A new chapter for the club and I’m delighted we
are hosting one of the oldest and most historic
teams in rugby league. Hunslet Hawks was formed
in 1895 and they’re one of the original breakaway
clubs from Union. To have them, a heartland
rugby league team as opponents at our first game
is fantastic. A very warm welcome to Hunslet, to
their players, officials and supporters.
Amongst all the rigors of the Cavaliers matches,
I’m delighted to announce that Will Brewer
is taking up the role of Commercial and
Sponsorship Manager for the club. To have a
dedicated individual looking for opportunities
to create healthy partnerships with the business
community and the club is great news. His

and in my opinion a much
needed move which helps us

of the season, after being tipped to mount a
serious promotion challenge. That promotion
challenge is certainly not beyond them and they
will be looking to take two points today and
push towards mid table. For us the challenge is
more about ourselves than our opposition - we
need to get our own house in order in terms of
completion rates and defensive lapses. I have
every confidence that we have the players to
get the points from these games but it is vital
for us that we all play to the maximum of our
abilities for the full 80 minutes, week in week

early form was very promising after beating

Newcastle. However we have shown signs of Tim
our youth & inexperience in both our Challenge
Cup exit and recent games at Keighley. It’s that
area where we need to significantly improve in
order to compete at this level.
Today will be another big challenge against
a team who have come down from the
Championship this season. Hunslet have a
great deal of quality among their squad and
it’s somewhat a surprise to see them down
near the bottom of the league at this stage
GETTING TO KNOW THE BLUES
JOEL
THOMAS
Joel is a prop joining from Gloucester All Golds
and lives in the Jericho area of Oxford. He gained
experience from playing in France with the Catalan
Dragons reserves and the All Golds last season.
He came close to signing last season and is a
welcome addition to the Blues forwards. He’s
been recovering from an ankle injury during
preseason but all seems well as Joel aims to claim
a first team spot. Joel is a mobile and aggressive
running forward who adds size to the pack as well.
Thomas commented“I’m pleased and excited to be
with Oxford. All the lads have been very welcoming
and the spirit in the squad is upbeat. I’m eager to get
stuck in and just want to do my best for the team.”
JJ
BAIRD
Not a new face but a welcome return to
one of the Oxford originals with John
James Baird or JJ as he’s known. JJ is an Irish
Wolfhound and played two seasons with the
Blues before injury hit in the 2014 season.
He has spent the best part of a year and a half
recovering and slowly but surely he has reached
and conquered his goal. He began life in the
centres but evolved into a versatile back rower
who plays with passion and energy. He is a
committed player who demands much of himself
and to get back to selection contention, is both an
example to others and credit to his self-discipline.
Games with the reserves have helped JJ
and he had this to say “It’s been a long road
of recovery, frustration doesn’t begin to
describe it but hopefully it’s behind me and
I’m grateful for the faith and belief the club,
the staff and my team mates are showing.”

GETTING TO KNOW HUNSLET
HUNSLET
HAWKS
Hunslet have 131 years of history and Oxford have 3 and a half! That kind of puts
a perspective on the experience and heritage of today’s visitors to Tilsley Park.
Hunslet is located just south of Leeds city centre and in May of 1883 two of the local teams, Albion
and Excelsior, were granted the sum of £30 to form the Hunslet Rugby Club. At the end of that year
the Imperial side joined the Hunslet club. Hunslet announced their arrival the following season by
beating Leeds St Johns (who are known today as Leeds Rhinos) in the 3rd round of the Yorkshire Cup.
A serious rugby league club was born and Hunslet have gone on to create a rich and glorious
history which can be read by following this link http://www.hunslethawks.co.uk/info/club-history
In recent history, since 2009 the Hawks have been a dominant team in and around League 1 and the
Championship. In Oxford’s short time in the professional game Hunslet have featured in the same
division and enjoyed victories over the Blues and gone on to win the Kingstone Press league 1 in 2014.
2015 saw them play in the

ONE’S TO WATCH
JACK
LEE
Jack joined the club from York City Knights
on a 2 year contract in 2015. Lee, 27, was the
coaches’ player of the year in 2013 and was
their leading try scorer, scoring 18 tries in 25
appearances. The City Knights captain joined
them in 2010 from Featherstone Rovers and he
was in inspirational form in 2014 culminating
in him being awarded the Championship 1
player of the year. His signing is a real coup for
the club and he was Hunslet’s leading try scorer
in 2015 with 13 tries from 26 appearances.
RICHIE
BARNETT
Richie is a 34 year old winger with power and
pace who rejoined Hunslet in 2015 scoring
6 tries in 25 appearances after 2 years at
Keighley Cougars. The winger has Super
League experience with Hull FC, Warrington
Wolves and Salford City Reds. He joined
Sheffield Eagles before moving to the Hawks
in 2011. He was then snapped up by Keighley
Cougars in 2012 and has made a total of 60
appearances for the Cougars scoring 30 tries.

GREAT FOUNDATIONS!
RUGBY LEAGUE INSPIRES
FOUNDATION UPDATE
Whilst Oxford RL have only just started their
season, the Foundation has been in full flow since
the start of the academic year and I thought I
would take this opportunity to go into some of the
activities which have been going on in the county.
Our School Delivery has been growing rapidly
through the Sky Try programme, with the community
team reaching over 15 primary schools and 4
secondary schools since September and around
500 kids taking part in the programme each
week. The programme which Sky and the RFL
have put in place is fantastic and it’s great to see
so many schools taking part with further schools
coming on board over the next few months.
The Oxford Cavaliers senior section (the amateur
side in the county) started back at pre season
training in preparation for the start of their West of
England campaign which begins on the 7th May.
Training will be at Harcourt Hill Campus, Oxford
Brookes University on Wednesday evenings from
6:30-8pm. New players of all abilities are welcome
so if you have fancied playing rugby league
then it would be great to see you there. If you
would like any more details then please contact
me at ryan@oxfordrl.com or on 07970 393784.
Whilst on the subject of the Cavaliers, the Junior sides
have been in full flow with their pre season training
with the club looking at running sides at u12’s, u13’s
and u14’s this season. The club are always on the
lookout for new players so if your son or daughter
would like to play rugby league throughout the
summer then get in touch with John Connaughton on
07809 257706 or john_connaughton@hotmail.com
If you would like any further information about the
Foundation then do not hesitate to contact me on
the above details or grab me at one of the games.
Yours in rugby league
Ryan
