carey Mulligan). Last night she did not disappoint choosing to wear a black and blue lacy design from Rodarte. The dress actually comes from spring 2008 but that doesn‘t make it any less fabulous, the perfect mix of elegance and sexiness. Julianne Moore chose not to be outshined by her young costar arriving in a custom gown from Erdem’s spring 2010 collection.
