ctober 1, 2013, marked my first anniversary
with Palisades Village. In this past year of
thoroughly enjoying my job, I’ve learned how
uniquely wonderful Palisades people are. We have
interestingly diverse, intelligent, and loving members and associate members. Our volunteers, who
collectively provide more than one thousand hours
of service, are remarkable in how they put their
time and talents into helping their elder neighbors.

This past year’s focus has been to increase the benefits to our full and associate
members. We now have a more robust schedule of social activities available to both levels
of membership. Additional group meals at private residences and restaurants have created
new opportunities for connectivity. Our field trips to historic house museums and gardens

In addition to our standard services, we have initiated a visitor program for homeloves dogs and babies gets a weekly visit from a volunteer who brings her dog along.
Another volunteer drops by with her infant son. In another case, a member who loves
music and conversing in his native tongue, German, is visited by volunteers who speak
German with him and one who plays her flute for him.
To fulfill our mission we are always welcoming new members and volunteers. Think
about how our program could benefit you or an elder neighbor of yours. If you are not
on the receiving end of membership, consider volunteering with Palisades Village. Just
helping a member once or twice a month makes a big difference and affords the great
sense of satisfaction that comes with community building.
I cannot close this message without thanking our dedicated board for their combined
energy and leadership and our volunteers for being the engine that makes us run. Neighbors
helping neighbors is not just a slogan — it’s who we are.

A
self-professed “farm girl,” 92-yearold Ruth Koczela prides herself
on maintaining an active lifestyle,
a way of living that might exhaust someone twenty years younger. It may be
the reason she looks so young herself.
Ruth’s travel schedule alone — spending
time with her six children, eleven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren in
various locales — requires a whiteboard.
This year saw a trip to Florida, another
to Milwaukee, and then it was off to an
exciting safari in Kenya. Next Ruth plans a
stay with her daughter in North Carolina.
When she is more or less “stationed”
in Washington with her son Jack and
his wife, Julie, this former WAVE officer
says what she likes best is taking
her twice-weekly exercise class at Iona
Senior Services, to which Palisades Village
volunteers unfailingly drive her back and
forth on those mornings. Ruth enjoys
the variety of yoga and strength-building
routines she encounters at Iona, a local
partner of Palisades Village, as well as
the company of other seniors and the
affability of her instructor. Making exercise
a priority in her nineties is not surprising for a woman who not only received
her first “jump certificate” (as in out of
an airplane) in her eighties but who with
her late husband was a “roads scholar”
with Elderhostel, traveling to exotic places
such as the Galàpagos Islands. (Even if
you already know about this organization,
just ask Ruth to show you the witty guide
she prepared for Elderhostel courses.
Very amusing!)
3 Progress Report
Ruth is still attracted by the rural
life she knew as a youngster and returns
each summer to the farm in Williamsburg,
MA, where she was born and raised. The
two-level home she shares in DC offers
her a measure of independent city living,
and thanks to the Village, Ruth also has
access to stimulating interactions with her
peers and neighbors.
Jack, a retired real estate financier,
also does some volunteering for the Village on breaks from his business. Both
Ruth and Jack agree that Julie, who works
for the Historical Society of Washington,

a good neighborhood we share.” When
executive director Peggy Newman learned
from Kathy that Bruno was especially
responsive to music and as well to his
native German language, she set about
to find just the volunteers to fill the bill.
Janet Heisse along with Ursula Daniel and
Traude Knauer have graciously tuned up
their German for weekly conversations
with Bruno, and another volunteer, Deborah Weinberger, plays the flute for him on
a regular basis. Bruno, with his caregiver
Juana, has also enjoyed attending a few
social events sponsored by the Village
this past year.
Kathy is struck by the warmth and
compassion of the Village volunteers, and

has some new energy when Lizzie
Schueler is on the scene. PV’s newest
and youngest board member, Lizzie is
all about innovative ideas, best practices,
and action. Since joining the board in
November 2012, her focus has been on
communications and on identifying
additional financial resources for the
Village, helping to write grant proposals,
and following through on the successes.
On a nuts-and-bolts level, she has also
helped create a more functional and
engaging website for the Village, which
is just the first phase of the website
work-over.
In her professional life Lizzie works
for an international conservation organization and before that worked for years
responses. She says her career-long focus
on things international motivated her to
seek community in her own backyard as
a counterbalance. A native Bostonian, she
knew about the terrific Beacon Hill model
of neighbors helping neighbors, and it
was an easy step from there to participating in Palisades Village.
The other reason, she points out,
is that as the youngest of six children
she grew up “always truly enjoying the
company of an older generation.” Of the
Palisades members, she says, “They are
so wise! They’re just not bothered by the
same things younger people are, and I find
that so refreshing, so enlightening really.”
Her highest hope for the organization is that it will reach out and resonate
with a broader population, as it has
with her. “The Village is not only about
providing services; it’s about providing

