Myths about gasoline usage abound.
BRANDPOINT
On any given day, some 40 million Americans stop
at gas stations to fill their tanks. For many, it's a weekly
routine, one they don't spend much time analyzing,
but are there things you think you know about your
fill-up that just aren't true?
Andrea Kaufman considers herself a fairly conscientious auto owner, but the St. Louis Park, Minnesota
resident admits she doesn't know the finer details of
pumping protocol. "I've heard plenty of gas station
tips and tricks, but I'm not always sure which ones I
should believe."
Let's set the record straight as energy experts dispel
three common gas station myths.
• Myth No. No. 1: It's best to buy gas early in the day.
The theory is that gasoline is denser at cooler temperatures, so you'll get more fuel per gallon early in
the morning. While the basic science is correct, the experts at Consumer Reports point out two practical reasons why this is a myth.
First, most gas stations store fuel in double-walled
underground tanks that keep gas at steady temperatures. Second, even if there were variations, the volume difference between gasoline at 75 versus 60
degrees Fahrenheit is just 1 percent - not enough to be
noticeable at the pump.
• Myth No. 2: It's dangerous to use a cell phone near
gas pumps.
According to the Federal Communications Commission, there is no documented incident of a wireless
phone causing a gas station fire or explosion.
It's true that many fuel companies post stickers on
pumps warning motorists to turn off phones while refueling as cell phones could be a distraction. But the
Petroleum Equipment Institute reports the most likely
cause of fire at the pumps is static electricity created
by drivers sliding in and out of vehicles. For safe refueling, PEI recommends you turn off the car engine,
refrain from smoking and stay outside the vehicle.
• Myth No. 3: All brands of gas are the same.
Like more than two-thirds of Americans, Kaufman
buys gas primarily based on price and convenience. "I
don't know if there is a difference between brands,"
she says. While all gasoline sold in the U.S. must meet
federal requirements for performance, not all gas is
the same.
The auto industry has a certification system for fuel.
Top Tier certified gasoline includes additional detergents and fuel additives that remove engine deposits
that can hurt fuel economy.
"Today's more fuel-efficient engines need higherquality fuel for peak performance," says Akhtar Hussain, refined fuels expert at CHS, which markets Cenex
brand fuels at more than 1,450 gas stations in 19
states. "Cenex Top Tier Detergent Gasoline provides
2.5 times the cleaning power of conventional gasoline
and removes deposits for better fuel economy and reduced emissions."
Our Top Tier certified gasoline keeps newer highprecision engines clean and helps older engines perform better, he adds. "It helps clean your engine every
time you fill your tank."
So much for those tank-filling myths. Now it's time
to fuel up and enjoy the drive.

