Welcome to the Reviewer/Evaluator’s Guide for the new HP Color LaserJet 5550 series printer.
This guide will introduce you to the printer and help you to conduct a successful evaluation.

Evaluation guidelines
As you design tests and conduct your evaluation, remember the following guidelines:

HP Smart printing supplies and technology7

HP Smart printing supplies ensure consistent, top-quality output over the life of each print
cartridge, and from cartridge to cartridge. The chemically-grown toner has small particles that
are more uniform and spherical than traditionally manufactured toners. The toner size results in
fine detail on printed images, bright saturated colors, and a good ability to match the screen
(sRGB color).

The printer features a front door that offers a single point of access to replace HP printing
supplies and clear media jams. Clearly labeled parts, easy-to-understand instructions, and
individual cartridge status information from the control panel or the HP Embedded Web Server
make supplies management and troubleshooting easy for all users.

The simple paper path, easy-to-use supplies, and all-in-one HP print cartridges result in fewer

The control panel displays up to four lines of text and animated graphics simultaneously and
provides complete, timely information about the printer and print jobs. The graphics illustrate print
cartridge levels, paper jam locations, and job status. Menus give you access to printer functions
and detailed information. The message and prompt areas alert you to the state of the printer and
tell you what action, if any, is required.

Provides one location for users to access all printer information, including documentation, selfhelp and troubleshooting tips, printer status, and links to HP Instant Support and the

Server
Allows you to view printer and network status and to manage printing functions from your
computer instead of from the printer control panel; enables proactive one-on-one printer
management. This tool can be used when the printer is connected to a network via an
HP Jetdirect print server.
HP Web Jetadmin
HP Web Jetadmin provides network managers a single support tool to install, monitor, and
troubleshoot a wide range of network-connected devices from an intuitive browser interface.
While the HP Embedded Web Server is used to manage a single printer, HP Web Jetadmin is
used to manage groups of printers and other devices. This tool can be used when the printer is
connected to a network via an HP Jetdirect print server.
HP Instant Support
Connects you to the HP Web site to help you solve problems and answer questions. This service
analyzes your printer error log and configuration information to provide diagnostic and support
information specific to your printer.
HP SureSupplyTM
Lets you conveniently and easily order supplies over the Internet. Enabled by HP Smart printing
technology, SureSupply helps you track and manage supplies usage, and provides alerts when
supplies should be reordered or replaced. With just a few clicks, access cartridge information,

Evaluation
Setting up the printer
Have a representative end-user unbox and set up the printer, using the printer documentation as a
guide. Consider the following:

How does the overall printer design contribute to ease of use?

How well is the user able to install and interact with supplies and accessories?
Testing printer software
1. Install the drivers and other printer software and then print some test pages. Document any
driver or software changes performed during testing.
2. Note which platforms and printer languages the drivers support.
3. Install and test all supported printer languages as time permits.

HP ImageREt 3600
HP ImageREt 3600 is a suite of innovative technologies developed by HP to provide professional,
high-quality color documents and images. The system’s foundation is comprised of key color laser
technologies, including image enhancements, HP Smart printing supplies, and high-resolution
imaging. As the level or category of HP ImageREt increases, these core technologies are refined for
more advanced system usage, and additional technologies are integrated.
HP ImageREt 3600 includes system optimization for printing images on HP Glossy Photo & Imaging
Laser Paper, improved calibration, and an environmental sensor, and is implemented for the first
time with the HP Color LaserJet 5550 series printer. HP ImageREt 3600 optimizes the printer for
office use with advanced image enhancements for general office documents and marketing
collateral.
With HP ImageREt 3600, the printer is designed and configured to automatically produce the best
possible output for all your printed documents. What took hours to do by hand is now done
instantly inside the printer. Automatic internal color adjustment provides consistent color over a
range of environments. Press options are: SWOP, Euroscale, and DIC. HP has the expertise built
into the printer so conversions from standard RGB (sRGB) or CMYK to the device colors is always
optimal.
Printing system optimization for HP Glossy Photo & Imaging Laser Paper
For the best image quality with the HP Color LaserJet 5550 series printer, use HP Glossy Photo &
Imaging Laser Paper and select HP High Gloss (Images) in the print driver’s media types section.
Selecting HP High Gloss (Images) enables the printer’s image mode, which is optimized for image
printing. In image mode, the printer uses unique color rendering tables that increase the richness
and depth of the printed images. The glossiness of the output is increased by slowing down the
printer speed, which allows longer fusing time and contributes to the richness of the resulting
image.

