TOO SEXY PRODUCTION MANUAL
This manual will take you through the steps of producing your own Too Sexy piece of
furniture.
There is a stool, a coffee table and a children’s chair to choose from. But you are of course
free to make them all.
For all three pieces you need the same material: corrugated cardboard. It’s a beautiful
material that combines strength with being light weight. And it can be found in abundance
for free as waste at the side of the street. You need double wave corrugated cardboard that
has a thickness of 7 mm. This is the type they use for bigger boxes that need to hold heavy
stuff. The boxes they use for packaging new bikes for instance are perfect. So you could ask
your local bike shop to set away a few for you and pick them up at your convenience.
The thickness of 7 mm is quite crucial, since it will make sure the different parts will slot
together nice and snug and your piece of furniture will be strong and stable.
Here’s a close up of the cardboard you are looking for:
STEP BY STEP
STEP 1:
download the laser cutter files from the website
http://www.davidgraas.com/1971919-i-m-too-sexy-for-the-sidewalk#1
STEP 2:
forward the files to a local laser cutter to get a price quote. Just google for “laser
cutting” to find a service that is located close to where you are. Not every laser
cutter has experience with cutting corrugated cardboard, so it is a good idea to
check beforehand if they offer cutting this specific material.
Alternatively you can try your luck at the growing amount of Makerspaces and LIY
(Laser It Yourself).
STEP 3:
collect the cardboard. Just keep your eyes on the sidewalk and pick up this
material for free. Look for big boxes. The bigger the better, since you will be
cutting large sheets from them later on.
STEP 4:
-
Cut the sheets.
For the Too Sexy stool you need five sheets measuring 750 x 600 mm
For the Too Sexy coffee table you need eleven sheets measuring 950 x 650 mm
For the Too Sexy children’s chair you need four sheets measuring 700 x 600 mm
ATTENTION: the direction of the cardboard wave is very important for the eventual strength
of the furniture piece. When the sheet is standing on its larger side, the wave should run
vertically, like this:
In other words, the wave should be visible on the larger side, like this:
STEP 5:
Take the sheets to your local laser cutter.
STEP 6:
After laser cutting is completed, collect the sheets holding the laser cut parts and
assemble the furniture piece.