URBAN NEWS SERVICE
Kune Gueye of Nashville, Tenn., fought for a waiver to a state law requiring hair braiders to
apply for a cosmetics license.
By Avis Thomas-Lester
URBAN NEWS SERVICE
Kune Gueye came from Senegal to
Nashville, Tenn., for a better life, but she
had to overcome yards of red tape to earn
her American dream.
To make a living, she turned to a skill
she had honed over years of practice in
her homeland – braiding hair. With a
strong back and a talent for creating beautiful styles, combs and hair oils, Gueye
began braiding at her Louisville, Kentucky, home — frequently working 12hour days. Within weeks, she was able to
pay her bills and send money to her family back home.
Years later, Gueye moved into a shop.
She was married and had three children
by then and wanted to expand. She was
working in her salon — Kine Hair Braiding
— one day when an inspector knocked.
“She told me she was from the state
Board of Cosmetology…and that I was not
allowed to do hair without a license,”
Gueye said. “I told her I had been braiding
for years, and I did not know you had to
have a license.”
Gueye and other braiders in Kentucky
won the right to braid without a license
when Republican Governor Matt Bevin
signed a law in April to exempt them from
the cosmetology school and license requirement. Nebraska's legislature passed
a similar measure in March, but GOP Gov.
Pete Ricketts has yet to sign it.
These victories aside, braiders in several
states still battle regulations that require
them to undergo up to 2,100 hours of instruction at cosmetology schools. These
can cost more than $12,000, even though
few such programs teach braiding.
Seventeen states regulate braiding the
same way they do traditional cosmetology, and 16 states require a special braiding license. Eighteen do not regulate
braiding, said Paul Avelar, senior attorney
for the Institute for Justice, a self-described libertarian law firm in Arlington,
Virginia.
It has helped braiders fight such rules
in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Iowa,
Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio,
Texas, Utah and Washington, D.C., since
its founding 25 years ago.
The institute's first case, in 1992, was
Taalib-Din Abdul Uqdah v. District of Columbia, in which Uqdah and his wife,
Pamela Ferrell, the nationally-recognized
owners of Cornrows & Co., successfully
challenged Washington, D.C.’s cosmetology code, which was adopted in 1938.
They claimed that they should have been
exempt because they used no chemicals,
dyes, sharp objects or other items that
alter hair structure, as traditional stylists
often do.
“This issue is about race, control, power
and politics,” Uqdah said. “You and I
wouldn’t be having this discussion, but
for the fact that African-style braiders are
making money hand over fist.”
A Kentucky cosmetologists’ trade association complained that the exemption
legislation allows braiders to style hair
without learning about disorders of the
skin and scalp that can result from improper styling, according to news accounts.
Nina Stribling, 38, of Louisville, Ky., said
she has been going to Gueye for 18 years
for micro braids. Her daughter, 23, is also
a long-time client. When the family moved
to Kansas for four years because of her
husband’s military service, Stribling drove
11 hours back to Louisville every six
months to get her hair done.
She said she’s never had a problem with
her hair or scalp and credited Gueye with
taking special care after her hair grew
fragile from the medicine she takes for
lupus.
Stribling said she has become close with
Gueye’s family, including Gueye's mother,
who moved to Louisville and started
braiding a few years before her daughter
did.
“She’s very good,” said Stribling. “There
has never been an issue with my scalp
being red or my hair being braided too
tight. She knows what she’s doing and is
very professional.”
Avelar said few states set out to regulate
hair braiding, but problems occur, when
officials try to apply “broadly worded”
codes penned decades ago, to braiding.
“Then they gave the power to enforce
this law to a regulatory board and required that the regulatory board be made
up of members of the regulated industry,”

A little over a year ago, she
and her mom purchased a
beautiful home and as far as
she is concerned, all is well.
But if you asked me, I’d have
to disagree. The problem is,
now her mother goes everywhere with us. When we go on
a girls’ getaway weekend, to a
friend’s wedding or to a baby
shower and even to the club.
She even went with us to go
see Charlie Wilson! Don’t get
me wrong, I love my friend’s
mother, but I don’t want to
party with her or always have
her around. I’ve become hesitant when making plans with
my friend as she always assumes our plans include her
mother. What can I do? How
can I explain to her, her
mother is not “always” invited?
Three’s a crowd
Dear Three,
Heavens to Hezekiah, girl,
say it ain’t so! When y’all
hanging out, her mama can’t
go! From what I’ve read,
here’s my take: When it
comes to her mama, that’s not
really your choice or decision
to make.
I think this situation is on
overload, because it gives
them both an opportunity to
reconnect at a different phase
of life. Two grown up women

has died; both are grieving
and serving as the rock each
one needs at this time. Sooner

Does your friend have family in the area? Maybe you
could encourage her to make
plans for her mom to visit extended family for the weekend, alone. Maybe she can
spend time with a sister,
cousin or childhood friend in
a neighboring city. It sounds
like her mom was used to
having someone around,
probably her deceased husband, and now she needs her
daughter to fill that void. Your
friend, obviously operating to
be the best daughter she can,
is ready, willing and able to do
what’s necessary to make her
mother happy. There’s nothing wrong with that. I can say

Avelar said, adding a “financial incentive”
to the enforcement of these laws.
Uqdah called licensing an infringement
on the “economic liberty” of braiders,
many of whom are black or African-born
female immigrants whose opportunities
for gainful employment would be limited
but for braiding.
Avelar said there is a “consensus forming” among liberals, libertarians and con-
servatives that licensing requirements for
workers need to be “pared back.”
Gueye, who testified before the legislature on the exemption, never wanted to
speak for a cause.
She just wanted to disentangle braiders
from impediments to their work.
“We are free now,” she said. “That’s
what we wanted – to be free to just braid
hair and help our families.”