Reliable printing in a variety of environmental conditions
The printer delivers uncompromised print quality in a variety of environmental conditions. The
printer features temperature and humidity sensors used to precisely control printing conditions. For
example, the printer is less sensitive to adverse printing environments, such as offices where heating
or air-conditioning is reduced during evening hours.
Improved automatic color calibration
HP continues to refine and improve color calibration. The HP Color LaserJet 5550 uses new
measurement algorithms and methods to achieve even better color stability and repeatability.
A new time-saving feature skips calibration when appropriate, allowing the printer to be available
more quickly. If the fuser is powered off and on quickly (within 20 seconds), calibration is not
needed and will be skipped.
Automatic color calibration and cleaning results in excellent color uniformity and ensures that print
quality will be consistent over time.
Advanced toner formula
The chemically grown toner has small particles that are more uniform and spherical than traditional
manufactured toners. The toner size results in fine detail on printed images, bright saturated colors,
and a good ability to match the screen (sRGB color).
HP Smart printing supplies8
HP Smart printing supplies include technology that adjusts the electrophotographic voltages of the
print cartridges throughout the stages of their life. As the properties of the organic photoconductor
drum and toner change over time, adjustments are made for minor fluctuations in sensitivity. These
adjustments ensure even, consistent distribution of toner particles.
Vertical in-line architecture
Because the toner is applied directly to the media rather than via an intermediate transfer belt or
drum, text quality is sharper.
Edge enhancements
The edge enhancements available with the HP Color LaserJet 5550 series printer provide precise
edge control, delivering excellent print quality. Edge control has three components: Color REt,
adaptive halftoning, and trapping. These features are designed into the printer through HP
proprietary technologies and do not affect printing speed.
ColorREt
Color REt is a new feature that smoothes edges by intelligently changing the size and position of
the dots that make up the edge of a solid object. It is optimized to work on solid color edges: red,
blue, green, black, and other solid colors. This ability to grow and move dots increases the
apparent resolution well above 600 dpi.

Adaptive, accurate halftoning
Adaptive halftoning increases the edge smoothness of text and graphics while maintaining the
quality of filled areas. Adaptive halftoning provides a solution to the requirement for smooth color
and accurate, crisp edges by locating and increasing the digital halftone frequency at edges. The
HP Color LaserJet 5550’s series printer’s engine consistency and reliability combined with smooth
printing allows higher halftone frequencies that produce accurate halftones.
Trapping
To generate a color image, four color planes must be printed: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.
Trapping is the deliberate overlapping of one color to an adjacent color to reduce the effect of
color plane misregistration.
Included in the trapping component is halo reduction. Halo reduction makes the subordinate colors
recede from the edge of the dominant color. For example, a process black line would be made up
of black, the dominant color, and cyan and magenta, the subordinate colors. The cyan and
magenta near the edge of the black line are reduced or removed. This prevents color from being
seen on the edge of the black line.
Color matching
The process of matching printer output color to your computer screen is quite complex because
printers and computer monitors use different methods of producing color. Monitors display colors
by light pixels using an RGB (red, green, blue) color process, but printers print colors using a
CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) process.
Several factors can influence your ability to match printed colors to those on your monitor. These
factors include:

Keep the above factors in mind when colors on your screen do not perfectly match your printed
colors. For most users, the best method for matching colors on your screen to your printer is to print
sRGB colors.
sRGB
Standard red-green-blue (sRGB) is an industry color standard originally developed by HP and
Microsoft® as a common color language for monitors, input devices (scanners, digital cameras),
and output devices (printers, plotters). It is the default color space used for HP printers, Microsoft
operating systems, the World Wide Web, and most office software sold today. sRGB is
representative of the typical Windows computer monitor today and the convergence standard for
high-definition television.

