Press this key for operation x Preventing Counterfeit Documents This machine includes a function for preventing counterfeit documents; if copying documents that resemble paper money closely, you may be unable to get an appropriate image. Laser Safety This Printer is certified as a Class 1 laser product under EN60825-1: 1994. This means that the printer does not produce hazardous laser radiation. Since radiation emitted inside the printer is completely confined within protective housings and external covers, the laser beam cannot escape from the machine during any phase of user operation. xi Additional Information When servicing or adjusting the optical system of the printer, be careful not to place screwdrivers or other shiny objects in the path of the laser beam. Also, accessories such as watches and rings should be removed before working on the printer. The reflected beam, though invisible, can permanently damage your eyes. If flammable substances come into contact with electrical parts inside the machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock. • Do not place the following items on the machine. If these items come into contact with a high-voltage area inside the machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock. If these items are dropped or spilled inside the machine, immediately turn OFF the power switch, and unplug the power plug from the outlet. Then, contact your service representative. - Necklaces and other metal objects - Cups, vases, flowerpots and other containers filled with water or liquids CAUTION • Do not install the machine in unstable locations such as on unsteady platforms or on inclined floors, or in locations subject to excessive vibrations, as this may cause the machine to fall or tip over, resulting in personal injury. • Never block the ventilation slots and louvers on the machine. These openings are provided for proper ventilation of working parts inside the machine. Blocking these openings can cause the machine to overheat. Also never place the machine on a soft surface such as a sofa or rug. • Do not install the machine in the following locations; - A damp or dusty location. - A location near water faucets and water. - A location exposed to direct sunlight. - A location subject to high temperatures. - A location near open flames. xiv • Do not remove the machine’s fixing stoppers after the machine has been installed, as this may cause the machine to fall or tip over, resulting in personal injury. Power Supply WARNING • Do not damage or modify the power cord. Also, do not place heavy objects on the power cord, or pull on or excessively bend it, as this could cause electrical damage and result in a fire or electrical shock. • Keep the power cord away from a heat source; failure to do this may cause the cord coating to melt, resulting in a fire or electrical shock. • Do not insert or unplug the power plug with wet hands, as this may result in electrical shock. • Do not plug the machine into a multi-plug power strip, as this may cause a fire or electrical shock. • Do not bundle up or tie the power cord in a knot, as this may result in a fire or electrical shock. • Insert the power cord completely into the outlet, as failure to do so may result in a fire or electrical shock. • As a general rule, do not use extension cords. Using an extension cord may result in a fire or electrical shock. If an extension cord must be used, however, use one rated for voltages of AC 230 V and over, untie the cord binding and insert the power plug completely into the extension cord outlet to ensure a firm connection between the power and extension cords. CAUTION • Do not use power supplies with voltages other than those specified, as this may result in a fire or electrical shock. • Always grasp the plug when unplugging the power plug. Pulling on the power cord may expose or snap the core wire, or otherwise damage the power cord. If the cord is damaged, this could cause current to leak, resulting in a fire or electrical shock. • Leave sufficient space around the power plug so that it can be unplugged easily. If objects are placed around the power plug, you will be unable to unplug it in an emergency. xv Handling WARNING • Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the machine. There are high-temperature and high-voltage components inside the machine which may result in a fire or electrical shock. • If the machine makes strange noises, or gives off smoke, heat or strange smells, immediately turn OFF the power switch, and unplug the power plug from the outlet. Then, contact your service representative. Continued use of the machine in this condition may result in a fire or electrical shock. • Do not use highly flammable sprays near the machine. If gas from these sprays comes into contact with the electrical components inside the machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock. • To avoid damage to the power cord and creating a fire hazard, always turn the power switch to OFF, and unplug the interface cable when moving the machine. Otherwise, power cord or interface cable may be damaged, resulting in fire or electrical shock. • Do not drop paper clips, staples or other metal objects inside the machine. Also, do not spill water, liquids or flammable substances (alcohol, benzene, paint thinner, etc.) inside the machine. If these items come into contact with a high-voltage area inside the machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock. If these items are dropped or spilled inside the machine, immediately turn OFF the power switch and unplug the power plug from the outlet. Then, contact your service representative. CAUTION • Do not place heavy objects on the machine, as they may tip over or fall resulting in personal injury. • Close the feeder, platen glass cover and editor gently to avoid catching your hand, as this may result in personal injury. • Do not press down hard on the feeder when using the platen glass to make copies of thick books, etc. Failure to do so may damage the platen glass and result in personal injury. xvi • Do not touch the moving sort bins while the machine is copying, as this may result in personal injury. • Turn OFF the power switch for safety when the machine will not be used for a long time such as overnight. Also, turn OFF the power switch and unplug the power plug for safety when the machine will not be used for an extended period, such as during consecutive holidays. • Do not place your hand in the part of the bins where stapling is performed when a stapler sorter is attached, as this may result in personal injury. • Laser beam can be harmful to human bodies. Since radiation emitted inside the product is completely confined within protective housings and external covers, the laser beam cannot escape from the machine during any phase of user operation. Read the following remarks and following instructions for safety. • Never open covers other than those instructed in this manual. xvii • Do not remove the caution label attached to the cover of the laser scanner unit. • If the laser beam escapes from the machine, exposure may cause serious damage to your eyes. xviii Maintenance and Inspections WARNING • When cleaning the machine, first turn OFF the power switch, then unplug the power plug. Failure to observe these steps may result in a fire or electrical shock. • Unplug the power plug from the outlet regularly, and clean the area around the base of the plug’s metal pins and the power outlet with a dry cloth to ensure all dust and grime is removed. If the machine is plugged in for a long time in a damp, dusty, or smoky location, dust can build up around the plug and become damp. This may cause a short circuit and result in a fire. • Clean the machine using a firmly wrung cloth dampened with a mild detergent mixed with water. Do not use alcohol, benzene, paint thinner or other flammable substances. If flammable substances come into contact with a high-voltage area inside the machine, it may result in a fire or electrical shock. • There are some areas inside the machine which are subject to high voltages. When removing jammed paper or when inspecting the inside of the machine, do not allow necklaces, bracelets or other metal objects to touch the inside of the machine, as this may result in burns or electrical shock. • Do not burn used toner bottles or fixing oil bottles. The toner or oil will ignite and may cause burns or fire. xix CAUTION • The fixing unit and its surroundings inside the machine may become hot during use. When removing jammed paper or when inspecting the inside of the machine, do not touch the fixing unit and its surroundings, as this may result in burns or electrical shock. • When removing jammed paper or supplying the toner, take care not to allow the toner to come into contact with your hands or clothing, as this will dirty your hands or clothing. If they become dirty, wash them immediately with cold water. Washing them with warm water will fix the toner and make it impossible to remove the toner stains. xx • When removing paper which has become jammed inside the machine, remove the jammed paper gently to prevent the toner on the paper from scattering and getting into your eyes or mouth. If toner gets into your eyes or mouth, wash them immediately with cold water and consult a physician. • When loading paper or removing jammed originals or paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the original or paper. • When removing a toner bottle from the toner supply port, remove the toner bottle carefully to prevent the toner from scattering and getting in your eyes or mouth. If the toner gets in your eyes or mouth, wash them immediately with cold water and consult a physician. Consumables WARNING • Do not burn used toner bottles or fixing oil bottles, as this may cause toner or oil remaining inside the bottles to ignite, resulting in burns or a fire. • Do not store toner bottles, fixing oil bottles, or copy paper in places exposed to open flames, as this may cause the toner, oil, or paper to ignite, resulting in burns or a fire. CAUTION • Keep toner, fixing oil and other consumables out of the reach of small children. If these items are ingested, consult a physician immediately. Others WARNING • For cardiac pacemaker users: This product generates a low level magnetic field. If you use a cardiac pacemaker and feel abnormalities, please move away from the product and consult your doctor. xxi Legal Limitation on Usage of Your Product and the Use of Images Using your product to scan, print or otherwise reproduce certain documents, and the use of such images as scanned, printed or otherwise reproduced by your product, may be prohibited by law and may result in criminal and/or civil liability. The use of this key should be strictly supervised. For example, avoid installing the copier near water faucets, hot water heaters, humidifiers, air conditioners, heaters or stoves. ■ Avoid installing the copier in a location subject to direct sunlight. If this is unavoidable, use curtains to shade the copier. 1-2 About the Installation Location and Handling ■ Avoid poorly ventilated locations. The copier generates ozone while it is in use. However, the amount generated is not enough to affect the human body. Nevertheless, fumes may be an annoyance if you make a large amount of copies or use the copier for an extended period of time in a poorly ventilated room. It is recommended that you ventilate the room to make the working environment as comfortable as possible. Before You Start Using This Copier 1 ■ Avoid locations where a considerable amount of dust accumulates. ■ Avoid locations where ammonia gas is emitted. ■ Avoid locations near volatile or flammable materials, such as alcohol or paint thinner. ■ Avoid locations that are subject to vibration. For example, avoid installing the copier on unstable floors or stands. About the Installation Location and Handling 1-3 ■ Avoid exposing the copier to rapid changes in temperature. If the room in which the copier is installed is cold but rapidly heated, water droplets (condensation) may form inside the copier. This may result in a noticeable degradation in the quality of the copied image, the inability to properly scan an original, or the copies having no printed image at all. Before You Start Using This Copier 1 ■ Avoid installing the copier near computers or other precision electronic equipment. Electrical interference and vibrations generated by the copier during a Copy job can adversely affect the operation of such equipment. ■ Avoid installing the copier near televisions, radios, or similar electronic equipment. The copier might interfere with sound and picture signal reception. Plug the copier into a dedicated power outlet and maintain as much space as possible between the copier and other electronic equipment. ■ About the copier’s fixing stoppers. Do not remove the copier’s fixing stoppers after the copier has been installed. If you put weight on the front of the copier when the drawers or units within the copier are pulled out, the copier may fall forward. To prevent this from happening, make sure that the copier’s fixing stoppers are in place. 1-4 About the Installation Location and Handling Select a Safe Power Supply ■ Plug the copier into a 230 V AC outlet. ■ Do not plug other electrical equipment into the outlet to which the copier is connected. 