Five graduation gifts for the graduate in
your life:
1) Patricia Nash Chieti agenda $69
Life after high school or college will be busy.
In a digital age, it’s easy to put everything in
a digital space, but there’s just something
about physically writing down whatever the
day holds. You can’t put little hearts next to
something digital.
2) Tag Springfield III five-piece luggage set
$200
When you’re done writing down everything
that life entails in your fabulous agenda, start
packing for wherever life takes you. Maybe
that means traveling through Europe while
you study abroad, or perhaps it includes taking a bit of time off, but it might mean packing for college…or spring break. Either way,
you need luggage.
3) Kelly Ripa Home Pressed Floral 10-piece
comforter sets $300-$360
Fun and simple—and a big accomplishment, like graduating, means many things—
mostly it means it’s time for a new comforter.
We didn’t make the rules, we just carry them

4) Kelly Ripa Home Origin KRH10 ivory grey

Whether you’re buying your first home or
looking for that perfect apartment, a good rug
can go a long way.
5) Kate Spade New York wit and wisdom

basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or
melanoma. Basal and squamous cell skin cancers are the
most common skin cancers.
These lesions occur in areas
that are exposed to the sun,
such as the face, ears, neck,
lips, and back of the hands.
Basal and squamous cell cancers can be either fast- or
slow-growing, but they rarely
spread to other parts of the
body. If detected and treated
early, these types of cancer
have a 90 percent cure rate.
Melanoma, on the other
hand, although it accounts for
a small percentage of skin
cancer, it is far more lethal
than basal and squamous cell
cancers. In fact, melanoma accounts for more than 75% of
all skin cancer deaths and can
spread to other organs, such
as your liver and lungs. The
AAD states that on average,
one person in the US dies
from Melanoma every hour.
What are the risk factors?
Risk factors for skin cancer
include:
• Unprotected or excessive
exposure to ultraviolet (UV)
radiation or sunlight – including indoor tanning (beds, sun
lamps) which can increase
your risk by up to 75%
• Having a fair complexion
• Work-related exposure to
coal, tar, creosote, arsenic
compounds or radium
• Having a family history of
skin cancer (can increase your
risk by up to 10 times)
• Having multiple or atypical moles
• Experiencing severe sunburns as a child
Are there ways to reduce the
risk?
The best way to reduce the
chance of developing skin
cancer is to avoid intense sunlight exposure and to practice
sun safety. Several guidelines
for protection from the sun
include:
• Avoiding the sun between
10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Wearing protective clothing when out in the sun
• Using sunscreen with a
sun protection factor (SPF) of
15 or higher
• You should remember to
apply generous amounts of
sunscreen before you go outside and to reapply after
swimming, towel drying, or
perspiring
• The use of sunglasses
with 99 percent to 100 percent UV absorption provides
optimal protection for the
eyes and surrounding skin
• It is important to follow
these practices even on
cloudy or overcast days, as
UV rays travel through the
clouds.
• Avoid indoor tanning. No
tanning facility should advertise with wording like “safe”,
“no harmful rays” or similar
wording, because that is not
true.
• Practice monthly self skin
exams to monitor moles/dark
pigmented areas and watch
for changes as well new
growths.
What are the signs of skin
cancer?
Understanding the signs
and symptoms of skin cancer
frequently leads to earlier detection and subsequently a
better clinical outcome. You
should check your skin regularly. Common signs of skin
cancer include any change in
the size or color of a mole or
darkly-pigmented growth.
New oozing, bleeding, irritation or change in the appearance of a bump or skin nodule
should also prompt concern.
Most skin cancers have very
high cure rates when they are
caught early, so check with
your doctor immediately if
you have any of these symptoms. Many primary care
providers will refer you to a
dermatologist, a doctor who
specializes in skin-related
health issues, for further diagnosis and treatment.
According to the AAD, you
should see a dermatologist if
you have anything on your
skin that lasts for two weeks
and is:
• Growing
• Changing shape

