Fall 2015 ALBERTA 55 PLUS FOR ACTIVE ALBERTANS Johnson.ca/deserve MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I’ve been pondering on what a wonderful organization we have here. There are so many folks who VOLUNTEER to ensure that our friends and acquaintances are afforded the opportunity to continue to be active and interactive. Heck sometimes we even get to do some of the activities ourselves! I was proud to see how well Strathmore carried off the Summer Games in July. Despite negative inputs from the weather man they managed to pull it all together to an extremely successful conclusion. The fact that such a small town, with limited existing facilities for addressing all our events, could provide such a high class event for our participants is a testament to small town creativity, spirit and volunteerism. Hats off Strathmore! Keep that model for others to follow please. Thanks also to Alberta Sport Connection for all the help these folks provide to us not only in carrying out the games themselves, but between games providing guidance and support toward our objectives. As you all know – the times they are a changing! We as an organization, and we as the active adult population of Alberta, are being called upon to look forward to how we can all come together to ensure the 55+ games can be delivered to the benefit of all who will be participating long into the future. Yes this means a change in the methodology of presenting the games. Yes this means that we can address some of the challenges we’ve had up to now in delivering portions of the games that could be labeled non-active. Yes this also means we can address how participants may be able to participate in more than one sport. Indeed this change will impact where the games can be offered, how we qualify, who can qualify, as well as a variety of other needs assessments. We will have the opportunity to address the funding model and how it best suits the needs of the participants and the hosting communities. In short we’re doing a whole scale review of the entire process. This makes us a very busy organization and over the next year we will be asking for opinions from each and every member on various issues that may directly impact you. In the interests of our future please provide your feedback in a most positive and helpful way, and with haste. We don’t have a lot of time to change our world and we do want the next games to be just as successful as others have been up to now. I want to thank all those who gave us ideas, and feedback in Strathmore. I also want to thank all you folks who are willing to help us move into the future with positivity and your own personal touch. We are a great big community – indeed I like to think of us as a family, one who has differing opinions and can work together, do some of the proverbial give and take, to make the future more gratifying for all. Let’s get out there and change our own world! Since team sports only count as one, our athletes actually took home 161 medals. This was accomplished by 97 athletes. He was originally from Toronto, but moved to the U.S. and lived in the U.S. for 5 years in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Boston. Being an avid downhill and cross country skier, Ken decided he would like to go to the Rocky Mountains. After considering Denver or Calgary he decided on Calgary and has lived (and skied) here since 1974. Ken won medals in cross-country skiing in the 2009 and 2013 Alberta 55 plus Winter Games. In addition to skiing Ken likes long distance running. He ran his first marathon of 42.2 km at the age of 70 and plans to do this every 5 years (he says tongue– in-cheek). Ken is a Real Estate Agent with Realty Executives. Ram Achal is our new Zone 3 Treasurer. An Alberta Land Surveyor (Retired). Born in Fiji. Educated in Fiji and England. We again went to being very hot and at supper time there were many sunburnt faces to be seen. I have many positions with Zone 3 and the latest is that of Mission Chef. At the meeting of all the Zone Chefs and Alberta Sport Connection we were asked to answer the question of why we had agreed to be Mission Chefs. The only answer I had for them was I do not know how to say “NO” and mean it. For all of us it was five (not four) days of looking after a myriad of problems and concerns, trying to be in more than one place at a time and meeting a lot of people. All our Zone competitors did very well. I am also the Creative Writing and Arts and Crafts Coordinator for our Zone and am proud to say my few entrants got at total of 9 medals for our Zone. We again went to being very hot and at supper time there were many sunburnt faces to be seen. The Strathmore Games committee is to be congratulated on a four day event that was well thought out and well run. All the volunteers were great. The food was exceptionally good and lots of it. They even had a special buffet set up for those with food allergies and dietary restrictions. The weather is another thing. Sitting up on those bleachers at the Agriculture Center for the Opening Ceremonies I thought we would all freeze to death and here it is the middle of summer. The next day for the start of the games, of course this is Alberta, the weather again did not cooperate and we had wind and freezing rain to deal with. As a result all the outdoor events were cancelled for that day. The Strathmore Games Committee dealt with this and scrambled to get new schedules ready for the outdoor activities for Saturday with the hope the weather would change and 11 Doug Kyle 3000 M Walk Thornview Senior Centre, 5600 Centre St. N.W., Calgary Doug Kyle 3000 M Walk Where? We had a very warm and dry summer which was good for our outdoor activities but not for the farmers and gardeners. Their crops turned out poor or failure. The Alberta 55 plus summer games held in Strathmore started out nice, but Mother Nature added some rain to give the outdoor games some problems. Yet it seems the players came home on a high note and said they all had a great time. A great thanks is given to all the participants and the volunteers who helped to make the Alberta 55 plus summer games successful in Strathmore. 2015 has been quite a year for me so far. I’ve been Zone 7 Activity Director since February. I have been an active member since 2007, participating in almost all summer and winter games as well as one national game. But now I am a member of the integral part of the operation that is needed to put together zone playoffs and zone fun events. The challenge has been intense and the learning curve steep but things are coming together with the fine help from my colleagues. Zone 7 sent 95 participants to the Summer Games in Strathmore. Nineteen of the thirtyeight towns in the zone were represented. Our athletes brought home 19 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze, for a total of 47 medals. Congratulations! I would like to thank our Zone Chef Linda Danilak, Activity Director Victor Ouellette and all the helpers who organized the pep rally and the Zone 7 play-offs. They did great job. Since January we had two provincial games, two pep rallies, five activity fun games throughout the zone and it is only mid-August. By the end of 2015 we will have four more fun days, the Awards Banquet, a fund raiser crib tournament and a few more board meetings. All in all, I thank all the members that were active in the zone playoffs and Zone 7 fun events. I appreciate your patience while I’m in the learning stage of my job. Our zone is still busy with listed activities, enough to keep our members active if weather is permitting. Zone 7 will again host a fund raising crib tournament, open to all, held in St. Paul November 14th, starting at 10 am. We also formed a committee for special events. We have chosen to do a cultural event for the community to enjoy and get involved. It would nice to hear from other zones who might have tried such an event, new or other ideas are always welcome. Have a great fall and winter. See you all down the road.
