** John Drewett notes in his book Hardy
Brothers, the Masters, The Men and Their
Reels (pg. 120) that a handwritten note in the
1891 factory catalogue indicated that, for a
reduction of 4/- per size, Perfect reels could
be purchased less regulator, ball bearings
and drum perforations, J.D. goes on to
surmise that there is a very strong likelihood
only very few of these models were actually
produced as most Hardy clients were affluent
enough to afford the more expensive option
– we are aware of two 1891 examples having
been acquired by collectors over the last 25
years but have no knowledge of a similar
example to this 1894 transitional model ever
having been offered for sale previously.

** The above reel is truly representative of a
“missing link” in the development of the
Hardy salmon fly reel, as far as we can
ascertain there are no records in existence of
such a model ever having been produced
commercially; the first true “Brass Faced”
model having been the regularly seen Brass
Faced Perfect salmon reel. John Drewett, in
his book, Hardy Brothers, The Masters, The
Men…, does allude to the possibility of a very
small number of Birmingham style alloy reels
having been produced pre-1895, but only in
smaller trout sizes (due to the poor quality of
the aluminum available at the time) and none
with either a brass face, or in the larger
salmon sizes. However, Drewett states that,
of the very few Birmingham style trout
models that have surfaced, all were full alloy
versions (see Drewett J.: Hardy Brothers…
illust 86b, pg. 108), he also goes on to state
(pg. 130) that in 1895, with the technical
advances in the production of aluminum,
Hardy’s introduced the Brass Faced Perfect
salmon model, indicating that the reel offered
for sale here was likely to have pre-dated the
inception of the Perfect version.

The following 46 lots are from the estate
of the late Roy Beddington (1910 – 1995).
Roy was an internationally renowned and
highly respected fisherman as well as
being a prolific watercolourist, book
illustrator, writer and environmentalist. He
was a regular contributor to Country Life
and other sporting magazines. He also
wrote and illustrated his own (mainly
fishing) books and exhibited his artwork
at the Royal Academy and other London
galleries. He learnt to fish on the River
Test at Longstock, where his father
created the famous Longstock water
gardens. A passionate advocate for the
preservation of the habitat of freshwater
fish and eels, his research into members
of the salmonidae family and on the
migratory life cycle of eels is still in use
today. As honorary vice president of the
Salmon & Trout Association and chairman
of the Fisheries Committee's Hampshire
River Board he continued throughout his
life to play an active role in policy making.
He fished in most of the rivers of Britain
and Ireland and beyond, but was perhaps
happiest beside the southern English
chalk streams, often using the dry fly he
had created himself; the “Roy’s Fancy”
(marketed by Ogden Smith).

The following lot is to be sold on behalf
of the Alex Lewis Trust.
Alex Lewis, 34, his partner Lucy and four
year old son Sam are the proprietors of
the famous Greyhound Hotel located on
the banks of the river Test in Stockbridge.
In November 2013 Alex contracted a rare
form of Strep A Toxic Shock Syndrome
which resulted in him becoming a
quadruple amputee and also suffering
severe facial disfigurement. Doctors gave
Alex less than a 5% chance of surviving in
the first week of his illness - but as Alex
has shown he is a fighter and has no
intention of letting his disabilities affect
him, having personally carried out
numerous fund raising events, including
a recent parachute jump. The trust has
been set up help finance and support his
rehabilitation and the incumbent costs of
on-going treatments and equipment.
Angling Auctions would like to extend our
gratitude to Chris Sandford for bringing
this very worthy cause to our attention.
We are delighted to do the little that we
can to help Alex on his path to recovery
and thank those others who have
generously donated items to be included
in the following lot.
