Bras d’Or Lake is North America’s largest
in-land sea.
Cape Breton is a boaters paradise. The Bras d'Or Lake
is known for its wealth of beautiful anchorages and
hundreds of secluded coves and islands.
The highly irregular shoreline of the Bras d’Or Lake is
790 miles or 1272 km long.
The deepest part of the Bras d’Or Lake is St. Andrews
Channel with a depth of 942 feet or 286 meters.
The tides in the Bras d’Or Lake range less than half a
meter; tidal currents in the entrance to the Great
Bras d’Or average 4-5 knots? Non-tidal currents
are weak.
The Bras d’Or Lake is sheltered on all sides, ensuring
the Lake is warm in the summer with water
temperatures averaging 75.2-78.8°F or 24-26°C.
Cape Breton Island, know for its fog-free waters,
has South-West prevailing winds from May through
to October.
Within the Bras d’Or Lake and around the coastline of
Cape Breton there are marinas, yacht clubs, launch
ramps, access to fuel, provisions, pump out services,
and professional mechanical support.
Bald Eagles from the Bras d’Or Lake watershed were
taken to re-establish the eagle population in the
Northeastern United States.