applications use sRGB to communicate color. Most importantly, as the default color space in
Microsoft operating systems, sRGB has gained broad adoption as a means to exchange color
information between applications and devices using a common definition that assures typical users
will experience greatly improved color matching. sRGB improves your ability to match colors

between the printer, the computer monitor, and other input devices (such as scanners and digital
cameras) automatically, without the need to become a color expert.
PANTONE®* color matching
PANTONE®* has multiple color matching systems. PANTONE®* Matching System is very popular
and uses solid inks to generate a wide range of color hues and tints. After product introduction, see
www.hp.com/support/clj5550 for details on how to use PANTONE®* Matching System with this
printer.
Swatch book color matching
The process for matching printer output to preprinted swatch books and standard color references
is complex. In general, you can obtain a reasonably good match to a swatch book if the inks used
to create the swatch book are cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. These are usually referred to as
process color swatch books.
Some swatch books are created from spot colors. Spot colors are specially created colorants. Many
of these spot colors are outside of the gamut of the printer. Most spot color swatch books have
companion process swatch books that provide CMYK approximations to the spot color.
Most process swatch books will have a note on what process standards were used to print the
swatch book. In most cases, they will be SWOP, EURO, or DIC. To get optimal color matching to
the process swatch book, select the corresponding ink emulation from the printer menu. If you
cannot identify the process standard, use SWOP ink emulation.
Neutral gray treatment
This feature allows you to select the neutral gray treatment of either black-only or 4-color process
grays. Black-only can be selected to print black text, keeping the lines sharp and reducing the
impact of color plane misregistration. (No cyan, magenta, or yellow toners are combined to form
gray.) If 4-color grays are selected, black is printed using all four process colors (cyan, magenta,
yellow, and black), known as process grays. This selection is useful for printing photographs, since
it produces richer grays and blacks that blend smoothly with surrounding colors. This feature,
combined with Trapping, provides greater flexibility and quality.

Evaluation
Print quality is more than the number of dots per inch (dpi) that the printer places on a page; a
higher dpi does not always mean better print quality. Print quality is affected by many factors, such
as color capability, text quality, solid colors, and edge enhancements. This section offers some
practical advice for conducting your own print quality evaluation.
Creating samples
When evaluating print quality, test a group of sample documents that represent what the end-user
will print on the printer. It is important to test files like those that are printed in your workplace.
Most print quality files or print samples included with a product have been optimized for that
product and may not reflect the type of output you will receive.
Your samples should include multiple documents and file types, each created in the applications
that will be used by the end-user. The samples should have different elements (text, graphics, and
photographic images) and should vary in complexity and page length.
Some suggested content includes simple text documents, mixed text and graphics, and complex
graphics containing photographic images.

Using only one application or file can skew test results. Use several types of files
and applications to present a broad and realistic performance picture.

For most printers, paper quality and type can dramatically affect print quality. However, the
HP Color LaserJet 5550 series printer provides excellent results on both plain paper and
special media. When comparing the print quality of different printers, you may want to
evaluate the output on different types of media.

Plain papers vary among brands and the regions in which they are manufactured. Some plain
papers have a preferred print side. You should also take into account storage conditions as
well as how the papers handle toner.

Temperature and humidity should be kept constant for each printer tested. These factors may
affect toner-media interactions and can have an impact on final print quality.
Print viewing conditions
Ideally, quality should be evaluated under a mix of fluorescent and incandescent lighting. Quality
should not be evaluated too close to windows, as natural light changes dramatically with
variations in weather and the time of day.
In addition, the color of the surrounding can significantly affect quality perception. White
surroundings may call undue attention to the color of the media. Medium or light gray is usually
the best choice for the area surrounding where the sample documents will be evaluated.
Individuals may perceive quality differently. HP suggests that you have several people evaluate
your sample documents, in the same environment, with a consistent light source. Have them vote
on the samples that they like by listing them in order from the best to the worst. Allow each person
to rate the samples independently and then record the results. Also, have each person establish a
cut line for acceptable quality for the end-user environment.
Note
This process is referred to as psychometric testing and should be performed on all of the
sample documents that you are using to evaluate text, graphics, and image quality.
Evaluating print quality
When you evaluate the overall quality of an output, avoid magnification. Under magnification,
insignificant differences become huge. However, a detailed inspection is still necessary, and when
doing this, look for the following characteristics:
Text print quality

