1885 STAYSAIL SCHOONER 40’. The current owner of
DUGA inherited her from his brother-in-law, Dusty, and says:
“Here is the history of the DUGA as best I remember from
Dusty who owned her and a few stories other old pirates told
me. The hull was built in Germany in 1885. It is riveted
"quarter inch" black iron with lots of patches that add
character. She was originally a river tugboat, one of the
reasons she only draws 3.5 - 4 feet of water with the keel up.
During the war - WWI - she was moved to Sweden to avoid
having her melted down for ammunition. Sven Lunden-Yrind
found her on a canal in Sweden in 1968 and turned her into a
staysail schooner. He rigged her to be sailed by one man,
apparently his specialty. His website, http://www.yrvind.com/,
tells the story (if you read Swedish, if not -the pictures are
interesting). The website also shows his travels. His last
voyage ended in Florida in 1971 where Dusty met him and
bought the DUGA. Dusty sailed her up and down the Americas
and many trips to his beloved Bahamas.

PT-761 NEW -- AT ELCO, BAYONNE, NJ
Power or sail, wood or fiberglass -- we do not discriminate.
I am doing research on a yacht that I saw back in 1960 at the
Snow Inn in Wychmere Harbor, Harwichport, Mass on Cape
Cod. It was a beautiful boat with perfect lines having been
converted from a PT boat (#761) after the war. The purpose
of this search is for model making.
If you know of boats needing rescue, please let us know.
If you have restored a boat, we would love to hear about it.
Let your story be an inspiration to others.
Boat listing information supplied by owners is assumed to be
reliable. We take no responsibility if it’s not.
The boat was built very near the end of WWII and never
actually went into military service. It was an Elco class 103
and was eventually sold to a civilian and remodeled
completely. She was named the Taurus V at one time and
renamed the Moby Dick when I saw her.

© Copyright 2007 All Rights Reserved.
As recently as 2002 she was stored in a yard, completely
stripped of her superstructure and was destroyed when there
were no funds available to move her to a new location. So the
boat is nothing but a memory now.

However she did survive for forty odd years and no doubt did
some traveling in her day. What I need is ANY information on
owners of the boat, the place that did the conversion work or
any pictures that someone might have of this yacht. As far as
I know the attached picture is the only one of her in her glory
but the owners have to have many more shots of her if I can
find them. Anyone with any info on this yacht should email
me at normanmcgill@yahoo.com, write to me at Pete McGill,
11401 Bonita Beach Road #76, Bonita Springs, Fla. 34135 or
call me at 239-947-8110.
Dear Dave -- I am going to send in my check for the
continuation of what I consider to be a Resource, because of
my love of Classic Old Boats.
I have one suggestion for you as the new publisher and that is
this. It would be very nice if Ginger still had a "Corner" in your
paper. ie; "Ginger's Corner". I know she was well liked by
everybody including myself, of who had long conversations
with her when I signed up and signed my brother up at the
same time.
You are doing a good job........ "Stay The Course Captain"
-----Bone Yard Boats Reply----Jim,
I couldn't agree more! Ginger returned to Bone Yard Boats in
the Summer issue with her edition of "Dinghy News." I spoke
with her recently about making that a regular column, which
hopefully she will do. As far as I'm concerned, Ginger always
has a home for her writing in Bone Yard Boats.

Hi, I have a 24" Mahogany ship's wheel for the old
Richardson Cruisers. My father is the one who made them for
the Richardson Boat Company in North Tonawanda, N.Y. He
made them at his workshop at our home on Niagara Falls
Blvd. He worked his "day job" as a model maker at Bell
Aircraft and later Cornell Air Lab. Can you tell me if there is a
market for this wheel? It seems like ebay only lists cheap
replicas for decorating and stuff. Any help you can give me
will be greatly appreciated. Have a great day. Margaret

Dear Mr. Irving: We are a boatyard in Port Washington, New
York. As is the usual story with these beautiful old boats that
have been let to fall into disrepair, a 1937 43 foot Matthews
was abandoned and subsequently liened by ourselves. She
has been in our yard for about four years now and we would
love to see her go to a good home. Your predecessor, Ginger

Subject: Schooner Truant
Hi David,
I was just doing a web search on the Schooner "Truant" and
saw your site... I'm originally from Gloucester and was one of
those "Sea Scouts" who sailed on the Truant. It was "Ship 56"
of the North Bay Council. At that time approx 1968-71, it was
owned by Paul Harling, he was a school teacher at Beeman
School in Gloucester. As I've read, it was later owned by Doug
Parsons, also of Gloucester. This ship was in the Schooner
races in Gloucester. I quit Sea Scouts back when I got my
drivers license in '71...got girl crazy...joined the USAF in '74
and never went back to Gloucester except to visit my parents
who still live there. Retired from the Air Force in '94.

