CONGREGATION SHAARAY TEFILA SEPTEMBER 2016 WEEKLY SERVICES 68 Bay Street, Glens Falls NY 12801 FRIDAY . . . . . . .6:30PM (518) 792-4945 Fax: (518) 792-5966 SATURDAY . . . 9:30AM E-Mail: cstgfny@gmail.com AV - ELUL SUNDAY. . . . . . 8:30AM Website: www.shaaraytefila-gfny.org 5776 OFFICE HOURS: Mon. – Thurs. 8:30 AM -1:30 PM BOARD PRESIDENT: Mark Hoffman GABBI: Mike Gersten had been the one to keep them alive, to lead them forward after loss. But this time he won’t be there. So he offers the people guidance for the future. Moses says, there is always a way back. “From there, [once you have gone into Exile], you will seek Adonai your God, and you will find him; if you search for him with all your heart and all your soul.” Moses knows the human condition. We never always get everything right. We sin, we abandon God, we harm one another, and we experience Exile, distance, alienation, loss. But just as there is exile, there is also return. RABBI’S MESSAGE We are now in the seven weeks of consolation between Tisha b’Av and Rosh haShannah. The big idea of Tisha b’Av is loss, loss of the Temple, the intimate place where we met with God. At the same time, we are reading Devarim where one of the major subtexts is Moses’ deep sense of loss. The loss of his mission to enter the land together with the people. Loss is so hard that it is often a topic that we all struggle to discuss, parents with children, partners with one another. And yet, it is an ever present part of human existence. How do we handle loss? How do we return to joyful life after loss? How do we find home again? Many of us think that repentance, or return is not possible. But return is possible. Many of us think that the return depends on us getting our act together, and holding it together. That’s not true. We don’t have to get to a better place in order to become worthy of returning to God. “From there,” the Torah says, “you will seek God, and you will find him,” i.e. from that place to which we have fallen. That place where we find ourselves, “There” is precisely the place from which to rise and return to God. As the Chassidic authors loved to emphasize: לית אתר פנוי מינה, “There is no place devoid of him.” In each place where we may find ourselves, God is there. With the loss of the Temple we lost God’s permanent address. God’s home was broken into, its sacredness violated, and burned to the ground. In the Torah, Moses loses his dream. When Moses pleads to enter the land, God responds, Rav Lekha, “its too much for you” as if he’s saying, ‘its too much for you to lead the people on these marches into the Promised Land.’ Moses, old in body, cannot sustain that journey. So Moses mourns his inability to fulfill God’s plan. Some Chassidc authors base this teaching of God’s all embracing presence on a verse in parashat VaEtchanan, כי השם הוא האלהים אין עוד “ מלבדוfor Adonai he is God, and there is nothing other than him.” They hear in this verse the idea that there is literally, nothing outside of God. Wherever someone is, is a place in direct contact with God. That is one of the deepest insights of Chasidic Judaism, and one with which the Psalms brim as well, all of life can be lived in the presence of God. Even the tzurus, the pain, the narrow places, the distressing and terrible things we see and do, they do not make it impossible to return to God. How does Moses respond? He speaks to the people about what he has seen, what he has learned over the years as their leader. He is worried about them, worried they won’t remember what to do when they get off track in the future. He tells them, ‘I know you. You are not going to manage life in the future without straying from God, without following after your lusts, and straying from God’s ways. You have habits that I’ve seen and you haven’t broken them yet.’ He foretells, “when you have children and grandchildren in the land, you will grow corrupt and make a carved image, and you will do evil in the eyes of the Lord your God to anger him.” But he doesn’t just warn, he also tries again to guide, to lead. After each sin, after each time that the people gave up on God, Moses had been the one to lead them back, to lead them in repentance, to restore the relationship with God, to remind the people of God’s loving character. Moses The haftarah reading for the Shabbat that begins the seven weeks of preparation for the High Holidays speaks these words of comfort. נחמו נחמו עמי, Nachamu, nachamu Ami, “Be consoled my people.” Even before we have turned to God, before we have 1 part in the ongoing 5000 year conversation that is Judaism. Please contact me to see how we can make this work for you. made our phone calls to apologize to the people we have hurt, before we have looked at our lives and committed ourselves to struggle again against the habits that enslave us, before we have come to terms with the losses that destroy all our defenses and knock us flat to the ground, God is already right there offering comfort. Does that surprise you? It is not primarily through our own effort that we return to God. Please join us on Saturday evening, September 24 for a spirited Havdalah and Selichot service. We will be posting some of the music for this event on the Synagogue Facebook page so you can familiarize yourself with it. More active voices makes for more Ruach when it comes to Jewish prayer. When we experience loss, we need to remember the words Nachamu. When we experience loss, God wants to offer us rest and grace to escort us on our return home. And we need to remember the teaching of Moses, “from there…” From where you are right now, from there you can find God, you can turn and be comforted. Please consider calling or visiting someone who has been ill or shut in. Please also let Laurie in the office or Ellen Katz, chair of our joint SynagogueTemple Caring Committee, know of anyone who needs a call or visit so we can make sure no one “falls through the cracks.” May these weeks ahead of Rosh haShannah be a time of rest and grace, drawing us back home, back to the presence of God. I would like to thank Stephen and Bethany Slater for enriching our congregational life this summer and we all look forward to their involvement during the High Holidays and Succoth Holidays, which are just around the corner. Thanks to Sunny Buchman for getting our library back in shape and to Sunny and Nancy Goldstein for agreeing to cochair our membership committee. Thanks also to