Why Corner The promises that Jesus made to us. Last Sunday we celebrated Jesus as The Good Shepherd. Jesus expressed that He would love to take care of us, tend us and protect us as His sheep, if we: (1) heed His Voice; (2) follow Him; and (3) belong to Sunday 9:00 a.m. Billy Boone, S.I. the flock, His Church. We also come to realize that Jesus cannot do 11:15 a.m. Confirmation Candidates much for us if we don’t want to be part of the flock. when we are not 5:00 p.m. Special Intention part of the flock, the Church, the Shepherd cannot protect us; we are on our own and we place ourselves into harms way and dangerous situaMon. 12:10 p.m. Billy Boone, S.I. tions. Today’s Gospel continues in the same line of thought. Jesus Tues. 12:10 p.m. Billy Boone, S.I. promises us many things and He only asks us one thing, to be faithful to Wed. 12:10 p.m. Billy Boone, S.I. Him and to His Father. Let’s re9:30 a.m. Mass flect on the Gospel to see the benefits and the promises when we are 5:30 p.m. Mass faithful to Jesus and God. May 29, 2011 First, Jesus promised us that “I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.” Not only did Jesus 9:00 a.m. Mass promise to come back again for us, but He desired for us to be with Him 11:15 a.m. Ellen Kane Landsman, R.I.P. in heaven. Here is a great truth put in the simplest way; for the Christian, 5:00 p.m. Mass heaven is where Jesus is. We do not need to speculate on what heaven will be like. It is enough to know that we will be forever with Him. When we love someone with our whole heart, we are really alive only Please call the church office to schedule mass intentions. when we are with that person. Jesus expressed that He wanted to spend eternity with us and for us to join Him in heaven. He also expressed that Diocese policy suggests an offering of $10 or more per He wanted to be a part of our lives forever and ever and that He and His mass intention. Father would like to see us. Do you want to be in heaven? Are you living right by His standards? READINGS FOR THE WEEK Second, Jesus promised “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. I am going to prepare a place for you?” The older Monday: Acts 14:5-18; Jn 14:21-26 translation has mansion instead of house. Jesus is telling us that there is Tuesday: Acts 14:19-28; Jn 14:27-31a already a place for us in heaven, His Father’s mansion. There is a special Wednesday: Acts 15:1-6; Jn 15:1-8 place reserved for us in heaven by Him and by His Father. Basically, Thursday: Acts 15:7-21; Jn 15:9-11 Jesus is telling us that our names are written in heaven. They are carved Friday: Acts 15:22-31; Jn 15:12-17 in ours’ Father’s mansion, outside of our rooms. We will have our perSaturday: Acts 16:1-10; Jn 15:18-21 Sunday: Acts 8:5-8, 14-17; Ps 66; 1 Pt 3:15-18 sonal space. Jesus will be the architect of our places in heaven: “I’m going to prepare a place for you.” Knowing that Jesus is designing and or 1 Pt 4:13-16; Jn 14:15-21 or building a place for us in heaven, we can certainly conclude that it will be Jn 17:1-11a perfect and flawless. Our place in heaven is in the most trusted and reliable hands, the Almighty Carpenter, Jesus. Are you living a life to deWeekly Offertory serve heaven or are you losing your place in heaven? Regular 5/08/11 $4,782.00 Third, Jesus promised “I am the way, the truth and the life.” The 5/15/11 $4,156.00 Bible, which is composed of the Old and the New Testaments, are God’s words. Through this sacred book we find the meaning of life (eternal life), we find God’s truth and His way for us. These sacred words are the secret for obtaining Eternal Life with Him. The Bible is like the modern day GPS, Global Positioning System. We all start at any point in our lives and we will all arrive to a final destination, hopefully heaven. The words of God will tell us where we are in our lives and in our relationship to Him. They tell us when to turn left or right, when to apply the pedals for brake and gas, and hopefully, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes (Why Corner continued on next page) to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6 Why Corner (continued) when we reach our destination, we’ll hear God’s voice saying “you have arrived. Welcome to heaven.” Have you read the Bible, God’s words lately, so that every turn of your life will always lead to heaven? Fourth, Jesus promised “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” We all have been taught in our faith formation that when we attend mass we see Jesus in the Eucharist. Based on Jesus’ words, if we see Him we also see the Father. If that is the case, maybe the following questions should be asked. How often do you want to see Jesus and The Father? How often do you want to see God? Isn’t it true that when we love someone we want to see that person every day even if it’s only for a second because of the circumstances or situations. Many, and a majority, of us only see God physically 52 times for 52 weekends, plus holy days of obligation. Some of us two times a year plus special occasions. Maybe, we should consider