SAAA to host July 10 event to benefit Meals on Wheels

The Frederick County Active
Living Center is sponsoring a
Pancake and Sausage Breakfast,
Bake Sale and Bazaar on Saturday, July 10 at Stephens City
United Methodist Church, Main
Street in Stephens City to benefit
the Shenandoah Area Agency on
Aging for Meals on Wheels. The
event costs $5 per person and begins with breakfast from 7 to 11
a.m. The bake sale and bazaar
will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Shenandoah Area Agency
on Aging (SAAA) is a non profit
organization that services areas
to include the counties of Clarke,
Frederick, Page, Shenandoah,
Warren and the town of Winchester. Their goal is to provide
a variety of high quality services
and opportunities which enhance the dignity and independence of 60 plus aged persons
and promote their contributions
throughout the community. The
agency’s services are multifaceted and according to their website are designed to “assist older
persons who wish to stay in their
own homes, to provide information for seniors and their families, to protect individuals living
in long term care residences and
to help them stay active and provide community service.”
The SAAA was incorporated
in July of 1975, and is the only
comprehensive regional provider
of support services that enable
older persons to continue living
in their own homes. They believe
that as the older population increases their services will be even
more critical in controlling long
term care costs and providing inhome care for the elderly.
Various programs are available
to help seniors in our area. WellTran is a transportation program
which gives seniors the opportunity to stay active around town.
WellTran is a non-emergency,
fee-based transportation for senior citizens 60 years and older,
and persons 18 years and older
with disabilities. Rides are available Monday thru Friday between
the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.
Case Management is the process
of connecting seniors to needed
services. The process generally begins with a referral from
clients, family members, hospitals or nursing home discharge
planners. SAAA provides a variety of in-home services to meet
the health and wellness needs
of our clients. In 2008, SAAA
accepted the Anne McKinley
Rural Aging Award from the
National Council on Aging and
the National Institute on Community Based Long Term Care.
The award recognizes individuals and/or projects in rural areas
that have “plowed new ground”
with regard to serving old persons. SAAA was recognized for
creating “Our Place - Shenandoah,” a community respite site
providing care for individuals
with Alzheimers and dementia.
The Ombudsman program helps
with long term care facilities. An
ombudsman is available to advocate for residents of nursing
homes and assisted living facilities by providing information on
how to find a facility, what to do
to get quality care, how to resolve problems, and how to post
a complaint to the facility. SAAA
provides many more services to
senior citizens throughout the
Northern Shenandoah Valley. To

When I say that I think Arizona
is doing the right thing, some
will assume that I don’t like immigrants or Mexicans. Nothing
could be further from the truth.
I have endeavored to learn Spanish so that I can speak with the
Latinos among us. My daughterin-law is an immigrant, a legal
immigrant, as is her daughter
who is now my granddaughter.
I believe that our nation’s immigration laws should either be
enforced or changed because we
cannot remain a lawful society if
we set a precedent that laws we
don’t like can just be ignored.
We are in this mess because
Congress has been too cowardly
to confront the issue. If we allow more legal immigrants, or
restore the old guest worker
system, labor unions will complain that it undermines American workers. On the other hand
politicians fear offending Latino
voters by enforcing existing law.

working conditions for those
who harvest our food improve
so that it is attractive to those
already here. I’m ashamed to
know the condition of the people
who harvest the food I eat. But
that would make grocery bills
higher and the money left over
for Ipods and cell phones less, so
politicians won’t to that either.)

Outdoor event for Prosperity
Landscaping company holds grand opening at the Commons
Prosperity Landscaping was recognized by the Top of VA Regional Chamber during the grand opening of the ribbon cutting event on Saturday, June 26 at the
Commons in Stephens City.

