Currently, STEI has 5 undergraduate study programs. They are (i) Electrical Engineering (EL) (ii) Electrical Power Engineering (PE)(iii) Telecommunication Engineering (ET) (iv) Informatics Engineering (IF) and (v) Information System and technology (II). There are 2 master study programs (i) Electrical Engineering and (ii) Informatics and 1 Electrical Engineering and Informatics doctoral study program. The vision of our school is to be an outstanding and competitive higher education in Electrical Engineering and Informatics in Indonesia and well recognized internationally, an has active roles in improvement of national welfare. To achieve this vision STEI puts strong efforts to continuously improve the educational process based on international standard. In this point of view Electrical Engineering program is the pioneer for enrolling international accreditation conducted by ABET (Accreditation Board on Engineering and Technology). We are proud to announce that this program is ABET accredited since 2011. This undergraduate handbook contains information about vision, mission, undergraduate programs and the 2008 curriculum along with the officers, research groups and laboratories that support the undergraduate programs. I do hope that this undergraduate handbook will be very useful for students and faculty members as well as for the public. I personnaly express my gratitude toward all STEI community. Suwarno 13 |S E E I I T B The School in Brief The School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (SEEI – ITB) was officially founded in January 1st, 2006 based on Rector Decree No. 012/SK/01/OT/2005 as a merging between Department of Electrical Engineering and Department of Informatics Engineering which are originally within the Faculty of Industrial Technology. Both departments have a long history in conducting higher education in electrical engineering (since 1947) and in informatics engineering (since 1982). In response to society and industrial needs, the school with the commencement of 2008 curriculum opens three new programs: Electrical Power Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering and Information System & Technology. In addition to the five undergraduate programs, SEEI also offers two master’s programs and one doctoral program.The overall SEEI’s student body is about 2.500 on the average. The school currently has about 120 permanent faculty members and is supported by 74 nonacademic staffs. Among the faculty members, 76 of them hold doctoral degrees and 34 faculties hold master’s degree from prominent universities around the world, which bring international cultures and best practice into the school’s academic atmospheres. Each faculty member is affiliated with one of nine research groups hosted by SEEI. SEEI facilitates undergraduate programs with a total of 17 educational and research laboratories. Students also have access to thousands of books and other learning material from ITB’s central library, SEEI’s library as well as from digital library. Additionally, the school hosts several research and training centers from which students can further enhance their educational experiences in preparation of their professional carreers. 14 |S E E I I T B Vision and Mission Institut Teknologi Bandung Vision ITB shall be an institution of higher education and center of development for science, technology and art, who continuously strives for world excellence, reliability and respectability, and together with other respectable institutions of the nation leads the Indonesian society into unity, sovereignty and prosperity. Mission ITB shall guide developments and changes carried out by society through innovative and quality education, research and community service, and be responsive to global development and local challenges. To study this interdisciplinary field, basic science and engineering are required. This includes basic and advanced electronics and computer, anatomy and physiology, biomedical physics, biomedical transducers and instrumentation, and biomedical system design. The biomedical engineering research areas focus on medical instrumentation, e-health and telemedicine, biomedical imaging and image processing, as well as biomechanics and medical rehabilitation. The research areas cover the electronics system architecture design, System on Chip (SoC), Algorithm optimization for hardware implementation, VLSI Design, Hardware-Software Co-Design and Device Design and Implementation. The researches are targeted for various applications such as WiMax, 3GPP LTE, Smart Card, Security Engine, Low Power MIPS/RISC Processor Design, Wireless Sensor Network, Nano wire and sensors. The research utilizes industrial standard Design Tools for Hardware Design and Simulation. Several implementations use standard chip such as FPGA, DSP and Microprocessor. The group also has small scale clean room for developing laboratory experiment devices. The system development utilizes several advance industrial CAD Tools and implementation technology such as Applied Specific Integrated Circuits (IC), Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), GPU, Multicore DSP, Microcontroller and etc. ME also has responsibility to develop electronics techno industrial cluster in Indonesia. 23 |S E E I I T B SEEI Centers Mobile Inno Sphere Center Director: Dr. Yusep Rusmansyah Mobile Inno Sphere Center is a center of excellence for mobile application, service, and information security teaching, research and development. It is currently supported by Nokia, and is a continuation of former Mobile Broadband Technology Centre (MBTC) which was supported by Bakrie Telecom. The center conducts teaching, research and development on various aspects of mobile and web technology, not limited to Nokia-branded platforms, but also other platforms such as Android, BlackBerry, Apple, Bada, BREW, and other platforms. As of year 2011, there are over 30 mobile applications successfully published in Nokia/Ovi Store, Android Market, Apple AppStore, and BlackBerry AppWorld and receive good acceptance by worldwide users. There are over 19 teams of students funded in terms of scholarship totaling to over USD 80,000 by some sponsors. International collaborations, travels, and showcases are experienced by contributing students. Agung Harsoyo With the rapid development of ICT in the business world, there is an increasing demand for professionals who have better understanding and skills in the Java Technology. As an effort to fullfil this growing need, in the year of 2005 Sun Microsystems Indonesia and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) established a Java Training center in ITB called Java Competency Center (JCC). Provided with Sun International standard curriculum and Sun certified instructor, JCC ITB assists everyone who wants to gain fundamental knowledge and develop one’s skills in Java technology to enhance a professionalism for better career development. JCC ITB has two programs for achieving its goals : 1. JEC (Java Education Center) has some goals, as follow : develops Java skill/competency, promotes nature talent, and adopts Java to current IT curricula. 