NASA subcontractor Intrinsyx uses
Zentyal as a firewall
Deploying a secure and reliable Firewall system is vital in
Intrinsyx's line of business. That is the reason they chose Zentyal's
solutions for managing their client's network traffic and data
system infrastructures.
The challenge
The solution
When it comes to server solutions,
Intrinsyx aims at using Ubuntu-based
solutions in order to guarantee their
customers solid network and data system
infrastructures.
Zentyal was deployed at Building 19 of the
NASA Ames Research Park to act as a
Gateway and Firewall, with a single static
external IP and serving several domains
with a mixture of backend servers. The
hardware chosen was a modest Sony
VGC-RA830G tower, fitted with an Intel
EXPI9402PT dual gigabit port PCIe x4 card,
replacing its x16 nvidia 6600 with a spare
PCI 5200. On the software side, Zentyal
was configured with the following active
modules: Network, Firewall, DHCP, DNS,
Events, Logs, NTP, VPN, Users and Groups,
File Sharing, HTTP Proxy and User Corner.
Up until 2009, Intrinsyx had used Red
Hat-based Endian Firewall to control their
customers' network traffic. However, given
the continuous failures they were
experiencing, Intrinsyx started an
extensive search for a new, preferably
Ubuntu-based solution and shortly they
came across Zentyal.
Following a comprehensive evaluation and
testing period, Intrinsyx moved Zentyal to
production environments and have not
experienced any significant problems
since then, due to the customization ability
of the underlying Ubuntu Server platform
and the transparent nature of the Zentyal
on top.
“ Zentyal allows Intrinsyx
to leverage the Debian
Code of Conduct to
expose one of the easiest
to use web interfaces,
sanely setting up very
complex services like
LDAP, Email, and VoIP
with a few clicks of the
mouse. It does not
prevent you from
installing packages like
vsftpd or kvm, and the
upgrade to 1.4 was
painless and quick! ”
When moving to Zentyal1.4, Intrinsyx also
retired their old standa- lone HP 1.2Ghz
VoIP server running PBX in a
Flash/FreePBX: Zentyal's Asterisk solution
suited them much better, tying central
authentication accounts to the voicemail.
Apart from the benefit of converging the
technology with the bulk of Intrinsyx
Ubuntu-based deployments, the stability
of the solution has been greatly improved,
enjoying a solid problem-free network
since the switch.