Palisades Village celebrates

Building Community
The Palisades Library has
proved a great partner by
offering their meeting room
for our board meetings and
our speaker events. We are
grateful to have this convenient venue. Early this spring
Boy Scout Troop 61 spent a
Saturday doing yard cleanup for several members. This
was the fourth year middleschool students from Saint
Patrick’s Episcopal School
spent Environmental Service
Day performing yard work for
Palisades Village members.
With fall came eighth graders
from Georgetown Day School
to rake leaves and de-clutter
basements.
Not only has Palisades Village
been the beneficiary of generous donations from individuals and businesses, but we
have been awarded grants.
A donation from the Masonic
and Eastern Star Home of the
District of Columbia Charities
helps us subsidize memberships for low-income residents.
A grant from the Mary and
David Loughran Foundation
supports an increase in social
and educational functions.
Palisades Community Fund gift
this year helped support the
2013 Palisades Village House
Tour. Our deepest gratitude
goes to each organization.
The central objective of the
first Palisades Village House
Tour was building community,
and it was a smashing success
on all levels (see the following

Our tour featured eight beautiful and unique homes,

the response!
From the House Tourists
Greetings! Fresh off the Home
Tour and inspired by a great
day! It was wonderful to see
neighbors, in addition to the
beautiful and storied homes.
Congratulations on the outreach. I think it was certainly a
successful “friend raiser” and
fundraiser.
My daughter and I spent most
of the afternoon today on the
Palisades House Tour and had
a terrific time. Georgetown
has been having house tours
for years and I’ve taken them
many times. I have never been
on one of their tours that was
as well-run as this one. The
Villagers did an amazing job
for first timers. We were given
tote bags with an excellent
brochure describing each
house, booties to wear over
shoes for going through the
houses, etc. At each house
several docents were present
to provide additional information and answer questions.
It’s been a few years since
I’ve done a Georgetown house
tour but I remember those
as being given a map and
then being on my own. And
those tours didn’t end like
this one — sitting in a lovely
garden sipping a glass of
punch, munching on a cookie
(actually several cookies), and
listening to a Dixieland combo.
But best of all was the eclectic
mix of fascinating houses that
make the Palisades so unique. I just went to the Palisades Village’s website and
signed on for a monthly donation. I only give to charities I
know are well run. The Palisades Village clearly qualifies.
first-class. I am sure the
word-of-mouth reports will
be terrific, and you could
have twice as many folks
participate next year if you
decide to do the tour again.
We enjoyed it immensely.
Many thanks.
“Smashing Success. It was so
professionally done. It was just
a wonderful day. A miraculous
job done by all involved. It was
wonderful to have a personal
driver from Palisades Village.”
It was a GREAT day! Peggy [Newman] has really energized this
organization, And, we found a
great new restaurant, Et Voila!,
on MacArthur Boulevard. Judy [Watson] and Janet
[Bullinger], I think both of
you deserve kudos for the
success of the house tour. I
know how long and hard you
and the fundraising committee members worked on this,
and I can’t think of any other
effort over the past years that
worked out as happily. Thanks
so much!
Your team did a marvelous job
today! The tour homes were
breathtaking, and the guides
9 Progress Report
It was a totally wonderful day
for all of us lucky enough to
get to every single house.
There were so many informative assistants at each house,
and the map booklet was full
of even more information. Fun
to see the homes and learn
the history of each one. There
was an interesting diversity of
types of architecture, interior
design, art, and collections for
each stop as well. The whole
day was very well organized.
Thank you all!
From the House Owners
and Realtors
It was a pleasure to open our
house for such a wonderful
cause. We are so pleased the
ticket sales were much higher
than expected, and that the
first Palisades Village house
tour was a success. Kudos to
everyone involved.
Just thought I’d share with you
my posting on the PCA Facebook page after the house tour
on Saturday . . . such a nice
community and communitybuilding event. I’m hearing
the same from many friends
and neighbors!
Congrats to Palisades Village
on a very successful house
tour today. So nice for so many
people in the neighborhood to
open up their homes for such
an important neighborhood
asset. Proud to have been a
realtor-sponsor of the event!
Congratulations to everyone
on a very successful event this
weekend. Our hard work paid
off and I hope that the final
funds raised for the Palisades
Village exceeded the groups’
expectations. Congrats to Janet
[Bullinger], Peggy [Newman],
and Judy [Watson] for heading
up this effort. It was a wonderful day and a well-attended
tour.
It was such a terrific day and
resounding success! I was serious when I said to put us down
in advance to sponsor two more
homes next year. . . . Thanks for
your amazing organizational
skills and generosity with your
time and talents!
