57 fall program - Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra
Letter from IWC President Welcome to Iowa Wesleyan College and this evening’s performance of the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony and Iowa Wesleyan College are wonderful examples of collaboration, partnership, and dedicated service to our community and Southeast Iowa. As a college that believes in promoting and engaging in the arts, it is fitting to have the Southeast Iowa Symphony organization based on our campus. We are also pleased that the Symphony provides outstanding opportunities for students of all ages to perform, gain exposure, and grow in appreciation for the arts. Indeed, the Southeast Iowa Symphony obtains rave reviews through its community involvement and the high quality performances presented for the listener. This year also provides a grand opportunity for Iowa Wesleyan and the Symphony as Iowa Wesleyan commences the renovation of the Chapel facility. The end result of this renovation will provide a significantly enhanced performance environment for the Southeast Iowa Symphony and other events held in this turn-of-the-century structure. You are invited to be a participant in this truly exciting time for Iowa Wesleyan College as it continues to transform the Chapel and the learning environment for our students and the community. Enjoy this evening’s performance and, while you do, envision the Chapel Auditorium in its renovated state. Sincerely, William N. Johnston, President Iowa Wesleyan College Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra 601 North Main Street - Mount Pleasant, IA 52641 Phone: 319-385-6352 E-mail: seiso@iwc.edu www.seiso.us Front cover photo by Rod Gerst 1 Fall 2007 concert sponsor 2 Letter from SEISO President What a pleasure it is to welcome each of you to this concert of the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra’s 2007-2008 season. Many of you will know of my long association with the Orchestra as conductor from 1961 to 1987. Several of you have been strong supporters of the Orchestra for at least that many years— thanks to you for assuring the continued growth and expansion of Orchestra services. In a recent Orchestra board workshop, the leader asked us what southeastern Iowa would be missing if the Orchestra were not here. What a long list developed! It deserves to be repeated for you: 10 season concerts; 2 concerts for school audiences; youth string festival for string students; the Marilyn Minford McCoid annual high school music talent competition; two Pops Concerts; the huge July picnic/fireworks concert in Burlington; 3 Kidsymphony performances; gigantic cultural attraction for hundreds of newcomers to southeastern Iowa; the attraction of fine performer/teachers to southeastern Iowa. You likely can add to the list through your personal experience. But I want to challenge each of you to support the Orchestra is a new way: TO ACTIVELY HELP OUR AUDIENCES GROW. I have read that about three percent of the nation’s population attends orchestra concerts regularly. Think about the population of this area; is three percent in attendance for this concert? If not, why not? YOU are our best ambassadors to promote the Orchestra. Think of those you know who are not here for this concert and invite them to the next one. Offer to taxi them to the next concert. Invite them to a meal before the concert. Sponsor a pre-concert party in your home. Or consider all of the above. The Orchestra concert is an outstanding event, comparable to orchestra concerts in the largest cities of Iowa but at a fraction of the cost. It deserves your passionate recommendation; your friends will thank you for the experience. Iowa continues to be a lovely, healthy place to grow. Help us grow the audience. Sincerely, Ruth Keraus, President SEISO Governing Board 3 Southern Iowa Mental Health Center Henry County Health Center 407 S.