WHY YOU’LL LOVE: VA DA VIE GELATO
Gelato that’s

ASHLEY MAHONEY/THE CHARLOTTE POST
Coffee bean gelato at Va da vie Gelato.
By Ashley Mahoney
ashley.mahoney@thecharlottepost.com
Why you’ll love Va da Vie Gelato, 4203 Park Road:
1) Gelato
One word. It’s like ice cream, but better. Enough said.
2) Changing flavors
While we’re partial to that time they had a coffee bean
flavor, this mixes things up and forces you to try something new. Maybe you usually go with plain chocolate,
not that we don’t love chocolate as much as the next
person. But seriously, mix it up once in a while.
3) The shop itself
It’s adorable—quaint, but you’re getting gelato, not a
five-course meal. How much space do you need?
4) Local
There’s some sort of saying about how when you purchase from a family-owned operation, you’re helping a
little girl get ballet lessons or a family pay their mortgage, etc. Family-owned places make you feel like a
part of the family rather than another forgettable face.
5) Name
“Va da Vie” means road to life. There are countless
clichés about being alive but not really living. It’s a
small thing, but enjoy what you eat.

While in the coma, a doctor told my mother I was either going to die

The medical staff doubted both him and I. He said it again, I responded

I was taken off the respirator and even moved to a different floor. I

days after that request, they came to me with the report of “we see no
need to keep you here, you have done beyond great, a miracle; Are you
ready to go home?’ (to be continued)

There are three chains which bind every sinner in the clutches of Satan.
Do you know what those three chains are? Walk into the average church
and ask the members, including the pastor; “did you ever know that
every sinner is bound by Satan with three chains?” He'll not have the
slightest idea what you are talking about. Let's read the three chains that
Satan uses to bind every nominal Christian; “For all that is in the world,
the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not
of the Father, but is of the world.” (I Jn. 2:16) Those are the three chains
Satan uses to bind every sinner out of Christ! We have never seen the lust
of the flesh like we are seeing it today! Pick up your daily paper or
monthly magazine; they are filled with page after page of near-completely naked women. The Hollywood stars love to appear with little
clothing on. And all those pictures in the magazines and papers of
women with near-completely naked bodies are used to entice lusting
after the flesh. Let me pause here in this study to say that one of the
leading sins that led up to the destruction of the earth by the Flood was
the prominence of the female gender. Let's look briefly at the scene
Moses laid out in Genesis 6 to understand worldwide conditions in
Noah's Day. “AND it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the
face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,” (Vs 1) In Noah's
Day there was a population explosion. That is what the word “multiply”
means. Now, look carefully, Ella, at the next Words; “...and daughters
were born unto them,” (Vs 1) Moses particularly calls our attention to
the multitude of daughters born during that time. As my old late pastor,
L.R. Shelton, Sr. used to say; “hold your seats now; we are going to
jump a creek down here and if you don't hold on you may drown.” My
cousin Ella and I live here in Deep Creek. We were born in Deep Creek
community and we have been out there on and in the creeks of late. Hold
and get this truth if you can; “That the sons of God saw the daughters of
men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they
chose.” (Gen. 6:2) The first question that comes is; “who were the sons
of God?” This is the first time we find this expression in God's Word. A
man here in North Carolina and my late preacher friend from Virginia,
Hubert Davis, (an a-millennialist) were greatly baffled by this truth as to
whom the Sons of God were. The greatest commentary on the Word of
God is the Word of God itself. We find the same phrase elsewhere in the
Word; “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present
themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.” (Job
1:6) Preacher Davis and others believed that the sons of God were sons
of Seth. When the Book of Job was written, the sons of Seth had long
departed this earth. Also note that Moses said; “...and Satan came also
among them.” There we see an agreement between Satan and the sons
of God. We find also in Job 2:1 “AGAIN there was a day when the sons
of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came
also among them to present himself before the LORD.” Twice we see the
sons of God coming before the LORD and each time Satan came also
among them. Satan and these sons of God were working together. Satan
was their leader! Where in the Word do we find the sons of God again
in the Old Testament? “Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of
the earth?...” “When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of
God shouted for joy?” (Job 38:4,7) If you'd just let the Word speak to
your heart you could see that the 'sons of God” were present when God
laid the foundations of the earth. So then, who were the sons of God?
They could not be sons of Seth as preacher Davis taught because man
had not been created at this time. The sons of God were angels. In Genesis 6 Moses said; “That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that
they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.” The
word “fair” means beautiful, women of dazzling beauty. That is one of
the reasons why the sons of God took wives of these very beautiful
women. But there was a more subtle reason why Satan introduced these
fallen angels into the human race. “What was the reason?” you ask. The
deep purpose of the introduction of fallen angels into the human race by
Satan was to corrupt the blood line! If Satan could corrupt the blood
line, the promise of the Seed of the woman in Genesis 3:15 could not
take place. The Seed of the woman is the Messiah, Christ. Do you see
that Satan was present and was trying to thwart God's plan to redeem a
people for Himself from among Adam's fallen race?