1 ■ Do not plug the copier into a multi-plug power strip. Doing so might cause a fire. Before You Start Using This Copier ■ Make sure that the power supply for the copier is safe and has a steady voltage. ■ The power cord may become damaged if it is often stepped on or if heavy objects are placed on it. Continued use of a damaged power cord can lead to an accident. Provide Adequate Installation Space ■ Provide enough space on each side of the copier for unrestricted operation. Before You Start Using This Copier 1 Handling Precautions ■ Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the copier. ■ Some parts inside the copier are subject to high voltages and temperatures. Take adequate precaution when inspecting the inside of the copier. Do not carry out any inspections not described in this manual. ■ Be careful not to drop any foreign objects, such as paper clips or staples, inside the copier. If a foreign object comes into contact with electrical parts inside the copier, it might cause a short circuit and result in a fire or an electrical shock. 1-6 About the Installation Location and Handling ■ If there is unusual noise or smoke, immediately turn the power switch off, unplug the power cord from the outlet, then call your service representative. Using the copier in this state may cause a fire or an electric shock. Also, avoid placing objects around the plug so that the copier can be unplugged whenever necessary. ■ Do not turn the power switch off or open the front doors while the copier is in operation. This might result in paper jams. ■ Do not use flammable sprays such as spray glue near the copier. There is a danger of ignition. ■ The copier generates ozone while it is in use. Before You Start Using This Copier 1 1-8 About the Installation Location and Handling Options a Editor-F1 Use the edit pen to designate areas and select colours from the colour palette. The Editor-F1 is hereinafter referred to as the editor. b RDF-E3 (Recirculating Document Feeder) Originals placed in the feeder are automatically fed sheet by sheet onto the platen glass for copying. It also automatically turns over the originals when making copies of two-sided originals. The RDF-E3 is hereinafter referred to as the feeder. c Document Tray d Control Card The Control Card facilitates the management of the number of copies that are made. e Paper Deck-E1 The paper deck holds up to 2,500 sheets of paper (80 g/m2). The Paper Deck-E1 is hereinafter referred to as the paper deck. f Stapler Sorter-F2 The stapler sorter automatically sorts copies. It can also automatically staple the sorted copies. Parts and Their Functions 1-11 Control Panel Parts and Functions Before You Start Using This Copier 1 a Display contrast dial Use to adjust the brightness of the touch panel display. b Guide key Press to display explanations of modes or functions on the touch panel display. c Reset key Press to restore the settings to the standard copy settings. d ACS key Press to turn the Automatic Colour Selection (ACS) function on or off. The ACS function enables the copier to automatically sense if the original is in black-and-white or colour. e Full Colour key Press to make copies in full colour. 1-12 Parts and Their Functions f Black key Press to make copies in black-and-white only. g Original Recognition key Press to turn the copier’s function to automatically sense the dimension of the original on or off. h Centre Shift key Press to turn the Centre Shift function on or off. The Centre Shift function automatically centres the image of the original on the copies. i Stop key Press to stop an operation in progress, such as a scan job or a Copy job. j Energy Saver key Press to put the copier into the Energy Saver mode. Parts and Their Functions 1-15 Turning On and Off the Copier This section explains how to turn the power to ON and OFF. Before You Start Using This Copier 1 Turning On the Power 1 Make sure that the power plug is firmly inserted into the power outlet. WARNING • Never remove or insert the power plug with wet hands. This may cause an electrical shock. 2 1-16 Make sure that the Security key is in the ON position. Turning On and Off the Copier Press the power switch to the ‘|’ side to turn the copier on. 1 Before You Start Using This Copier 3 The pilot lamp lights in green. The screen below is displayed until the copier is ready to make copies. NOTE • Once the “Please wait. (Auto Start is possible.)” message appears on the touch panel display, you can specify the Auto Start function. (See Chapter 1, ‘Basic Copying’, in the Copying Guide.) The screen below is displayed when the copier is ready to make copies. The copier is ready to make copies after about 8 minutes (at a room temperature of 20°C). Turning On and Off the Copier 1-17 IMPORTANT • Once you turn off the power, texture patterns and scans of text originals made for copying using the Character Composition function are lost. Such settings stored in mode memory or the memory of the Recall key are also lost. • If you turn off the power, wait at least three seconds before turning the power back on. NOTE • The standard copy settings are specified. • The standard copy settings are as follows: 1 1 Auto Paper Selection AE: OFF Exposure: Centre - Copy ratio: 1:1 (100%) - Original type selection: Text/Image - ACS: On - Original Recognition: On - Centre Shift: On • You can change the standard copy settings. (See ‘Changing the Standard Copy Settings’, on p. 224.) • You can select the type of display for this screen using Additional Functions. Turning On and Off the Copier 1-19 Using the Touch Panel Display This section describes the keys that are frequently used on the touch panel display. Information on how to adjust the brightness of the touch panel display is also provided. Before You Start Using This Copier 1 Frequently Used Keys on the Touch Panel Display The following keys on the touch panel display are used frequently. Press to close the current setting screen, retaining the programmed settings in the Additional Functions screen. Press to cancel the function (mode) that is being set, or has already been set, in screens other than the Additional Functions screen. Press to confirm the current setting and proceed to the next step in the procedure. Press to go back to the previous step in the procedure, leaving the current setting as it is. Press to close the present screen. Press to confirm the setting of a function (mode). Press to clear numerical values entered when specifying certain functions. The ‘ ’ mark on some keys indicates that pressing those keys will display other settings screens. 1-20 Using the Touch Panel Display Understanding How Keys Are Displayed You cannot press keys that are greyed out, which means that you cannot set those functions in combination with the presently specified function (mode). Functions that can be set in combination with the presently specified function Functions that cannot be set in combination with the presently specified function Presently specified function CAUTION • Press the keys on the touch panel display gently with a finger. Do not press the touch panel display with a pencil, ballpoint pen, or other sharp objects that can scratch the surface of the touch panel display or break it. NOTE • Before using the touch panel display, peel off its protective film. Using the Touch Panel Display 1-21 1 Before You Start Using This Copier When you press a key on the touch panel display, that key is highlighted and the corresponding function (mode) is set. Although some keys are never highlighted, a key that is highlighted indicates that the function (mode) it represents is specified or active. When you specify certain functions (modes), the characters on some other keys may become difficult to see, that is, they become greyed out. Adjusting the Contrast of the Touch Panel Display If the touch panel display is difficult to see, use the display contrast dial on the control panel to adjust its brightness. Before You Start Using This Copier 1 Darker Lighter NOTE • To make the touch panel display lighter, turn the dial clockwise. To make it darker, turn the dial anticlockwise. 1-22 Using the Touch Panel Display Entering Characters from the Touch Panel Display Entering Alphabets Example: Enter “CANON”. 1 Press [Entry Mode] until “Uppercase” is displayed above it. Pressing [Entry Mode] switches the entry mode between “Uppercase” and “Symbol”. 2 Enter “CANON”. “CANON” is displayed. To enter a space, press [Space]. To move the cursor, press [ ] or [ ]. To enter symbols, press [Entry Mode] to select “Symbol”. Entering Characters from the Touch Panel Display 1 Before You Start Using This Copier In screens that require alphanumeric entry, enter the characters using the keys displayed on the touch panel display or (Number keys) on the control panel, as shown below. 1-23 NOTE • If you make a mistake when entering alphabets, use [ ] or [ ] to position the cursor, then press [Backspace] to delete the alphabet. Then, reenter the correct alphabet. (Clear). • You can also delete all alphabets you have entered by pressing • You can only enter up to 10 alphabets. 3 Before You Start Using This Copier 1 When you are finished entering the alphabets, press [OK]. Entering Symbols Example: Enter “@”. 1 Press [Entry Mode] until “Symbol” is displayed above it. Pressing [Entry Mode] switches the entry mode between “Uppercase” and “Symbol”. 2 1-24 Press [ ] or [ ] to display the desired symbol. To enter alphabets, press [Entry Mode] to select “Uppercase”. NOTE • If you make a mistake when entering symbols, use [ ] or [ ] to position the cursor, then press [Backspace] to delete the symbol. Then, reenter the correct symbol. (Clear). • You can also delete all symbols you have entered by pressing • You can only enter up to 10 symbols. 4 When you are finished entering the symbols, press [OK]. Entering Characters from the Touch Panel Display 1-25 Before You Start Using This Copier 1 Entering in Inches To enter values in inches for all functions that require numeric entry, set the Inch Entry setting to “On” under Custom Settings of the Additional Functions screen. (See ‘Specifying Inch Entry’, on p. 2-11.) The following example (1_1/2") shows inch entry when specifying the Zoom Programme function. Before You Start Using This Copier 1 1 To enter 1 1/2 inches, press [1], [_], [1], [/], and [2] using the number keys on the touch panel display. The entered values are displayed as shown above. NOTE • Press [C] to cancel an incorrectly entered value. • You can enter only 2, 4, 8, or 16 as the denominator. • The value entered in inches is converted to mm by the copier each time it is entered. Thus, there may be a slight difference between the value calculated and the actual value entered. • To enter values in mm, press [mm]. 1-26 Entering Characters from the Touch Panel Display Entering the Department ID and Password NOTE • For instructions on setting department IDs and passwords, see ‘Setting Department ID and Password (Department ID Management)’, on p. 2-27. • If Control Cards are being used, the message “Insert a control card”. appears on the touch panel display. Insert the Control Card into the card slot. (See ‘Control Card’, on p. 5-72.) Operations After Turning the Power On After turning the power on and the copier is ready to make copies, the screen for entering the department ID and password appears. NOTE • For details on how to turn the power on, see ‘Turning On and Off the Copier’, on p. 1-16. 1 Press [Dept. ID] and enter the department ID; then press [Password] and enter the password using (Number keys). If the password has not been set, proceed to step 2 without entering the password. The numbers that you enter are displayed as asterisks (*). NOTE • If you make a mistake when entering the department ID or password, press (Clear), then reenter the correct number. Entering the Department ID and Password 1-27 1 Before You Start Using This Copier When Department ID Management has been set, the department ID and password must be entered before operating this copier. 2 Press (ID). Before You Start Using This Copier 1 The Basic Features screen appears on the touch panel display. NOTE • If the department ID and/or password that you entered is incorrect, the message “This number has not been stored. Enter the number again”. appears. Repeat the procedure from step 1. 1-28 Entering the Department ID and Password Operations After Copying Is Complete When you are finished copying, press (ID) on the control panel. 