Summer is here and everywhere you look there are fields
of green. This past weekend Lynn and I went to Sturgis
for the Camaro Rally. It was a great turnout with some
very cool cars from all over the country. When we were
in the Hills, we took the opportunity to check out Bruce
Eide’s new Indian Motor Cycle store, Scott Peterson’s
new Ford store, the giant addition Jim Burgess has
just completed to Black Hills Harley Davidson and Jerry
Jasinski’s new Chevy store. The investments these folks have made are huge and
it shows a true commitment to their industries and their communities. In the past
month, I have had the opportunity to travel to both sides of the state and there is
no question the economy in South Dakota is strong – there is major construction
going on all over the place. What a great state we live in!
As my term as board Chairman comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the opportunity to serve this great organization. I would also
like to thank the staff at SDADA for making my job very easy! With our victories
in the State Legislature and the ongoing success of our dealer body, it was a good
year. I leave you now in the very capable hands of Chairman Bruce Eide. Have a
great year Bruce!
Thank you!
Trace Beck
Incoming Chairman’s
Message
First, let's give a big South Dakota 'shout-out' to our
friend and Immediate Past Chairman Trace Beck, of Beck
Motors in Pierre. Trace produced a fine effort this year,
balancing the SDADA duties and functions with his full
time job of running the best looking Chevy-Cadillac store
in 10 states! For any of you folks out there who have not
seen the new store on the hill in Pierre, next time you are
anywhere near, stop in and take a look at this beautiful, modern facility.
We dealers must be near totally crazy. Optimism runs amok! Even our 2013-2014
Chairman Scott Peterson has nearly lost his mind, building and opening a beautiful new Ford store on the South side of I-90 at Exit 32, Sturgis. Here's a guy, super
driven, so very successful, even has that gorgeous Miss Susan working for him!
(Bonus Round... She's been willingly married to the guy for 25 years!) The divine Mr.
Scott is willing to 'roll the dice' yet again and bet that the Northern Black Hills in

President’s Message
During the 2015 SDADA Annual Convention
recently held in Sioux Falls, the annual “passing
of the gavel” took place. I personally want to
thank Mr. Trace Beck for his leadership during the past year he served as Chairman of
the Board. Although we did not have any earth
shaking issues in the past year, Trace was
always there when I needed him. The greatest
success in the past year was our legislative
accomplishments; Trace was always able to talk me off the ledge during those
trying times. Thanks, Trace!
Also of note during the annual convention was the induction of a new chairman. Congratulations to Mr. Bruce Eide who will now serve as Chairman of the
Board for the next year. Jenny Wegner was chosen to receive the 2015-2016
Franchised Dealer of the Year Award. She will now enter national Time Dealer
of the Year competition. Congratulations Jenny! For the first time in history, an
Allied Member, Luverne Truck Equipment was chosen to receive the 2015 Chairman’s Award. They have been a long time supporter of the SDADA.
As you know, the SDADA Comptroller, Pam Kolseth, had a very unfortunate accident in January during which she suffered a major break to her ankle. For a
period of time after the accident, Pam was forced to stay at home. We were fortunate that the dedication to her job made her available to us during her initial
convalescent period. Well, I am pleased to announce that Pam has returned to
work full time! As you visit with her on the telephone, please wish her the best.
Since August of last year, I have again taken on the task of visiting every
SDADA auto dealer member. Most of you have seen me and those that have not,
don’t be surprised when I arrive at your store. All I have left are those dealerships in the northeastern part of the state. It is a monumental task but well
worth my time.
The annual NADA Washington Conference has been scheduled for September
29th and 30th. This is our usual trek to the nation’s capitol for strategy meetings and Captiol Hill visits. If you wish to send a message with the contingency
from South Dakota, please contact your NADA Director, Doug Knust or contact
me.
On a personal note, on May 1st, I started my 15th year as your employee. It has
been a fun ride and I look forward to many great years to come! The SDADA is
a great organization that has a very bright future. Also, please be advised that
we have again awarded 3 scholarships at $1,000.00 each. The congratulatory
letters should go out this week.
Until next month . . .
Myron L. Rau, President