Text should be dark, not faded.
•
Text should be solid black, without hollow spots.
•
Edges should be crisp and smooth, not jagged, or with stair-stepping.
•
Portrait and landscape text should have the same print quality.
•
Toner should not blur or bleed.
Graphics quality

Edges of colored shapes and graphics should be well formed and smooth.
•
Solid color fills should be uniform.
•
There should be no bands across graphics.
•
Areas of solid black should not bleed into areas of solid colors.
•
Areas of solid toner should not wick into the paper fibers.

Printer performance is more than just a measure of pages per minute. Rather, printer performance is
the speed at which a printer can turn electronic files into printed pages. In addition to engine
speed, several factors affect the time it takes to print a job, including the use of special media,
computer download time, and printer processing time. The time it takes for your computer to
download a job to the printer, and for the printer to process the job, depends on the following
variables:

printer’s performance due to increased data transmission. They often require the user to install more
memory and may increase network traffic. But HP’s innovative technologies, including HP ImageREt

To optimize performance, the HP Color LaserJet 5550 series printer features an inductive heat fuser

Convenient job retention features
There are four job retention features: Quick Copy, Proof and Hold, Private Printing, and Stored Job.
All features are available with the HP high-performance EIO hard disk, standard with the HP Color
LaserJet 5550hdn printer. The Proof and Hold and Private Printing features are available with the
HP Color LaserJet 5550dtn printer or by adding RAM to the other printer models, for a total of at
least 160 MB. For information on ordering the hard disk or memory, see Appendix C, “Accessories

Quick Copy
Prints the requested number of copies of a job and stores a copy of the job on the printer’s hard
disk. Additional copies of the job can be printed later, directly from the printer’s control panel.
Proof and Hold
Provides a quick and easy way to print one copy and proof it before printing the remaining
copies. You can either continue printing the remaining copies, which have been saved at the
printer, or cancel them from the printer’s control panel. After the additional copies are printed, the
Proof and Hold job is deleted from the printer. This reduces network traffic, paper waste, and
supplies costs.
Private Printing
Protect confidential documents with the Private Printing feature. This feature lets you specify that a
job will not be printed until you release it using a 4-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN)
through the printer’s control panel. When you enter the PIN in the driver, it is sent to the printer as
part of the print job.
Stored Job
Allows you to download a print job to the printer’s optional hard disk without printing it. You can
then print the job at any time from the printer’s control panel. For example, you may want to
download a personnel form, calendar, time sheet, or accounting form that other users can access
and print. To store a print job permanently on the optional hard disk, select the Stored Job option
in the driver when printing the job.

Evaluation
This section offers guidelines for conducting your own printer performance evaluation. It is
important to test files like those that are printed in your workplace. Most print samples included
with a printer have been optimized for that printer and may not reflect the type of output you will
receive.
When evaluating printer performance, test a group of sample documents that represent what the
end-user will print on the printer. Your samples should include multiple documents and file types,
each created in the applications that will be used by the end-user. You might want to use the print
samples that you created for evaluating print quality (see “Creating samples“ on page 15).
Evaluation guidelines
Before you print the sample documents, make sure that your test environment simulates the enduser’s and that you make a fair comparison between printers. Follow the guidelines below:
Measure how a printer will perform from the end-user’s perspective.
•
Print from computer systems that closely match the typical end-user’s machine.
•
Test multiple media sizes and types.
•
Test print features (handout printing, booklets, duplexing, etc.).
•
Test and compare default settings. (What settings will end-users use most often?)
When evaluating more than one printer’s performance, it is crucial that you make a fair
comparison between printers.
•
Print the same files on all printers, using the same or equivalent print mode settings.
•
Use more than one software application to make sure software/driver conflicts are not
affecting print quality.
•
Use the same type of paper for each test.
•
Use the same operating system, software application, printer language, and manufacturer’s
print driver to test all printers. (Each of these components interacts with the printing process
and can affect print performance.)
•
If printers are networked, use the same client and isolated or controlled network to provide a
controlled and repeatable environment. Network traffic can affect performance; therefore,
when comparing relative performance of printers, an isolated network should be used so that
network traffic is the same when testing all printers. You can use a sniffer on your network to
record the amount of network traffic being generated. To make a valid comparison, be sure
that the amount of traffic on the network is consistent when testing each printer.