1 The screen for entering the department ID and password appears. NOTE • To perform copy operations again, reenter the department ID and password. (ID) after you are finished copying, any subsequent copy will be added to your • If you do not press department ID’s total. • Even if you forget to press (ID) after you are finished copying, the screen for entering the department ID and password is automatically redisplayed after a certain period of time elapses. (See ‘Auto Clear Function’, on p. 1-31.) Entering the Department ID and Password 1-29 Before You Start Using This Copier 1 Universal Functions Before You Start Using This Copier 1 Auto Power-off Function If no key is pressed for a certain period of time when the copier is in the Ready mode or the Energy Saver mode, it will automatically turn off. NOTE • You can specify the Auto Power-off function’s timer settings from 1 to 4 hours. (See ‘Changing the Auto Power-off Time’, on p. 2-35.) Energy Saver Mode When the copier is not being used for copying for an extended period of time, lowering the temperature of the fixing unit can help economize on electricity. This is called the Energy Saver mode. Press (Energy Saver) to put the copier into the Energy Saver mode. Press (Energy Saver) again to wake it up for normal operation. NOTE • You can set the energy saving level to -10%, -25%, or -50%, or specify Return to Standard Mode. (See ‘Changing Settings for the Energy Saver Mode’, on p. 2-10.) Auto Drawer Switching Function If the currently selected drawer or the paper deck (option) runs out of paper during a Copy job, the copier automatically locates another paper feeding location loaded with the same size paper, and begins feeding paper from that paper feeding location. NOTE • The Auto Drawer Switching function does not apply to the stack bypass and drawers that have been designated as the feeding location for transparencies. • You can set whether or not each of the drawers and the paper deck (option) is subject to Auto Drawer Switching. The default setting is “On” for all paper feeding locations. (See ‘Setting a Drawer and the Paper Deck for Auto Paper Selection/Auto Drawer Switching’, on p. 2-14.) 1-30 Universal Functions Auto Clear Function If the copier is left untouched for approximately two minutes after a Copy job or a key input, all specified settings are cleared and the standard copy settings are restored. NOTE • You can set the Auto Clear Time from 1 to 9 minutes, in 1-minute increments. The default setting is 2 Paper Supply Indicator The paper supply indicator shows the amount of paper remaining in the currently selected drawer or paper deck (option). Paper Supply Indicator There are four different indicators, as shown below. Display Remaining paper in drawer Remaining paper in paper deck Drawer is approximately 50% - 100% full. Paper deck is approximately 60% - 100% full. Drawer is approximately 10% - 50% full. Paper deck is approximately 20% - 60% full. Drawer is less than approximately 10% full. Paper deck is less than approximately 20% full. Drawer is empty. This indicator shows the remaining amount of paper in all drawers and the paper deck (option) during paper selection (see Chapter 1, ‘Basic Copying’, in the Copying Guide) or when paper in one feeding location has run out during a Copy job. Example: If you press (Guide) after pressing [Margin], the touch panel display changes to the Guide Function screen shown below. Changing the Display of the Basic Features Screen The Basic Features Screen is the screen that is displayed after the power is turned on or after performing a Reset. Select Special Feature, Mode Memory, or Recall, and the main settings screen for the selected function will be displayed as part of the Basic Features screen. Changing Settings for the Energy Saver Mode Pressing (Energy Saver) on the control panel puts the copier into the Energy Saver mode. While in the Energy Saver mode, the temperature of the fixing unit is lowered, thus economizing on electricity. You can set the energy saving level to -10%, -25%, or -50%, or specify Return to Standard Mode. Energy Saving Level Recovery Time -10% Approximately 1 minute and 15 seconds -25% Approximately 3 minutes and 30 seconds -50% Approximately 7 minutes Return to Standard Mode 0 minutes NOTE • Increasing the energy saving level will economize more on electricity but lengthens the time the copier takes to get ready for copying. • The default setting is “-10%”. 2-10 Customising the Copier’s Global Settings 1 Display the required screen as follows: Press 2 (Additional Functions) → [Custom Settings] → [Energy Saver Adjustment] Select the energy saving level; then press [OK]. 3 Press [Done]. Specifying Inch Entry Specifying this setting will ensure that the key for entering values in inches is displayed in the various numeric entry screens. This function is useful when making multiple copies because sorting is automatically specified even if you forget to do so. NOTE • Paper feeding locations set to “On” are used for the following functions. - Auto Paper Selection (APS): This function automatically selects the paper (paper feeding location) based on the original’s size and copy ratio settings. - Auto Drawer Switching (ADS): If a drawer or the paper deck (option) runs out of paper during a Copy job, the copier automatically selects another paper feeding location with the same paper size and begins feeding paper from that paper feeding location. • Turn Drawer Eligibility for APS/ADS off if the drawer or paper deck (option) holds paper of the same size but of a different type and is meant for a different purpose. • The default setting is “On” for all paper feeding locations. • If “Off” is specified for all paper feeding locations, the Original Recognition function may not work. Setting Entry Tone, Error Tone, and Job Done Tone You can select whether or not to sound the following audible tones: • Entry Tone - When pressing keys on the control panel or the touch panel display. • Error Tone 2 - When a malfunction occurs (e.g., paper jam or operational error). Customising Settings to Your Needs • Job Done Tone - When a job is complete (e.g., after copying or stapling is completed). Customising the Copier’s Global Settings 2-15 Changing the Exposure Level (Exposure Level Switch) The Exposure Level Switch function enables you to specify how many levels of gradations of copy exposure are available for adjustment with the exposure keys on the touch panel display. You can select between 9 levels and 17 levels, with 17 levels offering a higher degree of control in the copy exposure. NOTE • The default setting is “9 Levels”. IMPORTANT • The stack bypass and the paper deck (option) cannot be designated as the feeding location for transparencies. IMPORTANT • Loading a drawer designated as the feeding location for transparencies with plain paper will lead to paper jams. To use such a drawer with plain paper, cancel the drawer’s designation as the feeding location for transparencies. NOTE • Only A4 and A4R drawers can be designated as the feeding locations for transparencies. • Drawers that are already designated for use with transparencies are highlighted. • To cancel the feeding location setting for transparencies, select the highlighted drawer again. The highlight and the transparency icon disappear, indicating that the setting is cancelled. • Drawers designated as the feeding location for transparencies cannot be turned on for Drawer Eligibility for APS/ADS. 3 Press [Done]. Customising the Copier’s Global Settings 2-17 Customising Settings to Your Needs 2 Designating the Feeding Location for Thin Paper To be able to feed thin paper (64 to 79 g/m2) from drawers or the paper deck (option), you will first have to designate the drawer or the paper deck as the feeding location for thin paper. IMPORTANT • The stack bypass cannot be designated as the feeding location for thin paper. NOTE • No feeding location for thin paper is specified by default. NOTE • Paper feeding locations that are already designated for use with thin paper are highlighted. • To cancel the feeding location setting for thin paper, press the highlighted feeding location. The highlight and the thin paper icon disappear, indicating that the setting is cancelled. • When a drawer or the paper deck (option) is designated as the feeding location for thin paper, its Drawer Eligibility for APS/ADS setting is not automatically set to “Off”. If you do not want to copy onto thin paper when making copies in the Auto Paper Selection mode, make sure to set the Drawer Eligibility for APS/ADS setting for the feeding location for thin paper to “Off”. 3 2-18 Press [Done]. Customising the Copier’s Global Settings Specifying Colour Palette Sheet Settings (Change Colour Sheet) The Change Colour Sheet function enables you to change the colour palette sheet settings of the copier when the colour palette sheet of the editor (option) is changed. Colour registration for the custom sheet is also performed through this function. IMPORTANT • Change Colour Sheet can be specified only if the editor (option) is attached. • The colour palette sheets can be output only if the IP-ED board (option) is attached. Customising Settings to Your Needs 2 NOTE • For information on the types of colour palette sheets available with the editor (option) and instructions on how to change the sheets, see ‘Colour Palette Sheets’, on p. 5-5. Changing the Colour Palette Sheet Settings Change the colour palette sheet settings on the copier when you change the colour palette sheet on the editor (option). Registering Colours onto the Custom Sheet The Change Colour Sheet function enables you to register colours onto the custom sheet or make changes to the colours already registered. You can copy or duplicate a specific colour from another sheet, provided that the colour is registered under the same key number. You can also make colour changes or other fine adjustments to colours that are duplicated from other sheets. 1 Display the required screen as follows: Press 2 2-20 (Additional Functions) → [Custom Settings] → [ Press [Register Custom Sheet]. Select the key of the colour to be changed or registered; then press [Setting Colour]. The small square in the lower right corner of keys that have colours stored in them are displayed in black. If you press a key that has a colour stored in it, the composition of that colour is displayed on the right side of the screen. (See Chapter 3, ‘Adjusting Colour and Image Quality’, in the Copying Guide.) - Colour Palette Selection: Select a colour from the editor’s (option) colour palette. - Designated Colour Selection: Select a colour from the original or a colour designation sheet. - Registered Colour Selection: Select a colour that was previously registered and stored. - Colour Circle Selection: Select a colour from the colour circle. To continue registering colours to other keys or making changes to the colours of other keys, repeat steps 5 and 6. 2 Customising Settings to Your Needs IMPORTANT • If a colour is selected through the Colour Palette Selection method without carrying out a colour palette duplication, the registered colour is colourless. In this case, always adjust the percentage of yellow, magenta, cyan, and black. (See Chapter 3, ‘Adjusting Colour and Image Quality’, in the Copying Guide.) NOTE • Press [Erase All Settings] to erase all registered colours. • To erase the registered colour, make sure it is selected; then press [Erase]. 7 Press [Done]. Changes to the custom sheet are stored. 8 Press [Print] located to the right of [Custom Sheet]. The custom sheet is output, reflecting the changes that were made to it. NOTE • Make sure that either A3-size or A4-size paper is loaded before printing out a custom sheet. 2-22 Customising the Copier’s Global Settings 9 Cut the output colour palette sheet along the dotted lines, then replace the old colour palette sheet with the new one. Specifying Feeder Auto Start This function allows you to specify whether or not an original placed in the feeder’s (option) single sheet document feeder is automatically pulled into the copier and copied. IMPORTANT • Feeder Auto Start can be specified only if the feeder (option) is attached. You can change the standard copy settings as well as restore them to their default values after changing them. The copier’s original standard copy settings are shown below. You cannot store “0000” as the system settings password. If you do not want to set a system settings password, press NOTE • You can delete the number you entered by pressing 3 (Clear); then press [OK]. (Clear). Press [Done]. Customising the Copier’s Global Settings 2-27 Customising Settings to Your Needs 1 Setting Department ID and Password (Department ID Management) By creating a department ID and password for each department, you can set the copier such that its functions can be used only after the correct password has been entered. This is called Department ID Management. Department IDs and passwords for up to 100 departments can be stored. This function enables you to tally the copy totals for each department. With Department ID Management, the following operations can be performed: • Setting whether or not to use Department ID Management 2 Customising Settings to Your Needs • Storing the department ID and the password NOTE • The default setting is “Off”. Customising the Copier’s Global Settings Displaying Copy Counts by Department You can display the total paper count by department. NOTE • If a system settings password is set, you will need to first enter that password before being able to access department-related functions. Management] If a system settings password is set, enter the password after pressing [Dept. ID. Changing the Auto Clear Time NOTE • The default setting is “2 min”.. 1 Display the required screen as follows: Press 2 (Additional Functions) → [Timer Settings] → [Auto Clear Time] Enter the desired time period using [-] and [+]; then press [OK]. The Auto Clear Time settings are from 0 to 9 minutes (in 1-minute increments). When “0” is selected, the Auto Clear function is not specified. 