The heat didn’t keep the crowd
away last Saturday during Prosperity Landscaping’s grand opening at the Commons in Stephens
City. The outdoor event was held
to promote the company’s services for both residential and
commercial properties. The goal
was to “get our name out there,
inform people of our work, get
some leads and give some estimates,” stated owners Brian Wis-
mer and Rick Settle.
Members of the Top of Virginia
Regional Chamber came to show
support during the ribbon cutting event and to celebrate the
grand opening of this joint venture. The company agrees this
was the best way to promote this
type of business. The team was
on hand to answer any questions, set up appointments, and
offer project estimates throughout the day. Many guests signed
up for a free estimate on projects
such as landscaping, walls, patios
and tree screens while two local
bands provided entertainment
and giveaways included hot dogs,
sodas and hourly door prizes.
Prosperity Landscaping operates out of Stephens City and
offers services throughout Strasburg, Stephens City, Middletown, Winchester, Front Royal,
Berryville, Martinsburg and

cooler station was designed to showcase one of

stated Settle. He also said it was
a lot of hard work preparing for
the event. The patio display complete with fire pit and sitting wall
took the crew the entire day to
assemble. This make-shift structure started with a tarp to cover
the existing grass, the gravel, the
sand and then the patio pavers.
Since this was not a permanent
structure for the town, the grass
underlay had to be left intact after the event.
As Wismer and Settle made the
plans and designed the structure,

owners, “Mike played a big role in
coordinating the project for the
event. He rounded up the guys
and got it done. He also worked

applications now being
accepted
When temperatures and humidity soar, staying cool is not a luxury, but a necessity for health, safety
and quality of life. Aid is available
to help Virginia’s low-income
families and most vulnerable individuals stay safe in sweltering
heat. Now through Monday, August 16, local departments of social services throughout the Commonwealth are accepting cooling
assistance applications as part of
the Virginia Department of Social
Services’ (VDSS) Energy Assistance Program. “We know that seasonal spikes
in utility costs can cause a signifi-
cant economic strain on vulnerable households,” said VDSS Commissioner Martin Brown. “For
many Virginians, the repair of an
air-conditioning unit or purchase
of a ceiling fan, are out of reach
without the cooling assistance
supplement.” Assistance is available to households that include a
child under age six, a disabled individual or an adult age 60 or over
who meet income and eligibility
requirements. Cooling assistance
can be used to assist families and
individuals with: payment of
electric bills up to $100 to operate cooling equipment; payment
of security deposits for electricity to operate cooling equipment;
repair of a central air conditioning
system or heat pump; purchase of
a whole-house fan, including ceiling or attic fans; and purchase and
installation of one window unit air
conditioner for households without a working one.
To qualify for cooling assistance,
the maximum gross monthly income for a one-person household
is $1,174 before taxes and $2,389
for a household of four. Assistance
is available until funds are deplet-

3 or 4 very ripe bananas

Next to the water tower on Tasker Rd.
On April 27, 2010 the Front Royal Police Department received a
report that three payroll checks had been stolen. Those three stolen checks were cashed at All Star Check Cashing on April 21,
2010 for a total of over $2000.00. The investigation revealed that
Nicole Stamps McAvoy, 30, of Winchester, Virginia cashed those
three stolen checks, forging another person’s name on each check.
McAvoy was subsequently charged with three counts of forgery,
three counts of uttering a forged document, and three counts of
obtaining money by false pretenses. Investigation also revealed
that McAvoy is a suspect in similar offenses in Frederick County. She remains free on a $2000.00 secured bond pending future
court proceedings. Anyone with additional information in relation
to this crime is asked to contact Detective Jason Winner with the
Criminal Investigations Division at 540-636-2208.

• On July 15, 1606, the great Dutch
master Rembrandt van Rijn is born in
Leiden. Rembrandt completed more
than 600 paintings, many of them portraits or self-portraits. By the age of 22,
he was accomplished enough to take
on his own students.
• On July 12, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signs into law a measure
calling for the awarding of a U.S. Army
Medal of Honor. The first U.S. Army
soldiers to receive the honor were six
members of a Union raiding party who

Georgia to destroy bridges and railroad
tracks.
• On July 14, 1881, Sheriff Pat Garrett kills Henry McCarty, known as
Billy the Kid. Garrett had been tracking the Kid for three months after the
gunslinger had escaped from prison
only days before his scheduled execution. At the trial, the judge had sentenced Billy the Kid to hang until “you
are dead, dead, dead.” Billy reportedly
responded, “And you can go to hell,

• On July 17, 1938, glory-seeking flier Douglas Corrigan takes off from
New York headed for California.
Twenty-eight hours later, Corrigan
landed his plane in Dublin, Ireland and
exclaimed, “Just got in from New York.

Way” Corrigan and his crated plane
returned to New York by ship, he was a