Healthy career outlook for health
care professionals with law skills
Brandpoint
Career opportunities in the health care industry are
expected to continue growing more quickly than in
virtually any other industry, according to the Bureau
of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Not only is the health care industry expected to add
more than 2 million new jobs by 2024, many existing
roles will continue to evolve, creating additional opportunities for professionals currently working in
what is a very broad field.
Health care law is one area seeing significant growth,
thanks in part to the impact of the Affordable Care
Act (ACA). It's one of the fastest-growing disciplines
for graduate and post-graduate degrees, according to
Lawyer & Statesman. The changes spurred by the
ACA are also inspiring many professionals to learn
more about the law to enhance their career opportunities and boost their skill sets.
"Health care professionals routinely find their day-today tasks affected by legal issues like regulatory compliance, risk management, malpractice, ethics, and
patient privacy," says Scott Johnson, professor of law
at Concord Law School, part of Kaplan University.
"Recent laws and regulations governing these issues
and the delivery of health services generally make
knowledge of health care law a real career asset these
days. A background in law can help a wide range of
professionals, from administrators to clinicians to
technology entrepreneurs be more effective in their
current roles and better positioned to seize emerging
opportunities."
Legal expertise can benefit health care professionals
and their patients across many aspects of the industry,
but it is particularly helpful in three key areas, Johnson notes:
* Regulatory compliance - Compliance professionals
help providers prevent, detect, and correct any actions, policies, or procedures that are counter to the
many regulations governing the health care industry.
They also help promote ethical conduct. The Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
(HIPAA) of 1996 propelled growth in this area and
regulatory compliance has been one of the fastestgrowing professions over the past 15 years. Health
care professionals in a wide range of positions including those who work with electronic health records,
Medicare or Medicaid requirements, or the various
requirements from the Affordable Care Act (ACA)
could benefit from knowledge of legal issues related
to regulatory compliance.
* Ethics - A subspecialty of regulatory compliance,
knowing legal issues related to ethics is particularly
important for professionals working in facilities
where research also takes place. Bioethical principles
and standards cover areas such as human subject research, genetic privacy, patient rights, rehabilitation
ethics and more.
* Risk management - This discipline focuses on reducing errors to protect patients as well as health care
employers. This includes provider and institutional liability, notification and apology programs, risk assessments, patient safety, and adverse event reporting.
The growth of health care law has encouraged schools
to create specialized degree programs for professionals seeking added legal expertise, but not planning to
become practicing attorneys. For example, Kaplan's
Concord Law School offers a health care law track
within its Executive Juris Doctorate (EJD) program.
Since most industry professionals are working fulltime, and often outside of the typical 9-5 work day,
going back to school can be challenging. However,
as the first fully online law school since 1998, Concord provides a unique solution.
"One of the great benefits of the online EJD Health
Law program is that it is offered through our law
school," Johnson says. "EJD students take the same
classes that our law students take and they learn from
the same law professors. Attending our law school
provides EJD students with a thorough understanding
of the law. They enjoy the opportunity to develop the
skills necessary to analyze the law and explain its impact. Plus, they get to do all of it in a flexible, online
2527+(57$/&8032:'(5/,1.('72
program. EJD students can apply these skills by helping health care providers and professionals comply

Juneteenth season is here.
Belmont hosts its celebration June 18
from 2-9 p.m. at Stowe Park, 24 South
Main St. The 19th annual Juneteenth
Festival of the Carolinas is June 17-18
at House of Africa, 1215 Thomas Ave.
at 6 p.m. Both are free.
Juneteenth commemorates the end
of slavery in the U.S. when Union
troops under the command of Major
General Gordon Granger arrived at
Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865 to
enforce the emancipation of Africans.
The celebration is a major event in
Texas but has grown in stature across
in the Carolinas, where Charlotte has
one of the largest.
The Belmont celebration annually
draws participants from Gaston, Lincoln and Cleveland counties. The festival highlights cultural traditions
through food, arts and music. Vendors
will be on hand to sell arts, crafts and