3 Press [Done]. Setting the Timer 2-33 Customising Settings to Your Needs 2 If the copier is left untouched for a specified period of time after a Copy job or a key input, the touch panel display will return to the Basic Features screen. This is called the Auto Clear function. Changing the Auto Energy Saver Time If the copier is left untouched for a specified period of time after a Copy job or a key input, the copier will automatically lower the temperature of the fixing unit and go into the Energy Saver mode. This is called the Auto Energy Saver function. NOTE • The default setting is “30 min”.. 2 Customising Settings to Your Needs 1 Display the required screen as follows: Press 2 (Additional Functions) → [Timer Settings] → [Auto Energy Saver Time] Enter the desired time period using [-] and [+]; then press [OK]. The Auto Energy Saver Time can be set to 0 min, 1 min, 2 min, 5 min, 10 min, 20 min, 30 min, or 1 to 8 hours (1-hour increments). When “0” is selected, the Auto Energy Saver function is not specified. 3 2-34 Press [Done]. Setting the Timer Changing the Auto Power-off Time If no key is pressed for a certain period of time when the copier is in the Ready mode or the Energy Saver mode, it will automatically turn off. This is called the Auto Power-off function. IMPORTANT • When the copier’s power is turned off by the Auto Power-off function, scanned texture patterns and scans of text originals made for copying using the Character Composition function are lost. Such settings stored in mode memory or the memory of the Recall key are also lost. 2 1 Display the required screen as follows: Press 2 Customising Settings to Your Needs NOTE • The default setting is “1 hrs”.. (Additional Functions) → [Timer Settings] → [Auto Power-Off Time] Enter the desired time period using [-] and [+]; then press [OK]. The Auto Power-off Time settings are from 1 to 4 hours (in 1-hour increments). Pressing [No Settings] will turn off the Auto Power-off function. NOTE • If “No Settings” is currently selected, you must first press [No Settings] once to release it from that setting before pressing [-] and [+] to specify the time. 3 Press [Done]. Setting the Timer 2-35 Adjusting the Copier (Adjustment/Cleaning) This section describes how you can make fine adjustments to the settings of the copier and clean the copier. It is recommended that you perform Automatic Gradation Adjustment and clean the copier regularly. Customising Settings to Your Needs 2 NOTE • The Adjustment/Cleaning screen consists of a list of individual settings. Use [ the desired setting. • When the procedure requires that you press [ manual. ] and [ ], ‘→ [ ] or [ ] and [ ] to scroll to ] →’ is indicated in this Fine-adjusting the Zoom When Differences in the Original Image and the Copy Image Occur When a copy is made, a slight difference may occur in size between the original and the copy image. You can make fine adjustments to correct this error. 1 Display the required screen as follows: Press 2-36 (Additional Functions) → [Adjustment/Cleaning] → [Zoom Fine Adjustment] Adjusting the Copier (Adjustment/Cleaning) 2 Press [-] and [+] to adjust the percentage (%); then press [OK]. The adjustment can be made within the range shown below: - X (horizontal direction): -1.0% to 1.0%, in 0.1% increments - Y (vertical direction): -1.0% to 1.0%, in 0.1% increments If you are making adjustments to either the X (horizontal) or Y (vertical) direction, enter a value for that direction only. 3 Press [Done]. Adjusting the Copier (Adjustment/Cleaning) 2-37 Customising Settings to Your Needs 2 Recalibrating the Standard Exposure If copies turn out to be lighter or darker than the originals despite being copied with the standard or centre copy exposure value, you will have to recalibrate the copy exposure settings of the copier. NOTE • The default setting is the centre value of a scale from 1 to 5. 2 Customising Settings to Your Needs 1 Display the required screen as follows: Press 2-38 (Additional Functions) → [Adjustment/Cleaning] → [Expo. Recal.] 2 Press [Light] or [Dark] to adjust the exposure; then press [OK]. 3 Press [Done]. Adjusting the Copier (Adjustment/Cleaning) Specifying Automatic Gradation and Exposure Adjustments (Automatic Gradation Adjustment) This function enables you to recalibrate the copier when you notice irregularities in the colour of the copy. The procedure involves making test prints and placing them on the platen glass for scanning. The copier will then be automatically recalibrated. IMPORTANT • Make sure that you set the test print correctly. An improperly placed test print can cause the colour NOTE • Make sure that A3-size paper is loaded into the copier before proceeding. • Test prints are not counted as copies. 1 Display the required screen as follows: Press 2 (Additional Functions) → [Adjustment/Cleaning] → [Grad. A Adjst] Press [Test Print 1]. The message “Printing Test Print 1..”. is displayed, and Test Print 1 is output. 3 Place the first test print on the platen glass. Place the test print face down on the platen glass, with the black band along the back edge. Adjusting the Copier (Adjustment/Cleaning) 2-41 2 Customising Settings to Your Needs The Text/Photo Priority function enables you to adjust the text and photo differentiation priority level so that copies are reproduced at a higher quality. Give priority to Text when making copies of originals with fine and faint characters. When making copies of originals with photos that you prefer to reproduce clearly, set the Photo priority higher. Cleaning the Feeder You can clean the roller of the feeder (option) by repeatedly feeding blank paper through it. IMPORTANT • Feeder Cleaning is a function that can only be performed when the feeder (option) is attached. NOTE • It takes about 20 seconds to clean the feeder (option). 2 Customising Settings to Your Needs 1 Display the required screen as follows: Press 2 (Additional Functions) → [Adjustment/Cleaning] → [ ] or [ Place 10 sheets of blank paper into the feeder; then press [Start]. Cleaning the Wire You can set the copier to clean the primary corona assembly wire. Contact your service representative for more information. • Print Gradation Adjustment is usually made via the print controller (option). For details, refer to the 2 Customising Settings to Your Needs print controller manual. This setting may not be possible, depending on the print controller (option) used. Loading Paper into the Drawers When the selected paper has run out, or the selected drawer runs out of paper during a Copy job, a screen prompting you to load paper is displayed on the touch panel display. 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables Follow the procedure below to load paper into the drawers: CAUTION • When loading paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the paper. IMPORTANT • Load paper of the size indicated on the outside of the drawer that is empty. • The drawers can only accommodate paper of 64 to 105 g/m2 in weight. Use the stack bypass to load paper that is heavier. • Do not load 305 x 457 mm or irregular-size paper into the drawers. • The message also appears if the selected drawer is not fully inserted into the copier. Once you properly insert the drawer, the message disappears. 3-2 Loading Paper NOTE • If the message is displayed during a Copy job, you have to press • • • • • (Start) after loading paper to resume copying. If you want to select another paper feeding location that is loaded with paper, press [Done], then press (Start) to resume copying. To load paper of 64 to 79 g/m2 in weight, you have to first designate the drawer as the feeding location for thin paper. (See p. 2-18) To use a drawer with transparencies, you have to first designate that drawer as the feeding location for transparencies. (See p. 2-16) Refer to Chapter 2, ‘Useful Copy Functions’, in the Copying Guide for instructions on the correct way to load transparencies into a drawer. Refer to ‘Loading Paper into the Paper Deck’, on p. 5-29 for instructions on the correct way to load paper into the paper deck (option). 1 Press and then release the button of the drawer that you want to load paper into. Gently press the button all the way to the back. If you do not press the button all the way, you will not be able to pull the drawer out. In this case, push the drawer back in and press the button again. 2 Grip the handle and pull the drawer out until it stops. Loading Paper 3-3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 3 Open a package of paper and remove a stack of paper to load. IMPORTANT • Rewrap any remaining paper in its original package, and store it in a dry place, away from direct 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables sunlight. NOTE • For high-quality copies, only use Canon-approved paper. 4 Turn the paper stack over and place it in the drawer. Even out the edges of the paper stack. Load the paper stack against the right edge of the drawer. When loading paper into the drawer for the first time, set the size plate for the paper being loaded. 3-4 Loading Paper IMPORTANT • If the paper is curled, curl it down before placing it in the drawer. (loading limit) mark on the inside of the drawer. • Be sure not to load paper above the • The physical attributes of paper may change and cause problems in copying due to environmental factors such as dryness or humidity. To prevent such changes in the quality of paper, place the transparent sheet that comes with the drawer onto the bottom of the drawer. Make sure to use the correct-size sheet for the paper you are loading, and place the sheet such that the arrow on the sheet is against the far-right corner of the drawer. • Do not load the following types of paper into the drawer. Doing so may cause a paper jam. - Severely curled or wrinkled paper Thin straw paper Paper which has been copied onto (do not copy on the reverse side either) Paper which has been output using a printer or a copier other than this copier (do not copy on the reverse side either) • Always use the stack bypass to feed paper when you copy onto the rear side of a sheet of paper that already has something copied onto its front side (2nd side of 2-sided copy). • Fan the stack of paper well before loading it. • Do not place paper or any other items in the empty part of the drawer next to the paper stack. Doing so may cause paper jams. NOTE • Each drawer holds about 550 sheets of paper (80 g/m2). Loading Paper 3-5 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 5 Gently push the drawer back into the copier until it clicks. CAUTION • Be careful not to catch your fingers between the drawer and the copier. IMPORTANT • You will not be able to make copies if you load paper beyond the loading limit or if the drawer is not completely pushed into the copier. Always check that drawers are in place and if a drawer is overloaded, decrease the amount of paper to the loading limit. 6 Press [Done]. Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 Adjusting a Drawer to Hold a Different Paper Size If you want to load a new paper size into a drawer, follow the procedure described below to adjust the drawer guides. NOTE • Drawer 2 can be adjusted to hold paper of A3, A4, and A4R sizes. • Drawer 1 is not adjustable and cannot accommodate different paper sizes. 1 Press and then release the button of Drawer 2. Gently press the button all the way to the back. If you do not press the button all the way, you may not be able to pull the drawer out. In this case, push the drawer back in and press the button again. 3-6 Loading Paper 3 Pull out Drawer 2 and remove all the loaded paper. Squeeze the lever on the left guide as shown below. Without releasing the lever, slide the left guide to align it with the mark for the desired paper size. Left guide When adjusting the left guide for A3-size paper, slide it all the way to the left and then fold it over to the right. Loading Paper 3-7 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 2 A4-size paper can be loaded vertically or horizontally. Without releasing the lever, slide the front guides to align them with the mark for the desired paper size. Front guides IMPORTANT • Not adjusting the guides correctly may cause paper jams, produce copies with dirt marks, or make the inside of the copier dirty. To prevent these problems, check that the guides are adjusted correctly for the paper size you are loading. 5 Change the drawer’s size plate to match the new paper size that you are loading. If you load paper horizontally, use a size plate that has an ‘R’ as a suffix (e.g., A4R). Size plate 3-8 Loading Paper Loading Paper in the Stack Bypass If the stack bypass runs out of paper during a Copy job, a screen prompting you to load paper is displayed on the touch panel display. Follow the procedure below to load paper in the stack bypass: CAUTION • When loading paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the paper. IMPORTANT • Note the following points when using the stack bypass: - Copy quantity: 1 to approximately 250 sheets (80 g/m2), 1 to approximately 100 sheets (transparencies) - Paper size: 305 x 457 mm paper, A3, A4, A4R, irregular size paper (182 x 182 mm to 305 x 457 mm) - Paper weight: 64 to 209 g/m2 • Curl down paper before use. There are some types of paper that may meet the above specifications but cannot feed through the stack bypass. • Do not load paper of different sizes or types at the same time. • Only use transparencies that are specifically recommended for use with this copier. Other transparencies may damage the copier. • Make sure to immediately remove transparencies or heavy paper that are output onto the output tray. Failure to do so may result in paper jams. NOTE • Refer to Chapter 2, ‘Useful Copy Functions’, in the Copying Guide for instructions on the correct way to load transparencies in the stack bypass. Loading Paper 3-9 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 1 Open the stack bypass. 