seeing Him more because we have 365¼ days every year. If we would do the math, 52 divided by 365¼, we only see God 14% of the time in a year. While living here on earth for all these years and we only want to see God for such a small percent of time, how does that express our love for Him? Should we consider seeing God more often by visiting the Church and attending Mass? Fifth, Jesus promised “whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these.” Jesus promised not only that we will do the same works that He has done but that some of our works and deeds are even greater than what He has accomplished. Wow, you take a deep breath! This might be hard for some of us to swallow, even think or comprehend or even conceive this in our minds that some of our works will be greater than the Master Himself. When we believe in Jesus and in ourselves, we can do the works of Jesus and even greater ones. Have you done any works greater than Jesus? If not, maybe you are not doing enough for Jesus and for God! Fr. Young Advice for Children “Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and reject not your mother’s teaching; A graceful diadem will they be for your head; a torque for your neck” (Proverbs 1:8-9) BE HAPPY Instead of worrying trust God. “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7) Development of the Unborn Child Jesus at Week 9 My eyelids are starting to move-I can squint! I can also frown or pucker my brow. It was greatly appreciated and most helpful to Lily and I. Now, it's that time of year again to sign-up for church flowers. We have about 350 families in our church and I only need approximately 30 members to fill the whole year. Flowers can be purchased or picked from your garden. All the grocery stores carry flowers as well as Lowe, Wal-Mart, and florists. The beautiful arrangements we had at Easter were done by Blossoms Florist and I know the owner, Brandy, would be willing to work with any budget. Perhaps several families would like to go in together or maybe you could honor a birthday or anniversary. This would also be a wonderful way to honor a loved one. Please consider signing the flower sheet in the back of the church. As always, I am willing to help you with vases, containers or any other needs you might have. My phone number is 478-452-7564. Thank you so much! Barbara Middlebrooks Releasing the Holy One day God noticed a huge racket going on around a man in Italy. Day after day, this man hammered and chiseled away at stone; it was as if he had discovered something alive inside it and with determination and passion he labored to set it free. From pieces of marble that he himself had chosen from the Carrara quarries, he set about “releasing” magnificent figures. Yet even God was surprised at what was emerging out of the stone this time. The man was trying to set God free! God went to visit the sculptor. “Michelangelo,” God said, “what exactly are you doing?” “Lord,” he answered, “I am setting you free, so everyone will recognize you, not only in this stone, but in all those who suffer unjustly and die violently at the hands of others and those who mourn for them. I don’t want people to forget what you did for us.” And the Lord spoke again to Michelangelo: “Hmm. In times past I have stayed in rocks and mountains, wells and tombs, and in the Ark of my Temple, but I don’t remember living in the stone you are working on now.” And Michelangelo answered, “Lord, as I see it, since your Son came to us, you don’t have to pick and choose your places of rest. He left your Holy Spirit everywhere; we just have to search it out, discover it, touch it, and reveal it to others.” The Lord was more than happy with what Michelangelo had said and left him to get back to work. Michelangelo chipped away at the huge piece of marble and slowly, very slowly, the sculptor set free the figure of a woman holding the body of her dead son in her lap. Living Stewardship Now What does the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus mean? The image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a symbol of Christ’s love f for us. It is often a heart surrounded by flame, pierced by a lance, topped by a cross, and circled by a crown of thorns. Jesus’ love for us burns bright and intense like a flame. His heart is pierced by the lance representing our sins and the crown of thorns and the cross remind us of the death he suffered to bring us life. Why is the third hand on the watch called the second hand? If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know? If Webster wrote the first dictionary, where did he find the words? Why do we say something is out of whack? What is a whack? Why does “slow down” and “slow up” mean the same thing? Why does “Fat chance” and “slim chance” mean the same thing? Why do “tug” boats push their barges? Why do we sing “Take me out to the ball game” when we are already there? “Genuine sacred art draws man to adoration, to prayer, and to the love of God, Creator and Savior, the Holy One and Sanctifier” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2502).