ASHLEY MAHONEY/THE CHARLOTTE POST
Summer reading essentials include
“Sex and the City” by Candace Bushnell.
By Ashley Mahoney
ashley.mahoney@thecharlottepost.com
If you’re heading outdoors, or communing in a quiet place, here’s a suggested summer reading list Part II:
1) “Amy Snow” by Tracy Rees
It’s the time machine you always
wanted! Somewhere between Charles
Dickens and Jane Austen is a contemporary commentary on issues that remain just as relevant in 2016 as they
did in the mid 19th Life, love, friendship, the choices made throughout the
course of one’s existence—whether
you’re waiting to get on a plane or
lounging by the lake, this is a perfect
companion…just don’t try to read it in
one sitting unless you’re planning on
spending all day traveling from New
York to Tokyo.
2) “The After Party” by Anton Disclafani
Maybe this one won’t take you to England in the 1800s, but it might take you
to Texas in the 1950s. Surprisingly,
these two novels compliment each
other nicely—except this one has a better pool vibe than the beach…don’t
question the vibe, just go with it. This
novel shines a bright light on everything wrong with humanity—even the
aspects of life that are supposed to be
true and unblemished…like love…or
obsession…the jury is still out on the
definition of that emotion.
3) “Sex and the City” by Candace
Bushnell
Classic. Perfection—great for wherever the summer takes you. The ultimate social commentary on human
existence in the last 30 years…which is
vaguely disturbing, because the ultimate point of this combination of
columns is that humanity is a horrible
waste of space, but the last line makes
the entire sordid trip worth it—“Carrie
is happily single.” Need I go on?