What to measure
Different testing methods can be employed to gauge the performance of the HP Color LaserJet
5550 series printer. The following types of tests are commonly used.
Click-to-drop—The total print time, from the time the print command is issued, to completion of
printing.
Return-to-application—The time from initiating the print command to the time when the computer is
available for other tasks.
Pick-to-drop—The print time, from the instant the first piece of media is picked up by the printer, to
completion of printing.
Printer warm-up+calibration—The time from turning the printer on to the time when the printer
enters the Ready state. (This time usually includes warming-up the printer, calibration, and booting
up the printer firmware.)
First page out—The time from initiating the print command to the completion of the first page.
Measure this from a variety of engine conditions (Ready, PowerSave, Off).
Running the tests
Follow the guidelines below when measuring printer performance:

Be sure to measure the amount of time it takes to print a complete document. (For example,
you might print a 20-page duplexed document, with a cover page printed on heavier paper.)
•
Perform each test three times to obtain an average. If the variances in the three tests are too
much, discard the results, check the system, and redo the tests.
•
If the printer offers more than one I/O port, perform tests using each port. Although results may
vary depending on the system configuration, printing using a USB port is typically faster than
with a parallel port.
•
When comparing the performance of printers, look beyond the speed trial data and consider
the acceptability of the output. There are definitely tradeoffs in print quality, but as you review
your results, look at the samples and consider whether the quality meets your standards.

Troubleshooting tab
The Troubleshooting tab provides links to printer troubleshooting information, such as how to clear
a paper jam, how to resolve print quality problems, how to resolve other internal problems with the
printer, and how to print some printer pages.

The Alerts tab allows you to configure the printer to automatically notify you of printer alerts, with

Set up status alerts
Choose to turn alerts on or off, specify when the printer should send an alert, and choose from
two different types of alerts:

Click Apply to activate the settings.
Administrative settings
Determine how often toolbox checks for printer alerts. Three settings are available:

Once per minute (every 60 seconds)
•
Twice per minute (every 30 seconds)

If you want to reduce network I/O traffic, reduce the frequency that the printer checks for alerts.

HP Embedded Web Server
The HP Embedded Web Server provides a universal interface to the printer that anyone with a
network-connected PC and a standard Web browser can easily access. It requires no special
software to install or configure. The HP Embedded Web Server allows you to display status
information, change settings, and manage the printer from your computer.
The HP Embedded Web Server requires a connection to the network via an HP Jetdirect print
server. HP Color LaserJet 5550n, 5550dn, 5550dtn, and 5550hdn printers come standard with
the HP Jetdirect 620n Fast Ethernet print server. To use the HP Embedded Web Server, you need
the following:
•
A TCP/IP-based network
•
A Web browser installed on your computer; either Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or later or
Netscape Navigator 6.2 or later
Note
You can gain access to the HP Embedded Web Server from any operating system that
supports the TCP/IP protocol and a Web browser. Parallel cable connections and IPXbased network connections are not supported. You cannot view the HP Embedded Web
Server pages from outside a firewall.
You do not have to have Internet access to open and use the HP Embedded Web Server.
For more information, see the HP Embedded Web Server User Guide located on the
printing systems software CD included with the printer.
Using the HP Embedded Web Server
When the printer is connected to the network, the HP Embedded Web Server is automatically
available. You may access the HP Embedded Web Server from Windows 98 and later. The
HP Embedded Web Server allows you to view printer and network status and to manage printing
functions from your computer instead of from the printer control panel. Below are examples of what
you can do using the HP Embedded Web Server:

