The world of air transport
Week at a glance: Pre-nursery children have been exploring the world of water. Children
could identify boats and further details on types of boats—rowing boat, sailing boat, tug
boat, fisherman’s boat was discussed. They were able to understand the function of each
of these boats—how oars are used for rowing, the sail in the sailing boat helps to push the
boat ahead, tug boats are used for pulling barge and large ships to the harbor. The children also reasoned the use of boats for fishermen to catch fish. They also discussed about
the professionals who work at water fronts– the sailor and the fishermen.
A further inquiry into ships and submarines was also undertaken. The children also hat
ships are used for carrying people and cargo. They made comparisons with the railways
system—freight trains and passenger trains. We also discussed how submarines are used
by fighters and soldiers not for passengers. Audio video was shown to talk about dock,
port, anchor, light house, safety tube and jacket. They were also excited to see video of
submarines how they surface to the water and go underwater. Children created various
boats for their class using various mediums for art.
Numeracy was integrated with the ongoing unit. Science concept of floating and sinking
was undertaken. The children explored with a variety of materials how some materials go
down (sinking) in the water and some float. The key target was that children need to predict whether the objects float or sink in water and then practically see the results. Most of
their predictions turned out correct! This was spontaneous experiment that turned out to
be a great learning experience.
Children enjoyed listening to the book “Boats” by Anne Rock-well. They looked at the various boats ie row boat, sail boat, paddle boat and speed boats. They saw how boats can be
different, in size, speed, or method of movement.

Learning engagements of the week
Language development:
The children have been introduced to the phonic
sound of /P/ through a variety of medium such
as audio-visual cues, songs, finger phonics and
pictures. They explored writing the letter using
crayons and through tracing. The children enjoyed listening to the story of “Noisy Pig” as they
explored the sound of the letter P.
In continuation with the theme, the children
were read books related to the theme. The children were also shown the book “Busy Busy Town” by Richard Scarry to study the scene at a
harbor. A recap of the various letters of alphabet that have been introduced so far was discussed.
Pretend play: The children partook in role play of sitting in a pretend boat with oars. They were
asked to estimate how many children can sit in the boat? Various numbers were quoted and we
experimented by making them sit. The children later evaluated that only 2 people can sit in a
boat.
The children made an estimate and then realised that more than 2 children could not sit
comfortably in the boat. They also realized that if we fill the boat too much then it could
sink in the water.

Learning engagements
Rowing boats: The children used their pincer finger to colour their boat.
Sailing boats: They explored the triangle shape in the sailing boat and stuck cutouts of
the same. Later, using bubble wraps they have created imprints to represent water in the
sheet.

Learning engagements
Predicting what will go down
or stay up.
Children explored the concept
using rubber ducks and pebbles.
New vocabulary introduced
was floating and sinking.
While exploring the water tub,
they also saw how their reflections can be seen in the water.
This was a new learning for
them.
Children were given more
items– like wooden blocks, silver foil boats, and other toys to
explore if they float or sink.
This spontaneous experiment
involved children picking up
few toys for them to explore if
they would float or sink.