2 Adjust the slide guides to match the size of the paper. Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 Slide guides When feeding large-size paper, pull out the auxiliary tray. IMPORTANT • Adjusting the slide guides too tightly or too loosely may result in paper jams or the output of misaligned copies. 3-10 Loading Paper Load the paper in the stack bypass. Make sure that the height of the paper stack does not exceed the limit mark. Load the required number of sheets of paper in the stack bypass with the surface of the paper that was facing upward when the package was opened face up. This is the surface that will be copied onto. Make sure to align the paper with the slide guides and push the paper stack into the stack bypass as far as it will go. 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 NOTE • For high-quality copies, use only Canon-approved paper. Loading Paper 3-11 Adding Toner When the toner has run out and copies can no longer be made, the message shown below appears on the touch panel display. The message explains how to add toner. Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 WARNING • Do not throw toner bottles into open flames, as this may cause the toner to ignite and result in burns or a fire. • Do not store toner bottles in places exposed to open flames, as this may cause the toner to ignite and result in burns or a fire. CAUTION • Keep toner out of the reach of small children. If toner is ingested, consult a physician immediately. • If toner gets onto your hands or clothes, wash it off immediately with cold water. Do not use warm water as this may fix the toner permanently and you may not be able to remove it later. IMPORTANT • Copying cannot resume until the depleted toner is refilled. It is recommended that you prepare toner before it runs out. • Use only the toner recommended for use with this copier. • Never add more than one toner bottle at one time. • Add toner soon after the “Add xxx toner”. message is displayed. NOTE • Press [Previous] or [Next] on the screen for instructions on the procedure to add toner. (Start) after refilling the toner to • If the message appears during a Copy job, you have to press resume copying. 3-12 Adding Toner 1 Open the right front door of the main unit. 2 Push the toner box release lever down. Toner box release lever 3 Grip the handle on the toner box, then pull the toner box out until it stops. Adding Toner 3-13 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 4 Open the cover of the toner supply port of the same colour as the toner to be added. 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables IMPORTANT • When adding toner, check that the colour of the toner bottle matches the colour of the toner supply port. Mixing toner of different colours may adversely affect the copier or the quality of copies. 5 Shake the toner bottle as illustrated below. With the opening of the toner bottle facing downward, drop the bottle about five times from a height of approximately 3 cm onto a hard surface, such as a desk. Repeat the same procedure with the bottom of the toner bottle facing downward. Holding the toner bottle with both hands, slowly turn it upside down and then right-side up again at least 20 times to shake the contents. 3-14 Adding Toner IMPORTANT • When shaking the toner bottle, be careful not to pull the shutter out accidentally. Shutter 6 Line up the toner bottle opening with the toner supply port, then turn the bottle in the direction of the arrow. IMPORTANT • The shape of the toner bottle opening and the toner supply port is different for each colour. If the toner bottle does not seem to fit the port securely, check again to make sure that the toner bottle colour and the colour indicated for the toner supply port match. Adding Toner 3-15 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 7 Pull out the shutter of the toner bottle horizontally. The shutter cannot be pulled out if the toner bottle is not correctly seated on the toner supply port. 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables Shutter Toner is emptied into the copier. NOTE • It takes a while to transfer all the toner into the toner box. 8 Gently tap the bottom and sides of the toner bottle two or three times to dislodge toner clinging onto the bottle. IMPORTANT • When tapping the toner bottle, do not tap it strongly. The toner supply port may break. 3-16 Adding Toner 9 Push the shutter of the toner bottle back into place, then turn the toner bottle in the direction of the arrow. 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables IMPORTANT • Turn the toner bottle completely, until it stops. 10 Slowly and gently lift the toner bottle up and off the toner supply port. WARNING • Do not throw used toner bottles into open flames, as this may ignite the toner remaining inside the bottle, and result in burns or a fire. CAUTION • When removing the used toner bottle from the toner supply port, be careful not to scatter the toner and allow it to enter your eyes or mouth. If toner enters your eyes or mouth, wash them immediately with cold water and consult a physician. IMPORTANT • Do not try to lift the toner bottle without first turning it in the direction as indicated by the arrow in step 9. Doing so may damage the toner supply port. Adding Toner 3-17 11 Gently replace the cover of the toner supply port. 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 12 While pressing down the toner box release lever, push the toner box back into the copier. Make sure that the toner box makes a clicking sound when you push it into the copier, as this indicates that it is correctly seated. Toner box release lever 13 Close the right front door of the main unit. CAUTION • Your service representative will dispose of the used toner bottle. Make sure that the shutter is closed and store it in a location away from open flames. 3-18 Adding Toner Refilling Fixing Oil When fixing oil runs out, the procedure for refilling fixing oil is displayed on the touch panel display. CAUTION • Make sure that the room where the copier is located is well-ventilated before proceeding with the oil refill procedure. NOTE • It is recommended that you prepare fixing oil before it runs out. 1 Open the right and left front doors of the main unit. Refilling Fixing Oil 3-19 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 2 Remove the cap of the oil supply port. 3 Remove the cap of the new fixing oil bottle and attach the nozzle. IMPORTANT • Make sure that the nozzle is firmly attached to the bottle. 4 Refill the oil tank with one bottle of fixing oil. CAUTION • Be careful not to spill the fixing oil while you are refilling it. If oil is spilt, be sure to wipe it clean. Take caution because areas where the fixing oil is spilt can be slippery. 3-20 Refilling Fixing Oil Replace the cap of the oil supply port. WARNING • Do not store empty fixing oil bottles in places exposed to open flames, as this may cause the remaining oil in the bottles to ignite and result in burns or a fire. CAUTION • Attach the cap onto the empty fixing oil bottle and dispose of it as noncombustible garbage. 6 Close the front doors of the main unit. The copier makes internal adjustments. NOTE • You can specify Auto Start while the copier is making internal adjustments after the oil refill. (See Chapter 1, ‘Basic Copying’, in the Copying Guide.) Refilling Fixing Oil 3-21 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 5 Changing the Waste Toner Container When the waste toner container is full, the procedure for changing the container is displayed on the touch panel display. Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 WARNING • Do not throw used waste toner containers into open flames. Also, do not store waste toner containers in places exposed to open flames, as this may cause the toner to ignite and result in burns or a fire. Your service representative will dispose of the used waste toner container. Use the seal removed from the new waste toner container to cover up the opening of the used waste toner container. CAUTION • Used toner cannot be reused. Do not mix new and used toner together. 1 Pull out all the drawers. Press and then release the button of each drawer before pulling it out. Gently press the button all the way to the back. If you do not press the button all the way, you will not be able to pull the drawer out. In this case, push the drawer back in and press the button again. 3-22 Changing the Waste Toner Container Open the cover under the lower drawer. 3 Open the lower left front door. 3 Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 2 Lower left front door 4 Lift up the lever and pull out the waste toner container. For details, consult your service representative. We recommend that you order paper, toner, and fixing oil from your service representative before they run out. IMPORTANT • Do not store consumables in empty spaces inside the copier, such as under the fixing unit or inside Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 drawers. Doing so may damage the consumables or affect the copy quality. Consumables ■ Paper In addition to plain paper (A3 and A4), transparencies (recommended for this copier), and other types of paper are available. For details, consult your service representative. CAUTION • Do not store paper in places exposed to open flames, as this may cause the paper to ignite and result in burns or a fire. 3-26 Consumables and Options IMPORTANT • For high-quality copies, use only Canon-approved paper. • To prevent moisture build-up, store any remaining paper tightly wrapped in its original package. • Only use transparencies that are specifically recommended for use with this copier. Other transparencies may damage the copier. • Do not use the following types of paper for copying. Doing so may cause paper jams. - Severely curled or wrinkled paper - Thin straw paper - Paper which has been output using printers or copiers other than this copier (do not copy on the reverse side either) representative when you need to purchase paper. ■ Toner When the “Add xxx toner”. message appears on the touch panel display, add toner that has been approved for use with this copier. Use the nozzle when refilling fixing oil. Loading Paper and Refilling Consumables 3 WARNING • Never dispose of waste fixing oil bottles in a fire or incinerator. Doing so may result in burns or a fire. • Do not store fixing oil bottles in places exposed to open flames, as this may cause the fixing oil to ignite and result in burns or a fire. CAUTION • Keep fixing oil out of the reach of small children. If fixing oil is ingested, consult a physician immediately. • Avoid all contact with your eyes and skin as fixing oil is an eye and skin irritant. If fixing oil gets into your eyes, rinse them immediately with water for at least 15 minutes. If fixing oil gets onto your skin, wipe it off with a dry cloth or towel and wash the area of contact with a mild cleansing agent. • Be careful not to spill the fixing oil. If fixing oil is spilt, wipe it clean with an absorbent cloth, and then wash the cloth with a mild cleansing agent. Take caution because areas with spilt fixing oil can be slippery. • Do not use the fixing oil or fixing oil bottles for any other purposes. • Do not mix the fixing oil with any other substances. IMPORTANT • Store fixing oil bottles in a cool location where they are not exposed to direct sunlight. - The recommended storage conditions are: temperature below 30°C, and humidity below 80%. 3-28 Consumables and Options Options ■ Universal Drawer A universal drawer can be adjusted to hold paper of various sizes. About the Paper Jam Troubleshooting Screen The screen indicating the location of the paper jam appears on the touch panel display, followed by instructions on how to clear the paper jam. This display repeatedly appears on the touch panel display until the paper jam is completely cleared. ■ Example of screen indicating the location of the paper jam Troubleshooting 4 ■ Example of screen indicating how to clear the paper jam WARNING • There are high voltage areas inside the copier. Be careful not to let metallic objects, such as necklaces or bracelets, come into contact with such areas when you are removing jammed paper or otherwise inspecting the inside of the copier. Doing so may result in burns or electrical shock. 