View printer control status information

Set the type of paper loaded in each tray

Determine the remaining life on all supplies and order new supplies online via the Internet

View and change tray configurations

Accessing the HP Embedded Web Server
You can access the HP Embedded Web Server in the following ways:

In a supported Web browser on your computer, type the IP address assigned to the device. For
example:, if the device’s IP address is 123.456.789.123, you would type
“http://123.456.789.123” into your Web browser’s Address or Go to field. (The device IP
address is listed on the Jetdirect Configuration page.)

The Information tab provides access to the following pages:
Device Status
Displays the printer status and shows the remaining life of HP supplies in percentages. The page

Shows the information found on the printer configuration page.
Supplies Status
Shows the life remaining of HP supplies in percentages. This page also provides supplies part
numbers. To order new supplies, click Order Supplies in the Other Links area on the left side of
the window. To visit any Web site, you must have Internet access.
Event Log
Lists all printer events and errors.
Usage Page
Summarizes the number of pages the printer has printed, grouped by size and type.
Device Information
Displays the printer network name, address, and model information. To alter these entries, click
Device Information from the Settings tab.
Control Panel
This page shows an image of the text currently appearing on the printer’s control panel display.
Print
Print print-ready files from any product that supports the HP Embedded Web Server. This feature is
especially useful to mobile users, because you do not have to install a product’s print driver in
order to print—you can print anywhere at any time.
Settings tab
The Settings tab allows you to configure the printer from your computer. It can be protected by a
password. If the printer is networked, always consult with the printer administrator before changing
settings.
The Settings tab contains the following pages.
Configure Device
Configure all printer settings from this page. This page contains the traditional menus found on
printers using a control panel display. These menus include Information, Paper Handling, and
Configure Device.
Alerts
For network connected printers only. Set up to receive e-mail alerts for various printer and supplies
events. Alerts may also be sent to a URL.
E-mail
For network connected printers only. Used in conjunction with the Alerts page to set up incoming
and outgoing e-mail, as well as to set e-mail alerts.
Security
Set a password that must be entered to gain access to the Settings and Networking tabs. Enable
and disable certain features of the HP Embedded Web Server.
Other Links
Add or customize a link to another Web site to be displayed in the Other Links area on all
HP Embedded Web Server pages. The following links always appear in the Other Links area:
HP Instant Support, Order Supplies, and Product Support.
Device Information
Name the printer and assign an asset number to it. Enter the name and e-mail address for the
primary contact who will receive information about the printer.
Language
Determine the language in which to display the HP Embedded Web Server information.
Time Services
Configure the printer’s time settings.

Networking tab
The Networking tab allows network administrators to control network-related settings for the printer
when it is connected to an IP-based network. This tab will not appear if the printer is directly
connected to a computer, or if the printer is connected to a network using anything other than an
HP Jetdirect print server.
Other links
This section contains links that connect you to the Internet to order supplies or obtain product
support. You must have Internet access to use any of these links. If you use a dial-up connection and
did not connect when you first opened the HP Embedded Web Server, you must connect before
you can visit these sites. Connecting may require that you close the HP Embedded Web Server and
reopen it.
HP Instant Support
Connects you to the HP Web site to help you find solutions. This service analyzes your printer error
log and configuration information to provide diagnostic and support information specific to your
printer.
Order Supplies
Click this link to connect to the HP Web site and order genuine HP print cartridges.
Product Support
Connects to the support site for the HP Color LaserJet 5550 series printer. Then, you can search for
help regarding general topics.
HP Web Jetadmin
HP’s Web Jetadmin utility gives network managers a single support tool to install, monitor, and
troubleshoot a wide range of network-connected devices from an intuitive browser interface.
HP Web Jetadmin supports the broadest range of printers and server platforms in the industry,

When there is a firmware or driver update for your printer available on the HP Web site, there will