2. JBRC (Java Business Resources Center) has some goals, as follow : Develops Java product, Nature IT Companies, Java Adoption, and goes to market. From the beginning (2005) until now, JCC ITB has graduated many students and has develop Java based applications at ITB, such as wireless/mobile applications, Enterprise applications, Java for mobile agent, Java for Intelligent system, and Java application specific. 25 |S E E I I T B SEEI Centers LanGrid Bandung Operation Center Director: Dr. Ayu Purwarianti The idea of LanGrid Bandung Operation Center is to provide free services of natural language processing softwares and conduct researches in natural language processing (NLP) and text mining of Indonesian language and regional languages of Indonesia. The main goal is to be a center of NLP in Indonesian and regional languages. LanGrid Bandung Operation Center is also connected to the Language Grid center, located at Kyoto, Japan (http://langrid.nict.go.jp/en/index.html). This center is now still in preparation phase where the membership is open to anyone who wants to participate in the research of natural language processing and text mining of Indonesian language and regional language of Indonesian. Meanwhile, the members are lecturer staffs of School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics who have research interests in Indonesian language (and regional languages); and students whose final projects and research thesis are in natural language processing and text mining of Indonesian language. Telematics This sub-center undertakes both pure and applied research in the general field of telecommunications networking covering networking technology, services, protocols, security, management, Regulatory and Policy. Huawei IP Training The IP Training Center (IP-TC) is a cooperation between STEI-ITB (School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics ITB) and PT. Huawei Tech. Investment to support developments of skilled human resources in telecommunications and IT sectors. The training center is focused on IP technology, on which all modern communication platforms and infrastructures are based. The IP-TC will be used both for educational and professional purposes. ITB students will benefit since they will be trained in the IP-TC to become familiar with IP networking technology as a complement of the existing curriculum. Radar and Microwave Technology It focuses its activity on the development of Microwaves Devices including antennas, microwave passive and active devices, and radar systems including radar signal processing and radar devices. Supported by the ITB Grants, the ITB-Alumnae Association grant, the Asahi Glass grant and the RISTEK Insentif grant, recently this sub-centerhas developed numerous microwave devices such as multiband antennas for wireles communication, waveguide converter, UWB antennas and filter, and some radar prototype such as a compressive-sensing subsurface radar for through-wall and ground-penetrating applications. The most recent activity is to develop planar reflector using textured surfaces, metamaterialbased dual-band antenna, SOM (Self Oscillating Mixer) for LNB (Low Noise Block), ultra-thin tunable microwave radar absorber based on AMC (Artificial Magnetic Conductor), and frequency-hoping radar based on SDR (Software-Defined Radio). It supports laboratory works for core EE courses such as Electrical Circuits (EC), Electronics and Digital System (DS), as well as for EE breadth courses such as Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and Microprocessor System (MS). Each semester the laboratory can handle labortory works for up to 240 students for EC, 380 students for DS, 80 students for DSP and 120 students for MS. In addition, the laboratory also provide services of electronic laboratory work for Industrial Engieering study progam and Embedded System laboratory work as well facilitate students in their final projects. Basic of Informatics Engineering Laboratory Basic of Informatics Engineering Laboratory provides computing services to all students at the School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics (SEEI). It particularly supports laboratory works for basics of programming, algorithm & data structure as well as objectoriented programming courses. This laboratory occupies five rooms, hosting a total of 181 units of networked computers with Internet access. Whenever any of the lab rooms is not used for scheduled laboratory work, SEEI students may use the lab to do their courseworks and access to the Internet. Biomedical Engineering Laboratory The Biomedical Engineering Laboratory has strategic position between the disciplines of biomedical instrumentation and biomedical informatics. Research in Biomedical Instrumentation including improved medical imaging construction, fetal sign detectors and systems, Ultrasound hardware and diagnostic software. Some researchers focus on the application of various technologies for implementing E-health for rural area including mobile telemedicine. There are also research in imaging technology directed toward the application of image processing for diagnostic purpose. All new students admitted in the school of electrical engineering & informatics must take the same prescribed courses during the freshman (first) year (a total of 36 credits). All undergraduate students are required to take industrial training in private or government sector for about 10 weeks during the short semester of the third year. The purpose of the training is to provide students with practical technical knowledge and to expose them to working environment in the industry. The curriculum also requires all senior (final year) students to do a research or design project related to their fields of study. This is to give students an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skill acquired to solve a significant real world problem. Students must write a formal report and defend it in front of final project examiners. Final Project I & Seminar (Credit 2) Preliminary investigation of real world problems in telecommunication engineering. Students submit and give oral presentation on a significant project proposal outlining the background, problem formulation, a proposed solution, a comprehensive literature review and detail implementation plan. Prerequisites: has completed at least 108 credits. ET4099. Final Project II (Credit 4) Final Project II is taken by students who conduct research under guidance of one or two supervisor(s). Normal time required to complete Final Project II is one semester. At the completion, students are required to submit a report and to defend their work in the final project examination. Prerequisite: ET4096. ET4282. Selected Topics in Telecommunication (Credit 1) The course provides state of the art technology and business aspects in telecommunications sector.