4-2 Removing Paper Jams CAUTION • When removing jammed originals or paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the original or paper. • When removing paper which has become jammed inside the copier, take care not to allow the toner on the jammed paper to come into contact with your hands or clothes. If your hands or clothes become dirty, wash them immediately with cold water. Washing with warm water will fix the toner and make it impossible to remove later. • When removing paper which has become jammed inside the copier, remove the jammed paper gently to prevent the toner on the paper from scattering and entering your eyes or mouth. If toner enters your eyes or mouth, wash immediately with cold water and consult a physician. • There are some areas inside the copier that are subject to high voltages and temperatures. Take adequate precautions when performing internal inspections to avoid burns or electrical shock. NOTE • If paper is jammed in several locations, remove jammed paper in the order displayed on the touch 4 Troubleshooting panel display. Removing Paper Jams 4-3 1 Inspect all areas which appear on the touch panel display, and remove any jammed paper. See the appropriate pages for instructions on how to find and remove jammed paper. Always remove jammed paper slowly and gently to prevent it from tearing. If a jammed paper tears while being removed, be sure to remove any remaining pieces from inside the copier. NOTE • Some areas that are shown to have paper jams may not actually have paper jams. However, always check all locations indicated on the touch panel display in the order given. Be sure to restore all levers to their original positions. Otherwise, the right and left front doors will not close. 4 Continue with the procedure by following the instructions displayed on the touch panel display. Copying resumes once the copier is warmed up. If there is paper remaining to be removed, a screen indicating how to clear that paper jam appears on the touch panel display. Repeat the procedure from step 1. NOTE • You do not have to respecify the number of copies even when you are copying multiple sets. The copier will automatically recalculate the number of copies to make based on the number of jammed paper. 4-6 Removing Paper Jams The Relationship Between the Paper Path and Paper Jam Areas When a paper jam occurs, use the number that is shown on the illustration as a reference for the area of the paper path that needs to be inspected. If the paper deck (option) is attached, move the paper deck away from the main unit. (See ‘Paper DeckE1’, on p. 5-27.) 4-8 Removing Paper Jams 2 Remove any jammed paper. Remove any remaining pieces of paper inside the right side door. If there is paper sticking out from the drawer or the paper transport area, gently pull it out. Look carefully as jammed paper may be difficult to see. 3 Close the right side door of the main unit. If the paper deck (option) was attached, reattach the paper deck to the main unit. If the stapler sorter (option) and the buffer pass unit (option) are attached, move the stapler sorter and the buffer pass unit away from the main unit. Remove any remaining pieces of paper in the output area. 4 Close the front doors of the main unit. If the stapler sorter (option) and the buffer pass unit (option) were attached, reattach the stapler sorter and the buffer pass unit to the main unit. (See ‘Stapler Sorter-F2’, on p. 5-36.) Removing Paper Jams 4-11 Troubleshooting 3 Removing Paper Jams in the Drawers If a paper jam occurs in any of the drawers, a screen similar to the one shown below appears on the touch panel display. Check the location of the paper jam, and using the screen on the touch panel display as a reference, follow the procedure described below to remove the jammed paper. 4 Troubleshooting IMPORTANT • Before removing jammed paper from the drawer, always check for paper jams in the right side door first. (See ‘Removing Paper Jams in the Right Side Door’, on p. 4-8.) If you pull the drawer out without removing the paper jammed between the drawer and the right side door, the paper may tear and leave paper pieces inside the copier. NOTE • The screen that appears differs depending on the options attached. 1 Press and then release the drawer release button of the drawer indicated on the touch panel display. Gently press the button all the way to the back. If you do not press the button all the way, you will not be able to pull the drawer out. In this case, push the drawer back in and press the button again. 4-12 Removing Paper Jams 2 Pull out the drawer. 3 Remove any jammed paper. Troubleshooting 4 4 Restore the drawer to its original position. CAUTION • When restoring the drawer to its original position, be careful not to catch your fingers between the top of the drawer and the main unit. If the paper jam is only located at the stack bypass, opening and closing the right front door after removing the jammed paper enables the copier to recover from the paper jam. You will not be able to turn the lock release lever if the main assembly is not completely pushed in. If the front doors do not close, check to make sure that the green lock release lever is restored to its original position. Troubleshooting If part of the jammed paper shows from the bottom of the transfer drum, carefully pull out the jammed paper while rotating the green resistance knob below the transfer drum in the direction of the arrow. Resistance knob If rotating the resistance knob does not remove the jammed paper, or if the jammed paper shows from the top of the transfer drum, try removing the paper by rotating the green transfer drum knob in the direction of the arrow. Transfer drum knob CAUTION • Do not touch the transfer drum. 4-20 Removing Paper Jams NOTE • Depending on the size of the paper, it may disappear from view altogether at some point while you are rotating the knob. This is not a mistake or a problem. Just continue rotating the knob. 4 Push the main assembly back into place and turn the green lock release lever to the right until it stops. CAUTION • Be careful not to get your fingers caught in the gap when pushing the main assembly back into the copier. 5 Close the front doors of the main unit. If the front doors do not close, check to make sure that the green lock release lever is restored to its original position. CAUTION • When closing the doors, be careful not to get your fingers caught. 6 Follow the instructions on the touch panel display. Check the location of the paper jam, and using the screen on the touch panel display as a reference, follow the procedure described below to remove the jammed paper. 4 Troubleshooting CAUTION • The area around the fixing unit becomes very hot during use. When removing jammed paper or otherwise inspecting the inside of the unit, be careful not to touch anywhere except the green fixing unit knob. Failure to follow this precaution may result in burns. IMPORTANT • Before removing jammed paper from the fixing unit area, always check for paper jams in the right side door and the output area first. (See ‘Removing Paper Jams in the Right Side Door’, on p. 4-8, and ‘Removing Paper Jams in the Output Area’, on p. 4-10.) If paper is jammed in the right or left side of the main assembly, make sure to remove that paper first. Grip the green tab to open the cover of the fixing unit’s output port, then carefully pull out the jammed paper while rotating the green fixing unit knob in the direction of the arrow. CAUTION • Some parts surrounding the green tab are subject to high temperatures. Be careful not to touch anything in this area except the green tab. 4 Push the main assembly back into place and turn the green lock release lever to the right until it stops. You will not be able to turn the lock release lever if the main assembly is not completely pushed in. CAUTION • Be careful not to get your fingers caught in the gap when pushing the main assembly back into the copier. Removing Paper Jams 4-23 4 Troubleshooting 3 5 Close the front doors of the main unit. If the front doors do not close, check to make sure that the green lock release lever is restored to its original position. NOTE • For details, see ‘About the Paper Jam Troubleshooting Screen’, on p. 4-2. • If the touch panel display shows other locations with paper jams, continue checking all remaining locations because there may be paper remaining inside the main unit. Troubleshooting 4 4-24 Removing Paper Jams Frequent Paper Jams If paper jams occur frequently although there is no apparent problem with the copier, either one of the following two reasons may be the cause. Follow their respective instructions to resolve the paper jam problem. ■ There are torn pieces of paper left inside the copier Pulling jammed paper out from the copier by force may leave parts of the paper torn inside the copier, leading to frequent paper jams. If paper tears while you are trying to remove jammed paper from the copier, make sure that you remove all torn pieces. ■ The wire is dirty The assembly wire is dirty and needs cleaning. (See ‘Cleaning the Wire’, on p. 2-43.) Troubleshooting 4 Frequent Paper Jams 4-25 Cleaning the Copier If the original is not copied clearly, clean the following parts of the copier. For high-quality outputs, it is recommended that you clean these parts once a month. • Platen glass • Rear side of platen glass cover WARNING • When cleaning the copier, first turn off the power switch and unplug the power cord. Failure to do so may result in a fire or electrical shock. • Do not use alcohol, benzene, paint thinner or other solvents for cleaning. Doing so might 4 Troubleshooting result in the plastic parts becoming deformed. CAUTION • Unplug the power cord from the outlet at least once a year, and clean the plug’s metal pins and the area surrounding them to ensure all dust is removed. Allowing dust to accumulate in this area may result in a fire. 4-26 Cleaning the Copier Originals Are Not Scanned Clearly Clean the platen glass and the rear side of the platen glass cover by following the procedure below. IMPORTANT • If the platen glass or the rear side of the platen glass cover is dirty, the original may not be scanned clearly, or the size of the original may be detected incorrectly. Clean the platen glass and the rear side of the platen glass cover with a piece of well-wrung cloth dampened with water, then wipe them with a dry cloth. 4 Troubleshooting 1 IMPORTANT • Be careful not to scratch the silver reflecting surface of the platen glass cover. Cleaning the Copier 4-27 Originals That Have Fed Through the Feeder Are Dirty If originals that have fed through the feeder (option) are dirty or if marks not on an original appear in the copies, the feeder’s feeding belt need cleaning. Follow the procedure below to clean the feeder’s feeding belt: NOTE • If streak marks appear on the originals, the feeder’s (option) rollers need cleaning. For instructions on cleaning the feeder’s rollers, see ‘Cleaning the Feeder’, on p. 2-42. 1 4 Clean the feeding belt with a piece of well-wrung cloth dampened with water, then wipe it with a piece of soft, dry cloth. Troubleshooting Feeding belt The Touch Panel Display Is Dirty The touch panel display needs to be cleaned. Wipe the touch panel display with a piece of wellwrung cloth dampened with water or a mild cleansing agent, then wipe it again with a dry cloth. NOTE • The touch panel display becomes dirty with use. It is recommended that you clean the touch panel display once every week or ten days. 4-28 Cleaning the Copier Touch Panel Display Messages This section explains the various messages that appear on the touch panel display. Error Messages Self-diagnostic (error) messages appear on the touch panel display at the following times: • When copies cannot be made because of some operational error. • When copies cannot be made because the conditions necessary for copying are not met. Perform the necessary procedures as indicated by the messages. The following describes some of the messages that require further explanation. NOTE • The messages are listed in alphabetical order. Add black toner. Cause : The copier has run out of toner of the colour indicated on the touch panel display. Remedy : Add toner of the colour indicated on the touch panel display according to the procedure described in ‘Adding Toner’ (see p. 3-12). Add fixing oil. Cause : There is little fixing oil remaining. Remedy : Follow the procedure given under ‘Refilling Fixing Oil’, on p. 3-19. Adjusting... Please wait. Cause : The copier is making automatic adjustments. Remedy : Wait until the automatic adjustments are completed, and the Copy job will resume. Touch Panel Display Messages 4-29 4 Troubleshooting • When you need to make a decision or take some action during scanning or copying. Attach the Paper Deck to the main unit. Cause : The paper deck (option) is not attached properly to the main unit. Remedy : Attach the paper deck (option) firmly to the main unit. Best size A4 is not loaded. Cause : There is no paper that matches the optimal copy size in any of the paper feeding locations. Remedy : Load paper of the indicated size, or select another paper size. (See ‘Loading Paper’, on p. 3-2.) Cannot staple this many sheets. Troubleshooting 4 Cause : The number of output sheets exceeded the bin’s stapling capacity. Remedy : Check the number of copies specified, and reduce the number if it exceeds the maximum stapling capacity. For information on the maximum number of sheets that can be stapled together for the different paper sizes and types, see ‘Staple-sort Function’, on p. 5-40. Check the stapler unit. Cause : The stapler unit is not functioning properly. Remedy : Check if a staple jam has occurred. (See ‘Removing Jammed Staples’, on p. 5-66.) If the stapler sorter (option) does not return to its normal condition, contact your service representative. Cleaning the drum... Cause : The transfer drum is being cleaned. Remedy : Wait for a while. Cleaning the feeder... 