Broadway more diverse,
but has it really changed?
Tony Award nominee “Hamilton” leads the pack in Broadway’s diversity in casting roles.
JOAN MARCUS
African Americans have prominent roles, but is timing or philosophy?
By Mark Kennedy
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
NEW YORK – This season, the theater
community is celebrating how Broadway
has finally become the Great un-White
Way.
Black actors have taken center stage in
"The Color Purple," ''The Gin Game," ''Eclipsed" and "Shuffle Along." A Latin cast
shines in "On Your Feet!" and Asian-Americans told a bitter story from America's
past in "Allegiance." The season's megahit
"Hamilton," of course, has multi-racial
leads in its DNA.
At Sunday's Tony Awards, 14 of the 40
nominees for acting in plays and musicals
- 35 percent - are actors of color. And
more non-whites are nominated on the
other side of the stage, including choreographer Savion Glover, director George
C. Wolfe and playwright Danai Gurira.
But this season's diversity may be more
a coincidence of timing than Broadway
stages consistently providing an accurate
reflection of America's melting pot.
"The aligning of the stars has occurred
this year where a lot of really spectacular
work featuring multi-racial casts and a
true photograph of what the world and
America really looks like is performing on
Broadway night after night after night,"
said "The Color Purple" producer Scott
Sanders. "Will we see this being the norm
moving forward? I'm not so sure."
Neither is Pun Bandhu, an Asian-American actor and a member of The Asian
American Performers Action Coalition's
steering committee. The group is the only
one that collects data on Broadway's diversity – it started collecting it nine years
ago – and it offers a sober outlook.
According to its latest report, non-white
actors haven't ever in the past nine years
represented more than 26 percent of all
Broadway roles. Though numbers for the
current season aren't ready yet, the numbers for minority roles last season actually dipped to 22 percent, down from the
previous season's 25 percent.
"What last year's numbers prove is that
while we may be having an extra diverse
year this year ... that's not usually the
case," said Bandhu. "It hasn't changed that
much actually on Broadway."
The numbers suggest improvements
one year, then a drop off the next. The
2013-14 season was rich with roles for
African-Americans, including "A Raisin in
the Sun" starring Denzel Washington,
Audra McDonald channeling Billie Holiday
in "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill" and
the dance show "After Midnight."
There were also African-Americans in
nontraditional roles, like James Monroe
Iglehart as the Genie in "Aladdin," Nikki M.
James and Kyle Scatliffe in "Les Miserables," and Norm Lewis becoming the first
black Phantom on Broadway in "The Phantom of the Opera."
That season, black actors represented
21 percent of all roles. But the next season, the number fell to 9 percent.
This ebb and flow is nothing new to
Stephen C. Byrd, a veteran Broadway producer behind his season's "Eclipsed." He
recalls a diverse Broadway when he produced an all-black revival of "Cat on a Hot
Tin Roof" in 2008.
Back then, Morgan Freeman was starring
in "The Country Girl," Laurence Fishburne
was in "Thurgood" and such shows as
"Passing Strange," ''In the Heights" and the
original "The Color Purple" were playing.
"That was a time of great diversity on
Broadway," said Byrd, who produces minority-driven works with Alia Jones-Harvey. "We've been at this for 10 years and
it's taken from that time to come to where
we are today to see that same diversity on
Broadway."
This season, Byrd is watching as Broadway is cheered for its inclusiveness at a
time when the film industry has come
under heavy criticism for a lack of diversity in the Academy Awards. There's even
been the bragging #BroadwaySoDiverse
to rival #OscarsSoWhite.
But next season isn't shaping up to be
as diverse as this one.
While black actresses will lead "Cats "
and "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet
of 1812 " and African-American actors will
be represented in "Motown" and August
Wilson's "Jitney," the lead actors are so far
all white for the upcoming "The Cherry
Orchard," ''Heisenberg," ''The Glass
Menagerie," ''The Master Builder," ''The
Present," ''The Bandstand," ''Hello, Dolly!"
''Les Liaisons Dangereuses" and "Falsettos."
Of the six leading parts in "Holiday Inn,"
only one will be played by an actor of
color. All six leading roles in a revival of
"The Front Page" will be played by white
actors.
"As a producer, you have to be aware
that audiences are demanding diversity.
They want to see themselves reflected on
the stage," said Bandhu. "I think it has
been proven that diversity is good for
Broadway."
Box office data shows that overall Broadway grosses are flat, meaning producers
will have to attract nontraditional theatergoers if they want to see profits go back
up.
“
Sheila E., D’Angelo and
One such person used to be Daveed
Diggs , an actor and rapper who earned a
Tony nomination in his Broadway debut
in "Hamilton." Raised in the Bay Area,
Diggs said he never went to Broadway
when he visited New York.
"As someone who was on the outside of
it, who's always been on the outside of it,
there is an elitism that you feel coming
from Broadway," he said. "I didn't care because it didn't seem like they cared about
me."
Liesl Tommy, the South African-born
and Tony-nominated director of
"Eclipsed," has made it her mission to
change that feeling, hiring people of color
for the creative team and onstage. "To
think that you are not part of the problem
is a grave mistake," she said.
Perhaps her most influential work is actually far from Broadway - the 2,000 seat
theater at Disneyland where she directed
a stage production of "Frozen" that will be
seen by up to 10,000 people a day.
"One of the things I had to advocate for
was diversity in casting," said Tommy,
who has watched people - black and white
- in tears as a young black actress belts
out Elsa's anthem "Let It Go."
On Broadway, no show has more captured the cultural mood like "Hamilton" connecting musical theater to hip-hop
and celebrating minority actors. Other important firsts were made in non-traditional casting, including Sophie Okonedo
in "The Crucible" and Forest Whitaker in
"Hughie."
But even in this diverse season, there
were some sour notes, as when "Dames at
Sea" included grotesque racial stereotypes
and a revival of "Noises Off" – a farce
about the making of a stage show - had
no minorities among its nine-member
cast.
"The message that that sends is that,
'Theater is for white people.' For a show
that is supposed to celebrates the industry as a whole, it really is glaring that people of color were completely omitted from
that," Bandhu said.
He urges producers to push for non-traditional casting - he congratulates "Waitress" for hiring non-whites for two-thirds
of the lead actresses - and putting minority actors in lead roles.
"Hopefully things like 'Hamilton' start to
change the curve a little bit. The penny
starts to drop. When you start seeing
more visible talent from actors of color
and you start seeing them being populate
on stages, then their absence becomes
even more stark."
I think it has been proven that diversity is good for Broadway