NADA Director’s Message
The world hates change, yet it is the only thing that has brought progress.
-Charles Kettering
The past 12 months have brought some of the most significant change in NADA’s history. For
nearly a century, NADA has pioneered some of the most valuable services in the industry for its
growing membership, right under its roof. These services include the NADA Used Car Guide,
which has been part of NADA's heritage for more than 80 years, and NADART, founded in 1957.
No one ever imagined we would part with either one, and we would not have unless we firmly
believed doing so would benefit our dealer members and advance NADA's core mission.
This was the case when J.D. Power made an unsolicited offer to purchase the Used Car Guide
business. With a difficult decision at hand but unanimous consensus, the NADA board of directors, the Guide board of advisors and NADA's finance and executive committees, all agreed that the best course of action
was to sell the Guide to J.D. Power.
This decision, which was not reached easily or without careful consideration, will benefit our dealer members and the Guide's
current and future customers. The Guide business will continue to grow and become an even stronger industry resource under
J.D. Power. As part of its agreement with NADA, J.D. Power will continue to provide NADA members with a complimentary Guide
subscription as a membership benefit.
In a move unrelated to Guide, after conducting an in-depth review of various retirement plan providers, NADA made a decision
to enter into a relationship with Empower Retirement, a division of Great-West Life and Annuity Insurance Company, to offer
retirement plans to NADA members. Empower Retirement is the second-largest retirement plan provider in the United States
with nearly 7 million participants. The new NADA Retirement Program from Empower will go live in October of 2015, as the
long-standing NADART program is retired.
NADA Retirement Program participants can expect to see many enhanced benefits, including a nearly 50-percent reduction
in program fees, a state-of-the-art website designed to make it easier for participants to track their progress in saving for
retirement, and fiduciary support services at a level higher than those offered by other retirement service providers, which is
a service already familiar to NADART plan sponsors. NADART has been working closely with Empower to ensure a streamlined
transition process for plans transferring to Empower.
While it's difficult to see these long-time services, built over NADA's history, leave the NADA family, we look to the future with
optimism and renewed vigor. And, as always, we will continue to guard the interests of the franchised dealers we are privileged to serve, while remaining steadfast to NADA's mission that began nearly 100 years ago.
Most importantly, these moves will allow NADA to become more mission-focused, centering on core member services, which
include protecting and strengthening the dealer franchise system, advocating on behalf of new-car dealers with Congress,
the regulatory agencies in Washington, manufacturers, the media and the public, providing education and training resources
for dealers and their employees, and providing dealers with better tools to enhance profitability.
ICYMI (In Case You Missed It…)
Retiring General Motors director Neville Isdell says GM has come a long way since the bankruptcy and is in
capable hands, but he sees the turnaround taking 10 years.
David Robertson, Executive Director of the Association of Finance & Insurance Professionals, calls out Senator
Elizabeth Warren’s disdain for dealers.
While a former dealership employee says he doesn’t think auto dealers are half as bad as many consumers seem to
think they are, the July/August issue of Popular Mechanics carries an article a bit more cynical about the dealership
experience.

no one is foolish enough to bet

Speaking of new facilities, our new Indian Motorcycle Sturgis store is nearly complete. It should be open just in time
for the 75th Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, August 3rd-9th. Estimates for Rally attendance this year range from 600,000 to
above ONE MILLION. Working in Sturgis this past year has
been the most fun I've ever had in the car biz. It should be
another really fun Rally...if it doesn't kill me!
June 10-12th brought dealers from all over the state together at the Sioux Falls Convention Center for our 97th Annual
SDADA Convention. Even in monsoon rainy conditions 31
stalwart golfers braved the course in Brandon and had a
great time. Thanks to all who made the day special!
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley honored us with
his presence Friday morning. He is a terrific speaker and our
leading advocate for upholding the law in South Dakota. It's

Congratulations goes to the 2015 Franchised Dealer of the

That’s quite an accomplishment. It’s the first time a woman

New NADA Retirement Program from Empower
NADA is excited about its all new retirement program from Empower Retirement. Because NADA remains
committed to providing its dealer members and their employees with a high quality retirement program, the
NADA board decided to phase-out the current NADART retirement program and replace it with a more enhanced offering. The new NADA Program will offer significantly lower fees while still providing top-shelf
service and class-leading investment options. Meanwhile, NADART is healthy and operating well and during
the transition, it is business as usual.
The plans and services offered to dealers by Empower will bear NADA’s name, and with it, our excellent reputation. NADA has secured important long-term contractual commitments from Empower, and will maintain a
full-time quality control staff to monitor the new Program. Highlights of the new program include:
• A “Most Favored Program” Provision
All investment options that are offered or made available through the NADA Retirement Program will be offered on pricing terms that are at least as good as or better than identical investment options made available by
or through Empower to others.
• Great Service
An agreement to establish and maintain a dealer-dedicated service and call center so that dealer plan sponsors
will have a single point of contact for their entire plan needs. In doing so, Empower also hired a number of
former NADART employees to work on its new team. This dedicated team is in addition to the vast compliance, plan design, testing and other capabilities Empower offers.
• Robust Fiduciary Services
The new NADA program (like the outgoing NADART program) will include a 3(16) Plan Administrator (to
review and execute Form 5500), a Plan Trustee, and a 3(38) Investment Manager (to select and monitor the
investment options).
NADA is confident that the new NADA Retirement Program from Empower will provide a competitive and
attractive program that NADA, and state and metro dealer associations, can be proud of. To learn more,

J&L Harley-Davidson's Riding Academy Free
for Current, Former U.S. Military Personnel
J&L Harley-Davidson is offering its H-D Riding Academy
New Rider Course free to current and former U.S. military
personnel through Operation Personal Freedom.
The program runs through September 13, 2015. There is
an extension available for military personnel deployed
outside the U.S. that is valid through 2016.
"As Memorial Day approaches, we remember all those
who have courageously defended our country," says
J&L's Joe Entenman, Director of Retail Operations. "This
program is our way of saying thank you to the men and
women of our armed forces."
The New Rider Course is designed to get new riders comfortable on a motorcycle and teach them the skills they
need to ride with confidence. The New Rider Course offers
expert guidance from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation®
(MSF) and H-D certified coaches.
All training is done at J&L. Each student is provided with
a motorcycle for the practice range portion of the class.
Students need a valid automobile driver's license or