4-30 Cause : The feeder (option) is being cleaned. Remedy : Wait for a while. To cancel Feeder Cleaning, press [Cancel]. (See ‘Cleaning the Feeder’, on p. 2-42.) Touch Panel Display Messages Cleaning web needs to be replaced. Cause : There is little cleaning web remaining. Remedy : Although the copier can continue to make copies for a while, contact your service representative as soon as possible. Cleaning wires... Cause : The wire is being cleaned. Remedy : Wait for a while. Close the Buffer Pass Unit front cover. : The buffer pass unit’s (option) front cover is left open. Remedy : Close the buffer pass unit’s (option) front cover. 4 Troubleshooting Cause Close the Stapler Sorter front cover. Cause : The stapler sorter’s (option) front cover is left open. Remedy : Close the stapler sorter’s (option) front cover. Close the front doors. Cause : The front doors are left open. Remedy : Close the front doors. Close the right (left) feeder cover. Cause : The right or left cover of the feeder (option) is left open. Remedy : Close the right or left cover of the feeder (option). Close the right side door. Cause : The right side door is left open. Remedy : Close the right side door. Touch Panel Display Messages 4-31 Dispose of the waste toner. Cause : The waste toner container is full. Remedy : Follow the procedure given under ‘Changing the Waste Toner Container’, on p. 322. Enter correct password. Cause : The system settings password entered is incorrect. Remedy : Enter the correct password, or contact the supervisor of the copier. Image cannot fit on the paper. Troubleshooting 4 Cause : The image is not within the boundaries of the paper. Remedy : Change the amount of image shift. (See Chapter 2, ‘Useful Copy Functions’, in the Copying Guide.) Inappropriate original. Cause : A paper jam occurred because originals unsuitable for the feeder (option) were loaded, or an excessive number of originals were loaded. Remedy : Check the originals. For information on the acceptable originals for the feeder (option), refer to ‘Acceptable Originals’ (see p. 5-10). Insert a control card. Cause : The Control Card is not inserted. Remedy : Insert the Control Card. (See ‘Before Copying’, on p. 5-72.) Insert the key. Cause : The Security key is not inserted. Remedy : Insert the Security key into the main unit, then turn it to the right. (See ‘Legal Limitation on Usage of Your Product and the Use of Images’, on p. xxii.) Load staples. 4-32 Cause : The stapler has run out of staples. Remedy : Replace the staple case according to the procedure described in ‘Replacing the Staple Case’ (see p. 5-61). Touch Panel Display Messages No paper is loaded. Cause : The selected paper feeding location has run out of paper, or the selected paper has run out. Remedy : Load paper into the indicated paper feeding location by following the procedure described under ‘Loading Paper’ (see p. 3-2) and ‘Loading Paper into the Paper Deck’ (see p. 5-29). Alternatively, select another paper feeding location that is loaded with paper of the same size and type. Original cannot be recognised. : The original cannot be recognised. Remedy : If you are using an original that cannot be detected, such as a transparency, turn the Original Recognition function off and manually select the paper size. (See Chapter 1, ‘Basic Copying’, in the Copying Guide.) Paper is jammed in the indicated location. Remove the jammed paper. Cause : An original or paper is jammed at the location indicated on the touch panel display. Remedy : Remove the jammed original or paper following the procedure described in ‘Removing Paper Jams’ (see p. 4-2). Paper of the current size/type cannot be used with this mode. Set the proper paper size/type. Cause : Paper ran out during a Copy job, and paper of a different size and/or type is selected. Remedy : Select paper that is of the same size and type as that which ran out. Place the originals in the feeder. Cause : The originals need to be placed into the feeder (option) in order to make copies with the specified settings. Remedy : Place the originals into the feeder (option). Touch Panel Display Messages 4-33 4 Troubleshooting Cause Reduce the number of originals. Cause : The number of originals exceeds the maximum number of originals that can be set into the original tray of the feeder (option) at one time. Remedy : Reduce the number of originals. For information on the maximum number of originals that can be set, refer to ‘Acceptable Originals’ (see p. 5-10). Remove the original from the platen glass. 4 Cause : The original cannot be fed through the feeder (option) because there is an original on the platen glass. Remedy : Remove the original from the platen glass. Troubleshooting Stapling not possible due to incorrect loading. Cause : Stapling could not be completed because the density of the original is too high. Remedy : Remove all paper from the sort bins. Stopped due to incorrect loading. Remove paper from the sorter. Cause : The stapler sorter (option) stopped while making two-sided copies using the stack bypass because the output copies have markedly different copy exposures on each side of the paper. Remedy : Remove all paper from the sort bins. The feeder is out of order. Cause : The feeder (option) is not working. Remedy : Contact your service representative. You can continue to make copies without using the feeder (option). There is no designated area on the recognised original. 4-34 Cause : There is no designated area on the original. Remedy : Make sure you have properly designated areas. Touch Panel Display Messages There is no loaded paper with the same size as the slide guide width. Adjust the slide guide width and reset the paper size. Cause : The paper size specified through the touch panel display is different from the width of the slide guides on the stack bypass. Remedy : Adjust the slide guides to match the size of the paper loaded in the stack bypass. This number has not been stored. Enter the number again. Cause : The number entered is incorrect. Remedy : Enter the correct number, or contact the supervisor of the copier. This size cannot be stapled. Cause : The specified paper size cannot be stapled. Remedy : The paper sizes that can be stapled are A3, A4, and A4R. (See ‘Staple-sort Function’, on p. 5-40.) Troubleshooting 4 This staple position is not possible. Cause : The selected paper size cannot be stapled in the designated position. Remedy : Reselect a different paper size, or change to the appropriate staple position for the selected paper size. For information on the available staple positions for each paper size, refer to ‘Staple-sort Function’ (see p. 5-40). Touch Panel Display Messages 4-35 Service Call Message If a malfunction occurs and the copier cannot operate normally, a screen like the one shown below is displayed. Follow the instructions given. WARNING 4 Troubleshooting • Do not insert or unplug the power plug with wet hands, as this may result in an electrical shock. CAUTION • Always grasp the plug portion when unplugging the power cord. Pulling on the power cord may expose or snap the core wire, or otherwise damage the power cord. If the cord is damaged, electricity may leak and result in a fire or electrical shock. 1 Turn the power switch off, then turn the power switch back on. IMPORTANT • Even if the copier operates normally after the power switch is turned off and then on again, the colour of the first output copy after that may not be crisp. 4-36 Touch Panel Display Messages If the copier still does not operate normally, contact your service representative after performing the following procedures. IMPORTANT • The IP-ED board (option) must be installed to install the editor. This may result in an incorrect entry. • Be careful not to let the connector of the editor come loose while the copier’s power is turned on because this may damage the copier. Editor-F1 5-3 NOTE • If the edit pen is used to designate a position that has been heavily shaded with a pencil, accurate area designation may be difficult. • Consult with your service representative about how to connect the editor to the copier. Placing an Original Place the original with the surface to be copied face up on the editor, aligning the original’s topright corner with the mark. There are four colour palette sheets: colour sheet A, colour sheet B, colour sheet C, and a custom sheet. Colour sheets A, B and C already have colours stored in them. The following illustrates the colours of the various colour palette sheets. NOTE • Refer to Chapter 7, ‘Appendix’, in the Copying Guide for information on the actual colours. Once a change has been made, print out the modified colour palette sheet and use it to replace the current sheet on the editor. IMPORTANT • When using the platen glass to copy thick originals such as books, do not press down hard on the feeder. 5-8 Recirculating Document Feeder RDF-E3 Functions of the Feeder The feeder automatically feeds originals placed in its original tray to the platen glass for copying. This eliminates the need to repeatedly place originals on the platen glass when copying multipage documents. After the copying of each original is complete, the original is delivered back into the original tray. ■ Automatic two-sided original feeding When two-sided copying is specified, the feeder automatically flips the original placed in the original tray and sends it to the platen glass for copying. ■ Single sheet document feeding Insert originals one sheet at a time into the single sheet document feeder. The single sheet document feeder is useful for making copies of originals that you want to avoid getting curled or folded. - Multi-page Enlargement Colouring Colour Conversion Composition Any function whose settings include a colour selected through the Designated Colour Selection method - Area Designations of enclosed areas - Texture • The feeder’s single sheet document feeder cannot be used when making copies with the following functions: - Image Combination - 2 → 1-sided - Cover Sheet Recirculating Document Feeder RDF-E3 5-9 5 Handling Options NOTE • The feeder cannot be used when any one of the following functions is specified: Acceptable Originals You can use the feeder to copy originals with the following specifications. ■ Weight of originals Original tray: 50 to 200 g/m2 (129 to 200 g/m2 for vertically placed A4-size originals only) Single sheet document feeder: 38 to 200 g/m2 ■ Size of originals A3, A4, A4R, A5 ■ Copy quantity The number of originals that can be placed into the feeder’s original tray at one time is as follows: A3: 50 sheets (80 g/m2) A4, A4R, A5: 100 sheets (80 g/m2) 5 Handling Options IMPORTANT • Do not place the following types of originals in the feeder: • • • • 5-10 - Originals with tears or large binding holes - Severely curled originals or originals with sharp folds - Clipped or stapled originals - Carbon-backed paper or other originals which might not feed smoothly - Transparencies and other highly transparent originals Originals that are themselves colour copies may not feed properly through the feeder, particularly if they are copies that contain a large amount of toner. For these types of originals, it is highly recommended that you use the platen glass for making copies. When you use originals that are themselves colour copies, it is highly recommended that you use the single sheet document feeder. If you place originals onto the original tray, they may be folded or torn. If you load colour copy originals and other types of originals together, the maximum loading capacity changes to the following: - A3: 25 sheets - A4, A4R, A5: 50 sheets Always check the condition of originals that have been fed through the feeder repeatedly. When making copies of the same originals repeatedly, they may become folded or wrinkled and may not feed smoothly. Recirculating Document Feeder RDF-E3 Feeding Originals from the Original Tray Follow the procedure below when making copies using the feeder’s original tray: Adjust the slide guides to match the size of the originals. Slide guides If you are using A3- or A4R-size originals, flip open the auxiliary tray for support before placing the originals, as shown in the illustration below. Regardless of whether the originals are placed in the vertical or horizontal orientation, always set originals with the first page on top and the top edge along the back edge of the original tray. Slide the originals as far back as they will go, until the original set indicator lights. IMPORTANT • Even out the edges of the originals before placing them into the original tray. • A5-size originals can only be placed vertically. • Do not place originals of different sizes together into the original tray. • Make sure that there is no original on the platen glass before placing your originals into the original Handling Options 5 tray. NOTE • Place A4-size originals from 129 to 200 g/m2 in weight vertically. • Flip open the auxiliary tray when placing A3-size or A4R-size originals into the original tray. • The number of originals that can be placed into the feeder’s original tray at one time is as follows: - A3: - A4, A4R, A5: 3 Press 50 sheets (80 g/m2) 100 sheets (80 g/m2) (Start). Copying starts. IMPORTANT • Do not add or remove originals from the original tray after copying begins. • Regardless of whether or not the Original Recognition function is turned on, the feeder automatically detects the size of the originals once originals are placed into the original tray. If you want to place originals on the platen glass and have the copier automatically detect the size of the original, make copies with the feeder lifted up. 5-12 Recirculating Document Feeder RDF-E3 Feeding Originals from the Single Sheet Document Feeder Follow the procedure below when making copies using the feeder’s single sheet document feeder: 1 Open the single sheet document feeder. 