Brown: Friend to blame for Out & About
Whitney, daughter’s death

THE ASSOCATED PRESS
NEW YORK – Bobby Brown is
suggesting family friend Nick
Gordon is to blame for the
deaths of his ex-wife Whitney
Houston and the couple's
daughter, Bobbi Kristina
Brown.
Houston was pronounced
dead in February 2012 after
being found submerged in a
bathtub. Her death was ruled
an accidental drowning.
Brown was found unresponsive in a bathtub in January
2015. She went into a coma
and died six months later. An
autopsy couldn't determine if
her death was intentional or
accidental. Both women had
drugs in their systems.
Brown has joined a wrongful death suit against Gordon
in his daughter's death. He
tells ABC News that "the same
thing that happened to my
daughter is what happened to
Whitney." He says "there's
only one person that was
around both occasions," but
refuses to speak Gordon's
name.
Gordon denies having anything to do with Brown's
death.
know they've seen some darkness, too, but then Ed grabs a
guitar and starts crooning
"Can't Help Falling in Love"
and you forget all about the
demon spirit lurking in the
tattered leather armchair in
the corner of the living room.
Heck, the cranky dead man
in the corner terrorizing a
working-class family outside
of London probably even enjoyed Ed's Elvis impersonation, too.
Oh, right, there's a cranky
dead man in the corner because this is a horror movie
and not just a quirky romance
about the Warrens.
The story deals with the Enfield Poltergeist - a highly documented 1977 case about a
single mother, Peggy Hodgson (played here by Frances
O'Connor); her four children;
and the strange and terrifying
happenings in their small
home. As with most stories
about haunted houses, it
starts small - bumps and
voices and knocks, mysterious bites and sheets that fly
off of children in the middle
of the night - and escalates
quickly to demonic possession of an 11-year-old girl,
Janet (Madison Wolfe), by a
72-year-old Bill Wilkins (Bob
Adrian).
This time, though, the Warrens have their own issues. In
a prologue about the Amityville murders, Lorraine sees
something that scares her so
deeply, she has no choice but
to put her foot down and demand that she and Ed stop
this business of paranormal
investigation. They can do the
lecture and the press circuit,
sure, but no more of this getting inside heads.
Meanwhile, the whole industry of paranormal investigation is being picked apart
by naysayers in the press, so
when the Enfield situation
springs up, the Catholic
Church basically asks the
Warrens to go ahead and try
to get proof first to save the
church from another embarrassing hoax situation. While
interesting, the constant skepticism and wavering trust also
work to dull the fun of the
scares. Is the audience supposed to doubt little Janet,
too? It's never really clear.

The film is also way too long
and the tricks end up feeling a David Cropps, interior mechanic for Richard Petty Motorsports, steers Aric Almirola’s Ford Fulittle repetitive and obvious, sion racer at Charlotte Motor Speedway before the All-Star race. although there's a really great
sequence in the Warrens'
home with a creepy picture
that Ed painted.
The horror sequel is a tough
thing to pull off in general,
and "The Conjuring 2" is most
certainly one of the better efforts. The case files of the
Warrens should provide some
wickedly fun material for
many sequels to come. But,
for better or worse, the first
movie was just too good and
"The Conjuring 2" can't hold a
candle to its predecessor.
"The Conjuring 2" is rated R.

‘The Conjuring 2’ scares, but
not as well as the original
MOVIE REVIEW
By Lindsey Bahr
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
If "The Conjuring" was a
chilling whisper, the sequel is
a deafening shriek.
That might not be a bad
thing for some, but the shock
jumps and cheesy-looking
demons in "The Conjuring 2 "
were a definite departure
from the first, and not necessarily for the better. The brilliance of director James Wan's
elegant original film was how
it used our own horror savvy
against us. He'd allow for a
long take of a terrified girl
peering under her bed and let
it stay there long enough to
the point where your muscles
start to tense. You instinctively brace for the shock that
you know is coming ... and
then ... nothing.
At that point a creepy face
or a loud knock on the door
wasn't actually needed. The
suspense was more than sufficient. The audience was already petrified.
"The Conjuring 2," however,
goes all out. It's even louder,
somehow. And there are more
demons, more jump scares,
more creepy antique toys
and, thankfully, more Ed and
Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), the
most delightfully campy couple of supernaturally sensitive
marrieds ever to grace the
screen. They're like everyone's favorite Sunday School
teachers - she's the earthy
one, he's the groovy one. You