Francine Torra and Cher Hoffman for co-chairing our fundraising committee. Best, Stephen Slater PRESIDENTS MESSAGE I am writing this message a little early because Cher and I are about to embark on a 10 day selfdirected bicycle trip from Buffalo to Albany on the Erie Canal. Now that I have announced this to everyone, we can't back out. Actually, we can back out. But it would be so much more fun and adventuresome if we go ahead with our plans. Mark Hoffman SYNAGOGUE NEWS, ANNOUNCEMENTS, and IMPORTANT DATES We have found our involvement in Shaaray Tefila to be a bit like that. There are certainly times that we have asked ourselves, “What have we gotten ourselves in to?” But as the saying goes, “nothing ventured, nothing gained.” KOSHER DELIVERY The next scheduled Kosher Deliver will be on Tuesday, September 20, 2016. The last day to place your order is Monday, September 12th. Please call ahead to verify your delivery date. Call 1-800-727-5674 to place your order. I would like to invite all our members and friends to consider taking on some Jewish ventures in coming months. I know that you all have interests, talents, and years of accumulated wisdom and experience that could enrich our congregational life. Or, perhaps you would like to take on a completely new but intriguing project. We are totally open to your ideas and involvement. Best Wishes to the Following Members and Friends for a Very Happy Anniversary: Some of you participated in a recent Shabbat seminar on leading a Torah discussion led by Rabbi Slater. Although many of you may not feel up to the challenge of leading services or reading from Torah, I am convinced that there is a great reservoir of wisdom and experience that our congregants can share by helping to facilitate our Gerald & E. Action Is What Counts To look is one thing - - to see what you look at is another - - to understand what you see, is a third - - to learn from what you understand is still another - - but to act on what you learn is all that really matters. JEWISH CALENDARS Regan & Denny Funeral Home has once again provided us with wonderful calendars for the year 5777. Please stop by the Synagogue office to pick one up. If you are unable to come into the office during regular posted hours, there will be a few calendars on the table in the foyer. UNVEILING for Sylvia Kudan Please join us for the gravestone unveiling of Sylvia Kudan on Sunday, September 25, 2016 at 11 AM at our cemetery on Media Drive in Queensbury. A light luncheon reception will immediately follow at the Synagogue, 68 Bay St. in Glens Falls. All are invited. 3 ROSH HASHANAH FLORAL CENTERPIECE FUNDRAISER Appeal. Thank you very much. Your participation is greatly appreciated. Jessica Tanner, Special Events Coordinator This year our Fundraising Outreach Committee is again making Floral Centerpieces for Rosh Hashanah with fresh fall flowers and greenery in an attractive bowl. The floral centerpieces will be prepared by our volunteers and ready to be picked up or delivered (locally only) on Sunday, October 2nd, one day before Rosh Hashanah, after 1:00 PM. The cost per floral centerpiece is once again only $15.00. Please order early for your friends and family as well as yourself. Please send your pledges and dedications for the Yom Kippur Appeal into the office before Yom Kippur so that we may streamline the appeal during the services. Thank you! Fill out the enclosed form and email or drop it off to the office by the deadline, Thursday September 22nd. You can also call Laurie to place an order. Please remember that volunteers are essential to this fundraiser, call Laurie or Dolly to volunteer! The Cemetery Etiquette Reminder LULAV & ETROG SETS The fall festival of Sukkot will begin on Sunday, October 16, 2016 with Ma’ariv services beginning at 6:30 PM. The following is from minutes of the congregation board meeting on 7-11-88 and bears repeating: At Sha-cha-rit services on Monday and Tuesday mornings, beginning at 9:30 AM, we shall wave the Lulav & Etrog just before and during Hallel and during a procession around the synagogue (Ha-ka-fah). I urge everyone who would like to purchase a Lulav & Etrog set to contact Laurie at the synagogue office (792-4945) by Thursday September 29, 2016.The cost of a Lulav & Etrog set is $45.00. Please do not walk or stand on graves. There are two good reasons: A) By Jewish tradition you should respect the dead by not walking on the graves, B) The caskets are made of pinethat deteriorates over the years. The result is a large empty space about four feet below the surface. The weight of standing on a grave may cause it to cave in & you could be injured. Ralph Shapiro TZEDAKAH To make a friend - - Be One. This Yom Kippur, the regional Food bank of Northeastern New York will again be asking for your help in feeding our many hungry neighbors in the northeastern region of New York State. Please “share your bread with the hungry” – surely the neediest among us – by contributing to the 32st Annual Yom Kippur Hunger There are two people in a Synagogue - One finds it friendly and the other finds it cold - Each projects his own attitude into the other situation. Shaaray Tefila, The Center for Jewish Life is your multigenerational community where we strive to connect and create an atmosphere for the enjoyment of Jewish life and opportunities for spiritual growth. Community and connectedness means that we need YOU, each and every one of you! We need your talents, your time, your imagination, and, your financial support! Our shul depends on each of us to continue functioning daily. Other than our membership dues, by far our greatest additional support comes from the upcoming Yom Kippur appeal. Congregation Shaaray Tefila counts on the generosity of each of us. Please understand how important your contribution is, and how essential it is to our existence. Please respond generously, at whatever level you feel comfortable, so that Shaaray Tefila can continue to serve as a foundation for our community, both physically and spiritually. Please notify the office prior to Yom Kippur of your pledge and dedications so we may omit the soliciting of pledges during the service. Thank you for your continued support of your Synagogue. Below is a Yom Kippur Appeal Pledge card for your convenience. Please tear along the dotted line and return it to the Synagogue. Thank you. ................................................................................