2 Adjust the slide guide on the single sheet document feeder to match the size of the original. Regardless of whether the originals are of vertical or horizontal orientation, always set originals with their top edge along the back edge of the single sheet document feeder. The original is automatically pulled into the feeder and copying begins. IMPORTANT • If the Feeder Auto Start setting (see p. 2-23) is turned off, the original will not be automatically pulled 5 into the feeder and copied. Press (Start) to begin copying. Handling Options • The original is delivered back to the single sheet document feeder after it has been copied. Be sure to remove the original after you are finished copying. • If the original is curled, uncurl it completely before placing it into the single sheet document feeder. 5-14 Recirculating Document Feeder RDF-E3 Removing Paper Jams in the Left Feeder Cover If a paper jam occurs in the left feeder cover, a screen similar to the one shown below appears on the touch panel display. Check the location of the paper jam, and using the screen on the touch panel display as a reference, follow the procedure described below to remove the jammed originals. CAUTION 5 • When removing jammed originals, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the Handling Options original. NOTE • The screen that appears differs depending on the options attached. 1 Remove all originals from the original tray. Routine Cleaning Clean the following parts of the feeder whenever copies appear dirty. Feeding Belt Clean the feeding belt with a piece of well-wrung cloth dampened with water, then wipe it with a piece of soft, dry cloth. Feeding Belt Recirculating Document Feeder RDF-E3 5-25 5 Handling Options 4 Note on Feeder Cleaning If the feeder’s roller is dirty, black lines will appear on originals that have been fed through the feeder for copying. Moreover, paper jams may occur more frequently, because of dirt that has accumulated in the feeder. Whenever these situations occur, you need to clean the feeder. (See ‘Cleaning the Feeder’, on p. 2-42.) Up to 2,500 sheets (80 g/m2) of paper can be loaded into the paper deck. IMPORTANT • You may not be able to open the paper deck when the copier is in the Energy Saver mode. In this case, press (Energy Saver) to bring the copier out of the Energy Saver mode, then press the paper deck’s open button. NOTE • The paper size of the paper deck is fixed at A4. Loading Paper into the Paper Deck If you select the paper deck when it has no paper loaded in it, or if the paper deck runs out of paper during a Copy job, a screen prompting you to load paper is displayed on the touch panel display. Follow the procedure below to load paper into the paper deck: • When loading paper into the copier, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the paper. IMPORTANT • The paper deck can only accommodate paper from 64 to 105 g/m2 in weight. Use the stack bypass to load paper that is heavier. NOTE • If the message is displayed during a Copy job, you have to press (Start) after loading paper to resume copying. • If you select another paper feeding location that is loaded with paper, press [Done] and then press (Start) to resume copying. • To load paper of 64 to 79 g/m2 in weight, you have to first designate the paper deck as the feeding location for thin paper. The lifter automatically descends to the paper loading position. 2 Open a package of paper and remove a stack of paper to load. Handling Options 5 IMPORTANT • Rewrap any remaining paper in its original package, and store it in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. NOTE • For high-quality copies, use only Canon-approved paper. 5-30 Paper Deck-E1 Load the stack of paper into the paper deck, with the surface of the paper that was facing upward when the package was opened placed face up. Make sure that the lifter has lowered before loading the paper. Stack paper neatly against the inner paper guide. 5 IMPORTANT • If the paper is curled, curl it down before placing it into the paper deck. • Make sure that the height of the paper stack does not exceed the loading limit ( ) mark. • Do not load the following types of paper into the paper deck. Doing so may cause a paper jam. - Severely curled or wrinkled paper Thin straw paper Transparencies Paper that has been previously copied onto by this copier (do not copy on the reverse side either) Paper that has been output using a printer or a copier other than this copier (do not copy on the reverse side either) • Always use the stack bypass to feed paper when you copy onto the rear side of a sheet of paper that already has something copied onto its front side (2nd side of 2-sided copy). • Fan the stack of paper well before loading it. • Do not place paper or any other items in the empty part of the paper deck. Doing so may cause paper jams. Paper Deck-E1 5-31 Handling Options 3 NOTE • You can load up to 2,500 sheets of paper (80 g/m2) into the paper deck. • You have to load the paper deck in stages, adding approximately 500 sheets of paper (80 g/m2) each time. If the paper deck can accommodate more paper, the lifter will descend once again. • You can only load A4-size paper into the paper deck. Paper cannot be loaded horizontally. • The changing of the loading paper size must be carried out by a service representative. Contact your service representative for details. 4 Close the paper deck. CAUTION • When closing the paper deck, be careful not to get your fingers caught. 5-32 Paper Deck-E1 Removing Paper Jams in the Paper Deck If a paper jam occurs in the paper deck, a screen similar to the one shown below appears on the touch panel display. Check the location of the paper jam, and using the screen on the touch panel display as a reference, follow the procedure described below to remove the jammed paper. WARNING necklaces, bracelets or other metallic objects to touch the inside of the paper deck, as this may result in burns or electrical shock. CAUTION • When removing jammed paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the paper. NOTE • The screen that appears differs depending on the options attached. 1 Push the paper deck release button, then pull the paper deck away from the main unit. Stapler Sorter-F2 5-37 Functions of the Stapler Sorter The stapler sorter is equipped with the following functions: ■ Sort Function When copying a multi-page document, copies are automatically sorted into sets arranged in page order. ■ Group Function When copying a multi-page document, the Group function automatically sorts output sheets by page. All copies of the same original page are grouped together. ■ Staple-sort Function When copying a multi-page document, copies are automatically sorted into sets arranged in page order and stapled together. 5 • Do not touch the bins of the stapler sorter when the copier is in the middle of a Copy job. Once the output exceeds the capacity of the bins, copying will temporarily stop and will only resume after all the output copies are removed from the bins. When copying onto A4R-size paper, the output copies may only be sorted but not stapled depending on the copy exposure. When this happens, the message “Stapling not possible due to incorrect loading”. will appear on the touch panel display. In this case, manual stapling is also disabled. Manual Stapling Function (Stapling Start/Stop) lights after copying with the Sort function is complete. Pressing this key will staple the copies in all the bins. Use it when you want to manually staple unstapled copies after removing them from the bins. However, depending on the copy exposure setting, the following situations can occur. Sorting or Staple-sorting Stops When making two-sided copies using the stack bypass, sorting may stop if the copies have markedly different copy exposures on each side of the paper. Also, the sorting of A4R-size copies may stop depending on the copy exposure. When this happens, the following message is displayed. Handling Options 5 Copying will automatically resume after you remove the copies from the bins. NOTE • If the number of output sheets exceeds the stapling capacity, the copies will be sorted but not stapled. In this case, manual stapling is also disabled. • The screen that appears differs depending on the options attached. Stapler Sorter-F2 5-45 Copies Are Not Stapled Together ■ When the copy exposure is the cause Depending on the copy exposure, stapling may not be executed when copying on A4R-size paper even if the Staple-sort function is specified. When this happens, the following message is displayed. Manual stapling is also disabled when this happens. Remove all copies from the bins. If toner enters your eyes or mouth, wash immediately with cold water and consult a physician. NOTE • The screen that appears differs depending on the options attached. Replacing the Staple Case When the stapler runs out of staples, the (Load Staples) indicator lights and the following message is displayed on the touch panel display. Follow the procedure below to replace the staple case inside the staple cartridge: IMPORTANT • Only replace staples when the (Load Staples) indicator lights and the replace staple message is displayed. Removing the staple cartridge at any other time may lead to a malfunction. NOTE • The “Load staples”. message appears only when copying with the Staple-sort function specified. • The screen that appears differs depending on the options attached. Stapler sorter front cover 2 5 Grip the stapler unit by the green handle and pull it out of the stapler sorter until it stops. Handling Options Stapler unit 3 5-62 Press the green button to unlock the stapler section. Stapler Sorter-F2 4 Remove the empty staple cartridge from the stapler unit. IMPORTANT • Do not remove any remaining staples in the stapler unit. 5 Press the green button, then remove the empty staple case. If there are any staples remaining in the staple case, the case cannot be removed. Handling Options 5 6 Place a new staple case into the staple cartridge by aligning the arrows on the case and the cartridge. Make sure that the staple case is firmly and securely seated in the staple cartridge. Press the case into the cartridge until you hear a click. Seal Stapler Sorter-F2 5-63 IMPORTANT • Use only staple cases intended for use with this copier. • Do not remove the seal that holds the staples together before placing the staple case into the staple cartridge. 7 5 Pull the seal holding the staples together straight up to remove it. Handling Options IMPORTANT • Make sure you pull the seal straight up because it may tear if you pull it at an angle. 8 Insert the staple cartridge back into the stapler unit. Push the cartridge until it clicks into position. The 5-64 (Load Staples) indicator becomes dimmed. Stapler Sorter-F2 9 Make sure that the staple cartridge is firmly secured, then restore the stapler unit to its original position. 10 Close the front cover of the stapler sorter. IMPORTANT • Make sure that the front cover of the stapler sorter is closed properly. • After replacing the staple cartridge, no staples may appear for the first eight stapling attempts. It is recommended that you perform manual stapling after replacing the staple cartridge. Press (Stapling Start/Stop) until your copies are stapled. Stapler Sorter-F2 5-65 Removing Jammed Staples When a staple jam occurs while using the stapler sorter, (Stapling Start/Stop) flashes and the following message is displayed on the touch panel display. Follow the procedure described below to remove the jammed staples: NOTE • The screen that appears differs depending on the options attached. 5 Handling Options 1 Open the front cover of the stapler sorter. Stapler sorter front cover 2 Grip the stapler unit by the green handle and pull it out of the stapler sorter until it stops. Gently lift up the staple cover by its metal tab with your thumb while unlocking the stopper with your index finger. Handling Options 5 Stopper Metal tab Staple cover 5 Remove all jammed staples. Make sure that the staple cover is locked into position by the stopper. 7 Restore the stapler unit to its original position. Push the staple unit in until it is locked. NOTE • If the Basic Features screen does not appear on the touch panel display even when the Control Card is inserted, make sure that: - The Control Card is inserted in the correct direction. - The Control Card is inserted as far as it can go. - An unusable Control Card is not inserted. (For example, cards which are damaged, cards already used to the set limit, or cards prohibited from use.) • Refer to the manual that came with the Control Card for detailed information on the Control Card.