1885 STAYSAIL SCHOONER 40’ (cont). Dusty lived on
her with home base being Islamorada, Florida until he passed
away a few years ago. We moved her to a marina in Austin,
Texas and started restoration. She has had quite a bit of
scaling and welding already. She does have a small Volvo
Penta (1 cyl.) engine. The engine was pulled and serviced last
year. She measures 40 foot with a 10 foot beam. She was
derigged (saved and labeled) by professionals in Islamorada.
The sails are in very good shape and are dry and stored.” She
is certainly a unique piece of history worth saving. If
interested, please contact Bob at bob@bjennings.com (TX)
Anyway, I was wondering if you'd send me page 1 and 9 of
your "Boneyard Boats" Spring 2007 with the article of the 55'

collection of junk from my childhood...

In 2006 the Tiedemanns were awarded the Ray Thombs

associated with a yacht under his command.” In 2005,
Captain Kirk Reynolds was awarded this honor for the many
boats under his care, which now includes the famous 1937,
74-foot APHRODITE. Captain Reynolds said I have a lifetime
invitation to be onboard APHRODITE, plus joining the crew for
the awards dinner and boat parade.
“How did it get so late so soon?”
The above quote is from a Dr. Seuss book and expresses my
sentiments. By the time you read this it will be well into fall,
and where did the summer go? Here is a recap of some of the
classic boat events I attended.
GINGER MARTUS
BONE YARD BOATS FOUNDER
First, it was on to Mystic, CT for the
three day WoodenBoat Show over
June 29th to July 1st. Wow, what a
great event!
I saw lots of my
nautical friends and had a great
time, especially when I met JB
Currell (MAS Epoxy) who was talking
to big bad Bob Bitchin (Lats and Ats
Magazine) while a cameraman was
in the background doing his thing.
Seems JB and Bob have a program
in the works about “This Old Boat,”
similar to the TV show, “This Old
House.” Great idea & it’s about time.
In between shows, I received a call from Pat Wells, the
chairperson for the Antique & Classic Boat Show in Salem, MA,
asking me to be a judge for their August show. I was
flattered to say the least and recalled when my late Uncle
Monty said to me one day, “Well, you look like you know what
you’re doing.” I thought it over for a few days trying to figure
the easiest way to get there. I don’t like to fly, train goes to
Boston then a change, too long of a drive. I called Pat and
said it would be too much of a hassle to get there, so I missed
this one.
Closer to home was the Tuckerton Seaport over September 8th
and 9th. The Seaport is part of a large complex with many
buildings, exhibits, gift shop, and even a restaurant called
Skeeters. At the gift shop, I bought two copies of the book
‘Shipwrecks of the Jersey Shore’ to present to the next two
winners of the ‘Bone Yard Boats’ awards. At this show, the
winner was John and Gretchen Coyle. Yes, it was WHITECAP
again, and the Coyles donated this handsome yacht to the
Tuckerton Seaport.
Later JB invited me plus Bob and his wife, Jody, and others to
a cocktail cruise in a beautiful newly built launch. It was a fun
ride, and Jody did the honors of passing the cheese and
crackers from one of the cardboard flaps from a box that held
the booze, used as a tray. We arrived back at dockside in
time to attend the clambake buffet dinner with special guest,
Phil Bolger, who spoke about his designs and boats. The
three days went by too fast, as they tend to do lately, but the
weather was perfect, lots to see and do, and I had a good
time. This event will be held at the same place over June
27th-29th, 2008; see more info at thewoodenboatshow.com.
Go, you’ll have a good time, too.
The next boat show I attended was the 25th Antique & Classic
Rendezvous held at the Johnson Brothers Boat Works in Bay
Head, NJ. This is also where the Museum of Boating is
located. On September 15th the other book went to Andrew
Murray of Brick, NJ for his 1965, 22-foot beautiful launch
called ANNA BELL. There were many awards plus a group of
classic cars to view. The boats were open to the public, and
Bette Bass, the owner of CIGARETTTE, asked me to be a ‘tour
guide’ on the boat. This fabulous yacht is the 1929, 75-foot
‘commuter’ that was a total basket case at the International
Yacht Restoration School in Newport, RI until the late Bob
Tiedemann contacted the late Jerry Bass who had the yacht
cut in half and trucked to NJ and restored to perfection,
including the claw-footed cast iron bathtub.
Then, on July 14th I attended the 31st Wooden Boat Festival at
Toms River, NJ, where I presented the “Bone Yard Boat
Award” to the 1924, 30-foot WHITECAP, where the former
owner, Charles Temple, was there to receive the award. This
now beautiful boat is owned by John and Gretchen Coyle of
Beach Haven, NJ. It was designed by Charles Mower and built
by Morton Johnson. The Coyles found the boat in terrible
condition in Florida, had her trucked back to NJ where it was
restored by Bill deRouville and his crew. This boat has won
many awards in the past few years. I also helped Stu Sherk
and Joyce Turner who had a booth for the Antique & Classic
Boat Society (ACBS). Stu is president of the Barnegat Bay
Chapter, and he and Joyce attend many classic boat and car
shows from Florida to Newport, RI. This is a good show with
lots of boats, food, art, and flea markets and vendors, too.
Best I sign off now before David runs out of space!
Next was the 32nd Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous on July
28th-29th at Mystic, CT. Yes, I went to Mystic Seaport three
times this year. It’s a long trip from where I live but worth it.
This year the show was dedicated to the memory of Bob
Tiedemann. His wife, Elizabeth, came with the 1911, 40-foot
launch FAWAN, one of many boats in the Tiedemann
collection. Dana Hewson, Director of watercraft and a judge,
was chairman of the awards committee and presented a
‘special citation’ to Elizabeth – a large framed Benjamin
Mendlowitz photograph of FAWAN that was used extensively

IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS …
NEEDS SOMEONE TO FINISH THAT JOB
The following is part of an email exchange with a member of
the Bone Yard Boats community who was informing me of
some abandoned boats. It serves as a grim reminder that
they are out there and timing is everything!
“This was my fathers boat.
He recently passed away
unexpectedly. He was in the middle of restoring it, so it needs
someone to finish that job.”

It is with great sadness that I report that the 40 ft
constellation and the 1955 55' have both been destroyed.
Neither were prime examples of wooden boats, however it's
just pure madness that they were butchered. It appears
someone wanted the engines from both. The really sad part is
I know them both to have had bad engines. Both blocks were
cracked on the 40's engines.
The 55 on the other hand has been vandalized, abused, and
the cabin top hacked off for the removal of her engines. If
there is someone who has a lot of time and money, it *could*
possibly be saved. It's a hell of a long shot though. I don't
see it being realistic. Anything of any value has been stolen,
she's mutilated, and any hardware is gone. The hull itself
does appear to be intact however. I could not do much of an
inspection though, so I have no idea what kind of structural
condition it is actually in. Not too good I would assume.
1937 MATTHEWS 39’
1937 MATTHEWS 39’. According to Ben, “This boat is
about 38-39 feet long and we believe it was a 1937 Matthews.
The boat is in great shape, it does float and its twin Chrysler
engines are fully operational as well; both props are in great
shape. This boat is located in southwestern Ontario;
specifically it is docked in Port Lambton (south of Sarnia,
Ontario, Canada).
Beyond the woodies, there was an old fiberglass Jersey (about
30 ft I believe) with diesels that is still mostly intact. Needs
some serious loving, and I have no idea if anything is good,
but it's still a boat for the most part. Not much else worth
mentioning. A couple smaller older dismasted sailboats with
loads of damage, one or two other power boats far beyond
their prime, a beat to hell houseboat, and an old steel boat
with the bow missing, but closed in with a steel plate. Weird
looking thing the steel boat is.
My Dad had bought this boat a couple years ago to restore it
and had spent all last summer working on it. Unfortunately
earlier this year my father became very sick and passed away
very suddenly. My mother doesn't need the boat and wouldn't
be able to finish the restoration. I do not want to see this boat
sitting dry-docked until it rots and I know my father wouldn't
want that either. The boat was fully winterized this last year.
Regards, Chris S.
There is no trailer for this boat (you would not be able to pull
this with a normal vehicle!) but there are many moving
solutions available that are relatively inexpensive.
I know a little about the boat but if you have any questions
please send me an email and I will try to answer what I can.
Asking $5000 or best offer for the boat.” Contact Ben at

1937 MATTHEWS 39’ – RUNNING GEAR & CHRYSLER ENGINES
Ben mentioned in an email to me that he “the boat is fully
operational as I was out on it several times last summer.” I
believe that means the summer of 2006.
He is also
considering a unappealing alternative if a buyer cannot be
found soon: “…options right now are to donate the boat to
the local fire department to perform an "at sea" fire simulation
but as the boat is in good shape I would hate to see it used
for that (they would set fire to it and put it out but obviously
destroy the boat in the process).”
Look at the photos! Classic maritime beauty! She is just to
good to be lost forever.

Subject: Another great issue
David: The Summer Bone Yard Boats just arrived....Another
great issue.
Distressed to read the final chapter in the torpedo sterned
commuter...What a shame. Also glad to get the final chapter
in Ginger's Mystic trip. We wondered what happened to her.
We were among the more fortunate...We got out of Hartford
airport Sunday and back home that night.
Thanks again for what you are doing to save old boats.
